The property is beautiful, private balcony with private onsen were AMAZING! Room was comfortable and well laid out. That part is definitely a 5*.
The staff were friendly, mostly helpful, but not so much if you got there early. They did take your stuff, but didn't help with directions on how to catch the bus or where to walk.
The food is where this property lost a star (I'd give it a 3, maybe upper 2). The dining area is beautiful and peaceful. The actual food needs some work. The first course was set out 10 min early and was meant to be warm, we arrived on time and it was cold. They proceeded to bring out each course in rapid succession and we had a ton of food in front of us. Not a proper kaiseki meal. As we dug in the food was ok, how they managed dry fish in soup is beyond me.
I'd stay here again - but would skip the food and enjoy it in town instead.
One other note - if you stay here know its at least 30min away from the lake and the majority of the Hakone Loop. So I'd suggest accounting for that in your time planning.

Hakone Airu was an awesome place to stay and such a relaxing experience. The rooms are beautiful and the staff were really friendly and helpful. The private onsen on the balcony was honestly insane and easily the best part of the stay. It’s a really cool mix of traditional ryokan vibes with modern comfort.

Clean, spacious room with your own private osen, too bad I didn't know they serve their breakfast from 7:30-11ish, I wish they have put the time somewhere on their booking page because I had to leave at 7am to catch my train and I didn't have a chance to eat the breakfast that came with my hotel booking. It cost us 800 yen to reach Hakone Airu by taxi from the train station. You can take the shuttle bus for 200 yen, but I'd note that it would be difficult to ride it with large suitcases.

Check-in process was slow (seemed like we sat in the lobby forever). Room was nice. Massages were great. The meals were a major let-down. We tried everything that came with the dinner and breakfast, and very little tasted good. I literally had only one bite of most dishes. By far, the meals at Hakone Airu were the worst meals we had in 10 days in Japan. The food tainted the experience and is the reason we took off two stars. The tub is large enough for two and the views were pleasant, even in winter. The shower took a long time to heat up and we didn't figure out how to make it work normally (it turns itself off after about 45 seconds). It was cold in the shower room and overall, difficult to regulate the temperature in our room. Check-out was also slow; not sure if they were training new staff or what. I would like to try a different ryokan at some point, but husband says nope -- been there, done that, don't need to do it again. Clearly, he was underwhelmed by the experience here too. We had an amazing stay in Kyoto, so perhaps we were spoiled by that.

Overall great experience. Would have given them a 5/5 stars, but unfortunately had an unpleasant encounter with checkout. Upon checking in, we were told that our checkout is 11 AM. Our booking information also said checkout is 11AM. At 10:10 AM, we received a phone call that we were late for checkout. Tried to reconfirm with staff that our checkout time was 11 AM, but we were told no and that we must check out immediately. We were just about to use our private onsen one last time, but unfortunately were not able to as we rushed out of the hotel room.

Please understand the room benefit of a drink credit is not applied to your bar tab. That is some drinks they put in the room at the start of your stay and call complimentary. We had drinks each night thinking we were using this credit and owed at the end. It is difficult to get a cab and the shuttle is rare. Definitely take a cab to the onsen. The hill is more than 20 minutes walk from station.

This is a great hotel for people coming from outside of Japan. Me and my fiancé stayed there for two nights and had both of our breakfasts and dinners there. For breakfast you have a choice of western or Japanese style breakfast. We chose Japanese both times. For dinner it’s a 5 course meal that was delicious. Both meals were an assortment for different foods but by the end we were both full. The most important thing to keep in mind when staying here is it’s about a 40 minute bus ride to the actual town where the lake is. I didn’t mind this however because the area our hotel was in was also really beautiful and I don’t think we would have known about it without the hotel. It was about a 2 hour ride from Haneda airport using both the Shinkansen and the bus to the hotel. Figuring out the bus was a little difficult but after showing my google maps to the bus driver they confirmed with me we were in the right spot. Lastly, for our room we got a private onsen which was a splurge but defintely worth it, especially since we were not comfortable using public onsens. The view was beautiful and defintely was a memorable part of our trip.

I stayed in the hotel for two nights and was bitten by insects many times. I asked the waitress and she said they were small mosquito bites. But when I got back to Tokyo, the physician said those were insect bites, not mosquito bites and got a proscription of some medicine. The bitten areas were hard and painful and some pus came out.

While this property could use a renovation as some of the rooms and components appear to be aging, this was a lovely stay and the staff were incredible throughout our entire time. This is a great middle of the road option for people to look for if they would like a private onsen.

Breakfast was served until 8.30 AM at the latest, Dinner was served no later than 8 PM, and if I wanted my room made up it had to be before 11 AM. When I’m on holiday I like to sleep in at least until 9AM and then get breakfast, and would at least like until 1PM to have my room made up. These are things that 3 star hotels accommodate let alone 4 star. Other than that it was a great stay and if your an early riser I do recommend. But for me it all felt a little bit rushed and on there schedule. Where I felt a holiday should be more on my time as that’s the point of it for me!

The amenities, robes, tatami, and floor bedding made it an authentic and comfortable experience. The private dinning experience for dinner and breakfast was luxurious and delicious. Overall, the hotel was quiet and a nice spot to decompress and relax before continuing with the rest of the trip. The only downside is that the property is on a steep hill, so the walk to the hotel was fatiguing but well worth it.
