We enjoyed our stay in this serene modern rokyan with sandal wood scent in the premises. Love the outdoor private onsen.
Upon request, they replace beef with other options. Every kaiseki meal was different and delicious in your own private dining room. We were served meals by a lovely lady Ms Nozomi. She made our stay a pleasant and memorable one. Room is reasonably spacious and clean. Hotel provides free pickup and transfer to certain nearby attractions/stations. This is definitely a plus point. Paid SGD$960 per nite but it is value for money.

The property is really beautiful; gorgeous views, stunning room, and the private onsen is incredible. Absolutely no feedback on the room, grounds, staff, property, etc all amazing! It’s nice that dinner and breakfast are included given that you are quite a walk uphill from Gora and other restaurants. The food is presented in a beautiful setting and the service was wonderful. That being said, the food itself left much to be desired and given the price, we expected it to taste better.

We would not recommend this hotel to visitors who do not speak Japanese. As English speakers, we had significant communication issues with the staff, which led to multiple service errors during our stay.

We booked a 180-minute treatment that was confirmed by the front desk, but it was later canceled by the hotel due to staffing issues. We then scheduled a 120-minute in-room massage as an alternative, which was also confirmed. However, the therapists left after 60 minutes. The front desk apologized and informed us we would not be charged for the massage. I appreciated this gesture of compensation for the several errors the hotel made in our bookings.

However, at checkout we were unexpectedly billed for a 60-minute massage, which contradicted what we had been told earlier and added to our overall frustration.

Incredible attention to detail and service. Our room was impeccable and has all of the amenities you would need and want. My husband and I are both vegetarians, and the chef was able to make delicious vegetarian meals for us. The dinner we had was one of the best of our time in Japan. The staff were incredibly kind and welcoming. The room and private onsen were relaxing, and we enjoyed the beautiful scenery. The staff went above and beyond by providing us a ride to the Open Air Museum and then to the train station. We had an incredible time and would very highly recommend staying here!!

From the moment we arrived at Hakone Gora Byukadan, my husband and I were blown away by the warm hospitality and exceptional service that made our stay truly unforgettable. The space is beautiful and exceeded all of our expectations.

A special thank you to Saki, who went above and beyond to make our stay even more memorable. Not only did she host our dinner and breakfast with grace and attentiveness, but she also surprised us with a wonderful handmade card celebrating both my husband's birthday and our honeymoon. Her thoughtful touch made our visit feel incredibly personal and special.

We also want to extend our thanks to the front desk team for ensuring we had everything we needed, including organizing a car for our departure and the sweet treats for our special occasion. And a heartfelt shoutout to the
wonderful driver who picked us up from the train station and dropped us off– it was these small gestures that made us feel so well taken care of throughout our stay.

The accommodations were luxurious, great mikimoto products, nice bedding-offering both comfort and tranquility. The food was absolutely exquisite – each meal was a work of art and a true reflection of the rich culinary traditions of the area. Every detail was meticulously attended to, making us feel pampered and valued every moment of our stay.

In one word…stunning. An experience not to be missed. I don’t know where to begin with my praise-the staff, the facilities or the food? All impeccable. The staff made us feel like their most special and honored guest anticipating every need. The facilities are amazing. Room was beautiful as was the view of the mountains. Finally the food. Wow. The most delicious, delicately prepared food. A true experience. I bravely ate sashimi for the first time and enjoyed the pen shell! All dishes were explained in great detail and lovingly prepared. This property was a lucky find for us and I recommend to anyone looking for a beautiful ryokan experience

I’ve always wanted to visit a ryokan when in Japan and knew that for my first trip, it was a must have. Did a lot of research on the different ryokans in the Hakone area but settled on Byakudan as it included a kaiseki dinner breakfast with our stay as well as had a private onsen for every room since my partner has tattoos.

I was super concerned about how to access the property, but coming from the Tokyo Ginza region, it wasn’t actually that bad. It was extremely foggy the day we arrived but I could not find fault with how beautiful the ryokan is (also got a beautiful, sunny view the next morning). Absolutely stunning in person and everything smells so pleasantly of their namesake, sandalwood. The staff is so attentive in everything from giving a full room tour to letting you choose what times you’d like to dine at. Dressing up in the provided yukata was so fun and they had so many complimentary snacks, drinks, and amenities for us. We had a western style Tsuyu room on the first floor so the private onsen area was pretty, serene, and blocked from others with a tall fence.

The meals were so good. It was some of the prettiest and tastiest food I’ve ever eaten, both dinner and breakfast. Even the snacks were amazing (you can bring some home)! They take into account allergies and food preferences. Overall, I can’t believe the experience I received here. It was healing. Definitely the highlight of my trip. This memory will be so special and I already can’t wait to be back.

Hakone Gora Byakudan was easily the highlight of our Japanese anniversary adventure. From the moment you step inside this ryokan you are whisked away to a sanctuary of relaxation and calmness. Every detail is considered, even the check-in experience where you are invited to enjoy fresh matcha and Japanese sweets while the details of your stay are reviewed with you. I was hoping for a room with mountain views but everything was booked up so we originally had booked with another onsen. Finally a cancellation allowed us to book a room on a lower floor with a garden view and it was perfect and so serene.

After traveling for a week in Japan, my entire body hurt from head to toe. Five minutes in our private onsen melted every ache and pain away. I also highly recommend utilizing the spa services. The facial I received was incredibly relaxing, so much that I drifted off halfway through! The 10 course kaiseki dinner featured multiple dishes in each course and considered both of our eating restrictions. Getting to grate my own fresh wasabi was really cool. The nihonshu (sake) we ordered was served in gorgeous glass vessel and matching glasses. I was delighted to see I could bring a set back to enjoy at home. The Western style bed was definitely the most comfortable bed of our entire trip. This experience was transformative and one I will never forget. Do not hesitate to book this ryokan with onsen if you can find availability.

Everything was expected for the price I had paid. When we arrived it was pouring and the staff readily helped us with our luggages when we parked. The food was good and having a private onsen was a treat. They have public one available if needed and all amenities are included. During the evening and early they had happy hour. In the evening they had snacks during happy hour after dinner time. They also had an area with massage chairs and ice cream/tea for refreshments. When we had a question the staff tried their best to help us. The view from the main floor was amazing on a nice sunny day and overall we had a relaxing experience here. The hotel really tries to make you feel comfortable during your stay throughout the whole hotel.

It takes a while to reach the Hakone Gora Byakudan via public transportation. Free shuttle is available from Kowakudani station. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. The ryokan has rooms with beautiful view and private onsen. The public onsen was also quiet and peaceful. Dinner and breakfast was amazing and my husband was able to enjoy his gluten free meals. Service was excellent. If we ever go back to Japan, we would definitely visit this Ryokan again. This ryokan only has a handful of rooms available, so make sure you book well in advance if interested :)

The room was spacious and clean. We enjoyed the in room onsen specially in the early morning when everything was quiet. The food was traditional Japanese and the service was excellent. We thought we would get to eat in the room since there was a table in our room (Michi) but we were told both dinner and breakfast would be served at the restaurant. We had a little section just to ourselves but we would have probably enjoyed having it in room like other Ryokans we have encountered. Overall the experience was special.

Service was excellent from start. We were served tea and snacks during check-in.
Room had a lot of amenities and everything you would ever need. Non-alcoholic drinks included in the mini-bar, insence, lotions, etc. Was available.
After dinner wine, shake, whiskey is free in the lobby. Before and after breakfast champagne is free in the lobby.

We absolutely loved our stay here, it was exquisite in every way. Loved the lounge area and the stunning views, the rooms were gorgeous and spacious. We are a family of 5, I was worried about the kids and the Kaiseki meal but we had a private room and our son had a kids version of the meal. We all had Yukatas and the kids ones were very cute. My family was wowed by Gora Byakudan. This is a traditional ryokan styled with a Scandinavian twist. Our room was spacious with a private onsen. You really don't need a thing when you travel here--all amenities are provided--there was even a rack of Uniqlo down coats for chilly guests!
We had a traditional dinner and breakfast, beautifully presented. The food was perhaps a bit too traditional for our teenaged boys, but the chef was incredibly accommodating when we asked for substitutions for our non fish eating son, which was done with grace and efficiency. The staff spoke limited English but we all did our best to communicate. It wasn't a problem at all. The staff made sure we were comfortable and happy throughout our brief stay.
We especially enjoyed the open help yourself bar in the evening, seating ourselves on chairs in front of the lobby's wood burning stove. An open breakfast bar with various bubbly selections is offered as well.
Views are sweeping and gorgeous. This is a tranquil place and was all we had hoped it would be.

Before even arriving at the property, their customer service was superb. They were very easy to communicate with and advised on the best way to travel given that we were not renting a car. We wouldn’t be arriving in the morning and given that check in was not until 15:00, they picked us and our luggage up from the train station (Kowakidani) and dropped us off at the open air museum, the beginning of the sites we wanted to see that day, keeping our luggage while we were out.

Upon arrival we were amazed at the tranquility, cleanliness, and beauty of the property. We were greeted with drinks at check-in, while we marveled at the expansive view from the lounge area. The Japanese attention to detail was apparent throughout the site, from the yukata they provided us to wear during dinner and breakfast, to the many in-room details like incense, tea set, and more.

The private onsen we had faced outwards with a view of the rolling hills and was one of the most relaxing experiences I’ve ever had. The room is perfectly designed with floor to ceiling glass with a shower methodically placed as you re-enter your room from the deck/onsen.

The kaseki dinner was fantastic as well. They were sensitive to any food restrictions and would have adjusted the menu accordingly if so. The menu itself was unlike anything we had done before (our first traditional kaseki) where we were exposed to local ingredients and dishes we never had before.

Can’t recommend this ryokan enough.

Everything about our stay was amazing. We were warmly greeted by the friendly staff and really enjoyed the unique check-in experience. I had previously mentioned that I was pregnant to one of the staff members prior to our stay and they were extremely accommodating. Not only did they substitute things that I could not eat or drink for things that I could, they even went above and beyond by making the room extra comfortable and even provided me with a pregnancy pillow. I struggled with this review. This place is almost a pure 5 - perfection at all levels. But its perfection on their terms, and theself centric not client centric. You will wear the clothes they want, eat at the times they want (6 or 7, that's it) wear the sandals they want (4 different types, please do not confuse where to wear each!) and if you want to come back to your room to rest during the day you'll find out it takes them an hour to clean it and youre not allowed in.
So, its a massive OCD camp and a bit like Las Vegas- the first two days you love it, the third day you want out. That's why im giving a 4 versus a full 5. That much said is one of the greatest experiences you can have in japan, simply marvellous. Do it.
Max 2 days!!!

Relaxing Retreat Perfection

Came to Hakone for hot springs, and the Hakone Gora Byadukan was AMAZING! They picked us up to and from the train station and gave us a free shuttle ride to Yunessun. The food was amazing. The private onsen in a room with \"no view\" was actually a really beautiful view of some fall foliage. Every amenity need and request I had was honored. The hotel lobby has amazing mountain views, and it smells great. The free drink service and welcome sweet was lovely. I drank more coffee that I should because it was sooo good. If you are looking for a relaxing retreat, I highly recommend this place. This is by far my favorite hotel I've ever stayed at.

Amazing ryokan stay in the Hakone region

Was our first ryokan experience and it will never be forgotten. Our room had a stone balcony onsen with views of the hills and of the distant town below which we enjoyed 3-4 times each day. The kaiseki dinners were changed each day and were amazing. While not served in our room, we did enjoy both breakfast and dinner in a private room which we appreciated. I think the private dining came with our choice of an upgraded room as we noticed others had their meals in a more open dining area. The room was very clean and had all of the modern conveniences. The automatic
Japanese toilets took a little getting used to but now we absolutely want one for our home back in the states! If you are looking for a wonderful ryokan experience this place has it all. Staff was so accommodating as well. We were there while typhoon Jebi was hitting Japan so the weather was obviously on the stormy side. Regardless of whatever the weather may be though the setting itself will always be romantic.

Our family of 2 adults and 2 kids had a great time at Hakone Gora Byakudan! The service, room and food were all fantastic! The service was great for local area dropoff and pickup, the staff was very attentive to our needs and language was aided by Google translate quite a bit, but it worked. The room we had was a Western/Japanese style room (Waku room was the specific room we had); it was a perfect setup with 2 large western beds, and a tatami room that was setup for the kids each evening. The balcony faced up the mountain and over the driveway/parking lot, but with the blinds that were on the balcony, we hardly noticed and it was still a relaxing and beautiful view. It was raining almost the entire time we were there, so we ended up spending a little more time on property than we would have liked. The living room/lobby is impressive upon entry and is good for sipping tea and coffee. The public onsen is a little small, but there were hardly any guests in there whenever we went. There is a small room with 2 massage chairs that entertained the kids each day, and the spa had a couple rooms for a massage that was quite pricey, and wasn't the best massage for the money. The food was unique and pretty good, but after 3 nights it got a little repetitive, but then again 3 nights is probably 1 day too long for a Hakone stay. Also, the longer meal time of a the traditional Japanese meal wore on the kids. Overall, a great stay!

Beautiful ryokan in an unbelievable area

Our family of 5 adults had an amazing time at this ryokan. The food was unbelievable, the room was huge and comfortable with modern touches in traditional ryokan style and every staff was super nice! Since it was raining, we could not go sight seeing but the gorgeous view from all the windows and balconies were good enough.

I am very disappointed with the hotel. We were a group of 6 people, before I reserved the hotel I emailed them letting them know we are all VEGETARIAN... this hotel was expensive because meals were included. I have proof of multiple back and forth emails of them confirming they can easily accommodate us as vegetarians, and confirming that we CAN NOT EAT SHELLFISH. Both meals that were provided by the hotel, dinner and breakfast were fully meat and shellfish. There was absolutely nothing we could have eaten, and even worse... the woman I was emailing who confirmed our vegetarian meals was also our server, who in person we found out does not know any English!!! So we was confirming our meals without knowing what she was confirming. It was extremely frustrating, and we were starving our whole stay.

We also got there at night when the hot springs had closed. The next morning we checked out and decided to go into the hotpsrings for 1 hour right before we departed... since we traveled 3 hours to get to this place only for its hot springs! We get into the hot springs and a staff member came and was telling us to get out... saying they want to clean it now and we have to get out. We tried to ask them to push off cleaning for just 15 minutes we want to experience the hotel springs... they then threatened to charge us an additional $100 US per person if we stayed any longer (this was at 12pm... not late in the day at all).

Overall, it was horrible.

Beautiful onsen

Warm, comfortable and relaxing. Loved the sitting room with it's stunning views, fireplace, nightcaps and coffee. The room we booked had a private onsen which was hot, clean and perfect for lounging. It felt like every detail was well thought out and the staff has made every attempt to provide a wonderful stay.
