This is an elegant and family oriented place. Everyone is so professional and attentive. The vibe is kind and relaxed. The food is delicious and the amenities are incredible. This Ryokan is beautiful. I suggest you get the big room with its own Onsen. It’s totally worth it. And if you have tattoos they are totally fine with it. Excellent experience.

A fantastic stay at a traditional r

I stayed 2 nights at Gora Kansuiro as a solo traveler, in July and I absolutely loved my stay! The staff were very friendly and professional. I even got to practice my broken japanese with some of them.

The ryoukan is very traditional, which is the charm, and entire reason i loved it so much. It might not be for you if you have bad knees or back, as sitting on tatami mats an sleeping on futons could be uncomfortable for you, just something to consider. My room «Sakura» had a view of the gardens, and a private onsen bath.

I had a dip in my private onsen bath every time I got home from sightseeing, and in the evenings before going to bed, and it really rejuvenates you. Also, I was allowed in public bath with my two full tattoo sleeves, which was a refreshing change from everywhere else i have been so far! The outdoor bath is highly recommended in the late evening when it is dark outside.

Both dinner and breakfast were traditional japanese cuisine. Everything was delicious, and the Wagyu was maybe the best thing I have tasted in my entire life.

The gardens are absolutely stunning, and I highly recommend taking a stroll in the early morning.

The placement is great, near Gora Station and the ropeway.

I can not recommend this place enough, and might come back here next time i visit Hakone.

Wonderful place with fantastic staff and food.

We absolutely loved our stay here. The traditional rooms are lovely. Some bits feel a little dated but it is part of the charm. The staff are fantastic! They were all friendly, welcoming and helpful. The food was unbelievably good. A traditional kaiseki meal every night with exquisite fish that I would never get the opportunity to try elsewhere. We both loved the outdoor onsen. It was really relaxing after a day out and about. The gardens were beautiful too. The place felt like a little piece of calm and relaxation, with the addition of excellent food.

Great combination of traditional with contemporary features, albeit not perfect with either so expect rattling windows with wind, and not many electrical plugs, but just don’t expect perfection and you should be fine. Baths are not huge so i can foresee them getting crowded potentially, but our time was great. The private spa in our suite definitely was a huge plus. Food was excellent, somewhere between traditional and french.

There were four friends staying for 3 nights in Japanese style rooms and restaurant. We soon learned that sitting on rice mats for 1.5 hour dinner wasn’t suited to our old Western bones so for remaking 2 days we ate Western table and chairs and asked for additional futons for bedding. In all of this the staff were gracious and obliging at all times and went the extra mile to make us comfortable. The food was excellent and plentiful - too much food really but expertly prepared. The location was great, gardens beautiful, hot outdoor bath lovely. I have noting bad to say. However, there are 2 rooms in the inn that have toilet outside the room in hallway, one was called Take and the other I forget but they were next together. If this bothers you request to have rooms with toilet in room, not hallway, before you book . None of our 3 rooms had a shower in it, you have to use communal shower and hours are 6 to 9:30 am and then again in evening - so be aware.

The facilities were extremely outdated, and there had been no maintenance or proper dust cleaning. Just because the building is old doesn't mean it has to be dirty, but this was the first time in Japan that I encountered such a dirty place with a strong smell of mold and mildew. I read reviews saying the food was delicious, but it was far from that. The food only looks good in photos. The price was way too high, and I didn’t feel like staying there even for a single night, nor was I in the mood to enjoy the onsen. Don't be fooled by the photos.

Traditional ryokan experience at a fair price. We chose Gora Kansuiro because it was the cheapest traditional ryokan with a private onsen that we could find, and it did not disappoint.

Staff are exceptionally kind and speak English quite well. Meals were massive and very good. Felt like they intentionally prepare more food than needed so that you can sample a wider variety of traditional dishes and you will be full even if you don't eat everything (and they are very understanding if you leave anything, as some of it will likely be a bit of a shock if you're new to traditional Japanese food).

A few spiders in the bathroom and private bath area, but that should be expected for this kind of building. Futon beds are not the most comfortable but hats all part of the experience.

Private bath is smaller than I expected based on the photos, but still plenty big enough. Shared baths are available and were empty when we went, probably because most of the rooms have a private bath anyways. The outdoor shared bath is lovely.

Overall, one of the best and most memorable hotel stays of my life.

Beautiful property

We loved our stay here, it was a perfect authentic experience at a well maintained, beautiful property. Yes, it is an older property, but it is very well cleaned and was exactly what we were looking for. As we weren’t used to sleeping on the floor, the first night was a little uncomfortable, but we doubled up futons the second night and it was great. The food gave us exposure to a lot of Japanese food we didn’t get to try on the rest of our trip, although it was slightly repetitive. Everything was very well cooked except the fish which was very dry.
The grounds were AMAZING, so beautiful, including the outdoor onsens. The common bath seemed intimidating but really wasn’t and was tattoo friendly. The service was 10/10.

We had two nights in this classic old ryokan. It is one of the oldest in Gora with a long history, and the place exudes history and classic Japanese history.

The staff was superb, and the food was fantastic. The onsens were relaxing. The ryokan has a large private forest garden and depending on the route taken can be seen in 13 mins or an hour. It was amazing.

We woukd definately stay again, and what appealed to us was the classic old school nature of the place, with plenty of aged patina to the property. Despite its age it is well maintained.

The place is rundown, it’s high time for updates. It has an authentic charm in certain places. They really try hard with the food but it gets repetitive. It’s not a luxury experience, it’s more like camping. There are a lot of rules, like the showers closing at 9:30am, and we were reprimanded for being 5 minutes late to dinner.

Unique experience with exceptional staff and food

One of the best stays I've had.
From the instant we walked down the drive the team were there to welcome us in, get us checked in and seen to our room.
The room itself was nicely laid out and seemed very traditional in set up, I enjoyed the fact the place was many years old traditional house and it was very peaceful both in stay and rest.
The food both during dinner and breakfast was impecable and offered a taste of Japanese cuisine across many courses. They also have a vegan option and our server Uka was great to explain everything we were eating and had excellent service of courses.
The onsens was also a nice addition, very traditional and relaxing. Some may suggested some of the features are a bit dated, however I feel you would loose the the places character and appeal if looked to modernise.
We were lastly given good bye from the staff and given a taxi ride to gora train station. A great final gesture for an impecable stay.

This is an old ryokan located just a few hundred meters from Gora train station and you pay for authenticity and atmosphere of old Japan. Our suite was spacious and surrounded by views of woods and gardens. Staff was superb, spoke perfectly adequate English and tried to be helpful and accommodating. The multi course Kaiseki dinner as well as a typical Japanese breakfast completed the experience. We had access to a small private indoor Onsen in which we soaked more than once. Overall this was a very worthwhile stay and you can easily forgive some worn out pieces of furniture and drafty hallways (the outside temperature was barely above freezing during our stay). However, peeling wallpaper and patches of obvious, widespread black mold on bathroom walls cross the line between charming and unacceptable.

Loved our stay at the Gora Kansuiro and glad we picked this hotel for our time in Hakone. We were a family of 3.

It's a very old hotel which added to the charm of the area, we loved this and was a welcome change from modern Western hotels.

The outdoor bath was incredibly peaceful looking out across the grounds.

The food was a good experience and the hotel were very accommodating in serving vegetarian options for two of us, we were all soooo full :)

All of the staff were nice and made us feel very welcome, a special mention to Yuka who was amazing.

I want to visit Hakone again as there is more to see and much more hiking to be done; I would definately stay here again.

I was very skeptical after reading some reviews but I am so glad we stayed. Staying Annex of the Ryokan was very much like staying in a historical museum. All the beautiful architectural details against a stunning backdrop of the surrounding gardens.
Location is fantastic short walk from Gora station.
A very sweet lovely lady whom served our dinner and breakfast, was very welcoming and cheerful leaving us happy with our stay.

Our stay here was unbelievable! From the moment we were greeted by a staff member in the parking lot, until we were walked out to our waiting taxi, everything was amazing!
After we checked in we were given a tour of the ryokan and property. It is lovely!
This ryokan gave us the authentic experience we were looking for with the tatami mat rooms, futons, yukatas and the meals.
Time is taken preparing the meals and dinner and breakfast were probably the most beautiful meals we have eaten. They were also delicious! It was helpful that an English menu accompanied our dinner.
All of the staff we interacted with were friendly, courteous and hospitable.
In my opinion, this property undersells itself online and the descriptions do not adequately describe the whole experience. It was amazing!

Excellent for an Authentic Japanese experience

Our stay at Gora Kansuiro gave us the traditional Japanese hotel experience that we were looking for. Everything from the slippers,Tabi socks, Yukata (traditional robes), tatami mats, futons on the floor, and cuisine was AUTHENTIC. Being a total Westerner, I have to say I prefer a private shower option to the open single-gender baths offered, but we wanted traditional. The staff, with very limited English, was exceptionally courteous and friendly. The accommodations were very clean and neat. If you want an immersive truly Japanese experience, then I recommend a stay here.

The staff were very friendly and helpful, especially the server we had for meals who spoke English quite well. The baths are all public, and stocked with all needed amenities. Gora Kansuiro was amazing! We were treated like royalty. The rooms were very clean and comfortable. The gatden setting was very peaceful and I loved waking up to the sound of the stream running in front of my room, sitting in front of the open doors and watching the trees, the flowers and the birds. We had breakfast and dinner included and the quality of the food and service was impeccable. It was the best Japanese experience that we could have asked for. Highly recommended!

We stayed in the Sakura room which was lovely and clean with a fantastic private onsen bath, as well as access to the shared open air bath. I heard this ryokan was built in 1914. My expectations for the upkeep were met. I loved the old, Japanese country-side feel to this place. It was a couple's trip in the Kasei room. Much bigger then I assumed. Plenty of space for a couple to enjoy. The garden view with the springs flowing is absolutely breathtaking. It's only too bad that as a traditional ryokan I presume, they board up the windows at night. I would have loved to see the stars and sunrise with that garden from our room. Also, this hotel is very easy to get to, and was a very easy walk to the Open-Air Museum. And the kaiseki dinner was quite an experience, a delicious one, too.

Here's the proper review for the:
Japanese Room with Private Hot Spring Bath, Kasei, 1F

In short, extremely expensive (I paid over 1,000 dollars for 2 nights) just because of the lack of care of the room and general appearance of the hotel. However, the property and experience is like no other in the area, and the food is much better than you could get in a Michellin rated restaurant.

VIEWS ARE SPECTACULAR. You can't get a better view anywhere else in Gora. The property is huge, the Garden is probably almost as big, and prettier than Gora Park, really special.

The outdoor bath is great, however one of the indoors (the one that in the evening is set for Men only) is no good. Needs restoration... it looks too dark, dirty and unsanitary.

The room itself is tiny. Pictures available in Expedia makes the room look hube. NO, it is very small, definitely no more than 2 can stay here. Not a bad size for 2 in a ryokan, but is good for everyone to know.

I don't mind the old looks of the room. It keeps the old Japanese house style alive and I like that. HOWEVER, the room is not kept well. Spider webs, dust, smashed bugs never cleaned off the walls, dirty/darker of constant use areas on the doors due to lack of cleaning, which could be easily cleaned by the staff, areas on the walls that have been just scratched for too long. The rooms need a VERY GOOD CLEANING, PAINT, and better up keeping, specially for the price they are charging. The hotel also needs some up keeping.

A friend and I spent 2 nights at Gora Kansuiro. It was our first stay at a ryokan and we had no idea what to expect.We had an amazing 8 sleeper comprised of 3 very large rooms and 2 bathrooms both with their own natural water hot baths. The room was traditional Japanese with tatami mats and Japanese sliding doors. It has a view of their awesome gardens. At night the 2 of the rooms are set up with a futon for sleeping. The 3rd room is a living room with a stocked mini-bar and green tea. The furniture was very dated but comfortable. Overall the room was clean, spacious and comfortable. However it is in need of some maintenance. The meals were incredible - what an experience. Dinner is an 8 course meal with all sorts of Japanese specialties - some I have never eaten before but nothing that I was not prepared to try. The preparation and service were superb. The food delicious. Breakfast is very traditional Japanese so be prepared. You are able to side order coffee! The team is very helpful although English is almost zero. We got by with digital translators and hand signals.

The property is apparently over 100 years old and it shows. Everything feels rusty and moldy, and the air feels unhealthy to breath. I developed a stuffy, itchy nose during our stay which immediately cleared up after we left. When I used our private bath and looked up at the ceiling it was disgusting. The property is desperately in need of a refresh.

The staff were friendly and the food was good, but otherwise I was happy our stay was only 1 night. There are much nicer (and more cost effective) places in the area. I felt ripped off for what we paid. The other reviews are not credible.

It is a very charming old Japanese building but some upgrades are needed in the bathing area. Due to the high humidity from the private hot spring, there is mould on the walls. Nonetheless, the room and the washroom are very clean. The meals were excellent, we really enjoyed the food and the presentation. The staff are very friendly and the service was great. We enjoyed walking in the Japanese garden and were able to appreciate the exterior of this historic building. A real Ryokan experience. We had a wonderful time.

Staff was accommodating, onsen was great though they failed to tell us that it was in a different part of building and outside in the garden. The indoor baths were gross and dire need of repair. The garden was unkempt and overgrown, buildings and overall property in absolute need of refurbishment. The front office was untidy and looked disorganized with papers and folders everywhere.

The room and view we paid for was nice and quiet, it just didn’t match the level of cleanliness and experience you’d expect for the price we paid. One should not feel dirty after taking a bath!

The property has so much potential, it just hasn’t been maintained for many years: dirty hall carpet, algae on walls and bath skylights, holes in screens (thus mosquitoes). Dirty exterior. It was disappointing because it has all the makings to be an exceptional property.

My girlfriend and I had an amazing time during our 1 night stay here. The staff was extremely friendly and courteous. From the moment we entered the driveway, the staff saw us and ran out to greet us and take our luggage the rest of the way. I highly recommend opting for the in house breakfast and dinner as well. Both meals were traditional and authentic and may have been some of the best meals we had during our entire trip to Japan. The rooms were traditional style with tatami mats and gave us a different experience compared to the modern hotels we stayed at in Osaka and Tokyo. Also, even though we had a private in room hot springs bath, we also woke up at 6am to experience the outdoor hot spring bath on the property. Since it was so early, there was no one else there, and it was like a private outdoor spa to enjoy the peaceful nature views, to be able to meditate and relax. The staff again was extremely friendly and courteous and couldn't have made our stay here more enjoyable.

Good location near the Hakone train station. Authentic ryokan with a nice private hot springs bath and a charming outdoor bath. The main issue was that it was cold during our stay and thin walls provided little protection despite the heaters and warm blankets. Otherwise, it's a great introduction to traditional Japanese ryokans! Wish we stayed there longer during a warmer season.

the rooms are large even by ryokan standard. amenities are a little old; but then this is a historical establishment. the garden is really wonderful. so are their meals. we all think their matcha desserts are the best we have tasted. between the three of us, we have tasted quite a lot of desserts in different parts of the world.

Service and food was great. Hotel looks a bit aged but it was clean and acceptable. The only downside for us was that there was no separate shower facility (with a door). We had to shower in the common bath area, ie the common onsen room.

Awful experience. Bugs everywhere in our dirty room. Rips and stains all over the carpets, floors, and walls. Not just no lock but NO DO on our room so there was no way to lock it. To top it off only some of the windows opened and the in room air conditioners were ancient and barely worked at all. I would never go back to this property. Do not waste your time. Stay at another property in Gora like the LaForet.

The onsen hotel is located very close to Gora station, only 3 minutes walk. The hotel is a very old establishment but the staff are very friendly and the room is very homey. The food is nice and the dining experience enjoyable. The best part is the onsen. We stayed in a room which has no private onsen so we used the public outdoor onsen in the hotel; it looks out into the woods and the atmosphere is very calming. I guess it's because most of the rooms has private onsen so each time we used the public one we have it to our own. But the outdoor onsen is separated by gender, so you cannot actually use it together if you're a couple.

Overall a very pleasant stay.

The traditional japanese style hotel is very special, the location is very close to Gora station which is convenient. However, since the place seems a bit dated they could clean up more, but it's not dirty in any way. Staff service is great, they make bed for you at night. Will recommend to friends & family if they ever go to Hakone area.

The staff at this ryokan are incredible, staying here made me realise how crummy customer service is back home. Room was spacious and immaculately clean. The private bath was a highlight. Conveniently located 5 mins from Gora station. Don’t try use Apple maps to find this place, stick to Google Maps.

If you’re the quintessential tourist going to Hakone to experience an authentic ryokan, this is for you.

Nice traditional Onsen Ryokan

This ryokan meets my expectation of the traditional Japanese culture. The wooden house with traditional Tatami is exactly the same as what is shown in a movie. The ryokan is surrounded by green, very quiet environment and nice view.
Staffs in the ryokan are nice and friendly. They have experience serving foreigners and are easy to communicate.
Location is deep in Hakone, it takes time to reach the station. Recommend for those who plan to stay in Hakone for two/three days to try everything in Hakone. The ryokan is near train station, and convenient to go for different sightseeing.

No anyone speaks English, hard to communicate, they charge additional person more than shown on their website.

Peaceful Ryokan between the big cities

This is a true Ryokan experience. Which was what myself and my 3 friends were after. Staying in a private room with bathroom (as it's quite difficult to find a Ryokan with a private bathroom - the nature of traditional Ryokans). The room was great, 2 tatami areas and a tv you won't have any need to turn on. A small veranda with chair, there is pretty poor heating but also a heater in each room to help (the bathroom ones do turn off after a few hours though). Sleeping futons (made up for you) are actually very comfortable and as it was winter they provided 2 doonas each, I had a great sleep.
The boys I was with also enjoyed the outside onsen but said more than 4 would have been a tight fit. Traditional breakfast was something to experience but for those who aren't adventurous I wouldn't recommend it. Fish based (which is not usual for westerners for breakfast). Great location but don't follow Google's directions. Take a left through the boom gates of the railway and the next right then follow the road and someone will likely run out to grab your bags once you hear the river/waterfall. The buildings are in considerable disrepair but you don't feel the effects on the inside. Wonderful hosts. I would also recommend the Hakone free travel pass.

Nice experience for one night

Gora Kansuiro is a beautiful, old, traditional property in the cute little town of Gora in Hakone. We stayed in a traditional Japanese room with a nice view of the trees outside.

Overall it was a nice stay but it's quite hard for me to justify the price. We paid nearly $400 for one night. While the baths and the dinner are nice, it's not so comfortable sleeping on the futons on the floor. And while the traditional Japanese breakfast is beautiful and nice to experience once, it's not something I would want to eat again anytime soon (at 7:30 am!) or for multiple days in a row. Again, it's a lovely experience but just feel quite expensive for what it was. While the staff were nice, there were several things that were lost in translation like the meal times and the bill during check-out. I think next time I would probably stay in a guesthouse without the meals included for a much cheaper price, and then splurge on a nice dinner. I think you would get the same traditional experience and come out ahead.

This is an extraordinary place to stay in that it is a bit like stepping back into the old Japan. The Onsen were amazing and I had the best night’s sleep . The staff are efficient and the breakfast was impressive but it may not be for everyone and not speaking Japanese was a disadvantage.

Mycket vackert ryokan i Hakonebergen med stor skogsträdgård och utomhusbad från varm källa. Att ligga i utomhusbadet var definitivt höjdpunkten. Obs att källvattnet är väldigt varmt på gränsen till skållhett och kräver tillvänjning att bada i. Vi var där en mild vinterdag med ca tio plusgrader och hade troligen uppskattat det mer i minusgrader. Jag skulle inte rekommendera att bada här på sommaren.
Vi bodde i rummet Kodachi i huvudbyggnaden, som var fint och hade underbar trädgårdsutsikt. Rummet hade egen toalett placerad ute på den ouppvärmda verandan. Själva rummet var väl uppvärmt av luftkonditioneringen. Varning för att futonmadrassen är genuint hård - vi försökte placera ett täcke under oss men då blev det för varmt. Det är lyhört och vi blev lite störda av grannarna ovanpå men sov ändå gott.
Middag och frukost serveras inte på rummet men i en lugn och vacker matsal. Kaiseki-middagen var en av de godaste och definitivt den mest rikligt tilltagna vi ätit i Japan - vi blev proppmätta! Förutom flera sorters fisk fick vi en rejäl bit wagyu - den kunde gärna varit mindre. Fisken som sjöds i buljong vid bordet var särskilt god, liksom den nygjorda fluffiga omeletten till frukost.

Excursion à Hakoné

Super séjour dans ce Ryokan, un voyage dans le temps. Le repas était parfait et correspondait à nos attentes, très bon, varié. Le service était excellent, la personne (malheureusement j'ai oublié son prénom) était plus qu'au top, un excellent Anglais, très sympathique. Tout le personnel était au top, on aurait du rester une nuit de plus. Le lieu par contre nécessite un peu plus d'entretien mais c'est propre. Bref, si un voyage dans le japon d'antant vous intéresse, il faut y aller. Par contre Hakoné, bof, trop touristique, un parcours trop fléché sans voiture.
