Very classic old school ryokan. Sure it's a little warn out but that's part of the charm. Think Hotel Grand Budapest. in Japan. Food is very classic kaiseki coursed menu, and great. the Onsen (we spent time in all 3-4 of them) were great. The views lovely. One thing to be aware of is that they charge for any child over 4 years old for the full price of an adult person which is contrary to what most tourists in Japan might be familiar with (such as kids under 6 don't pay for trains etc). They also claim to be kids friendly which I wouldn't agree with. They didn't have a crib and were very insensitive to my 1yr old daughters sleep/nap schedule bursting into our room without notice while they were sleeping to get pillows for the other room.

I do not recommend this ryokan as a luxury property. It does not meet the standard of Japanese hospitality (omotenashi: thoughtful, anticipatory care for guests).

Although I expected a traditional ryokan to be cooler, our room was abnormally cold even with the heater at 31°C/88°F, an issue other guests also reported in the lobby. We had to sleep in multiple layers, and only a gas heater with a strong oil smell was initially offered before a small electric heater was found, which barely helped.

More concerning was the service. The ryokan is on a steep hill and offers a car service. When I asked if they could pick up my pregnant wife at the bottom of the hill, the front desk attendant (the owner) avoided eye contact and refused as this service was “only for check in and check out”, despite the driver sitting idle in the lobby. This occurred immediately after our heating complaint and felt retaliatory. My (emphasis: pregnant) wife waited in 0°C/32°F weather until another hostess intervened and apologized for the entire situation.

Other hostesses beside the owner were polite and apologetic of our stay.

It was incredible. We were greeted warmly by staff, some of whom spoke fluent English, and everything was spotless. The baths were super clean and beautiful. It was such a treat to be able to reserve them for private bath time. The public ones were awesome too. It was fun exploring the different rooms throughout the ryokan. They put a lot of care into the meals and personally bring every course to your room. I think this one is perfect fore couples because of the private baths . It was the perfect relaxing time. Thank you!

A lovely stay, the staff was all so wonderful, the place was extremely peaceful and the baths were incredible. We enjoyed the massage chair room too, and all the amenities at the Ryokan. Our only downside was the food, it was beautifully prepared and had a wide spread, it just was quite different for our pallete. In hindsight, we may have preferred the beef option. Very unique to try though! The room was clean and beautiful, and we appreciated the smooth check-in process. I would recommend to anyone wanting a unique, relaxing, and beautiful stay in Hakone!

Was a wonderful authentic experience the staff were very lovely and we really enjoyed trying out all the different onsens. We particularly enjoyed the ones that were outside. We really felt immersed in nature. The relaxation room was also excellent and we really enjoyed the massage chairs. Trying the different traditional Japanese foods was a cool experience not all of them were our preferred taste, but was interesting to try. The staff were really excellent and kind.

Musashino Bekkan is a truly amazing place! As soon as you walk in the front door, you know you’re going to have an authentic, Japanese experience. The lobby and rooms were very clean and comfortable. The staff was very friendly and their shuttle was very convenient. If you are at the train station, they offer to pick you up whenever you are ready to return to your room. Our dinner and service was amazing. The food presentation was spectacular! The areas around the property allows for scenic, relaxing walks. The baths were also very clean and comfortable. I would strongly recommend Musashino Bekkan if you are staying in Hakone.

We really enjoyed the forest private bath, and if we’d stayed longer we would have also tried the mountain view bath. We found that the meals offered plenty of food - bordering on too much for us. We would have liked the option to pick what we wanted to eat from the days menu rather than take every dish.

Really cool stay if you’re looking for a traditional Japanese Ryokan/Onsen vibe. The building is older and does have a moldy smell (which isn’t suprising considering the moisture from the Onsen’s) The Onsen’s were tattoo friendly as I have a full sleeve and they didn’t care. Don’t have to pay extra for private onsen if you don’t have one in your room. My wife and I slept on the Tatami mats and I will say I’m glad it was only 1 night, cool to experience but definitely woke up stiff and sore. The food experience was extremely unique and definitely not for everyone. Traditional Japanese cuisine and ingredients. Overall was a fun experience and the staff were excellent!

I have zero frame of reference for this review as this was my first time staying at a ryokan. We went in the middle of summer and most of the facility, save the rooms themselves, isn’t air conditioned. We weren’t expecting ac in a traditional Japanese inn, so that was fine. It was just a bit stuffy during check in.

The baths were clean and well kept. Definitely listen for the train before walking from the changing room to the bath or you might give some random peeps some random peeps. I immediately fell in love with onsens and bathed 4 times in 2 days!

Dinner and breakfast were served in the room and while I enjoyed dinner, my wife and kids did not. Again, it was traditional Japanese food and I have no frame of reference as an ignorant westerner; so all I can say is that the sashimi was great, the abalone was very unique (not
as scary to eat as it looked) and the bulk of both meals featured dishes of gel-like texture (which my wife doesn’t find palatable)
When looking a reviews online, it seemed like guests were given a choice between two main courses, but during our stay, we only had one option. You can ask for the kids meal if texture is a big deal for you.

Anyway it was a very cool experience that I’m glad we got a change to be a part of. I appreciate the staff using English where possible to talk to us.

The perfect stay for us for a night. The onsens weee beautiful, both public and private. It wasn’t too busy, so most of the public ones even ended up being private anyway. They were also all tattoo friendly. The staff was so sweet and very friendly! You could tell it was an older hotel, so some of the areas could smell a tad musty, but it was a fantastic value for the price. The rooms were large and comfortable, and the zen room was a must visit. Definitely would stay again.

I would consider myself a foodie, but I had a really hard time with most of the meals. I appreciate tradition, and I think they could still present traditional food, but they are trying so hard to create upscale finicky food food it just doesn’t land. There is a lot of fish in most of the meals and so for westerners some of the flavours were quite shocking. Again, I am a foodie travelled all over Asia and I’ve tried things out out of my comfort zone, but they have to find a balance so that people who are not used to that kind of food can at least enjoy part of the meal. I would not recommend this hotel as it is in desperate need of a lot of renovations. Furniture has stains. You can see mould on the walls from the moisture, and there is a smell of dampness throughout the hotel. The Hot Springs was probably the nicest experience at the hotel.

Spent one fabulous night enjoying the private outdoor onsen and exquisite in room dining experience. This Ryokan has pickup and drop off at the train station and you will need it. The location is somewhat remote and very hilly so plan to stay on site. Perfect for couples, the Zen relaxation room is lovely also.

Wow. This was amazing. I don’t know where to even begin. The ryokan was absolutely beautiful. Yes, like some other reviews said, it was a bit dated but honestly I’m totally ok with that as it keeps the tradition alive. There were tatami floors throughout the ryokan. You are provided a yukata to go to the various onsens. It’s a smaller ryokan with perhaps around 21 rooms or so and that really keeps things intimate. The staff were so friendly and kind. Even if their English was limited, they were super helpful and used Google Translate to make communication easier. There were so many private onsens you could try that were intimate and beautiful. My partner and I loved it. We also spent way too long in the message room, there some really high end massage chairs that made it difficult to leave. The food was also next level, especially in presentation. They change your tea for the day and at night for dinner. We loved it.

Incredible hospitality and ryokan experience. Very traditional and a wonderful way to experience and appreciate Japan and Japanese culture (11th time here and have done ryokan before). Extensive kaiseki and some dishes you would never find on a restaurant menu. Place is extremely clean albeit showing a bit wear - and - tear with facilities. Do book private onsen outside. 10/10

A true traditional ryokan experience. The feel and service of all the amentities was superb. We were worried about the food as it was very unique. However all of it exceeded expectations. All the food was worth trying and had such an earthy feel to it. The service of the staff members were impeccable. Very kind and helpful.

The place is little far to get to. So recommend calling ahead for shuttle service from the ryokan.

A rustic ryokan. Probably had seen better days and is due for a renovation. The front of the ryokan is beautiful and so is the lobby.

Here are the pros:
-beautiful front exterior and lobby
-quite location
-great zen (massage room) on the second floor

CONS:
-inconvenient location. The hotel was supposed to pick us up from the bus or train station. We emailed them and had the Family Mart clerk called them but they didn’t answered. After waiting for 40 minutes, we asked the Family Mart clerk to call us a taxi. Thank goodness for him or we wouldn’t know what to do because it was getting very cold!

-we were given a different room than what was booked. The room we booked was over 500 sq feet with a tatami table, which am a sleep at least 4 people. The room we were assigned was more of an entry level room fit for only two guests.

-English was very limited at the ryokan. We probably would appreciate the food more had our waitress explain what they are. The menu was as very vague and didn’t include al the dishes & condiments.

-while the outdoor onsens are great, they don’t have showers for guests to wash up before entering the onsens.

-our room faucet has only cold water. It was difficult to wash the face and hands in feeezing cold water.

-the room shower was outdoor. It is okay in the Summer but definitely not appropriate in he Winter. Also,a fthe wooden floor

-a portion of the wooden panel on the onsen in our room is missing. It should have been replaced.

This was a very unique stay if you are looking for a very traditional experience. Food was multi-course and high level. Rooms were huge and peaceful. The place could convert their photography room to a kids playroom / nursing room as massage chair area is off limits to younger guests. Private and public onsen were on of the best. The hotel could use a bit updating for their in room amenities and bathroom. Drinks and outside food is not permitted. Meals are 2 hour experiences and you will be very full.

Pictures are deceiving. The property is old and run down with visibly worn and moldy surfaces. Service was inconsistent and cold. Basically paying for the kaiseki meals, which were voluminous and tasty. Would not recommend this hotel if there are other options available.

Staff is very responsive and attentive. Having an in room onsen is great so that we can take a dip in it any time we like. Although the property is a little out of the way, they can always take you to near by bus or train station upon request.
Dinner and breakfast are served inside the room. You sit on the floor and the table is about 12-14\" high. Sitting cross leg may be uncomfortable to those who are not used to it. Getting up from that sitting position may be difficult for some.

This place is very quaint and tucked into the side of a hill inside of the forest. Very traditional Japanese style with super attentive staff and lots of great amenities. Has multiple baths, sake/tea room and bar. Easy to get around from the hotel as it’s close to everything. There are beautiful hikes and waterfalls with in 20 minutes walking or a quick cab ride. The hotel provides a 12 course omakaze japanese style dinner and breakfast. It’s truly and exceptional place where you can relax and find a traditional Japanese experience.

This was a beautiful mountain ryokan with several onsen baths, public and private, including a private wooden tub in the room itself. We were given yukata and tabi socks to wear around the hotel, and treated to a kaiseki dinner and Japanese breakfast with local, traditional ingredients. We loved the shady forest landscape and all of the care put into maintaining this special place.

The facilities are a little bit older, but we expected this when booking, and were delighted by the accommodations! If you are looking for somewhere bright and modern, this is not it. This is a cozy, forested, mossy location.

Stayed 2 days in this 20 rooms traditional Japanese style hotel, very zen n quiet, better for couples. In room private osen n public osens were good . No onsite restaurant, breakfast n dinner served in room. Food was excellent, we usually couldn't finish all. The Japanese lady serving our room was attentive, informative, joyful n helpful in every way. Her English was good enough to communicate with us. Should have asked her name to publicly praised her.

The hotel had frequent shuttle bus taking us to nearest train/bus station, 5 minutes away, so in a way was easy to get around.
That said ,for return , we had to call them to pick us up at same station . This was not easy for us with travel data cards that had no local phone numbers. So they said we could email them for pick up n I had no idea how long that would take as we were lucky enough to always got back by taxi. Btw taxi was not easy to find around that area.
Other than that, though the property was very clean, it was old n probably the mountain moisture dampen the wood or sth, when we first enter our room there was a smell . After we turned on AC for a while , the odors was no more . Next day, with opened window overlooking the valley of trees, the very refreshing air was sth we didn't have living in city.

The property had many very interesting museums around, about 15 to 30 minutes ride. We also went to areas around the train stations for coffee or simple lunch so we were never bored. Would recommend this hotel.

I rented the room with the private washroom and also a private onsen. However the private onsen looked a bit dirty/old so I did not use it at all. Instead they have three private baths available outside your room to use. I would not suggest getting the private onsen in the room.

The place is quite far from other transportation but they do offer service to bring you to the closest station. The kaiseki here was amazing and made with love.

I would give this place 10 stars if I could. We had a disastrous experience with another Hakone hotel (see my other review). As a result, we booked this hotel only the night before to get a true Hakone Ryokan experience. we reached this hotel around 11:30 am with our 5-month-old drenched in rain. The owner immediately got out, greeted us, offered tea, and gave us a chance to dry out. She also had the hotel shuttle drop us to Hakone Open Air Museum while she prepared our room. She allowed us to check in early. The hotel is located in a very quiet spot and is very traditionally decorated. The whole hotel floor, including the elevators, was covered in tatami mats. We got a Japanese-style suite with an open private bath that received continuous water from the hot spring. The room had every amenity that you might have needed. The kaiseki dinner and the breakfast were some of the best meals we had in our lives. The property also had a public onsen and three private onsen. The CEO helped us book a private onsen session, which was included in the price. The souvenir shop had food and crafts from local artists. We bought a plum liquor that tasted amazing. The next morning, the CEO helped us to plan our itinerary for the day, helped us to buy the Hakone pass, and dropped us at the bus stop. Easily one of our best hotel experiences and the highlight of our Japan trip.

We loved our stay! The amazing food (10 courses each meal), wonderful onsens, and outstanding service were all wonderful. We highly recommend Musaahino Bekkan and would definitely come again.

One note for other guests - the hotel will pick you up at one of the nearby train stations on the Hakone-Tozan line (Miyanoshita or Kowakidani). Just call their Japanese number and they will happily pick you up - they have a few staff that speak English.

I really enjoyed my stay here. It is a beautiful well kept onsen ryokan with amazing spacious rooms and facilities. The food was incredible. The staff was also incredible - I had a very tight schedule on my last day to get back to Tokyo and the staff helped me make a morning timeline and they really adhered to it on my behalf which was the most impressive part. My breakfast came a little early and they had the hotel car to take me to the train station all perfectly on time. I think there are some old reviews of this hotel on this website that are outdated. For example I saw reviews saying the staff can't speak English well which is now completely false, both the staff at the front desk and who brought meals to our room spoke very good English . I highly recommend this place and would stay here again.

Stayed here with two school-age children. We chose to stay in a traditional room with kaiseki dining. Both kids are very good eaters but even for the adults some of the food was very new. However, everything was carefully prepared and presented beautifully. The staff were very friendly, and several staff members were fluent in English. Still, I would recommend brushing up on your Japanese or using Google Translate for clear communication. Tub times were easy to reserve, but free time tubs often required waiting 15 min to 1 hour. We made the mistake of checking back every 10-15 minutes to see if one particular tub was free. After waiting an hour another guest arrived and took the tub even though they had only been waiting 2 minutes. So, you must stay right there! The location of the hotel is not walkable as the roads are steep with limited space for pedestrians. However, there is a minivan that can drop you off and pick you up from the bus station or nearby train station with ease. So, it’s no problem. Overall, the property was beautiful, clean, and very relaxing, and the staff were all very kind and helpful. Would definitely recommend if you would like an authentic Japanese ryokan and onsen experience.

My husband and I would come back here in a heartbeat. We were blown away with the breaktfast and dinner each day. We were so stuffed and impressed by the presentation. We booked the private baths without any issues and we were lucky that each time it was available for us. The staff was so nice and welcoming. They picked us up from the train station and drove us to the closest bus station on our free day in Hakone, we thought that was very helpful because walking to the station would be impossible.

Loved our stay here !! It was quite a trek to get there so definitely not the easiest if your plan is to come and go to explore Hakone. We didnt even end up leaving the facility because it was raining so much but just had a relaxing spa day instead. The private onsens (both in the room and the ones you reserve in 30mins alotments) were amazing. But the game changer was dinner - it was served a few courses at a time to our room directly and one of the best meals we've had in Japan. Everyone who worked there were so kind and treated us like family. Would stay here again!

The ryokan website had a good English page with directions and info for the hotel. When we got to the designated train stop in the Hakone area around noon, it was obviously too early to check in, but the hotel sent a shuttle to pick up all our baggage so we could go explore without our suitcases. In the evening when we finally got to the hotel, we were greeted instantly at the entrance, and they had an English speaking staff guide us through the check in process and showed us around.
We were given a corner room on the 5th floor with beautiful mountain views and had our own onsen bath. We booked a traditional Japanese room where we had to sit on the floor and they make the tatami beds for us at night. So if that’s not your thing I believe they have more western style rooms as well. Amenities inside the rooms were plenty, the only thing is the lack of plugs. They only had an extension cord with about 4 outlets. This is understandable as it’s a traditional older property.
They served our dinner inside our room which was beyond delicious. After dinner we went to an outdoor onsen bath that they had blocked out a time for us overlooking the forest and the train.
Overall our sleep was decent except for an annoying mosquito that hovered around us but we couldn’t catch as our room was so big!
The next morning we had another extravagant breakfast served to us in our room and then chilled in the zen room with massage chairs until it’s time to checkout. Beautiful experience! 10/10

This hotel is an experience. It's an isolated location on a mountain side, but the hotel decor is almost a museum and worthy of being a destination in itself. On top of that, the exterior private baths are absolutely amazing, we booked them multiple times per day. Every meal was exceptional. Thank you for the beautiful memories!

They picked us up from the train station and upon arrival at the hotel, a staff member discussed the amenities, use of the onsen and will answer any questions. The ryokan has a small outdoor onsen. This is a great place for stay in Hakone, traditional Japanese onsen house, we ordered the room and board for two nights, and it's a great experience. Both the public and private onsens are great and we have tried both. The location is also quite convenient, could walk to the Kowakidani station, both bus and train. Their hotel service is also great, family style, from the moment you entered, there is no need to wear shoes, because the whole hotel is connected in a way that you could either by bare foot or their sandals.

Soooo happy we booked here! It is a beautiful, traditional ryokan with spacious rooms, excellent staff and service, great water pressure (I know that’s silly to note, but it’s worth mentioning), and beautiful private onsens (we didn’t try the public ones).

I was nervous calling the ryokan from the train station to pick us up, but they immediately put an English-speaking staff member on the phone and didn’t make me feel dumb for not understanding and were, in fact, super welcoming and kind. That, in fact, was the theme of our stay here.

The yukatas they provide to wear are comfortable and pretty, and the staff kindly explains traditions and how to use everything during the kaiseki meal (they were so patient to explain everything to us gaijin!)

We were exceptionally thankful for them when we found ourselves very far away at Mishima Skywalk. We got turned around and missed the last bus headed back to Hakone on the freepass and we’re waiting at a bus stop that turned out to not be a stop at all. The skywalk shut down, all employees went home, it turned dark, and the taxi services wouldn’t speak to any non-Japanese speakers. Our ryokan was able to call and get us a taxi (where no taxis were running). Expensive mistake for sure, but without them we’d still be in Hakone on the side of the road!

ALL employees were encountered were kind and helpful, even if they spoke little English (and us little Japanese). Wonderful experience here!

Such a lovely ryokan experience. Located up on a forested hill (they offer pick-up service from the train station) the views over the valley were beautiful. The Premium room was spacious and the staff so friendly and helpful. Dinner and breakfast served in-room was a culinary delight of creativity and taste. Definitely a highlight of our Japan trip. We were a family of 4 (2 adults, 2 teen-agers).

Great property, very quiet, the staff was very nice and helpful. The food was great. They were very accommodating. We had an early train back to Tokyo and they served us breakfast outside their usual service times.

Would definitely recommend.

They will not allow your party to check-in early or wait on the property prior to the check in time. If you arrive to Hakone early, they will pick-up your luggage from Miyanoshita station on the Hakone Tozan line.

They will provide drop off and pick up services from the Kiwokidani station once you have checked in. For planning purposes, it is about a one hour trip back to Odawara from the Kiwokidani station.

Communication can be difficult at night, this is where Google translate was very helpful, so if you had questions or concerns about your booking, it is better to have it squared away in the morning.

A peaceful and refined Ryokan.

A wonderful and peaceful Ryokan in the mountains of Hakone. We enjoyed relaxing in the onsens, and taking a slow pace trip after a few days in Tokyo. The onsens can be booked for 30 mins at a time, but there is also one that you can take to yourself when it is free. Our room was stunning, with a kotatsu table and tatami mats throughout. The food was delicious, but we did find it a bit difficult to eat so much, and some of the foods weren't what we were used to.

We were so well treated when we were at Musashino Bekkan - when we arrived and were walking up the hill, one of the staff ran down with an umbrella to meet us and help us arrive. The hill up to the hotel is a little steep, and they helpfully gave us lifts to the local bus and train stations as we needed.
I loved the decor in the hotel as well, we found ourselves preferring to take the stairs to the baths so we could look at the lovely corridors as we went!

I am overall pleased with this hotel but there are some things to note:

-It is a FULL ON traditional Japanese experience in the sense the rooms truly are Ryokkan style and staff are all dressed in kimonos and the whole layout of the hotel is beautifully designed in old Japanese tradition.
- The food is NOT a buffet, it is a set menu of VERY traditional Japenese cuisine, lots of pickled vegetables, lots of fish and lots of food a westerner who is not very adventurour may find hard to swallow. However if you are adventurous it truly is a beautiful experience to try all the dishes and if you enjoy the food you will not leave hungry as there are many dishes they serve for both Breakfast and Dinner in the half board they offer.
- There is NO restaurant in the hotel so lunch must be eaten off the property. - They do not allow food from outside into the hotel so do not bring your own meals back. They also do not like you to bring your own alcohol to the hotel and if they discover you have then they will charge you for it.
- If you have children, even if you book that you are with kids they dont register the children in the booking and they will charge you an extra 15 USD a night for the child to have their own futon when you check out.
- the hot springs are all beautiful but the fascilities need updating. Paint pealing off the wall in places and wood rotting on the sideboards and some flooring.
- overall a beautiful experience!
