Not so good, dirty and small washroom, bed not comfortable. The owner is only interested in making money. No lift at this place. Stairs are dark and in a bad shap. Absolutely uncomfortable place. The description given by the owner is deseptive and false.

This building was more than a century old! Many of the furnitures in the room are antiques too! The room is fine, othen than the fact the there is no private bathroom - 3 rooms share one in each of the two floors. The bathroom is in disrepair and the walls had water leak marks. Someone may not accept this as condition for hostal, but for a 100 yrs old building, can't argue much. Location is prime. Very convenient for transportation, dining, grocery, laundry, touring etc. The host Antonio was very helpful, and provided

Rustic property that is not a B & B! (Room Only!)

Don't be fooled by the B & B in the title! What breakfast? There is only tea/coffee & sugar on display. Everything else you have to buy yourself.
This rustic property with antique furniture is a cross between an Air B&B to a Hostel. Good North/Central location. If you don't mind sharing the two bathrooms (ceiling mould in one) and one kitchen, then this is for you! By the way, you will be sharing two other rooms. Our first night was cold so kept my fleece on top of P & Js. It's going to be Hotels all the way from now on for us!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The BnB is in a perfect location near the trams, castle, and Alfama old town area of Lisbon. Antonio, the host, was very helpful in getting us checked in. He also gave us many useful tips for sightseeing, transportation, and dining in Lisbon. He even gave us a short tour by car when we arrived of the area near the hotel.
Our room was large and well equipped for our needs, and the underground free parking was easy to access and navigate. Best of all the Bnb is loaded with character and charm - an old Lisbon townhouse full of antique furniture. And it is very affordable! We loved our stay at the Macedo Family B&B and are very happy to recommend it to others.

Great location. Parking space is a plus.
Beautiful home.

Bad sides: the doors are really LOUD so whenever someone is entering the floor you’re in, you’ll wake up. Also, the cathedral/church next door rings its bell very often and very early... There’s too many religious signs in the room which is kind of weird if you’re not into religious things. Finally, there was no “real” breakfast. Just some okd cereals, some coffee/tea... disappointing breakfast.

Great location in Lisbon near major street that leads down to heart of historical area, ocean, etc. and walkable in 10-20 minutes. Also near metro stops, groceries, restaurants, and money exchange site. Older building, so stairs sort of a pain to deal with, but nice bedroom, shared bathroom, and great kitchen and dining areas. Many keys needed to enter bldg, floor, and room, and while sort of annoying, at least facility felt very secure. Great hosts and cleaning crew with suggestions as to what to see in Lisbon.

The Family Maceto is run by its owner Antonio. Antonio is very helpful and has good information about the city. There are no private bathrooms but the two bathrooms are being kept very clean at all times and are conveniently located. There is a kitchen available for general use and the basics, bread, butter, coffee and marmalade are provided for all the guests.The room was comfortable and although it was on the street side, noise of the street did not bother us and was not disturbing. The place is located close to the subway and other public transportation and also within walking distance (20 minutes or so) to some of the interesting sights in Lisbon. One can find a supermarket and several decent restaurant in the direct neighborhood. Overall I would say that this is a nice basic place.

I’ve used Hotels.com for years, and have always had great experiences, and written good reviews -not so this time. I was there for five nights with a friend. Our first
“oh no” was during check-in. We felt practically held hostage in the little office while the manager(owner??) talked on and on for almost an hour, often putting down Americans for their habits and food choices. Not quite the welcome we hoped for. We always tried to be quiet in the hallway walking by his office, hoping that he wouldn’t come out and start talking on and on again.
The facility was ok, clean enough. One issue was that there was only one hair dryer for the whole place. It was never available -we went for days not being able to locate it, and just skipped washing our hair. Not a good feeling.
The internet did not work at all in our room - we spent hours standing in the hallway at all hours, waving our phones in the air trying to get a connection. Not good for trying to do our travel research, or communicate with friends/ family back in the US.
On the last full day, a fuse was blown and the electricity went out as we were all getting up and ready for the day. I chatted with a gal on hotels.com who said he was on his way to check it out - but we found out later that he was a few hundred km away... the girl in charge was yelling at him on the phone -it was chaotic and not pleasant for us. Would never stay there again, or recommend.

Horrible bed, not worth convenient parking

Overall we were very disappointed because the bed was horrible! The bed was very very hard and small. I suspect that it is antique, like all the rest of the furniture, but I could barely sleep and got horrible neck pain.
It was difficult to tell if the shared bathrooms were clean as they were old and needed a bit of updating.
Breakfast is not actually served, but some milk bread and Jam were left in the kitchen.
The owner is very nice and helpful. The parking was also very convenient!
Also note only one room has air conditioning so you will need to request that room if you like air conditioning.

For heavy sleepers only

I had a horrible time here overall. Some positives: it’s a charming house and is well-located. But two big negatives. First, it's very noisy – other guests’ footsteps, bathroom visits, snores, etc, all echo through the whole place. Also the room I was in was not light insulated. Not sure if some of the rooms might be better, which brings me to the second negative. I asked twice to change rooms. The first time my weariness was dismissed (it was suggested it must be my problem because I must live in the countryside – I live in a bigger city than Lisbon…). The second time, which was late-ish in the evening, the manager told me he was leaving for his place ‘in the country’ in the morning but would leave a note for the other staff to move me to another room. I had to go meet a work colleague the next day and couldn’t find any staff in the morning, despite a quite extensive search, so packed my bag hoping they could move it between other guests checking in and out. I reiterated my request in an email as well. Found out when I got back that evening that the manager never bothered to pass on the message and the emails were ignored (or were only accessible to the manager who wasn’t there?). So I was uncomfortable and unhappy staying here because even though the manager comes across as really helpful (I think he likes to give advice) they don’t seem to care if people actually have problems. So ok for heavier sleepers (who don’t mind some mansplaining). Lighter sleepers should avoid.

We were very satisfied with our stay in this hotel ,especially Denise gave us a lot of information about all we were interested in.Antony was also very pleasant and always busy 😂person.We had little misunderstanding with our food in the fridge because someone took our cheese that we bought in the shop so after that we packed our private food in our bags and wrote notice that it was private.We recommend this hotel to everyone who wants to have nice time in so fantastic city and wish to see a lot because it’s only 15 minutes to go to the center and there’s metro 🚇 station 5minutes from it.We recommend also to buy Lisbon card.

We only got to stay the 2nd night. Our flight was delayed by a day and we were able to access the room at a very early time on Thursday. It was an easy trip from the airport by metro. Very good directions given by the b&B. The antiques were lovely, but the bed squeeked too much. We had the suite with two beds so my husband and I each took a bed to lessen the squeeking.

Beautiful Property

Book this B&B to feel like you're staying with a local family! The apartment is situated a short 10-15 minute walk to the main attractions, but along the way, you'll bump into life outside the tourist area. Super comfortable beds, clean (shared) bathrooms in the hallway, very secure home. Enjoy coffee or tea in their large inner courtyard space and grab a pastry from a local bakery down the street. I would definitely stay here again!

Antonio and Sebina worked hard to be gracious hosts at this property. This was a good value for us because we were stuck with a rental car and they have a parking garage in the building that you can park for free with easy access. This is more of a guest house/hostel than a B&B, although there are some basic items available in the shared kitchen. The bathrooms are shared, which was only a minor inconvenience for us, but might be a problem for some. Walls are thin, so
you can hear other guests. Close to public transportation, historic areas and shopping.

Overall, great value and great service!

PROS: Communications are top-notch. Once confirmed, you receive instructions emailed to you, with helpful tips and nearby recommendations while visiting Lisbon. Sabina checked me in efficiently and provided me with helpful info to orient me as a first-time tourist in Lisboa. Rooms are decorated with antique furniture, and all that is advertised in the pictures for the hotel booking is accurate. Rooms are clean. The room and bed were extremely comfortable. My room was located towards the back so it was very quiet at night. Free parking for my rental car was extremely helpful in this city of scarce parking. The building was located only 2 blocks away from the main street, which is flat. Therefore, one did not have to walk up too many steep hills to return home.

CONS: Amenities are not modern, but it was to be expected from the description. Also, Old Town Lisbon is only a 15-20 minutes walk away, but the neighborhood felt dark and gritty. Or that could just be the current economic state of Old Town Lisbon. But I felt completely safe within the building.

Overall, good value and great service!

We were given a choice of rooms after parking our car in the secure garage. Antonio was wonderful and helpful, a very interesting man. We enjoyed chatting to house guests from Sweden in the morning. I would stay here again.

Hotel over sold itself. We were not given the garden view room we booked (instead we got concrete walls). The free breakfast was of such poor quality we did not eat it. The WiFi did not function in our room and even in the dining room it dropped the signal every few minutes. There was no room to relax in as advertised. There was a dining room that was so small that four large people could only just sit round the table. Usually my reviews lean on the positive side but I can not in good conscience suggest anybody use this establishment. A good nights sleep is impossible you can hear every sneeze and snore from nearby rooms. There are clear glass windows above the bedroom doors which means no darkness in the rooms. There is no heating or cooling so don't stay in winter or summer.

I love the hostel!

The hotel is clean and comfortable. The manager is a most helpful man and leave you nothing to guessing. Beside he is a very nice man. The crew are efficient. The hostel is in an mixed emigrant and colorful part of the city. It is close to restaurants and cafes and is walking distance to the center of the city and the water. Just what the doctor ordered!

I suggest this adult B&B to everyone with a budget in mind. Located in a central area behind a beautiful historic Church, there are metro stations Intendente and Anjos minutes away. Great and affordable restaurants are nearby. The famous Tram28 cart of 1873 era stops very near as well.
We had a lovely experience and will return to the charming Dr.Antonio Macedo who went out of his way to accomodate our every need. Muito Obrigado!

I needed to make a very-last minute reservation in Lisbon when my airbnb host did not show up, and came across the Macedo online. I quickly received a response and made my way to the property. Check-in was quick and the staff both then and afterwards were warm and very helpful with information about the property and any questions I had about the neighborhood and transportation within Lisbon. Both my room and all shared spaces (bathrooms, kitchen, and large patio) were exceptionally clean. I was very pleasantly surprised by my experience, and would have extended my stay if they had additional nights.

This is more like a hostel as opposed to a B&B. It wasn't clearly stated that it was a shared bathroom. The breakfast was literally bread in a bread bin. On the second night, the taxi driver told us to be safe as the area where the hotel is located is dangerous. Nevertheless, the place was clean and close to the city centre. For the price of the hotel especially given that it is located in Lisbon city centre, you could expect much more.

Guest house with shared bathroom in Lisbon

Family Macedo Self Catering Guest House is owned and operated by a personable and multi-lingual lawyer, Antonio Macedo. He or his employee Sabina check you in efficiently and provide you with all the info you need about the house and the neighborhood (15-minute walk to downtown or take convenient subway station around the corner a few blocks away. Ask for an interior room as there are some sociable locals who congregate at the store across the street at night and are very loud. The street-front rooms are lovely but you will need to keep the double-paned French windows closed at night causing you to miss the refreshing breeze. (only one night in June I needed to turn on the A/C) The guests I met in the communal dining area were friendly and fun to chat with and most spoke English or tried to if I did not know their language. I especially liked the antique furniture and wood floors of this guest house. Go to Cevejeria Ramiro (famous seafood restaurant) within walking distance and have incredible seafood and beer.

Good Value Room, Very Close to Metro Station

I stayed from Monday afternoon (15/5) until Friday morning (19/5) and had a very enjoyable stay in a self-caterting room , which was only a few minutes walk from the Intende Metro station and within easy walking distance of the city centre.

Antonio, the proprietor, set the tone of my stay with a personal briefing, shortly after my arrival, in which he drew on a map places of likely interest to me and warned me to be careful about pickpockets especially on the Metro and trams.

My room was large , with antique furniture, and led directly onto a terrace with tables, chairs and potted plants. Both bathrooms on my floor provided good shower facilities. The kitchen was well provided for making breakfast with sufficient bread, teas and coffee etc. The wifi worked well

On checking out , I was able to leave two bags for collection before my evening flight and when I picked up my luggage, I was asked if I wanted to use the terrace to rest as it had been a hot day.

The hotel was easy to find and the staff was super friendly. Antonio gave plenty of information regarding where to visit and where to eat. The amenities are clean and well kept with daily housekeeping. The only downside is that there is no elevator. It would be hard for people with mobility problems to get up and down stairs.

True Lisbon experience

Short walk to metro and tram, just 3 stops from the heart of the city (practically, walking distance). The host is amazingly accommodating and can guide you to the best places you could see within your budget and time constraints. Indoor parking and church bells in the morning. 18th century building with the 18th century style (and often - origin) furniture. Spacious rooms with inherent (for the building's age) sound proofing issues. Overall staying experience matches the one you would be getting from the city.

This is budget accommodation. It's about a 20 minute walk from central attractions. I didn't feel comfortable walking late at night in this area as a female solo traveler. Possibly better for couples on a budget. Good kitchen facilities. The bathroom is really old and access can be limited in a shared environment. After my stay I relocated to a hotel more centrally for comfort but paid double the price. It depends what your budget is but I was happier with the location and facilities. The owner was very enthusiastic and willing to help.That is a positive. This place is really old, so it won't suit everybody. wi fi is good. The owner lives in the building, good if you need assistance.

Summary: I was by myself and just needed a room to overnight before catching a flight out of Lisbon the following day. Since I was alone I decided to go cheap. Well it seems you get what you pay for, or more accurately you don't get that for which you do not pay.

Even with GPS it was hard to locate the actual building. There's no real sign. When you do show up the place is locked then you have to call somebody to let you in. I stood outside for probably five minutes.
The staff was polite but seemed very overworked.

There was secured parking, fortunate because I imagine you need secured parking in that part of town. It was somewhat difficult to maneuver through their parking garage.

The rooms were old, dingy and the bedding was uncomfortable. Amenities were nonexistent. There was a shared bathroom and a shared kitchen area. I believe there was laundry facilities although I did not use them so I cannot accurately comment.

The area did not seem very inviting after dark. It is certainly not the type of place that I would want to take my friends.

However the most difficult thing was the noise. There was so much noise outside on the street that I basically didn't sleep at all.

Overall I personally would not stay here again. The price is attractive, but the downsides far exceed the value.

Clear and central hotel but more like good hostel

The hotel is good value but is more a hostel than hotel. Rooms are nice with traditional furniture. WIFI wasn't great but was free. Kitchen was nice and had free bread, tea and coffee, plus milk. The staff were very friendly and gave good advice about where to go. The hotel is very near the metro station which is excellent for getting around, it is also near tram route 28 which is a traditional tram. This is nice to get on to see Lisbon but is often crowded and even Lisbon's authorities recommend you watch your purse. Hotel was safe and staff won't be in your room unless you ask, this means you will make your bed but also means that no one else will be in there accept you. Lisbon isn't good for those with walking issues and the hotel has the same problem, no lifts, lots of stairs. Overall and good hotel just don't accept 4 star and you'll be ok.

The best thing about the place is the host, we unfortunately stayed for one night on our way back home but he give us so much insight to Lisbon and portugal that we are already planning our next trip there. Location is superb, within walking distance of almost everything. The outside might look warned out but the inside is classic and full of character. There is a kitchen on every floor for guests to use with tea and coffee already on the table. For the price I think I could not find anything better in central lisbon.

Good, not great

I enjoyed my stay here, but the hotel definitely isn't in the greatest area. I constantly felt like I was having to walk at a quicker pace in the area right outside the door. Lots of trash in front of the hotel and a few creepy guys. As for the hotel itself, my host was extremely hospitable and knowledgable about Lisbon! The room was solid, but the doors between the rooms allow for ALL sound to travel, so you don't have privacy with that regard. I heard my neighbor's alarm every morning and could hear them breathing in their sleep. Kitchen is nice if you want to make your own breakfast. I would give it a 3.5/5 but this review doesn't let me do half points.

Great and friendly

I had a great experience, stayed four nights at the hotel. The owners were very friendly, and even doubled a tour guide on one occasion. Room was very large with authentic old furniture. Would definitely come back. Downsides: as it is an old building, sound proofing is virtually non-existent.

Great Hospitaliy BUT should be adverised as Hostel

Very good location, within 15min walking distance you are downtown. Very good price and free spacious parking. Antonio the owner is amazing and provides loads of local tips and guidance. Overall it was very clean but they only offered one towel (same for body/face/hands) that was not changed during our 4d stay. Also it should have been advertised in Expedia as Hostel or at least mention that you are sharing the bathroom with others. Finally although is advertised as having breakfast dont expect any real one, there is some frozen bread in the freezer and some butter/marmalade/milk in the fridge. I guess though for the price paid it was still good value for money.

Quirky,enjoyable,full of character.

Made to feel very welcome by the owner Antonio who was very helpful.Shared kitchen and bathroom,but the way it's laid out made it feel like we had the run of the whole place.Definately not a modern penthouse,but we loved its antique charm.Very clean with nice covered smoking area on lower floor.

Noisy street (at least for the first night). Second day of my stay - I can accept that the bed was not made (I could make it myself), but nobody cared to empty the garbage bin.
Buffet breakfast? Which buffet?! Leftovers from other previous travellers that anybody could help himself/herself from the fridge. Wi-fi in the room very slow. For $30/night - acceptable. Owner (Antonio) and Sabina - very helpful and accommodating.

Excellent venue to see all attractions . Very safe. Owner is very helpful. Could do with a bit of paint but the beautiful 17/18 century furniture makes up for that. From airport 9 euro for taxi. Or easy metro ride. I requested lower floor so a bit noisy as close to kitchen and also nice but busy garden area. I stayed 10 days and felt very comfortable. Breakfast is simply bread and jam with tea or coffee. But nice area to eat if you get your own stuff in. Towels provided and lots of shampoo and toiletries around the place to use. Will definitely stay again.

Great host and a good hotel overall!

Central location but not the best of areas at night, the hotel will not be to everyone's taste as it's old, very hard to find and has no lift for the 5 levels it's got (it was a bit of a pain for us with absolutely dead feet after a full day of walking through Lisbon).

On the upside, we loved the host - he was so warm and welcoming that one would just not believe people like that are still around. He was very proactive and quickly set up some tour routes for us and provided maps and notes for Lisbon, Sintra and other worthwhile attractions en route to Porto. He was even ready to drive us around Lisbon if we got tired of walking - we did not want to bother him with this at the end but his attitude just had that something special.

There a plenty of cooking/seating down facilities with kitchens and outside terraces available to enjoy some snacks and wine in the evening if you do not fancy clubbing all night long

Very well recommended, a great experience but, perhaps, not to everyone's taste!

It was nice to stay at a local place rather than a big hotel. The parking was partof the deal and was secure (with the family's own car) and the area easy to drive to. We were welcomed and given helpful info about Lisbon and resturants.

A great experience for anyone into Antiques / Art the building is like stepping back in time. The staff friendly and helpful. Prepared own breakfast in kitchen on our floor and shared bathroom .Not great if you can not manage steep stairs in this old structure (not suitable for wheelchairs) but still a great find in downtown Lisbon.

Cheap and cheerful in good location

very good value for money, close to metro and walkable to all the main squares. I'm less than 6 foot but I was still too tall for the bed, though other than that it was comfortable. On check-in I wasn't given a code for the wifi, and when I came back to the room there was no-one to ask. The \"buffet breakfast\" was all a bit chaotic - the fridges obviously had lots of food belonging to guests, and it was almost impossible what was supposed to the breakfast for all guests.
But if you're prepared for it's foibles it's a good pace to stay

First of all we were so friendly wellcomed by a manager of hotel. Hi is an amazing person with a huge knowledge about history and city. He gave us very good tips and we always could have a chat and an advice what we can do. The room and whole house were very clean, every day was a houskeeper tided up everything. the whole house is furnished with stylish antiques and we did not feel like in the museum. was a very nice and relaxing atmosphere. the hotel location is very convienent. just 5 minut walk to metro, famous tram stop is just nearby. Fab!

Very central and good value

Staff is very lovely and helpful. Building is old and they do everything possible to make your stay as pleasant as possible. I would go back anytime.
Wifi is very slow and only works in certain sports, more router recommended to expand signal.

Housekeeping doesn't do rooms. A fresh towel everyday would be good.

The owner was super nice and helpful ! The location doesn't look like super nice area but safe with walking distance to mice central city areas and room was clean too. The only thing I dislike was the wifi access, I couldn't get any as I lived on 4th floor (lower floors maybe ok) , which was a big problem for me!

Close to metro

Senhor Macedo was a very friendly and helpful guy. He gave us all kinds of maps and directions to see places. This place is very close to the metro which made our stay very comfortable. If I could give Mr.Macedo one suggestion, it would be to include a continental breakfast. All in all it was a very pleasant stay and I would recommend highly to other people.

This is my second time to stay at Family Macedo. It is a pleasure to stay here, a very warm welcome, beautiful staff and super clean. I would not stay anywhere else in Lisbon. I look forward to my next visit here. They are extremely accommodating, Antonio is helpful to the extreme in giving lots of helpful information about Lisbon transit, places to visit, museums, beaches, restaurants, music, according to the individual tastes. I am very grateful to have found this treasure in Lisbon.

The house owner is nice, friendly and helpful. He is always there for helping tourists, give advice and guidance. The room is very clean and tidy, special and antiques decoration. I like the big courtyard and breakfast there in the morning is good. Location is convenient to metro, easy to reach. It is strongly recommended at this good condition and reasonable price to stay.

Family Macedo Lisbon

A special bed and breakfast hotel. Wonderful friendly people , antique Portuguese furnishings and within walking distance of old town. Lovely terrace to enjoy your meals and use of cooker and kitchen. We will definitely stay here again.
