Great location wth lots of nearby shops and cafes. All the staff were very kind, friendly and helpful. Stairs may be a bit of a challenge for those with mobility issues, but staff readily assist. I would definitely stay here again.

The shower was blocked causing a stong smell to fill the bathroom meaning we kept the bathroom door closed. The drain was blocked but I only discovered this in the morning when we had a shower and the water nearly flooded the bathroom.
We didn't want to hang around so I checked the drain. Despite the smell indicating something was wrong, it clearly had't been serviced for a few years. I had to clear it out so we could shower.
The room itself was looking quite tired and the walls were a bit grubby in places. Well over
due decorating.
The bed was average, certainly not a treat to sleep in.
A lovely location and could be so much more.
I wouldn't choose to stay there again.

The staff were wonderful and extremely helpful. If it were up to them, alone, then I would rate the hotel 5 stars. Additionally, rooms are quite spacious. Please note that there are also way more stairs than expected but that wasn’t the biggest issue. But if you do travel heavy, with that, this is not the best hotel for you (for both your sake and the staffs’). The biggest issue was the noise coming from the street. The noise was so loud and clear that initially I had thought the windows were open, but that was not the case. The noise did not die down until about 3:30 am and then street cleaning started at around 6/6:30 so I got a maximum of 2 hours sleep which really defeats the purpose of paying for a hotel. Additionally, I stayed during the Christmas market (I’m not from here and didn’t know there would be a market in that specific spot) and that made the noise exponentially worse. It was also quite cold and I had no idea if there was heating or how to turn it on, if there was. It is unlikely that I’d stay at this hotel again (the noise was just way too much even with the lower price of the hotel), but kudos to the staff for all their help with my luggage.

The staff were friendly and my room was spacious. Nice selection of teas as well as a cute complementary toiletries set. The room overlooks the street where the Christmas market was being set up so a little noisy. Also late night drinkers walking by below in the night were not quiet. However, these small disturbances were made up for by the excellent location for site-seeing, pubs and restaurants. Would stay here again.

Very nice hotel, located in the city centre, within 10min walking distance from the rail station. Welcoming, friendly and helpful reception. Comfortable quiet clean bedroom at the back with air con, great toiletry kit and coffee & biscuits selection. The narrow stairs were ok for me but this could be difficult for people with large suitcase. Person at reception kindly offered to take bags to the room if any problem. If it had breakfast facilities this would be perfect but they do offer voucher for next door cafe/restaurant. I would recommend it and would stay there again on my next visit to Oxford.

We had an excellent stay at the buttery. It was a very convenient location and the room was very suitable. There was plenty of storage, places to sit, and it was easy to access outlets for charging our devices. The showers and bathroom were nice and the air conditioning was very effective. During the day, there was some noise from the street but at night it had become completely quiet.

I loved staying at the Buttery! The location was perfectly centralized and you could walk to everything. The room was clean, cool, and I appreciated the daily tea and water that was replenished in the room. It was also very quiet, despite being so centralized. And reasonable!!! Just be aware of what this is - it is a \"guesthouse\" - so DON'T expect it to be a 4-star hotel on a great deal. The room was nice, but they seem to have engaged in a box-checking exercise to achieve 4 stars for the room (like having portable air-conditioners going out of the windows) without the feeling of a 4-star hotel There are no public spaces whatsover. The location is very central, but unfortunately this means that it looks right over the wooden benches on Broad street, where you will likely have teenagers hanging out and making lots of noise until well past midnight. Parking is also on your own, which will be super expensive.

Nice large bathroom however no where to place toilet bag, clothes ,no stand or table, but plenty of space for that.
No where to park close by or drop off..
Had large suitcase and had to drag it up 4 flights of steps.
Car park was quit a walk away with cases and the price to park was extausanate..

Perfect place for us to stay that is centrally located to the University of Oxford and to the sites and activities. Oxford is a very walkable city. There is not a lift so this is not an accessible hotel as it is in a historic building above several stores. That being said the staff were so very kind and helpful and we had a wonderful stay!

We liked: Old fashioned property with local charm. Walkable to everything that Oxford has to offer, the university, shopping, culture, pubs. Short walk also to bus depot and train station.

The room was spotless. The bathroom modern and well appointed. The staff was friendly and helped with our luggage.

If you are in need of ambulatory assistance or not in good physical condition, you should request a room on the first floor. We are in our 70s. The stairway to our 3rd floor room was narrow and somewhat trying.

When you check in request a top sheet for the bed. The quilt was way too thick and hot.

My only complaint is the door uses a physical key and when your in your room you must use the key to lock it! I would suggest that they put a lock on the inside! I feel this could be a fire hazard as it took me a few minutes to get the door locked and unlocked.

The location of this hotel is excellent, in the centre of the city and in walking distance of all that Oxford offers. The room was comfortable but getting a bit shabby. The bedside cabinet prevented access to the wardrobe and there was a ventilator cover hanging loose. But the staff were helpful and the room was a good size with a nice view of Balliol.

The Buttery Hotel review for 11/30/24 - 12/01/24

I stayed at The Buttery Hotel for one night. I had requested a street facing room but in retrospect, a non -street facing room might have been quieter as there was noise from people in the street well after midnight. It was a very comfortable room, bed, bathroom. Check-in was easy once I found the hotel and person who checked me in was very and offered to carry my bag up to my room which was about 32 steps upstairs. I was also able to leave my bag at the hotel the next day so that it could be securely stored while I was out and about in Oxford before leaving by train late that day. I think it is a great option for 1 - 3 nights, not a luxury hotel but far more affordable. Just be prepared for many narrow steps.

This was my fifth stay at the Buttery. Its location is superb. I always prefer a room at the back, as Broad Street during term time can be a bit noisy at night, but this time my room was blissfully quiet even though there was a Christmas Fair going on outside in the front. The room/bed/bathroom were all wonderful and well equipped as usual. Staff are fabulous -- extremely helpful and kind. The stairs can be a challenge (no elevator) but I was able to get help with my suitcase. Charming view from the window of medieval colleges and other buildings. I just love staying at the Buttery.

This is a charming boutique hotel right on a pedestrian street that has food vendors, kiosks selling souvenirs and trinkets, live music, and a carousel. Very well situated! My only complaint is that the floor was very creaky, meaning that I could hear other patrons getting up in the night.

The location of this hotel in the heart of Oxford is why I picked this hotel. Overall, a nice and comfortable stay in a pleasant and clean room. It's a small hotel on one of Oxford's main streets next to some of the prominent universities and sights to visit. No restaurant, but a discount offered in a cafe next to the property.

A lovely hotel—fair price for the area, a superb location within walking distance to basically everything downtown, a clean room with a comfortable bed, newly renovated bathroom with excellent water pressure in the shower, and coffee, tea, water and cookies available daily in the room. I would’ve liked a small fridge to store perishable snacks in but that’s not a deal-breaker and I’m sure it would get expensive with the electricity. 10/10 would recommend, I’ll definitely stay here again for my next trip!

Great location very easy to walk about Oxford centre. Had a 'Superior Front Facing Double Ensuite' for two nights, large and clean, but let down by a number of faults in the bathroom (loose towel rails, loose sink tap, leaking toilet cistern and poorly sealed shower screen). Decor also not giving a 'premium' feel. However bed comfortable and room quiet, so good nights rest! Staff friendly and welcoming. Have stayed here before but not in a 'superior' room, cannot beat the location!

The Buttery is in a perfect location, very central but on a pedestrianised street with a lovely vibe to it. The staff were very welcoming and the room was very bright clean and spacious. The en suite looked newly fitted, very clean and with a great power shower and a little bag of toiletries which is a nice touch.

Small little 'boutique' hotel in the heart of Oxford. Nice sized room, and had everything we needed for our short stay. We are a big family and we booked two rooms, they made no effort to keep us close rooms and we even lived on the 1st and 3rd floor.
There was no hot water on the 3rd floor.
The room on the first floor was crooked with the bed that would fall apart in a few nights.

The hotel is in a very safe area and next to the oxford walking tour site. The staff was very kind and the room is super clean.

Be award that you will hear people if they talk loudly on the street at night.

It will be much better if a toilet paper holder and a (hanging) shower shelf are installed in Room 104.

City centre hotel perfect for a weekend break. Yes it was noisy in the evenings, but its in the city centre. Yes the stairs going up to the rooms are creaky, but it didnt bother us. Comfy bed, good shower, felt like the room had been recently decorated. The staff kindly held our bags after check out so we could make the most of our final day. All in all, a really good stay.
