We did not enjoy the buffet breakfast at all. Also, was pretty surprised the outdated bathroom in the lobby. The staff were okay. Room was really nice. Pillows are very firm, was only there two nights but woke up with neck pain, achy shoulder and a headache. So if you are not used to that be aware.

We had a good time and felt we got value for your money. It was about a 20 min walk from the train station with some uphill. We only had small backpacks so it was manageable. If you have luggage, it might be better to take taxi. The hotel was a little dated but the onsen made up for that. Breakfast buffet was great and offered a good variety.

The exterior looks old but the interior seems to have been renovated and it is in excellent condition including the room we were in. The private onsens are in outstanding condition, the public onsens are great although not as good. The breakfast was excellent with several Japanese and western dishes. The place is close enough to the train station to walk but far enough so that the noise of the town does not bother.

An extra-special relaxing spot

Loved the hotel! Be aware public Japanese baths mean sharing the hot springs experience with no clothing. It is separated by gender. We picked the private baths. When we wanted 3 different baths per member of the family, they suggested we only book 1 private bath and we could wear our bathing suits. It was great.

There is a room with different types of massage chairs- one for whole body, another for feet, and another for feet and legs.

We picked the half board meals. The first night was element with a guy who spoke English and explained each elegant course to us. It made the meal extra-special. The second night, we had a different waiter who didn’t speak English at all and only provided us a few minutes to finish each course apologizing before shoving each course on our crowded table. It didn’t feel special at all. I’m not sure what the hotel requires of their staff, so perhaps the first night we were just lucky.

After eating dinner, our futon beds were taken out of the closet and were made with linens and pillows (we wondered what we would sleep on when we walked in).

The town was a 10 minute walk and was so cute with tons of specialty shops and local restaurants.

We took a short train trip to Lake Ashi and took a boat tour where you could hop off/on the boat at little towns. We stopped at a small town with a museum. Inside was a panoramic view of Mt Fuji which you could also see on the boat.

I highly recommend this hotel and Hakone.

The Hakone Pax Yoshino is classed as a 3-star hotel. However despite its ageing facilities and room furnishings, this property still delivered a 4-star ryokan-style hotel accommodation for an affordable price. We stayed in a riverview room with twin beds, low-bed configuration. Then, we transferred to a standard room for our second night. The spacious rooms were neatly designed with minimalist Japanese furnishings and furnitures and laid with soft tatami mats. The standard room was a bit more antiquated in design than the riverview room. Our well-appointed third-floor room for our first night was close to the lift and had a picturesque view of the river. The rustling and murmuring sounds of the river cascades could be heard from our room and was conducive for mindfulness and relaxation. Our room for the second night was on the fourth level which had a distinct smell of antiquity. The amenities were adequate and included traditional “yukata” robes for use in the onsen and dining. Free hots drinks and popsicles (icy poles) were available all day in the hotel lobby. The open-air hot spring and indoor hot bath were equipped with toiletries appropriate for men, with onsens exclusive for women also readily available next to the designated male baths. Our riverview accommodation came with a gut-filling buffet breakfast. Our standard room came with a half board including a gastronomic kaiseki dinner and full buffet breakfast. Overall, staying here is good value for money!

Pros: The room itself was very large and spacious which we loved. The open air hot tub was nice. My wife and I also enjoyed the private onsen. By far the best part of the hotel were the amazing dinner and breakfast buffet!

We were worried about what the in-room half open bath would be like, but it exceeded our expectations. Even though it rained when we arrived, it certainly gave a different vibe. We really enjoyed our stay and the staff we dealt with were very friendly! If we get a chance to go again, we definitely want to stay for 2 nights to try the different kaiseki dinner options and check out the other private onsen options.

We waited for 15 minutes. There’s nobody in the front desk. It had happened twice. When you leave your luggage. They just piled them next to the elevator where anybody can just grab it. We don’t feel secure with our belongings. Staff doesn’t seem to care. There’s also some molds in the shower curtain

I don’t understand why but booking through Expedia end us up in a less favourable room. Either low floor or rooms near the road. For this hotel we were given a room that is near the road at level 2. Noisy especially at night. Checking in was at 3pm and checking out was at 10am !!! Will not recommend to stay.

I can’t write enough great things about Pax Yoshino. This was my first time staying at a Ryokan and it did not dissapoint. The stay exceeded my expectations. The hotel is pristine and the rooms were immaculate. The inane on the top floor were absolutely beautiful. The staff was so very nice and spoke English. The Keiseki dinner was my absolute favorite. Authentic Japanese food cooked right at your table. My only disappointment was that I could not stay longer. 10/10.

Nice hotel which gives Japanese style rooms. The staff at check-in were very helpful and allowed us to leave our bags with them when we arrived in the morning while our room was made ready (at 3pm).
Breakfast provided a good selection with mostly Japanese food.
The hotel has a 10-15 minute walk to the local train station. Pleasant surroundings with a river (with lots of wildlife) running alongside the road up to the hotel.

We choose to stay in a Japanese style room and the mattress was not super comfortable. The hallway had a terrible smell and stained carpets. The room had the smell of the mats which I didn’t really care for. That being said the breakfast and dinner was excellent.

Nice, large Japanese style rooms right on the river. Excellent breakfast, buffet with lots of options for everyone. Easily walkable into town with lots of dining options there, as long as you get there early. (A few are open later). Ping pong table as well; and karaoke rooms (for a fee). We rented the private onsen for an hour for our family, since the kids were shy about using the public ones.

Hotel was a convenient walk away from Hakone Yumoto station, about 10 minutes, and was very helpful when it came to check in and even tracking down our shipped luggage that hadn't arrived quite yet. When it did they brought it up to the room for us.

The breakfast is also quite good with both Japanese and Western breakfast options.

The room was quite clean and the staff did a great job prepping is while we were out. Overall the only downside to the room was that about half the river view balcony's boards were rotting away, and the private room onsen got very filled with bugs, very quickly if used.

The only real downside to my stay was when I came down to the lobby to see if I could get a dinner reservation in the hotel restaurant that night and help making a reservation next door for a sukiyaki restaurant that operates strictly on a \"reservations only\" basis if you want their fancier meals. The person who helped me happily informed me that under no circumstances could I get a reservation that night in the hotel, which is fine, but also that no place in the area needed a reservation. Which.. is just patently untrue. You just have to look at the website for Sukiyaki Ukon to see they only serve the most basic meal without a reservation. The website system was not completing successfully so I needed someone who spoke better Japanese than I do to help make a phone reservation. No dice here.

Hotel exterior and interior appear to be updated compared to other properties nearby, glad I booked here. The room I stayed in was Japanese tatame floor style, view of river, roomy area compared to other similar ryokan-style properties. The most memorable feature was the breakfast, the food was great with Western and Japanese cuisine available. The staff from restaurant, cleaning and reception were great as expected. The hot springs (onsen) was clean and as pictured, they interchange to men/women baths during the day which is great, you can experience all baths if staying longer. The only thing but not concerning about the property, the area is very quiet and boring, nothing to do after 8pm. I would come back here again, thanks for your business!

Close to the train station - 5 min by taxi. Shuttle also provided for certain hours which is good. Staff was friendly and provided prompt service. Reception area is really nice and open.
Liked the Ryokan setup. Glad five of us could stay in one room. Great view of a wooded area with river in the back.
However, though we were asked what time our beds needed to be made and we gave the time, the beds were not ready and we had to call someone.
Also, toilet did not have a fan which made it kind of stuffy.

We would not recommend this hotel. The pictures on the website are not at all accurate. It is a very basic hotel, with neither a cafe nor any place where you could order a drink or food. The onsen, which is a highlight of Hakone, was very basic and not worth a visit. Lastly, the hotel is quite a hike from the station and the shuttle service runs infrequently. Take a pass on this one.

The hotel is not nearly as nice as its photos suggest. The rooms were just average. There were few amenities — for example, there was no bar, nor even a place to buy food other than a few vending machines. The place simply had a run-down feel to it. Finally, was quite a long walk from the train station. We would not stay here again.

Loved this place. The walk to this Ryokan was pleasant, it was along the river. Facilities were amazing. You get to use the onsen upstairs. I'd go for the meal options here, fantastic. No complaints. Staff were lovely too and you can leave your luggage at the hotel if you want more time to explore like us.

Overall great hotel. However, upon checking in, I found the room given was not the one booked. Went to ask front desk, first they told me that was the room I booked with old bathroom, so I doubled checked my booking and showed them my booking was with a modern bathroom. Then I was told my booked room was sold out, that’s why I received a down grade. No further was given. I asked to get their manager, manager told me same thing. I was held at front desk for more than 20 mins, feeling frustrated and started googling their local consumer support, then manager offered us a room with open air bath, from this point, everything went japanese standard. Manager apologized and brought our luggage to new room. But the hustle I had to confront them with my unknowing downgrade was a disappointment.

Staff speaks English very well, way better than some five-star hotel in Tokyo.
Hotel facilities are new and pretty, however, the room we stay in is kind of old.

Hotel location is ok. It is not far from the train station. Some of hotel staffs are ok but some persons are not friendly. Also, we are disappointed about the cleanliness of the room. Ton of dust is in the air-conditioning that hang on the ceiling over the bedding. Some dust was falling down to your bed even you didn't use the air-conditioning. More, the smell of the room is not nice.

Great hotel. Staff was very helpful, my girlfriend accidentally left a few things in our room after checkout. Upon returning to check for them, they had the items behind the desk folded and put into bags for us. The Onsen’s were nice as well, with the outdoor areas having a nice view. Breakfast was good, having a few North American breakfast items like bacon, as well as many Japanese breakfast foods.

I wasn’t expecting our experience to be that great because of the bad reviews left here from other people. Facilitiies are old in some parts of the hotel but our room was clean (non smoking Japanese style room) and more spacious than expected! Tatami was new and we had a great view of the river from the room.
Japanese dinner was exceptional and the breakfast buffet was so delicious! They offered both Japanese and western style breakfast. Staff is very polite and friendly and the onsen was clean as well.

Staff was great. Location is right by a river and the running water is soothing. It is ryokan style with tatami floors. They lay out your bedding every night and put it away every morning. My daughter and son in law paid for the hour private onsen. They said it was awesome. This is a great place to experience some authentic Japanese customs.

Very comfortable stay in Hakone

This hotel is a great option in Hakone. Very well located (a short shuttle bus ride from the train station). We had a Western-style room, which was very spacious and seemed quite new. The included breakfast was great with lots of choices (both Japanese and Continental options). We decided to book dinner on our first night and it was a beautiful, multi-course traditional Japanese meal. There aren’t many dining options around (we were told that most places in the town closed early) so I would recommend dining at the hotel. By far our favourite part of the experience was the private onsen, which we booked twice while we were there. Very reasonably priced for one hour and so relaxing sitting in the hot spring looking out at the trees!

I am a bid disappointed in the hotel. There are areas smell like people just smoked. They chrage people for using ping pong table in the recreation room. I am surprised things like this is not part of the hotel free facilities. The hotel serves traditional japanese muti course dinner with fixed menu. They look great, but don’t taste all that great. Many places look very dated as well. However, i do enjoy the private bath that’s facing the mountain with option to open the window and listen to the sound of wind and the flowing stream.

The hotel is 10 minutes walk from Hakone-Yomoto train station, with a good mix of traditional and modern Japanese style. The private onsen was really enjoyable. The room was big and clean, the beds very comfortable. WiFi was good!
Communication was a bit challenging as the people at the reception do not speak much English. Please mind that most restaurants around, including the hotel's one, close very early (before 7pm) and you may need to book in advance. Sometimes there is smell of cigarettes in the corridors as they have smoking rooms on some floors.

Outstanding stay

Handy to have a shuttle to take you to the train station. Our server Sumida-san was amazing. Well spoken and patiently explained the order of each plate for our dinner. Private onsen is a great option if you don’t want feel comfortable in the public one. Having a view of the river is something great to wake up to. Wish I’d stayed here longer.

Nice hotel

Some of the staff spoke English so that was very helpful. The walk to the hotel was nice but up a slight hill. They do offer a shuttle to and from the train station. At check in and at dinner they had instructions written on a paper in English. The only thing I didn't care for was the location of the toilet and the fact that you he to walk across the room to wash your hands with soap. The price we paid as great compared to similar hotel room offers.

Nice Hotel

The hotel is located near the Hakone Station about 10 mins walk. Hotel also provide free transport till 1030 and there is Bus that provide transport to hotels around the area. (Bus A at 100 yen per pax each way.)

Nice hotel and friendly staff and a comfortable lobby. There is also onsen.

Great hotspring hotel

Good location at Hakone Yumoto. Walking distance to the train station. Very nice buffet breakfast and big room overall. There is an in-room hot spring but the bath tub was just an ordinary built-in molded bath tub, not a custom-made or wooden bath tub. Didn't managed to enjoy the outdoor hot spring due to overly exhausted during the trip.

Excellent hotel for everyone.

Hakone Pax Yoshino had a good web site providing plenty of information and was easy to book. It was located not too far from the station and had a hotel bus service. The price was reasonable with excellent service and spacious room. The room was stylish, clean, and with all necessary amenity. Highly recommended.

Quiet and walkable from Yumoto Station

Walkable from Yumoto station, located on the quiet side and next to a river. The hotel's lobby was nicely updated with a contemporary Japanese feel. Spacious room with 2 comfortable beds.

Ok but could be better

Public onsen was packed and had to wait five minutes to take shower after the dip. Then wait to get to dressing/change area and then wait for hairdryer. Ladies shaving armpits during wash area. Etiquette was poor.
Private onsen not cheap and no towels supplied so take the towel from room.
Room bed had a step in one side to sitting area next to shower door. Fell over at night as forgot that when went to loo. Buffet breakfast finished too early - 9am and no hot water for tea and one morning coffee machine broken.
Dinner served was good quality but charged for drinks besides tea. Free shuttle in morning.

Beware of Extra Credit Card Charges

Room was clean and quiet, and the meals were better than average. However, on a 2-week 5-city trip to Japan, compared to all the lodging we stayed at, I would consider this ryokan average in terms of what you get for your money. Also, a week after returning from our trip, a mysterious charge from this ryokan appeared on our credit card, with no explanation.
