This hotel is slightly quirky but is very nice. I slept very well here and enjoy my room and the view over the valley. I didn’t eat at the restaurant for breakfast or dinner and I wanted something light, so can’t comment on the food. The view from the restaurant looked amazing.

The only thing that would make the stay better would be to provide guests with a kettle to make tea or coffee in their rooms. I will definitely stay here again.

There’s no elevator so if you have heavy bags, be prepared to carry them up stairs.

Phenomenal location at the edge of a panoramic bastide. Expensive, but very good restaurant in the hotel itself (not always open in mid October). Some good restaurants nearby, but many also not open for dinner in mid October (although open for lunch).

Unbelievable views great restaurant, if you use the restaurant book early to get a good table. The time are dated but clean and comfortable. However the Aircon was broken when we stayed which spoiled it stay somewhat

L'Esplanade is in the heart of Domme, a charming place and town with a wonderful view of the valley.

Parking is an issue. We left our car in a metered space (without paying) for about 45 minutes while we were checking in and received a ticket. The staff directed us to an unmetered spot on the street and we left it there for the rest of our two day stay. BUT we were there off season (week after Easter). If you are going to stay there during a busier time you should research the parking options and costs.

Stunning Views & Charming Stay

L'Esplanade was the perfect, quaint French countryside experience we were seeking for our 2-night trip to Domme! We rented 3 rooms for our friends at this hotel and loved the endless vistas of the Dorodgne Valley. From watching the sunset and hot air balloons, to enjoying the delicious chef-crafted dinner at the restaurant, L'Esplanade is the only place we would stay on our next trip to Domme!

It has a spectacular view from the guest rooms, but you have to ask for \"a room with a view\" and you end up paying for it. My Expedia room - was very small, tired looking and with no view. Bathroom was terrible. New room had a lovely bathroom, was much larger (though not that large) and a view out the window that was exceptional.

Come for the VIEW!

We really enjoyed our stay at L'Esplanade; people were friendly, the location is awesome, and the breakfast was excellent. We would have appreciated more lighting in the room itself, and we felt the carpets could be improved upon; then, I believe our reviews would have all been \"big smiles\". It's definitely worth a stay here, for the hotel and the surrounding town of Domme.

Huge disappointment

This place used to be great for food, I'm going back some 20yrs here, now its unbelievably over priced nonsense. The decor hasn't changed either. The rooms can't have been decorated in over 20yrs, quite shocking, I paid extra for a superior room with Dordogne view, the view was stunning but the tired and pokey attic room was not worth the money. This place needs a serious cash injection or needs to call it a day.

The view to to die for!

You really can’t say anything more then go for the view! It’s unbelievable. The hotel staff are lovely, the only thing is getting to the hotel! When you get up to the square with the church, park the car , get out and you’ll see it beside the viewing area.

One of the best views in France!

Fantastic view, beautiful village, and incredible restaurant! Hotel itself needs some upgrade but the view, village and restaurant definitely make up for it! This is our second visit in 4 months and we loved every minute of it. Domme is a beautiful hill town in France! When hot air balloons hang over the valley and the sun is setting it is a photographer's dream!

Good hotel in a lovely village

The hotel is in a wonderful location with fabulous views and we had a lovely bathroom - and air-conditioning. However, we did consider it to be over-expensive. We were going to treat ourselves to dinner but, on the basis of breakfast, which was the worst value we've ever had in France, we decided to go into the village for dinner. I always try to communicate in French but the parking arrangements were beyond the lady who happened to be on reception when we arrived and myself. And everyone we asked said different things - between no euros on various streets to 75 euros in the carpark for three days. We went with the Tourist Information Office's suggestion and were not fined. I realise it's my fault for not speaking French, but could I suggest a sheet of paper stating the carpark arrangements in English when checking in. It is probably the most important information to get right.

Fairytale view from our window

A hotel with charm and more charm in an exquisite jewel box town. The view from our window was magically beautiful and out of a dream. The room itself was again charming and charmingly French. The staff went out of their way for us and provided excellent service. We had two dinners, one in the dinning room and one outside on the patio. Both were delicious and both provided the gorgeous view of the valley and river below. We would love to return to Domme and of course L'Esplanade.

This was a great find! Exactly as the picture shows - this hotel is a destination by itself. The good news: the Dordogne is full of treasures you didn't know you were looking for! Eat breakfast and dinner here. Watch the sunset every night. Relax in your room. Take day trips, but stay here for a wonderful experience.

Esplanade has best view of the Domme valley

Switched the room assigned to me by booking through Expedia to one with a better view, since the Esplanade has the best view of the valley stretching out below Domme. Pity to miss it for lack of 10 euros a night. Food at the restaurant was expensive but excellent, if a little rich. Staff were friendly if a little rigid. Not the warmest reception but good enough for France. May return with others from my family.

Lovely room in beautiful Domme

We had a really nice stay here and would definitely recommend it. The room had a really nice and spacious bathroom with a tub, comfortable bed, and is just steps from amazing views of the valley and right in the lovely downtown of Domme. One tip, book early for dinner reservations if you'd like to eat at the hotel's restaurant.

Lovely auberge with spectacular view.

Loved the relaxed vibe in beautiful. The L'Esplanade is a charming French auberge. The staff aimed to please. Though a bit difficult to find if arriving by car, once we got there, it was simple to drive to and from other Dodorgne villages. Please note, there are no elevators.

Outstanding views off the terrace Wonderful for drinks at night, coffee in the morning and dinner during sunset.
Great base to explore the Dordogne river valley.
Staff very welcoming and helpful.
Ask for rooms overlooking the valley.
Hotel is older but atmospheric however that may not appeal to those expecting a 5 star hotel experience. I am ok with that as I enjoy that this fit the essence of a medieval town. Would return!!

Perfect hotel in Dordogne region

My wife and I were on a belated honeymoon and booked this somewhat last minute. We had wanted to stay in Beynac or La Roque Gaegac, but found Domme to be an equally charming little town high up on a hill. The hotel restaurant has the best views in town, and the food and wine selection were excellent. Our room was very simple but clean (2.5 star), and with recently renovated (4 star) bathroom. Note: there are no lifts, so don't come here if you don't like stairs (in fact, avoid the town altogether, as it's quite hilly). Also note that you have to enter the hotel through the restaurant and there is no hotel parking, though there is public parking around there.

Would stay again!

Lovely hotel. We stayed for a wedding in a nearby village wth our 8 month old daughter. The staff were excellent with us and the baby and catered for all of our needs. The room was spotless and they provided us with a baby cot. If we could have changed one thing it would have been to have a kettle in the room as this would have helped with the baby but they provided us with water as and when we needed so it wasn't a huge problem. Really lovely hotel and would definitely stay again.

Nice hotel with a world class view of the valley.\n

The hotel is located in the city of Domme which is located on a cliff over looking the Dordogne valley. Our room was on the valley side with a perfect view. It was small by American standard, but pretty much normal for European rooms. The service and check in went great and our stay was about as smooth as you can get until the last night. It seems that we offended the staff by not eating at their highly rated restaurant. We stayed 3 nights and ate breakfast there only once and no dinners. The truth is 16 Euros each for breakfast which was a plain omelet, some cold cuts, pastries, coffee and juice seemed high. Less than 100 yards away we got pastries, and coffee for less than 10 Euros. Still we ate there once for the atmosphere. As for dinner it was 35 and 70 Euros each, for a menu very heavenly weighted toward goose liver. 50 yards away we got a great salad, salmon, and creme brulee for less than 20 each. Had they not clearly gotten offended by our eating choices, I'd say this was a great stay. Still if you can get past the \"feelings\" issue this is a wonderful place to stay if scenery is important. I can't imagine a better view from a hotel.

Stayed here for two nights in March 2015. The hotel was exactly as described on the website with wonderful views across the Dordogne valley. The proprietress made us extremely welcome and we found the whole experience delightful. Restaurant was very pricey but have to say the evening meal was a gourmet delight and the service couldn't be faulted. Only complaint was that there was no shower screen or curtain on the bath in our en suite facility, making it impossible to shower without flooding the bathroom. Would certainly recommend this hotel, and Domme is an enchanting medieval village.

We were traveling with another couple in the Dordogne and stayed here for two nights. The hotel is lovely with charmingly decorated rooms and a magnificent views of the Dordogne River and valley below. The owner, Sophie, is very nice and worked hard to make our stay comfortabe. Domme, in winter, was very quiet with most places shuttered but still it was an excellent location for touring the area. As it was winter, the hotel and area were quiet. The only downside to this hotel would be that there is no elevator for those not able or willing to navigate stairs with or without luggage. It was not a problem for us. We enjoyed our stay and would recommend it highly.

On a scale of 1-10, this Hotel is a 12.

Wonderful hotel set on a cliff overlooking the Dordogne River and Valley. It's a view that you will photograph a hundred times before you leave. The hotel restaurant is terrific - great service, superb cuisine, artistically presented. Hotel is located in the medieval town of Domme, which includes shops and a few restaurants, but is not overly commercialized and crawling with tourists. Allow several days for your visit. Even then, you won't want to leave.

A well run hotel in a fabulous location

We chose this hotel as a one night stopover on our way South. Right in the centre of Domme, the hotel is well maintained in a beautiful old building with fabulous views over the Dordogne valley. As vegetarians we were also delighted to find a welcoming little Pizzeria just away from the centre of town, an essential plus.

My wife and I spent three great nights here, visiting Domme and other villages in Les Plus Beaux Villages de France\". L'Esplanade was recommended by a friend, for which we are grateful. Be sure to dine on the terrace with a good view of the Dordogne!

Amazing Views of the Dordogne

L'Esplanade is one of the nicest hotels in the Dordogne Valley, and the views are nothing short of amazing. There is a lookout point next to the hotel that attracts visitors from all over the region - although if you are a hotel guest you can enjoy their patio which is much nicer! Restaurant was also excellent - definitely higher-end but not unreasonable for eating foie gras, truffles, and French wine! Would definitely recommend and visit again.

Gem of a hotel in Dordogne

We loved our stay at the Esplanade. The view from our rooms and the dining room was absolutely incredible. The rooms were attractively decorated and comfortable. The desk staff was extremely helpful, especially with matters requiring English translation. Domme is a lovely little medieval city and a great base for seeing the prehistoric cave paintings and castles of the area. I highly recommend this hotel.

Disappointing Hotel

The hotel is in a premium location, looking over the Dordogne valley. If you get one of the rooms facing the valley on the first floor, the views will be magical. If not, you will be stuck in a hotel that has very little to recommend it. The hotel is in dire need of updating: bathrooms, paint, carpets, lighting, etc. The breakfasts should be amazing--looking out over the valley before all of the tourists have arrived--but instead they are just a mediocre assortment of pastries and orange juice. We couldn't dine at the hotel restaurant for dinner due to the high winds.

Bottom line: only book if you can get a room on the first floor over looking the valley and you can live with a dated room.

This hotel is not for everyone

If your GPS doesn’t find the location just keep heading uphill until you reach the top. It’s by the church. Parking is provided by the town around the hotel which is pay-parking, but apparently no one checks.
We found that room was very clean, comfortable and modern. The only negative in the room was that they there are 2 types of heating and the one in the bathroom gets switched off by timer. You can override this, but only if you know how. So our first morning was a bit cold, but once we figured it out with the landlord’s help, the bathroom was nice and toastie the next day.
I don’t recommend the restaurant. While the food is good it’s not as excellent as the price suggests, and the portions are small so don’t go expecting to be well fed. We didn’t have breakfast there, opting instead to patronize the local café which had Quiche and coffee at a much reduced price. I must say, though, that the views from the restaurant are stunning and may be worth the price of one meal there. On the whole I found the atmosphere a tad snobby for my taste, but others may enjoy the formality.
I would stay again.

A beautiful area and so convenient

We visited L'Esplanade Hotel for a two night stay before going on for a further week in Sarlat and were delighted with the wonderful views and the surrounding countryside. The staff were extremely friendly and courteous and the accommodation first class.

We loved L'esplanade, once we were there. The drive was a little scarey for my husband who has a fear of heights. We did not realize that the hotel was in a small city up on a cliff. This hotel was well worth the drive, however. The view from our room was spectacular. We had dinner and lunch on the terrace overlooking the Dordogne River Valley. The food was very good. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. Victor (I think that was his name) was very helpful. There are many shops close to the hotel for shopping or just walking around. I would stay at this hotel again and so would my husband!

Fairy-tale location

A wonderfully situated hotel with splendid restaurant, overlooking the most gorgeous view of the Dordogne river imaginable! The staff were very pleasant and helpful at all times, from guiding us in on our first evening when we couldn't find our way round the Domme one-way system, through to remembering our penchant for Darjeeling tea with our breakfast. Our room was a little cramped - the furniture was lovely but there was perhaps a tad too much of it - but overall we had a most enjoyable stay.

The hotel was nice enough but too expensive! we had a room on the second floor looking over the rooftops of Domme, clearly the best rooms are at the front and on the first floor. The decor is dated and no breakfast was included in the price. the evening menu was extremely expensive, we had a wonderful meal at a small restaurant in the town at a far better price. i think the hotel is living off the reputation of having one of the best views of the Dordogne River. We stayed in far better bed and breakfasts in the area at half the price!!!!

What a great place to stay.

A beautiful Hotel located in one of the prettiest medieval towns in France. This hotel exceeded our expectations. Watching the incredible sunset from our hotel terrace high on a hill over looking the beautiful countryside and river right below was a post card moment. The Village homes and shops in Domme were wonderful and the location could not be beat. We travel the world and would recommend this to everyone and will definitely be back. Hopefully this review does not help them raise their rates. Ha.
