The Hotel staff were very friendly on arrival, Danny made us very welcome. The room was clean, very cosy and well equipped. We enjoyed our continental breakfast with lots of choice. We also booked a meal at the Basca Indian restaurant next door on recommendation and the food was delicious! The hotel is situated right in the middle of Colchester so the shops were in easy walking distance, as was the castle and art galleries. We really enjoyed our short stay and will be back for another visit in the future!

The room has an old radiator that has been broken for months. The staff mentioned that the owner is usually available to fix it during weekdays, which means that this has been an ongoing problem that he refuses to pay to fix properly. He was not available that weekend and we were left with a shoddy portable radiator.

The staff were very helpful. The location was perfect.
The room by the courtyard garden was quite cold for a stay in January, the bed had a thin fleece blanket over the duvet, but could do with something thicker for January.
Breakfast had a brilliant selection, and the staff were very attentive.

But was a phenomenal set up anyway with loads of choice.
Room was clean, excellent shower facilities & great nights sleep. Room a little small so crowded & difficulty setting up my Laptop easily for working.

Good for walking into town centre. Within a good area for evening dining too - highly recommend Middletons. Car park secure but if you've got a wide car you might have trouble getting through the gateway. Afternoon tea is excellent and continental breakfast is very well stocked.

We loved our visit to the Colchester Boutique Hotel. It's very close to the centre of town where there are lots of places to get food and drink and do a little sightseeing.

The hotel has a quirky charm with several communal areas decorated nicely with art and antiques. We particularly liked the vintage cigarette machine. Continental breakfast was lovely with lots of options: pastries, pancakes, cereal, fruit, meat and cheese plus an added bonus of scrambled eggs made to order.

The staff were very welcoming and friendly. I'm sure one gentleman never left the place as he was always around and ready to answer questions and checking if we needed anything.

If we visit Colchester again we'll definitely stay at the Boutique Hotel.

An intriguing hotel in the town center. The hotel is full of character with rooms situated over two buildings, the main building and an out building via a seated garden area. I had a very comfortable stay in a cosy room. The General Manager, Daniel made me feel very welcome on check in and the staff are all friendly and very helpful. I was in the Bar and mentioned that my room was a bit chilly and by the time I returned a portable heater had been delivered. If you are looking for somewhere that provides comfort, a relaxed atmosphere with breakfast included and great service then this hotel is perfect. The price is nice too!

Lovely Stay in Period House

Lovely twin room with cute features in fantastic location. All staff were very friendly and the continental breakfast was delicious and ample.
Really thoughtful additions such as still and fizzy water in room. Very quiet even though located in central Colchester on a busy Friday.
The free onsite parking was a huge bonus. We were able to see our car from our room and could just walk to our celebration venue.
The manager was particularly helpful and my was great with my highly chatty daughter.
We will definitely stay here again on our next visit.

Not worth the £175 per night price!

Very noisy location due to street noise . We were kept awake until the early hours.

The room its self in general was pleasant , but lacked a few general items that would have made the stay more practical i.e no mirror near plug points , so blow drying of hair was not made easy , the roller blind in the bedroom was broken ,so obviously this wasnt checked after the previous occipation of the room...

Fabulous stay, great for a place to stay whilst visiting friends for a gathering in Peldon. Lovely hotel, wonderful presentation, personalised introduction and parking space out the back. I came back to the hotel late which was fine, although the gates were closed so I parked on the street which was fine and opposite the hotel.

The room was outside property just on the back garden where’s the way from the parking. Was very noisy and very dirty without any fresh air. There were big spiders everywhere, even when I showed them the manager didn’t do anything. When I asked for another room he told me there is not any another twin room in the hotel. So, me and my 14 years old son had to sleep with company of spiders outside the hotel.

This hotel is absolutely fantastic! I stay away with work 3 nights a week around the country. It’s a pleasure to be met by front of house who literally really cares about your stay. An absolute awesome experience compared to the hotel chains I am forced to use. Food - WOW! Tapas menu to die for.

This place is not as advertised. There was no room service as advertised and I searched for room service and was very disappointed when I arrived. And breakfast is charged extra no free. There are no new towels after the first day.
Do not stay here, avoid at all costs. The manager was very rude and wasn't very nice to my friend.

Quirky historic building perfectly located

We were in the old converted stable block, upstairs. Very steep stairs up, but a quirky room immaculately clean, with good mattress, quality cotton bedding, lovely pillows, fluffy huge towels and great shower. Room is in eves with sloping roof and it was a bit stuffy. A fan would help. Also, one side of bed had a huge bedside chest of drawers and lamp, but the other side had nothing, so only one of us could read in bed :-( Window faces outdoor drinking/smoking area, so minor smoke and chat drifts up, but it is peaceful after 9:30pm and you are shielded from road noise completely. Great free parking, and a 2 minute walk to the high street and lots of shopping and restaurants.

If you’re coming to Colchester and want to be near attractions, restaurants and pubs then this is a must. The owners are totally attentive and made us feel very welcomed. The rooms are beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean. There is air con if needed and good WiFi. A good choice of tea/coffee and biscuits. Free bottled water. Complimentary toiletries. Hair dryer and safe.
The outside space at the back is lovely to sit out in the sun. There is ample off road parking.
The breakfast included in room price had a great choice and was really good quality. There is the option of food during lunch and dinner of tapas which looked amazing though we didn’t have that. It was reasonably priced. Bar also available.
We will definitely be coming here again!

Possibly the worst \"hotel\" i've ever stayed at

The room heating did not work and was extremely cold. Had to move to an inferior room which was a lower price but no refund offered. The new room was to the front of the hotel and the road noise outside at times was extreme and after 6 am in the morning its impossible to sleep. The hotel bar and lounge was closed and apparently only opened at lunch times for passing trade and not available to guests therefore you could only sit in your room or the closed restaurant layed out for breakfast. The management was fully aware of the issues and I would suggest is quite used to complaints. At best this is a guest house and certainly not a hotel.

We booked a twin room but it was tiny and outside the hotel's main building. There was damp on the walls and the linen wasn't ironed. There were no photos of it on the website so we assumed it was like the other rooms. After complaining, we were moved to another room for no extra cost. The double room was much better.

Our second stay in this charming little hotel in an excellent position with free car park. A warm welcome from the friendly and helpful staff. Comfortable superior room well furnished and with complimentary bottled water and tea coffee and biscuits. Excellent freshly made breakfast. Staff ensure stay runs smoothly and we will certainly come again if we are in the area. Narrow entrance to car park do fold wing mirrors in!

The Blue Ivy Hotel is in a good central position.

Position of the hotel is excellent. Small hotel with good and very helpful managers. Old building with Crittal windows which made the room cold, despite radiator and air conditioning. Nice modern bathroom.
The cooked breakfast really ‘let the hotel down’. Only cooking for two people, yet scrambled eggs, mushrooms and bacon very very over cooked and the first breakfasts had to be returned as they were cold. Second was not much better. We felt that none of it was freshly cooked. Very nice coffee.

There is a room at the back of this hotel, between the main building and the 'stables' block, that is clearly a converted shed or outhouse. It sits next to a bar seating area that, when we arrived at about 5pm, had loud music playing, people sitting outside, and noise from the kitchen opposite. I was told this continues until 9pm. The room itself was water-damaged and cramped, and wasn't the twin room we paid for.

The hotel being fully booked, it's clear this is where the final 'overspill' guests are put. We were asked for, and stupidly gave, payment upfront, as we wouldn't have stayed there having seen the room. On a day when the hotel was fully booked the manager, who we found very unpleasant, had given a parking space to his friend who worked nearby; we had to wait until her shift had ended to get properly parked. Or I could have given him my car keys while we went out.

We genuinely can't account for the number of five-star reviews this hotel has received, here and elsewhere. Perhaps the other rooms really are that much better, but we're not returning to find out.

A historic house with an interesting story, my room in the stable block provided all the creature comforts with a comfortable bed and a fabulous shower. There was a spacious outdoor courtyard. I had a peaceful night’s sleep as it was very quiet.
