Very old traditional Ryokan. Beautiful garden/riverside views. We did not realize that there are no private baths - that was a big surprise but we were only there one night so it wasn't that problematic. Staff were very accommodating and Google Translate made communication very easy.

This was the exact authentic Japanese style experience I wanted. Everything from the decor to the clothes. Our room overlooked the river and was incredible to sit and watch while sipping tea.

Staying at Fukuzumiro felt like stepping back in time. This traditional ryokan, rich with history and charm, offers a peaceful retreat surrounded by nature. The kaiseki meals were exquisite—carefully prepared and beautifully presented. The onsen, both private and public, was serene and rejuvenating - the temperature was perfect. Akiko-さん’s kindness and attentiveness truly elevated my stay - she treated me with the most special care and I loved learning Japanese from her during my stay. We had a truly memorable stay here. Beautiful setting and all very serene. Akiko san was our host for our visit, and she was fantastic at introducing some of the customs and etiquette associated with staying in a traditional Ryokan. I'd recommend that anyone considering this looks up the rules and etiquette for Ryokan stays first before booking. It's not for everyone. But if you're trying to immerse yourself in the culture of Japan, I think this is a must.

This stay has been the highlight of our Japan trip! The staff were so welcoming and accomodating to our needs (vegetarians). The location is absolutely stunning being surrounded by the mountains and rivers.
Our room was clean, spacious, and beautifully decorated in traditional ryokan style. The room included bedroom quarters with futon beds made at night, dining area, TV, aircon, toilet, shower, and heated private onsen. A private garden was included as well. The inclusive breakfest and dinner was super delicious and interesting to learn about the local produce.

I travel solo to Japan for 2 weeks and this hotel is probably one of the best experience I had in Japan. The room is clean with traditional Japanese ryoken style. Very comfortable with AC and fan. It has an awesome river view. The restrooms are shared but I never had a hard time using it. I actually never ran into anyone and felt that it was my own restroom. The grounds are beautiful with koi fish and meditation garden. You can reserve a private hotspring each day to yourself and that is where you will shower/bath. The best part of the experience is the staff lady who serve me breakfast and dinner. Such a nice lady who explained all the food that is being served. The food is the best food I had in Japan and it is homecooked and is a 10 course meal. If you have the chance, book this hotel.

Staying at Fukuzumiro was a total experience. We were greeted at the door, removed our shoes, and felt as if we’d gone back in time. Our room faced the river, providing a calming sound backdrop. The shared bathroom is rustic but clean. Breakfast, dinner and an afternoon snack were all served to us while relaxing in our room, and each meal was wonderful. Our room attendant, Akiko, explained bathing etiquette and made us feel at home. Each of the private baths is different— I recommend trying each of them.

Such a lovely historic ryokan experience, our first ever!! The inn is old and rustic which gives the feeling of going.back in time. The onsen mineral bath experience was worth trying, but reserve a private one if you want to enjoy with your companions instead of other travelers. Our room
Had no bathroom, so toilet is down the hall and showers in the onsen rooms.
Our corner room has lots of windows/screens that open up to the sounds of the river below. Meals are served in the room and then table is moved and futons set up for bedtime. The food was typical Japanese style and good. We opted for western breakfast. The staff were amazing and attentive. Great experience if you want to try a traditional stay.

This is a century old building so don’t expect any modernization. I have been to other onsens that have upscale accommodation such as having a toilet in our own room. This one doesn’t have a toilet in the guest room. However, if you are up for the ryokan experience., it is good. I love their traditional dinner and breakfast which their brought to our room. Love the staff. Extremely nice, patient, and caring. Love Japanese! We walk up and down the road to a small town next to the local train station every day so we could enjoy the beautiful river and mountains. Lots cute shops and restaurants in the town if you don’t reserve any dinners or breakfast with the resort. It is not an ADA building as there is no elevator in the resort so be prepared to walk up and down the stairs. The wonderful staff carry our luggages up and down of the stairs for us. Thank you 🙏 for your services!

A highlight of our trip.

The hotel from the initial walk in was beautiful and felt as though we were stepping back in time. Our room with papered walls and tatami mats, overlooking the river was breathtaking and the food carefully layed out by our nakai-san was exquisite and our nakai-san was wonderful, meticulous and patient with the many questions from our kids.

The private onsen was relaxing and a luxurious treat. Honestly, it was a highlight of our trip. The photos do not do this place justice, like most of Japan.

We had read some reviews online before staying which were slightly critical, which we found umdeserved and i can only assume those reviewers need a weekly fix of abu dhabi bling.

If you want to experience a moment of historic japan in an atmospheric, beautiful setting with amazing traditional food and attentive, friendly staff i cannot recommend this place enough.

We had a wonderful 2 night stay in Sakura 4 (January, 2024). We opted for the \"half board\" option and were spoiled with two delicious - and generous - kaiseki style breakfasts and dinners. We managed to try all of the private onsens during our stay and had no trouble booking times that worked for us.

Fukuzumiro is a special place. That said, it is not a 5 star hotel with fancy amenities. The building is historic and the shared bathrooms are quite basic. But if you're looking for a legit ryokan experience with superb food and hospitality, Fukuzumiro is the real deal.

Big shout out to Akiko for taking such great care of us!

A perfect getaway from Tokyo

We loved this ryokan! It’s very old school and feels like a step back in time. We stayed here on an overnight from Tokyo and it was an enchanting experience and total change of pace. Our room (Seseragi) was spacious and was surrounded by trees and a rushing stream so that it felt like living in nature. The meals were fantastic and the service was gracious and welcoming. Also, it’s wonderful that they offer both private onsens that must be reserved as well as public ones that you can use anytime.

Wow, what an experience. From the moment I arrived, a truly special stay. Loved how they’ve kept so many traditional elements. Thoroughly enjoyed getting a tour from the host and hearing about the history of the property. The host was so kind and helpful. Was in awe of my room - right by the river and so stunning with all the wooden textures and paper doors.. felt like I’d stepped back in time. Shared bathroom but actually had it to myself as no one else was on my floor. Dinner (served in my room) was an incredible experience. I was on cloud nine. The onsens were all wonderful (I tried three). The sound of the river was so peaceful. Gosh it was relaxing. I loved the futon bed and waking up to the sunlight coming through the doors. Staying here is highly recommended.

It is a great and historical onsen to stay in. Everything was traditional and the staff were very friendly and helpful. We dropped off our luggage early and they were in the room by the time we checked in. They provided a very tasty mochi snack initially. The dinner and breakfast were amazing, not to mention the excellent services.

Onsen were great too. You can reserve private or use the public ones. When we visited, other people used private ones more often, and we had the public ones to ourselves.

This is the place to go if you want to experience a traditional onsen and hotspring experience. But if you are looking for a more modern and accessible ryokan, this might not work for you. The place is big and depends on where your room is, you might need to walk down 1-2 floors and a hallway to get to an onsen. You don't have a private restroom and it is shared with other customers.

Excellent service. We were welcomed so warmly, it was an absolute treat. This is a very unique accommodation type for a Westerner. Some things to note: a small 10 min walk from the train station, traditionally Japanese futons on the floor, shared bathrooms not too close to the rooms.
The pros: beautiful Onsen area that can be used anytime, male and female separate in case the gender mix bathing makes you nervous. The in room breakfast and dinner were some of the most memorable meals I’ve ever had traveling, absolute feasts. Beautiful view from our sitting area in our room. Just a great place to come relax, have a tea, take some quiet time.

We stayed in another ryokan on our trip and loved it, but the price here was significantly higher and yet the quality of the food and facility was much lower. I was expecting a more polished and refined experience and simply didn’t get it. I like the concept (traditional, meals included, on-sight onsen) and don’t mind sleeping on the floor or shared bathrooms, but not at this price point.

Hotel is about 2-3 bus stops away from Hakone-Yumoto station. You can try walking from the station (I didn't do so as I was carrying my heavy luggage). When I passed by the road on the bus, I noticed the path was rather flat, it should be quite easy to walk on.

The staff are very welcoming. There will be one designated staff attending to you during your stay, mine was an old lady. Although she can't speak English, we are able to communicate using body language. She showed me the places around the hotel when I check in.

The room is cosy, with an area to sit and relax like the balcony. There is a small tv and a safe in the room. My dinner and breakfast were in the room too. The variety of dishes were huge and quite yummy, I couldn't finish them.

The toilet on the 2nd floor is shared among males and females. There are two shared bathrooms with onsen, which will switch genders during certain timing of the day. There is one private bathroom, you do not have to make reservation but if you want to use, choose a non peak timing so you don't need to wait. I went to the shared bathroom on the right of the stairs, the condition was not the best, but the onsen made ip for it. I went a little before 6pm and I was the only on using it. The make up room is right outside the bathrooms.

If you are not picky about not having attached toilet and bathroom, this is the hotel for you. The hospitality of the staff and the onsen made up for the old condition. Overall a great stay!

Great location, food, and service!

Given that this is a hundred year old structure, there wasn’t too high of an expectation for technologies or in-room amenities. I was rather expecting a traditional and authentic Japanese ryokan experience.

Fukuzumiro met my expectation in various aspects, the rooms and the building were definitely traditional, the service was great, the food was amazing.

The only thing that I was not exceptionally happy with was the onsen facilities. The “private” family onsen was quite small, which made me wonder how clean the water is. Families take turns to use the facility, but the tub was so small and when it was busy, it was pretty much used back to back. The water was not “refilled” continuously, so you’re basically sharing the same small tub of water with everyone else.

The bigger, shared onsen facilities were better yet it’s rather old. Old as in it needs renovation due to water dripping from the ceiling, floor tiles stained with years old soap residues.

Overall the value is there, the location is great. I would stay again but probably not with a family group.

This is a very traditional old Japanese working onsen, and as long as your expectations and aims for your stay are for that experience, then you will not be disappointed. Historic ryokan so do not expect things to look sleek and clean BUT it has its own charm that's hard to find in other ryokans. Upon arrival, the staff helped me move my baggage into my room and they gave me a rundown of their facilities. Dinner and breakfast was spectacular.

There are two main onsens that switch between male and females during the day and night as well as a private bath and spa. I preferred the private as well as the rock onsen because it was more spacious and had more shower heads. The other onsen was split in two and only had a shower head each and a facet w/ buckets.

If you want a real, traditional Ryokan experience then fukuzumiro is for you. It is a really old Ryokan so of course some things can be updated but I think it keeps the authenticity of the place. The staff is super friendly, the definition of Japanese service and hospitality.
Also, despite me being vegetarian they can accommodate for allegeries and dietary restrictions (even seafood, diary, and meat). My friend, who was not vegetarian, was also able to enjoy a delicious kaiseki meal as well.

Welcome break during a tour of Japan

We stayed in a quad room and all slept on futons. We breakfasted and dined in the room which overlooked the river. At night, after visiting the onsen, we drifted off to sleep, well fed on the amazing food, with the sound of the river.
Hakone was a really interesting place to visit. I'd recommend you get a pass which enables you to use the cable cars as well as trains and buses.
We sandwiched this stay in between Tokyo and Kyoto and it was well timed.
Staff wonderful and spoke good English.

Great experience of traditional Japanese culture

Don't be put of by the bad reviews! Staying here was a great experience and one that I'd recommend anyone to experience, you just have to come here with an open mind.
It's a traditional ryokan in a beautiful setting next to a river. As it's traditional some might think it's quite basic but that's part of the experience! Our hosts were very nice and worked very hard to make sure we had a nice stay. They were able to speak a little bit of English.
The food was lovely, a highlight of our whole trip to Japan. You get 6 courses in the evening and for breakfast you are abel to choose either a Japanese style breakfast or western style. s we stayed 2 night we had Japanese one morning and western style the next
The only slight negative was that because it was next to a flowing river, it was very loud at night and I didn't have good night sleep because of that. But overall it was a great stay and experience of traditional Japanese culture

Based on the price and the hotel quality, i would not recommend this hotel. The Dinner and breakfast’s quality is quite poor, i tried other Japanese hotel, which are much better. Also, the service is just okay. There are several other Japanese style hotel nearby, with much better price, i would definitely consider other hotels next time, don’t get fooled by the ads this hotel put on internet.

Great hot spring hotel experience

Great hot spring hotel experience. Good location and friendly staff (even they speak limited English)
Century old building with great charms.
Our room with amazing river/creek view.
One challenge is no private bathroom so feel like a “glamping” but overall experience was amazing!

A cockroach was found in my room while I was about to sleep. I had to wake u my husband and killed it for me. When we informed the front desk there was a cockroach in my room, a staff came up to our room to picked up the dead body and said sorry. But he didn't offer to change room for us. I couldn't really sleep that nite, worrying that there is a cockroach family living in my room and might crawl on my futon.

This is a 130 year old traditional ryokan located about 10 minutes walk or 2 bus stops from the Hakone station. It has not been renovated at all and is very traditonal style. It was by far the most expensive lodging of our trip coming to around $1,200 for two nights for three people. The property is located next to a beautiful river and that is lovely and nice. The rooms are large. The private onsen is very nice. The bathrooms are shared. The one shared onsen I tried could use some work. Really the whole place could use a little TLC. The Kaiseki meal was very average and I had better in Kyoto. If I had to redo I would probably just stay here one night or not at all.

Fantastic experience

A great traditional inn - a completely different experience to anywhere else weve stayed! We only stopped for one night but its a beautiful spot. Staff were fab and couldn't have looked after us better. Dinner was served in our room and seemed to have an endless number of courses (we went for a western breakfast though). It has a traditional onsen with a private room which was great to try too. We got the train up to the lake which was easy to do, and its a short walk from hakone-yumoto station (can get direct from tokyo). Brilliant experience and can't speak highly enough.

Staff is very helpful and friendly. Very Clean and Nice Rooms and Baths (Onsen). Though some minor renovations needed. Small cracks and tears hear and there. No bathrooms or toilets inside rooms because of old architecture design. Need to go outside the hall to use toilet or brush teeth.

The staff was absolutely lovely and our host extremely attentive and sweet. Said that unfortunately I can not give an high rate to this ryokan. I found it very expensive for what it was if compared with other experiences and ryokan I have been to. First of all I was not a big fan of Hakone itself (or at least the area we were into), it just felt like a series of hundred of resorts and hotel attached to each other facing an highway. There was no charme. Even this ryokan though it is on a river it also faces the road, so the view is not particularly charming. The bath itself are quite small and it didn't feel super clean to me, the private room is not that charming neither. Obviously I appreciated the traditional touch of the all experience, the architecture of the ryokan itself , the futon experience etc and I think that for someone who does this for the first time it can be interesting and charming (reason why probably this place has so many good reviews), but I was coming from an amazing more modern ryokan just slightly more expensive, where everything was at such at an high standard that this one just felt average. I would have be happy and gave a good review if the price was lower but considering the cost I feel a bit disappointed. Also the dinner was so so. We had three other traditional dinners on top of this during our trip and all were way better. Again, all my 5 stars go to the staff absolutely on top of everything but I wouldn't go back sadly.
