Staff were so attentive. Shared onsen was very serene, overlooking forest on the property. The private onsen in the room also very lovely. Highlight was the food. We had dinner and breakfast in the private room on the lower floor of the hotel. There were many thoughtful touches to the ambience of the room, including having a bluetooth speaker that you can use to play your own music during the meal. The food was incredible. Everything was delicious and beautifully presented. We had a very sweet waitress who made our dinner and breakfast really memorable

If you’re considering booking a different Ryokan while you are in Hakone, don’t. This is the one. I would fly all the way back just to be here again. We only got to spend two nights here and we wish we could have stayed forever. The moment you get to Gora station the transportation to the hotel and then the arrival immediately puts you in a state of peace and relaxation. The hotel staff are all lovely and very helpful. They truly care and know what it means to be in hospitality. The dinner and breakfast both days was so tasty and unique. The dinner experience itself is worth the entire stay. The rooms are very comfortable and well appointed and the private onsen is a real treat. I would highly recommend staying here if you find yourself looking for a true 5 star experience.

We had a wonderful stay for our honeymoon. The breakfast and dinner every day were fantastic, but the person waiting on us made our experience so much better. She was thoughtful, communicative, and very nice. The in room onsen was magnificent, the beds were the most comfortable we had stayed in all trip, and the spa treatment we received was excellent. The ultimate form of r e l a x a t i o n

Taking local trains to Hakone from Tokyo was relatively easy and well worth the trip for this incredible ryokan. The staff was unbelievable, the open air baths were delightful and peaceful, the kaiseki dinner and breakfast were both exquisite.

I hope I get to come back some day!

A true immersive experience

One of the most fabulous hotels I've ever stayed at. The service was impeccable, and the venue and staff really immersed you in Japanese culture. We were lucky enough to have dinner and breakfast in our room, which I highly recommend. We left the place feeling extraordinarily relaxed and energized and our only wishes that we would've stayed there longer.

Exceptional Onsen Hotel with Relaxing Setting

Nested in a semi-secluded hillside of Hakone, our spacious accommodation offered exceptional in-room onsen experience in a relaxing setting. The staffs were professional, courteous and friendly. Free pick-up and drop-offs at nearby attractions and Gora Station were wonderful to have since roads were pretty steep. Dinners and breakfasts were included and they were beautifully put together. Highly recommended.

Amazing visit to this ryokan! Would highly recommend. English friendly staff they were so attentive and welcoming. The dinner and breakfast were superb and we were stuffed by each meal. The in-room bath as well as the public baths are very nice. They provided pick up transportation from the local train station. I wouldn't hesitate to book this place.

The meal was beautiful and interesting experience! Even though I am not an adventurous eater, I could tell the thought and detail that went into it. My husband and I stayed here and it was very relaxing. The staff is very kind and helpful. The staff mostly speaks English too. Since the facilities were so out of the way, we found it convenient to call their shuttle bus when we needed to get back to the hotel. The kaiseki meals provided were tasty and impressive. It was very helpful for the dinner that they provided a menu of each course because I have some food allergies. We didn’t use the other spas provided because the private bath was enough for us. The bed was so comfortable! The bar seats only a few people and got filled up quickly after dinner. Overall we loved it and would stay again.

The entire staff were super friendly, especially Yamamoto. They all ensured that our stay went without a hiccup.

The space was very clean, though you can tell the minerals in the water are starting to erode some of the amenities (e.g. shower, wood on the onsen etc.)

The dining experience was amazing and the food was delectable. It really felt like fine dining in a traditional setting.

The view from our room wasn’t the best, especially the private onsen was a bit lacklustre and the place is hard to get to, but that might just come with the territory in Hakone. Absolutely perfect in every way. The food was exquisite and the staff were so kind. Highly recommended! I have never spent anywhere near this amount on a hotel before, but given everything that’s included, it felt completely worth it.

We stayed two nights in room 215 (Akebonosou) and it was perfect. The meals were completely different each day, and the private onsen with forest view was delightful. We could see a bit of the mountains from our balcony so we didn’t even miss out on a mountain view!

The shuttle took us to and from Gora station whenever we needed (it’s actually walking distance, but uphill so a bit of a hike) and from there we could get to all the Hakone sights by foot or public transit. But the ryokan is the best sight of all and we spent as much time there as we could.

This was our first and only Ryokan and so I feel my review is limited based on this singular experience but with that being said. Unlike other hotels that cost the same you’re not just paying for the location or the luxury of the room you’re paying for an entire experience, and this place delivers on that. The food is very good although I wish they offered better desserts than just a small fruit bowl. We loved how quiet and serene the entire grounds are, it was indicated that there were no rooms available and so I’m assuming the property was full though we only saw a couple of other guests, but it was always extremely quiet and peaceful and very relaxing. We booked the room we did specifically for the private onsen and it was great for two people.

Quality and presentation of the food is top notch as you will anticipated from a high end facility. Amazing luxury experience

This ryokan was absolutely amazing! The service was unparalleled. Rooms were a good mix of traditional Japanese with luxury amenities. The private onsen was sooooo nice to have. The meals provided were fantastic. While it is a bit pricey, the total experience is worth it. Once in a lifetime!

Epic stay at in-room hot spring spa ryokan

It may seem expensive, but it’s totally worth it. You will be treated like royalty in an ancient Japanese castle. The Japanese breakfasts and dinner are delicious and each dish is a work of art. Thank you Asako for taking such good care of us. You and the rest of staff are wonderful.

Let's get the price out of the way. It's not overpriced for the amenities that are included!

Both breakfast and dinner are included in the price for two. Ten courses breakfast and twelve courses Kaiseki dinner in a private dining room could easily cost at least $200 USD for two people; a private dining room in Japan costs 4000 yens at some restaurants. While the food is not michelin starred like Jiro, Tempura Kondo, Yamadaya, if Ushirgoro, the food is still good. A dinner for two at any of the named restaurants above would cost as much as a one night here. Looking back, we should have stayed here longer here in Hakone and skipped a couple of these Michelin rated restaurants.

You get your own private onsen with a beautiful mountain view along with a fridge that is stocked and replenished daily with *free* drinks. What more can you ask for?? Free shuttles! There is a complimentary shuttle service from the train station and bus stops!

Service is amazing from beginning to end! The room is spotless and the public onsen has a beautiful view. Be careful, male and female public onsen changes throughout the day. I almost walked into the female one because it was designated for male instead earlier that morning.

Now let's talk about room size. This is a HUGE room in terms of Japanese standards. We paid $300 USD a night for a room HALF this size the last time we here in Hakone!

Besides the roominess, we also loved the location! Because of its more secluded locatjon, you can enjoy

Excellent escape from Tokyo

I've had the opportunity to stay in many luxury ryokan. Madoka no Mori's dinner is exceptional, as is the quality of water both in the private onsen and in the public ones. The peace of the area is incredibly therapeutic and the proximity to Tokyo and ease of travel make it an excellent overnight excursion. Staff are incredibly gracious and responsive to requests. I loved my time here, and will most certainly try to come again on my next holiday.

Great! Definitely will come back next time!

Their service was great. There are around 20 rooms in the hotel so you seldom can see other guests. You can choose to enjoy onsen in your room or in the public area. We did onsen located in public area every morning and had never met other guests. You would be put in a private room to have your meals. The covered breakfast and dinner are even better than some from Michelin 1-2 star restaurants. The hotel picked us up at the Gora station and also drove us directly to the open-air museums/other sites nearby next day. In addition, when we returned from sightseeing, we were surprised to find out the warm water was cooked for us and we were able to drink tea immediately. Highly recommended!
