Located within Georgetown, it is within walking distance to many of the attractions in Georgetown. The food selection and availability is also incredible. What is most attractive though about this property is that is retains so much of the original vibes of a peranakan shophouse. The blend of historical furnishing and modern amenities makes for a nostalgic and yet comfortable stay. The only setback is its location along a narrow road. This means getting on and alighting from transport is going to pose some challenges, and the noise from the roads gets in if you are in the road-facing rooms like we were.

Its is ideal for larger groups and we would definitely recommend it for families or larger group of friends.

There was absolutely nothing what we did not like!
We loved the history of the place, it was unique and the staff Ben, Sandra and Bell were wonderful. Always there with a smile and little ideas what to do next.
The room was huge and super clean. So many details every where and so quiet.
Outside is the hustle and bustle which is super great and inside is peace and quietness!
We would come back any time.

A Quiet and Relaxing Refuge

We liked this place-- and George Town--very much. Sandra's attention to service-- making us feel welcome, well-fed, and helping us to discover the layout and sights of Penang-- was exceptional. Her restaurant suggestions were very good. She was also very kind to my 7-year old granddaughter. The hotel and our room were very clean. The location is very good for exploration of George Town.
Minor suggestions for improvement include:
-Make sure rooms have more toilet paper
-Soap is refilled in bathroom
-Clarify clean towel replacement policy.

Friendly and hospitable staff with personalised service. A good stay to experience how an old Peranakan house is like. Location was pretty good too. Only issue we had was with the water heater, but it was resolved quite quickly upon bringing it up to the staff.

They were people that we interacted with the most. Nick can always be seen smiling & he makes you feel right at home!

An oasis of serenity in the bustle of central Georgetown, you won't find a better place to stay. Smashing location - right in Little India with food and market stalls on the streets, central to the Old Town with street-art everywhere and a few minutes walk to the main bus station. The hotel is a scrupulously clean immaculately restored old mansion with spacious rooms and all the amenities. The staff are wonderfully friendly and attentive. You won't be sorry you chose to stay at East Indies Mansion but you will, like us, be sorry to leave.

I love the ambience once you step inside at the entrance, vintage and luxury on its own. The room is also really comfortable, their staff are really kind and helpful. We stayed for 2 nights in Nutmeg C. The hotel located at Little India, which is why it is hard to find a parking if you are driving. The area is also easily accessible by public transport so no problem if you don't rent a car. It was a pleasant stay and I will choose this place if I come to Penang again :)

The downstairs room we were in was subject to noise from the room above due to wooden floors and probably no insulation. Management was informed and they requested the upstairs guests refrain from walking about heavily. This helped partially alleviate the problem.

It is very convenient hotel location to sightseeing.
It takes only 10min by walking to major point.
And atomspher is very good for feel along time ago in Penang.
But I have 2 minus points...
One is there was some hairs in the bed.
Other was worried about mosquito bites.
Hotel prepare the insecticide, but it dosen't work because room area is very large.

Generally, I feel very good hotel.

The Mansion is located along a side road on the boundary of Little India. The Nutmeg suites are on the ground floor, and because the flooring is wooden, footsteps from the upper floor can be easily heard throughout the day and night. Wifi was very weak in the room. Towels were not changed by housekeeping, and only upon request. The only good thing is that the mansion is centrally located, and within walking distance to most attractions in Georgetown.

East Indies Mansion in Georgetown Penang is a quaint base to explore the town. Staff were extremely helpful and friendly especially Ges. A stay to remember...

The service is what sets this accommodation apart from the many others I have stayed in the past with a special thanks to Jess, Linda and Vijay for going out their way to make me feel at home. The accommodation itself is a 250 year old heritage building thus comes with many of its original features and character still remaining. It has a sense of a calm ambiance which is a nice change from the hustle and bustle of Little India where it is situated which means you get the best of both worlds. We stayed in the Cinnamon room situated at front of property made up over two floors (with interconnecting spiral staircase) double beds on each floor (bathroom situated on 1st floor). The only improvement I would make here is that they need an aircon on the ground floor of the room (currently only upper floor of the room has aircon unit but Jess helped us with a temporary air cooler) as it can get really hot at night, both floors do come with ceiling fans though.

Room was good for 3, inclusive of loft. Staff was friendly.

Toilet/shower facility can be better - need more counter space for toiletries. No hot water from shower.

Sheets are ok, with room for improvement - better quality.

Rustic family time get away.

We had 6 people across 2 rooms. The rooms were large, simple, no TV or refrigerator ( you can use the main kitchen refrigerator). The hot water was the best ( amount and pressure) I have experienced in the shower.
The breakfast was able to be modified to accommodate some eating challenges of our group. The staff were welcoming, friendly and ever helpful. Loved the drinks served in the afternoons ( cold water/tea if returning from outside, hot tea if in the room).

This is a beautiful place to stay, and central location means that you're in easy walking distance to anywhere in the historic district (one of the best Indian restaurants is just over the road!).
The staff are super friendly and helpful if you need information, or just sit back with a tea and relax in the courtyard.
I booked a late deal and got an incredible room with a 'shared' bathroom (technically it is only you that uses this as the other rooms are ensuite). The room was massive, with a huge comfortable bed. Breakfast included. If I could get the same deal every time I wouldn't stay anywhere else! (They are usually full so I was super lucky - I tried twice the previous visit).

Grand old 1700's building. Big rooms but lacking some amenities like a clothes hooks mirrors better lighting. The bad part of our room was the bathroom was not connected. We had to go outside and down the hall. It had no air con in the bath and was extremely hot.
It was a private bath but we somehow missed that it was not connected.
Otherwise a great place.

Quaint guesthouse in the perfect location

We enjoyed our stay at this guesthouse despite a major inconvenience.

The awesome: Lovely daybeds in the courtyard which we could lounge on when the afternoons got too hot. Beautiful furnishings. Complimentary drinking water throughout our stay, and we appreciated little touches like jars of iced water with lemon and cucumber placed in the public areas.

The good: Friendly and accommodating staff who went the extra mile of preparing bread and hard boiled eggs for us in advance (we signed up for a morning cycling trip which meant we had to leave the guesthouse before the breakfast hour). Beautiful and spacious room with comfortable bed and pillows.

The bad: We were placed in Nutmeg A room on the ground floor. Due to the construction of the building, the wooden ceiling planks creaked loudly every time the people staying above us moved (even walking created a lot of noise). And we were kept awake till late that night as the guests were up till 2-3am and moved quite a lot :(

It was a very pleasant stay, we rented a family suite. The staffs were very friendly and helpful. They will chat with us like a family. I like the dinning area very much as it is very homely. It is like a very quiet backyard where you can just sit there the whole day reading your book and enjoying your coffee. The only complaint is that the stairs are very steep I am glad my mum is not with us. Some suggestion, replace the rusty bathtub and convert the area to become a dressing area. We love the location of the mansion, is very convenient to travel to anywhere, CAT bus stop 3 is just round the corner and the bus terminal is just 5 min walk away.

The upper room was ok but the lower room do not have any bathroom n toilet facilities which makes it very inconvenient and the wall plaster keep dropping. I think it's a lovely wee place with big rooms.

This was a lovely wee place and it had nice big cozy rooms with high ceilings and a wee kettle to make your tea and coffee in the morning or indeed any time of day. It also had a nice wee breakfast and a lovely wee helpful lad on reception. Lovely art on the walls and very soft sheets that my girlfriend loved. Altogether lovely and beautiful.

Tranquil place to stay

Definitely love this hotel as it has really tranquil and relaxing atmosphere inside the room and hotel. The room is really spacious, clean and filled with citronella smell to fight off insects. I definitely obsessed with the long and big sofa inside the living room. The price is really affordable as well. only downside i may say is the noise of the restaurant behind the hotel when they are closing the store. However, the noise subside as clock pass 12 am so shallow or early sleeper may want to be aware on this.

Stumbled upon this place because it was close to the Langkawi ferrys. We've been traveling all around Malaysia and this place was the best. Situated in the middle of Georgetown with very nice restaurants all over the place.

A very beautifully restored shophouse. The family room was huge. The service staff are very friendly. The hot shower did not work for the first night but they fixed it quickly. Breakfast was prepared on the spot and a nice touch on the fruit platter and fresh juice. The resident cat was adorable we loved her! Overall a great find in Georgetown.

Two nights in a classic heritage city

Two nights and only one day in Penang, so we packed a lot of walking into our day. We left early the second morning and the owner kindly packed us a basic breakfast to take with us (as we left before breakfast time).

There was no window in our room which we could open, so there was no natural light. The hotel is a good renovation of an original building in the Heritage area and in the middle of the old area.

A beautifully restored heritage house with 7 individual rooms grouped around a courtyard.The house is furnished as a home rather than a hotel, with nice artwork and nice pieces of furniture. It is shabby chic style. We had a standard room..very large room..only slight niggles were lack of bathroom shelving and hearing upstairs guests on the wooden floors. There is also a cat who meows at night. These are very small niggles which are more than compensated by the pleasure of staying in such a lovely building. The staff are very attentive and friendly, some 5 star touches, like providing us with glasses of ice cold water when returning to the hotel after a hot day out, lighting an oil burner early evening so the room smells lovely, putting lamps on, replacing water in the jug etc. The hotel arranged laundry at very reasonable prices and also our onward transport. Nothing was too much trouble. Breakfasts were very good. The
accommodation is ideally situated near a bus terminal, jetties, Little India and heritage areas.

We had stayed in many hotels on our 2 month travels through Indonesia and Malaysia, this is the best accommodation of the trip. Wonderful stay. And must mention, Georgetown is a great place.

Experience in a real historic building.

The staff in the hotel is flawless, always willing to help.
The structures, though, are not very comfortable. The hotel is installed in a old building and one should be prepared to that, for the worse and the best.

highly recommended!

Awesome stay cos we got a good deal! The place wasn't the easiest to find (I took bus 401 from airport and walked from jetty) but once you figured that out, your daily trips will be so convenient cos the hotel is just few mins walk from the free CAT bus service stop no3. The room was really spacious and clean (deluxe rooms) but the common area needs a bit of cleaning. Overall a wonderful stay as staff were so welcoming, friendly and helpful!

Nice historic hotel

We enjoyed our time at the East Indies Mansion. We had a suite, which was actually two floors. We never used the downstairs area as there was no AC in that section, only upstairs where the bed was. The lighting in the bathroom was very dim and hard to get ready in the morning. The bed was comfortable and the room stayed very dark which was nice. I think if we went to George Town Penang again we would choose a hotel north of Little India, as we spent most of our time in that area where the restaurants and bars are.

A very charming property

Stayed in the family room which is a duplex that comes with a massive living room. Space is fantastic and overall pretty comfortable. A charming property. The only drawback is that it does not have a TV in the duplex room. Love the quietness at the breakfast table in the morning and it has that homely feel to it too.

Best hotel I stayed at In Malaysia

Right from the moment I walked in, the service was great. The room was massive, clean, well serviced, clean toilet and oil burner scent. The mansion was very well decorated, friendly service and had a homely feel. The guys at reception were very friendly and gave information about nearby tourist attractions. They went out of their way to provide great service. I needed a massage after a day long walk at 10pm and they organised a massuese in 15 mins. As I had to leave at morning at 7, they organised the breakfast to be served at 6:30am instead of 8am. They also organised a cab to pick up.

The service was amazing and this was the best hotel I stayed in during my 4 weeks travel in Malaysia and Singapore.

Nice room, Great service. Fantastic!

I went to Penang for holiday with my friends and we all love this boutique hotel very much. The room was very big with 2 bedrooms and one living room and very nice decoration. Breakfast was yummy. Great service. Thank you Jessie and everyone at East Indies. If we have a chance to go back to Penang, we will definitely stay at East Indies. Highly recommended!

Nice homely place close to sights

We are in our 70s and wanted a quiet room in close walking to local sites and it fitted the bill admirably.The staff couldnot do enough for us and helped in so many ways- such as hanging some washing outdoors to dry, supplying fresh milk instead of creamer.The aircon drain became blocked while we were there, leaking water but was promptly fixed.Jessie, the front dek staff was so solicitous.He ordered a taxi on request, gave us local advice.The room we booked did not appear as large as the one pictured in the advertisement but he moved us to another , slightly larger room.Other guests made the same complaint and were moved [we got their discarded room] They had to ascend a tall steep spiral staircase to access their room- not good if you are elderly. It was nice and quiet, the breakfast limited but adequate with beautiful fruit juice, fruit and about 6-7 choices of cooked breakfast. I recommend the omelette. The bed was king size and the bed linen lovely We stayed 4 nights for under $AUD400 and considered it value for money

Great location, pleasant staff, comfortable room

The location was great, I could walk from Komtar to the inn easily. On the second day, I discovered that the bus terminal is nearby so I didn't have to find the bus stops around town - which are not marked - nor was there any trouble going to and fro Komtar and the airport. There is good Indian food nearby, and a slightly more upscale cafe just down the road if you miss those sort of things.

Our favourite stay

Just the name gives you the feel of this guesthouse. Our room had a few problems and when these were brought to the attention of the staff we were moved to another room. The staff were just fantastic, they were friendly and eager to please. The location was great on the very edge of Little India and really added to the overall feel of our stay in Georgetown. Again the building has the feel of 200 years ago that fulfilled all of our dreams for our 5 day stay.

Visually beautiful, welcoming and comfortable.

A sanctuary that I loved coming home to each of the 4 nights I stayed. Located in Little India this provided a great base for exploring George Town and is near the bus station for those wishing to take the very cheap and frequent local buses around town or to the beach. So much is accessible on foot too as the streets are filled with cafes and historic points of interest or street art. This place was recently owned, restored and decorated by an artist and everywhere I looked there was a photo opportunity of either a vibrant piece of art, a tranquil courtyard or interesting retro furniture…some antiques too. Aesthetically it is beautiful and I made the day bed in the courtyard my special place every afternoon before hitting the streets again for more walking and dinner. I would always be greeted with a cold glass of water, a smile and the offer of green tea and cake for afternoon tea while I read through their abundant book and magazine collection on Penang past and present. The staff are lovely, warm people who were so helpful to me and my accommodation was a downstairs living room and a large upstairs bedroom and bathroom. I was not expecting 2 rooms so this was great value for money. I would go back in a heartbeat.

In the heart of Penang

This is a refurbished historical mansion, with all the old world charm. when I first arrived, I was not sure I had made the right choice, having come from the very luxurious Traders Hotel in KL. But my room was huge, the bed comfortable with luxurious linens, the open air of the mansion very charming, and the staff generous and kind. more importantly, it is imbedded in the neighborhood, close to all the great food and historical sites.

Best of all was the service, we were a family of 5, arranged an airport transfer for us, upgraded us to a family suite as it was Mother's Day and my dad's birthday. Accommodated a late check in and late check out request, gave good dining suggestions. And of course, the beautiful heritage mansion. Highly recommended for those going to Penang!

Lovely hotel!

Stayed here with my partner for one night as we wanted a base to explore Georgetown from while on holiday in Penang. This little hotel was amazing! We were upgraded to a suite when we arrived which was lovely. It was based in a central location which enabled us to explore little India and surrounding streets.
The rooms were well maintained and were very spacious. The only downside was that in our room we didn't have any coat hangers to hang up anything that you didn't want to get creased. There was no fridge but we were invited to use the fridge in the kitchen. A bottle of water was placed in the room and was filled whilst we were out during the day. While we were out during the afternoon one of the very helpful staff put lemon grass incense oil in our room to keep out the mosquitoes and they even put petals on our bed which was a nice touch.
The house itself is beautiful inside with nice little seating areas dotted around. The staff are very friendly and helpful!
You do need to put down a RM50 deposit for the room key which we had no problems getting back.
We would definitely recommend this hotel to other couples looking to explore Georgetown.
