We booked with dinner and breakfast. Everything was yummy and presentation was amazing. The ambient of the hotel is nice, however it feels more Thai theme rather than Japanese. Also, the plastic fake plants by the onset tub in the room really doesn't fit with the beautiful cherry blossom on the mountains.

The resort is beautiful. There is a waterfall as soon as you come in the staff is incredible. I still miss them to this day. It was my birthday weekend and they went to purchase a cake for me. My husband requested a small piece, but that was not enough. They had to buy a full cake. I had someone come to my room and give me a full body massage. You get two welcome drinks. The place is completely cleaned. It is so cozy inside we had access to tea and coffee. Every day we booked the room they came with a dinner and breakfast in every single day we were at mazed at how great the food was. You are about five minutes away from the town, which is so incredibly beautiful and there’s a bus stop in front of the hotel.

Hakone Airu was a beautiful and relaxing place to stay at. It was easy to get to from Hakone-Yumoto Station by the bus shuttle. Definitely take the shuttle if you are able to. However, if you walk, it'll take some time but you get to view the onsen city. The staff were very welcoming, kind, and thoroughly explained how the services I booked worked. My sister and I got the dinner and massage package and it was very worth it. The dinner menu was delicious and fresh and we enjoyed every part of it. Our room was very cozy and the private onsen was very nice, with a beautiful mountain view. We loved that they provided yukatas for us both. It was nice to wear them and relax around the whole resort and our room. We also liked that there were two sinks and free toiletry/hygiene products for use. Although we forfeited the breakfast portion due to other conflicting schedules, we are sure it was as good as the dinner. We would definitely come back to this place and spend more time here.

My stay at Hakone Airu was one of the highlights of my trip. The setting is beautiful — I visited on a rainy day and could see cherry blossoms against the mountains while relaxing in the private onsen, which was an incredible experience.

The room was spacious and very comfortable, and I slept well on the futons. The kaiseki dinner and breakfast were both good, and I really liked the private dining rooms, which made the experience feel more intimate.

The staff were friendly and welcoming, and the property is very well maintained. Overall, a relaxing and memorable stay — I would definitely recommend it.

Beautiful stay with exceptional hospitality, but dinner quality varied night to night

Hakone Airu was a very memorable stay, and what stood out most was the hospitality. The staff were genuinely kind, attentive, and welcoming throughout our time there. Everyone made us feel taken care of, and I especially wanted to recognize staff members whose names I may be spelling phonetically in English, including Pneun-Mo, Me-uh/Mew at the front desk, Main, and Sung Say. They were all fantastic. All of them I believe are from myanmar (Burma) and are wonderful. We wish them the best, as they truly were extremely accommodating in our requests, like leaving early to make our Shinkansen.

The property itself felt peaceful and special, and the overall experience was very relaxing. Breakfast was delicate, thoughtful, and very well done. For travelers from a Western background, some of the Japanese breakfast items may feel unique at first, but it was wholesome, balanced, and a great experience.

Dinner, however, was a bit inconsistent between the two nights. Our dinner on 03/31 was fantastic and noticeably better than the first night (03/30), attached menus. The ingredients felt fresher, and the overall quality was much higher. The clam soup was wonderful, the octopus appetizer was excellent, the onions in the soup were surprisingly delicious, the shrimp tempura was outstanding, and the wagyu was fantastic. Dessert was also a perfect finish, especially the sakura element, which felt light and

This Ryokan was outstanding. It was peaceful and stylish while also feeling authentic and very Japanese. We loved the private hot spring bath on our balcony and really enjoyed dressing in kimonos for dinner. I highly recommend this Ryokan

From the views, the relaxation you gain, the comfort of the bed and tatami mats, and of course the baths. The staff is also extremely attentive and kind. The property is beautiful, private balcony with private onsen were AMAZING! Room was comfortable and well laid out. That part is definitely a 5*.

The staff were friendly, mostly helpful, but not so much if you got there early. They did take your stuff, but didn't help with directions on how to catch the bus or where to walk.

The food is where this property lost a star (I'd give it a 3, maybe upper 2). The dining area is beautiful and peaceful. The actual food needs some work. The first course was set out 10 min early and was meant to be warm, we arrived on time and it was cold. They proceeded to bring out each course in rapid succession and we had a ton of food in front of us. Not a proper kaiseki meal. As we dug in the food was ok, how they managed dry fish in soup is beyond me.

I'd stay here again - but would skip the food and enjoy it in town instead.

One other note - if you stay here know its at least 30min away from the lake and the majority of the Hakone Loop. So I'd suggest accounting for that in your time planning.

Hakone Airu was an awesome place to stay and such a relaxing experience. The rooms are beautiful and the staff were really friendly and helpful. The private onsen on the balcony was honestly insane and easily the best part of the stay. It’s a really cool mix of traditional ryokan vibes with modern comfort.

Just be warned it’s a steep climb up there from the station and it’s about 800m walk

Incredible experience and one we’d recommend anyone going to Japan to experience. Food is incredible, very thoughtful and a fantastic experience. You can’t guarantee every course will be to your taste, but there are enough options that you will still be satisfied. The staff have put such care into your experience, it’s amazing. The staff were very helpful, especially in trying to account for my husband's dietary requirements. The room was spacious and comfortable, and the private onsen was wonderful. I enjoyed the food a lot and I recommend trying the shonan gin tonic!
It cost us 800 yen to reach Hakone Airu by taxi from the train station. You can take the shuttle bus for 200 yen, but I'd note that it would be difficult to ride it with large suitcases.

Check-in process was slow (seemed like we sat in the lobby forever). Room was nice. Massages were great. The meals were a major let-down. We tried everything that came with the dinner and breakfast, and very little tasted good. I literally had only one bite of most dishes. By far, the meals at Hakone Airu were the worst meals we had in 10 days in Japan. The food tainted the experience and is the reason we took off two stars. The tub is large enough for two and the views were pleasant, even in winter. The shower took a long time to heat up and we didn't figure out how to make it work normally (it turns itself off after about 45 seconds). It was cold in the shower room and overall, difficult to regulate the temperature in our room. Check-out was also slow; not sure if they were training new staff or what. I would like to try a different ryokan at some point, but husband says nope -- been there, done that, don't need to do it again. Clearly, he was underwhelmed by the experience here too. We had an amazing stay in Kyoto, so perhaps we were spoiled by that.

The hotel staff really tried but are very under trained. This is not somewhere where you go for Japanese hospitality. Dinner and breakfast services both felt rushed and the overall dining pairing was questionable for a traditional kaiseiki experience. There are way better options in the area and this was a big miss for us.

The dinner on the first night was perfectly balanced and one of our best experiences in Japan, but the dinner on the second night was a little disappointing. Too much meats + the hot pot Wagyu without any sauce was not very appetizing.

The area to get here can be a bit tricky so make sure to use the shuttle from the station to get here, walking back isn't as bad as you're going downhill.

Overall, my wife and I loved it and hope to be back soon.

Overall great experience. Would have given them a 5/5 stars, but unfortunately had an unpleasant encounter with checkout. Upon checking in, we were told that our checkout is 11 AM. Our booking information also said checkout is 11AM. At 10:10 AM, we received a phone call that we were late for checkout. Tried to reconfirm with staff that our checkout time was 11 AM, but we were told no and that we must check out immediately. We were just about to use our private onsen one last time, but unfortunately were not able to as we rushed out of the hotel room.

Please understand the room benefit of a drink credit is not applied to your bar tab. That is some drinks they put in the room at the start of your stay and call complimentary. We had drinks each night thinking we were using this credit and owed at the end. It is difficult to get a cab and the shuttle is rare. Definitely take a cab to the onsen. The hill is more than 20 minutes walk from station.

Fabulous! Not a negative comment about anything. Everyone was so welcoming. The food was delicious. The private onsen on the patio was the cherry on top.
Easy walk to town for us but i will add there is a steep slope that could be challenging for some with luggage so you may want to take the bus. Highly recommend this experience!
