The view from our room was stunning and location is very convenient. We loved the japanese style room. We had the Kadan Suite with balcony (or so I thought). Based on the photos on the website, this is what we had. A bit confusing because we still had to have our Kaiseki meal in the restaurant. The website indicates only Annex Senshin and Meigetsu are served in the restaurant, but we were told ours was as well. Additionally, their facilities guide needs to be updated on their website. Club AI apparently does not exist anymore.

The staff that greeted us upon arrival were friendly, but she only spoke and looked at my partner the entire time when explaining the facilities. Despite booking the room myself, I felt ignored and excluded. Even when asking a question, I was dismissed quickly. I found it odd. They also take quite some time to respond on expedia prior to arrival, but I am not sure if that is an app problem.

The food was delicious. The server we had the first night was amazing. She explained each dish without looking at the menu and her service was consistent. She was very attentive. The other servers were just OK. They didn't explain the dishes as well and sometimes had to look at the menu. The inconsistencies were visible despite the food being delicious.

Overall for the price, I would expect a higher level of service or at least a consistent one. For our next trip to Hakone, we will be trying another place.

Very lucky to have scored a reservation during our holiday stay in Japan. The hotel will organize ride from Gora Station to hotel. Though a short ride it is much appreciated with children and luggage. The private in room open air onsen is such a treat for families. Beautiful amenties - pool, gym and male/female onsens that swap gender in the middle of the night so if you stay longer than one night you can experience a different outdoor onsen view. The adults had a great in room massage. Kaseiki dinner and Japanese style breakfast was one of our best meals we had in Japan. Highly recommend and hope to return.

Our overall experience at Gora Kadan was wonderful and came very close to a perfect 5/5. The cleanliness of the facilities, thoughtfully curated amenities, stunning views, and the warmth and professionalism of the staff reflected a high level of care and intention. It was clear that great thought had gone into nearly every part of the experience. The only reason this fell short of a perfect score was the attention to detail during meal service. While the food itself was outstanding and among the best we had on our trip, both dinner and breakfast lacked sufficient explanation, with breakfast being noticeably worse. We had mentioned that this was our first time experiencing a traditional Japanese meal like this, so we had no prior knowledge going in.
Despite this, little time was spent explaining what the dishes were, their significance, or how they were traditionally eaten. Many breakfast items were unfamiliar, leaving us guessing or searching online for clarity. This was disappointing given the care evident elsewhere at Gora Kadan. Learning later that our friends received detailed explanations from their servers made our experience feel subpar by comparison. Had it not been for the stark contrast in service we received compared to our friends, this wouldve been a flawless once in a life time experience. With more consistency with meal service, this exceptional place would easily reach perfection - unfortunately not the case for us.

Gora Kadan was the highlight of my trip to Japan. It is beautifully kept and the service, impeccable. None of the photos do this ryokan justice. The private bath was nothing short of breathtaking as there is stunning view of the mountains. I enjoyed the open air and the indoor baths in both areas- the male and female areas are swapped every day for cleaning and it is worth seeing both as they have different garden views.
On top of this, the kaiseki meal was delish as was the breakfast the next morning. It was a bit pricey to stay here, but I would do it all again if I could, it was worth every cent.

Gora Kadan is a unique experience, from the moment we were greeted at reception to the moment of our departure. Our room was beautiful and peaceful. The hotel went out of their way to accommodate our annoying dietary restrictions (one pescatarian and one who doesn’t eat shellfish) - the food was fantastic. We had a shiatsu massage which was amazing. Breakfast was delicious. We were sorry to leave. Hope we’ll be back

We stayed at Gora Kadan and were deeply moved by the extraordinary kindness and support we received from the staff during a sudden medical emergency. Not only was the team quick to respond and incredibly caring, but one of the staff members even accompanied us in the ambulance and stayed by our side at the hospital to help us communicate with the doctors and medical staff.
At the same time, the manager personally drove our children to the hospital so we could all be together as a family during this stressful moment. This thoughtful gesture went far beyond anything we could have expected and speaks volumes about the level of dedication and genuine kindness that defines Gora Kadan.
We will never forget the care and support we received. Our heartfelt thanks to Pola, the manager, and the entire team for being by our side when we needed it most.

We had 2 rooms for us - enjoyed the night in Gora Kadan Onsen (Spa) on the way from Kyoto to Tokyo.
We had full board = dinner + breakfast and, while not at all low cost, it was one of the most memorable stays one can have with great food and very traditional Japan onsen atmosphere

The hotel is tired. There was no early check in and really nothing much to do at the hotel while we waited for our room. The rooms are nice in size and very clean and service was amazing. Food was ok and there was just a smell like wet cat food that we couldn’t shake. It was our last stop in a 14 day journey and we were hoping for more with the price tag is all.

There’s no doubt this is an excellent hotel. But the question is whether it’s excellent enough to justify its price. Not quite was our conclusion.

Service was absolutely sensational and the overall feel of the hotel is absolutely wonderful as an authentic Ryokan experience. But there is just a bit of wear and tear in the rooms and the onsen area isn’t all that impressive for a hotel of this caliber. Little things like a broken espresso machine (meaning none available in the hotel)

We were gifted a night at Gora Kadan for our honeymoon, and it was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. From the breathtaking views and serene traditional gardens to the soothing onsen and stone baths, every detail felt magical. Delicious food and the hospitality was unforgettable—the staff came out to wave goodbye as we drove away, and I actually shed a tear leaving such a special place. While the property could use a light refresh, its timeless charm and deep sense of tradition made it one of the most memorable experiences of my life. If I ever return to Japan, I will absolutely make it a point to stay here again.

Would not recommend this stay!

Let me start by saying that the service and staff were impeccable, and the food was traditional and delicious. But the other parts of our stay did not feel luxurious or comfortable. We stayed in a standard Japanese room A with tatami beds. The room had a funky musty odor and overheated at night. We finally had to cool it down by opening the door, but only to hear trains go by. The room had an air purifier in it which should’ve been a signal of the sewage like smell which may have been emanating from the drain pipe outside or the bathroom. Eventually, I used earplugs and sprayed perfume around me to be able to sleep. The pillows are bulky and hard which may be traditional and unfortunately I didn’t think to ask if they had a different type of pillow till late at night. The room does not have much of an outdoor space, and no view of Japanese gardens as I had imagined might be. Other room types may have nicer backyard and outdoor tub, but definitely not this one. In fact, the entire property does not have a garden to walk around or much of an outdoor space to lounge in. Private onsen has to be booked in advance as well as the dated looking swimming pool. Our meals were in banquet hall looking space that also lacked charm (maybe they put us there because we had kids with us). Overall, our stay did not meet expectations at the price point we paid and unfortunately I will not be recommending this stay.

While the hotel was probably beautiful at some point, it is in dire need of updating. It looks like it wasn’t renovated since the 50s. The odor in the room was unbearable, we couldn’t sleep as it was so intense... There were train tracks right next to our room, with A LOT of traffic - which also didn’t help with the sleeping.
The communication of the front desk was poor, to say the least. I emailed them 3 times to discuss our late arrival, and therefore that we wouldn’t have dinner there - I never heard back, and they charged me for a dinner I didn’t 2. I also told them that we would be two guests instead of 3, but they claimed that they had to hear from Hotels.com to refund me the difference, which they never did. Bottom line: no good!

An incredible and extremely relaxing Ryokan

The staff, grounds, and food were all superb.

We booked the Open Air Big Stone Bath room type so we had a private hot springs bath in our onsen. It was amazing to get in whenever we wanted, but it may be unnecessary depending on your budget since their public (hotel guests only) open air baths are so spectacular. Also, if you don’t book a room with a private bath, you can reserve a time slot for a private one on the hotel grounds. The time slots will give you access to a private bath, steam spa and bathroom for 40 minutes. We did this for the experience and it was a beautiful and relaxing private bath with forest vegetation to look at.

There is a downside to the Gora Kadan but it is still 5 stars for me. I mention it next because I feel it is worth noting. When I first arrived I heard some traffic noise from vehicles and the mountain railway from our room. I was initially discouraged by this but the experience at the hotel that followed muted my disappointment. If I knew about this beforehand, I may not have booked but that would have been a mistake and an amazing experience missed. You may be able avoid the noise if you book one of their higher end rooms. I’m not sure. Absolutely make sure you book a room with in room meals though. I believe at least one of the annex rooms does not have in room meals.

At this price point, I often do not feel like we got our moneys worth from our accommodation but with the Gora Kadan we absolutely did.

We arrived in Gora from Tokyo mid morning & spent the time until 3pm check in exploring the area,
We had a wonderful stay, looked after extremely well by Shuto who also served our evening meal in our room in true Rokyan style
Dinner was outstanding, our dietary requirements were so well taken care of, each dish was exquisite
Breakfast was also delicious & served in our room by Shuto
Our room was spacious, & had an outdoor private onsen, so relaxing to sit in the hot spring water in the peace & private surroundings
As other comments there are some improvements or maintenance required in some areas which are looking a little jaded, maybe there is already plans for this
We had the best nights sleep at Gora Kadan so far on our trip & a truly great experience

A truly memorable experience.

Our room assistant (Nene) and the ryokan's staff were very helpful and polite. Something that warmed our heart was that they noticed we were not back at the ryokan at around 6pm (most of the tourist attractions in Hakone close at 5pm ). The staff went the extra mile by giving us a call to check if we required any assistance or transport.

Facilities are beautiful (rooms, pool, grounds), service is over the top (they will drive you to all the local places and pick you up from the train), in room dining was amazing, and private in-room hot spring baths was wonderful. The area has so much to offer - one night didn't feel like enough. A peaceful escape from Tokyo.

Wow! Wow! Wow!

What a fantastic hotel. Our visit was a wonderful break from the real world. We were pampered like no other hotel I have ever been to. Our room attendant Ayaka was amazing, I can’t even put into words how attentive she was, anticipating our every want and need. This was in the top 3 hotel stays ever for me in decades af traveling all over the world.

We are a family of 4 adults and had a comfortable stay in a room with private onsen. Our stay at Gora Kadan was a truly memorable experience. The service by our host and other hotel staff, the attention to detail and dinner and breakfast options were beyond our expectations.
