When you book the fortress suite on a single or non family basis your room has no windows! A ceiling glass sheds daylight. Since the hotel is built into a centuries old fortress the walls of the room smell accordingly. Staff sweet and helpful. Location is superb, opposite busy touristy Valetta.

Warm welcome and fast check in. The room was ready even though we arrived several hours early. Fabulous large room, spotlessly clean. All staff were excellent but Nena at breakfast was absolutely brilliant and thoughtful. Beautiful location perfect for exploring and catching the ferry to Valletta. This hotel gets my highest recommendation, don’t hesitate to book.

It may be easier to list what did not stand out at this hotel! The hotel builds effortlessly on its old roots and merges historic architecture with all the amenities expected in an amazing hotel. The staff were professional and friendly at check in and throughout our stay. The room was clean, spacious, and perfect for our family. Having a kitchenette in the room made taking care of the baby so much easier. Breakfast was fresh and delicious with options for every taste. It was easy to walk to many sites and restaurants. I would recommend this hotel to everyone!

Gorgeous hotel, great location. Loved our room terrace overlooking the harbour. Had to complain about the shampoo being refilled with water but this was soon rectified by reception. Staff were all fabulous especially Martha, she always greeted you with a fabulous smile.
Enjoyed the rooftop terrace and pool even though the water was freezing!
Had a delicious meal at hotel restaurant. Happy hour drinks were enjoyed but we were disappointed that the hotel bar was closed a few days each week.

Staff could not do enough for us and we're super friendly. Caterena was a star.
Room very well equipped. Various International TV stations and free WiFi.
Breakfast was fabulous with lots of choice and cooked fresh. Great quality.
Rooftop pool was a lovely facility but lost the sun by 4:30 (Oct).
Restaurant was open Weds to Sunday for dinner and was another jem.
Situated in a tranquil suburb across from Valetta you need to take the ferry or a Taxi.
Would not hesitate to stay again

The hotel is set into the walls of the ancient citadel. The rooms are spacious, the restaurant and breakfast served excellent food.

The staff were always friendly and helpful.

The hotel welcomed us with a complimentary bottle of local wine and fruit. Then on my birthday, I recieved a card, balloons and macaroons - a lovely touch!

The commute from the airport was only about 25mins, then there is a convenient ferry from close by to Valletta which runs a regular service up to midnight.

We will absolutely stay here again next time we visit Malta.

The hotel was fantastic, & made our holiday feel like a luxury getaway from the moment we arrived. The design & layout of the hotel is stylish & well thought out, & the rooms are excellent as well with great amenities.

The rooftop pool was an excellent place to relax on an afternoon as well.

The staff are all incredibly friendly, helpful & keen to assist in any way they can.

The on site restaurant is excellent, with great quality meals for breakfast & dinner, including a great range of Vegan items.

Having seen that Cugo Gran have other hotels in locations across Italy & Spain, we wouldn't hesitate to book into one of their other hotels after our experience in Malta!

Much more than what we expected, it's a bit like Dr Who's telephone box, the hotel looks small on the outside but once you go inside, it is spacious, modern, clean, and has friendly staff. Very tentative, credit to the hotel. Also the hotel is in a great location. The only slight issue was the towels, which were very tired and in bad condition, but this was a minor issue. Look forward to the next visit.

Absolutely fantastic location!! We also stayed at The Phoenician for 3 nights (after staying at this hotel) and we wished we hadn’t left the Cugo Gran. This hotel is just perfect and boutique with incredible staff. I loved the area and felt like we could explore Malta and still come back to a beautiful and peaceful home base. We had our 6 month old baby with us and put our in-laws / grandparents in a separate room for the family vacation and eveybody LOVED it!

The only place I want to stay when I come to Malta

I cannot recommend this hotel enough. I walked passed it on my last visit to Malta and was determined to stay there on my next visit.

The room, food, cocktails, pool, service etc. were all top notch! I won't consider staying anywhere else on my next visit to Malta.

We had to move rooms but the staff contacted us and made the process incredibly simple, with the room upgrade very much appreciated.

Special shout outs to Valentina, Martha and Qwin but all the staff were brilliant.

Get a daquiri in the happy hour, you won't regret it!

Big rooms with a comfortable bed, shower room was nicely finished. The hotel had a pool on the roof terrace with great views overlooking the harbour. Restaurant food was very good. Things to improve - the suite we stayed in was damp, it had a dehumidifier in it which needed emptying regulary. The pool was dirty with debris at the bottom and floating.

Staff without exception were delightful and very helpful.
Room was spacious and clean.
Bed linen disappointing- polyester/cotton and frankly has seen better days- not however as bad as the towels and robes. They were greying , thin and rough and robes were torn in places. Brought to attention of front desk but replaced with equally old ones. Not anywhere near 5star.
Rooms overlooking harbour are quite noisy from early morning and in the evenings even with windows shut.
Breakfast in hotel was nice but very expensive- although one could eat a lot if one was up to it as the price was the same.
Dinner in Little Bastion was pretty disappointing. Cold bendy old chips ( sent back) and pretty flavourless fish with uncertain sauces. And quite expensive tho service was good.
Pool area very nice and pool menu tasty.
We enjoyed our stay and the hotel’s situation away from central Valletta , but there is room for improvement in one or two areas.

Lovely property and fantastic staff who made us feel so welcome. From the first moment when we arrived to when we left it seemed nothing was too much trouble. Perfect balance of professionalism and friendliness from all the staff, and the room was outstanding. We wish the Little Bastion had been open more than just the Friday and Saturday nights as food was excellent, but no shortage of restaurants in walking distance nearby. Great location too for getting around the island especially with the convenient ferry into Valletta. Really enjoyed our stay. Thank you.

This hotel was amazing. It’s built within an old fortress and there was some work being done for maintenance, but that is of course inevitable. If not for the maintenance, it would have been 5 stars all the way. The junior suite was huge, especially by European standards. Highly recommend to anyone who wants an interesting and unique high end experience. The only downside is there is only dinner on Friday and Saturday nights but they have a great wine collection to take back to your room and plenty to eat near by! Loved!!!!

I highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a stay close to the three cities or the Valletta area. The hotel is roughly a three minute walk to the ferry that takes you to Valletta. Impressed us most about this accommodation was the incredible staff who were extremely courteous and helpful, even going so far as to personally assist us with tracking down our lost luggage from our flight over. Our room was well kept, very clean, and offered an excellent view of the harbor. We enjoyed the Little Bastion twice for breakfast during our stay, which was delicious and convenient.

The conversion of a 500 year old fort into a unique and very cool modern hotel is just awesome. Every part of the hotel was designed perfectly. We just loved the location and the view from our room was spectacular. We would definitely come back again. The staff were all very friendly and extremely helpful. The location was perfect and very close to the ferry which takes you to Valletta. And there are great dining option in the 3 areas surrounding the hotel as well. Breakfast was really good as well as the service. We would highly recommend this property.

Spent my 40th birthday here with husband and 6 month old baby - beautiful property, the room was perhaps a little damp smelling initially with all the exposed stonework but they brought a dehumidifier into the room straight away to help and it was sorted. The staff were so so friendly, could.not have been more helpful with the baby and were so kind and attentive and made us feel so welcome. The rooftop pool is pretty chilly but that didn’t matter - think of it as ultimate refreshment in the warm weather! Breakfast was delicious and not at all restricted - order whatever you like, good portions and fabulous fresh Orange juice. Area is lovey to walk around at night by the harbour - great restaurants, easy quick ferry ride over to Valletta. Everything about this hotel was perfect and I would recommend it to anyone. Friendly Maltese hospitality at its finest - in a beautifully restored historical building - you are in for a real treat!

The Grand Harbour Macina Suite is a nice spacious room which is suites to 4 adults or maybe a family. The hotel is clean and a beautiful building. What let’s it down is the finishes for example .. flakey paint, grime around the sealant on the shower, a poor repair jobs on towel hooks which an eye sore once noticed, the pool was often not cleaned and appeared the same for a few days with muck on the bottom. However, was a nice size. The location is great if you want peace and a short boat trip to Valletta. However, cannot justify the price of the hotel. This is of course just my opinion.

The hotel location was excellent being well placed to explore the three cities and get to the ferry berth to access Valletta. It has incredible views especially from the pool terrace. Slightly quirky place would not hesitate to recommend it. Only criticism is that the restaurant service was a bit slow and food pricy against some great dining options just a short walk down the quay.

Hotel in a beautiful old building in Senglea, one of the three cities. Perfect place to base yourself out of the hustle and bustle of Valletta, knowing it’s only a 10min ferry boat away.

A handful of really nice restaurants a short walk away. Enchante was great!

A bit of wear and tear to our room and some improvements could be done with the decor but overall very nice.

Breakfast is A la Carte. Beautiful food but be mindful if wanting a buffet spread this isn’t it.

We had a four night stay for our family of 5 in December. The hotel is very atmospheric as it is built into 16th century battlements. The room was large, modern, well equiped and clean. The breakfast was amazing in the Michelin star restaurant. However the best element of all was the staff and the service. They were tremendously helpful. Whether it was at the front desk helping with advice about restaurants and activities or the waiting staff who were wonderful. Best of all they helped us find a doctors office after one of the kids felt ill on the last day.

Cugo Gran is an excellent hotel! The hotel is very convenient to the ferry, the breakfast is awesome! The restaurant where we have breakfast is actually a Michelin Star restaurant.

The property has a modern decor, relatively new. But for some reason, there was no hot water running in the shower the first night we stayed. It took slightly more than an hour to fix and we couldn't go to bed until past midnight. We also rented a car through the hotel, confirmed the night before, but 10 mins before we expected the car in the morning, the hotel told us that the car was unavailable. So we had to scramble to find an alternative. Eventually, the hotel helped us found another rental company, but we had lost 2 hours that morning of our itinerary. Some things are not in the hotel's control, but I think the handling can be done better.

We had the most wonderful stay at the Cugo Gran Macina Gran Harbour hotel. The staff team were amazing, the best we’ve encountered! Special thanks go to Marc for his attentiveness all week, nothing was ever too much trouble. The hotel is in the most perfect location to explore the local area of the three cities and there’s easy access to the ferry across to Valletta which leaves every 15 mins or so. Breakfast at the hotel is great. We also dined at the Hammett’s Macina Restaurant one evening and the food was superb. Go on a Wednesday evening and you’ll be treated to some lovely live music. The singer/guitarist Ben Bailey performed when we were in and he was terrific. All in all, a very special place…We will be back. Thank you, team Cugo Gran!

The pool area is small but we never had a problem with finding a bed. Only point of issue- we had booked the restaurant for dinner one night and when we attended, there was no record of our reservation. Modern luxury set in an historic context

A genuinely five-star experience in a beautiful harbour setting in Senglea, just across the water from Valetta.

All the staff were so friendly, accommodating and helpful- even helping us with transport options days after we had checked out from the hotel.

The foundations of the building itself are over 500 years old; quite incredible that it has been refurbished to the clean, crisp high- quality of the bedrooms and main hotel areas.

The rooftop pool is beautifully boutique and offers such a fantastic place to
chill out and enjoy spectacular views of the harbour and across to Birgu.

The food (provided by neighbouring Hammett Macina Restaurant):

Amazing breakfasts (10/10).

For lunch/dinner (7/10): good but there are lots of other, cheaper culinary options nearby.

One of the best hotels I’ve ever stayed at, historically rich and finely restored, congratulations to the owner and all involved in this beautiful revival of history. The pool is located on the lower level roof facing the marina inlet, very nicely done with great views. From the rooftop you get the best view of Valletta and Castel Saint Angelo. Friendly staff, especially the bar/restaurant. Can’t wait to go again!

Very disappointing

I booked the best room in the hotel, The Presidential Suite. The main room does not have much natural light and as soon as we walked in we could smell mould and a general musky and stale smell. We found black mould on the walls and around the window frames in the bedrooms which is where the strongest smells came from. The room is clearly suffering from damp and a lack of fresh air flow which is causing the mold and fungus to grow inside. We were left feeling very disappointed with the overall experience and we had to call reception numerous times to get anything done. The reservation was originally for 2 people (me + my son) but at the last minute the other son joined us. The hotel charged an additional EURO380 just for my other son to sleep on the sofa bed! This hotel does not represent good value for money.

A delightful hotel is a great location.
Malta is beautiful but the popular parts like Sliema and st julians bay are horrible touristy areas. Senglea has class and is really nice and a short ferry ride from central Valletta. The cugo gran was gorgeous. We had a fabulous suite and the staff were excellent. Food was wonderful and easy for us to get to business meetings too.

Thanksgiving week in Malta

Excellent hotel, pleasant and accomodating staff, great location. This unique hotel is built with modern style and amenities in an historic structure that was part of Malta's fortifications. Our room was very spacious, bed was comfortable, bathroom roomy and modern, shower was excellent - pleny of water pressure and very hot!

The hotel is located on a marina across the harbor from Valletta, and within easy walking distance of shops and restaurants. The ferry across the harbor is a very short walk away, making access to central Valletta easy with an affordable 10 minute ferry ride, while staying in a quieter and less touristy area.

i would like to note the helpfulness of the staff. We arrived in mid-afternoon after a long flight with no lunch, so we went out to find a snack at one of the local cafes, but it happened that all the electricity was out and all the places were closed. The hotel had its own power, but its restaurant had also closed for lunch. Nevertheless, the staff gave us a table, and made a full anti-pasto platter for us. Not many hotels would be so accommodating.

The only reason I did not rate it higher is they claim to have a full spa on the website, but there actually is no spa faciltity. They said thay can arrange massage treatments with an outside provider, but we chose not to do so. Other than this, the hotel was as described and very nice.

A lovely contemporary conversion of an old fort. The room was very comfortable and spacious. I was travelling with my mother. She would have preferred more light over a mirror to apply make-up and there was no mirror adjacent to a power point to use a hairdryer for hair. There were no handrails on the main staircase so my mother felt vulnerable using this stair case. The proximity to the marina was excellent and the views stunning.
