Basic amenities like a spare toilet roll, 1/4 of a roll left in the bathroom on arrival. The ‘double’ was two singles put together and moved apart continuously throughout the night.

Mattresses were rock hard and both got up aching from the poor bed(s)

Sadly wouldn’t return, no towels in the health club so told to take our own wet towels from the room.

Room felt like it hadn’t had a good service for a while.

Club company really not living up to expectations.

Stayed at hotel recently and unfortunately it was a very disappointing experience.

On arrival, basic amenities were missing. There was no shower gel in the shower and no hand soap in the bathroom, both containers completely empty, with the box of tissues also empty…. Nothing had been refilled. Small touches you would expect as standard, such as biscuits and hot chocolate, were also not provided…. Again was told they should have been and had not been added by house cleaning. The extra duvet for the spare bed was tiny; we asked for another, but it never arrived.

Breakfast was frustrating on both mornings. I asked specifically for runny eggs and they were hard each time. The overall food quality wasn’t great, and the service in both the bar and restaurant was very slow. To make matters worse, the hotel seemed to be completely out of bottled water. The vending machines were you could purchase bottles was also out of order.

The gym and pool were nice and probably the highlight of the stay.

Overall, very disappointing. The manager said she would be in contact following our stay, but we’ve still had no email correspondence 48 hours later. Not the level of service we expected. ⭐⭐

Don't be fooled by the reception image!! Arrived at 9.15 after being stuck on the M25 for an hour then had local road closures due to the flooding, nobodies fault but I would have thought the hotel would have been a little more welcoming given the road closures. Room was tired, noisy and on par with a poor dated Travel Lodge.

Really lovely stay. Friendly and professional at reception. Room for family for four was perfect. Facilities wise we went to the Strike Shack for the driving range and bought 50 balls to play around with which was really fun and also visited the pool twice during our stay. Great to have the family swim times as felt comfortable to be amongst other parents and young children in the pool. Overall a really lovely stay.

The room was what expected , no issue . Bathroom couldve been decorated better , paint splashes on the floor.was disappointed with the resturant ,was closing at 4 , asked for food at 14-50,only to be told. The kitchen was closed .if you clise at i still expect to get cooked food an hour early. Also no fried breakfast on our last day , as there was no one to cook supposedly , However whilst having cereal ,members of staff were coming out with bacon sandwiches. This is not acceptable ,i paid for breakfast for both days , we were not told about this . There was also no fruit or yoghurts . Even before last orders , i asked for a beer and a flat white, the member of staff ,rolled her eyes and told me whilst emptying the taps that she had turned off the coffee machine. This was before last orders. I am a guest and a paying customer ,i expect a better service and still able to get a hot drink on a freezing cold day..
However , on the positive side ,the staff were friendly ,the gym and pool were excellent . We enjoyed our stay away.it is just the little things that are important , and it left us a little disappointed

Family weekend break - Nov 25.

This is more of a sports club with rooms rather than a hotel. Our hotel room was modern and clean. Staff generally friendly and helpful. Pool and spa were very good. Golf was good but the fairways were not as good as my local courses. Racket sports and gym facilities looked great. Food quality was surprisingly good but the breakfast is totally self service and very limited.

The bar, dining area and lounge areas are a major let down. Rooms were cold and uninviting and the bar closed at 10:00pm on Saturday night !!!

Nice enough but don't go expecting Hilton and Marriott style service and facilities - The Essex could do much better.

My partner and I stayed at this hotel from the 3rd to the 4th of November. Although the staff decorated the room for an extra charge (which my boyfriend arranged for me for my birthday), the overall stay was disappointing.

We stayed in the County Suite, which was spacious, but the sleep experience was terrible. There was no air-conditioning, and the room was unbearably hot all night. The fan provided did not work, and when we tried calling reception there was no answer. The pillows and mattress were also old and very uncomfortable, leading to a restless night.

To make matters worse, when we checked out, no one asked if we enjoyed our stay — otherwise I would have provided this feedback directly. Unfortunately, we would not return. Awful stay.

Upon first arrival the hotel and room looked modern and nicely decorated. However the bed for our teenage daughter was a Z frame bed, which was uncomfortable it meant she slept on the floor! The noise from the room above, them walking about was a constant distraction due to unsubstantial insulation between floors. It sounded as if they were walking in your room. This meant we didn't have a restful night.

Stayed at the hotel as I was attending a birthday party in nearby Earls Colne. The hotel was easy to find and location to the village was excellent. Staff were so helpful from check in to check out. Was a slight issue with my room during my stay but this was sorted expeditiously by the duty manager and housekeeping. Would recommend a stay here and would certainly stay again next time I visit the area.

I enjoyed my stay at The Essex, I was a female solo traveller and stayed for 2 nights, I couldn't fault the spa facilities they were lush! The breakfast buffet was a bit small but you could order what you liked from the menu at no extra charge with plenty of options!

Unfortunately there was a problem with the electrics in my room and they had to be rebooted a couple times. The electrics had damaged my hair curling tongs. I mentioned this to the manager and she even tried fixing them which I really appreciated. When they couldn't fix them she stated they would buy me new ones as a replacement! The manager Elaine, emailed me the next day with the order number on Amazon stating they would be delivered the next day, so I am so so chuffed at the help I received from her and couldn't be more grateful I have had the curling tongs replaced. The staff also moved me rooms to another deluxe double to solve the faulty electrics. I am very happy with the staff who were lovely and really helpful.
Would really recommend this hotel.

It was a pleasant stay with clean modern room and bathroom. We were on the ground floor and was woken up at 5am with the person upstairs going to the bathroom and having a walk around on the creaky floor - not ideal when away for a relaxing break. We fell asleep again only to be woken up by golfers with noisy caddies walking right past the open bedroom window as the room window opens out onto the golf course walkway + this happened on Saturday and Sunday morning. EV charger outside kept cutting off part way through charging and only managed 11 miles of charge in 2 days.

On a more positive note, the room came with access to the swimming room, sauna and hot tub which was lovely.

Staff all very pleasant and will return (albeit in an upstairs room] if in the area again - we stayed to attend a nearby wedding at Gosfield Hall. Uber to wedding venue averaged £22 each way

We had a good stay - the pool is a welcome addition - check times families can go in so you’re not disappointed. Staff friendly and helpful. Also we didn’t realise food stopped at 8:30pm so we got a take out. Staff helpful with ordering and gave plates and cutlery etc so no problem. Fire alarm in the middle of the night so all evacuated. It was dealt with efficiently and calmly however not much communication or apologies for disruption from staff the following day. That would have been my expectation. Overall a pleasant stay in nice grounds.

Lovely Relaxing Stay!

Lovely quiet relaxing stay.
Lovely room with nice modern decor. Spa facilities great but unfortunately the pool was closed during our stay but we made use of the hot tub, sauna and steam room.
Only reason I haven't given five stars is because the pool was closed and the room (mainly bathroom) could have been slightly cleaner.

All in all, a lovely stay, great price for what you get and we will definitely return once the pool is open!

You are captive to the hotel as there is nothing else close by other than driving. This may explain the varied service level. The female staff were friendly and very helpful while the male staff were arrogant and rude. There is no AC and for some reason the room i had was so hot and the worst of all the rooms our group had. While the area is beautiful and the rooms were good - the stairwell areas had cobwebs at the windows and doors so made you wonder the cleanliness of the hotel. Struggle to say i would recommend staying here.

Overall, the hotel was lovely — clean, comfortable, and housekeeping were especially polite and helpful, even offering to assist with our bags due to the lack of a lift.

However, the experience was let down by a frosty and unwelcoming reception on arrival. We arrived early (knowing check-in wasn’t guaranteed), but the older blonde receptionist we first encountered offered no greeting, no warmth, and no alternatives. Her tone was abrupt, and we were cut off mid-sentence. A simple “Feel free to relax in the bar while you wait” would’ve made all the difference.

After speaking to other guests attending the same event — who booked for the same reason — we found we weren’t alone in that experience.

Customer service sets the tone, and sadly, it didn’t reflect the rest of the hotel’s standards.

Have seen this hotel come up a few times and thought i would try it when i was working in the area.
Being a golf club it has lots of extras, gym, spa, pool etc.
The gym was well equipped with the latest tech, the pool area was lovely with a jacuzzi ,steam and sauna room.
Clean changing rooms with ample lockers.
The room was spacious with one of the largest beds ive seen, decent amenities, tea,coffee n biscuits.
Great bathroom and shower.
The restaurant was nice, the food was decent with plenty of options and great prices.
A great place to stay and i will return.

Nice twin room, thankful to find the windows open and a fan on when we arrived. Check in was ok but no information about breakfast etc was given. Slept ok considering we were on the ground floor in the carpark with men shouting outside in the carpark, one of whom was there when we got back from a concert, sitting in the carpark just wearing underpants.

Appreciated the tea and coffee facilities but there was only one spoon, and only one sachet of hot chocolate.

Shower was nice, everything was very clean and comfortable.

Breakfast was not good at all. The menu in the room makes it look like breakfast is excellent but that's not the breakfast that's included in the room

The stay at this hotel was not great. I was very shocked by the quality of my room. The bed sheets had stains and marks on them. There was broken glass on the carpet next to the bed. There was no mini fridge in the room or air conditioning. There bathroom ceiling was disguising and had a watermarks which looks old. The smoking area of the was next to our room so we could smell the cigarettes and hear the chatting every night we stayed. The only thing that was good was the service on the golf course and the golf lounge. Everything else about the hotel was rubbish - serious review needed!

Fab place. I’ve stayed a few times and it’s always good quality.
Staff went above and beyond this visit. Gym was excellent with good quality air con.
My room was nice & comfy.
I did 3 classes during my stay, all classes were of high quality.
I had an evening meal & breakfast, again good quality. I sat out on the veranda overlooking the golf course.
I also used the sauna during my visit which was one of the hottest I’ve been in! Top notch! Well done The Essex

For a golf break it’s ideal with other facilities to enjoy. We weren’t here for golf, but just staying for a wedding. The room and bathroom looked a little tired but for just sleeping in it’s ok. My wife pulled on her side of the bed cover to get in and the bedside cabinet draw came out completely landing on her foot bruising it. The breakfast was good and staff were nice.

The property location was beautiful. Our room only had one bed in it, we had 2 adults and a child, staff did bring a fold out bed down after requesting. The bed was small, the mattress was very thin which meant you could feel the wooden slates, therefore resulted in a poor night sleep and bad back. In the bathroom there was red stains on the wall, the wash gel had nothing in. The towels had signs of staining. The bedding also had a stain. Swimming pool was good

lovely place to stay very relaxing but only thing is very busy with the golfers but that is understandable being a golfl club stunning scenery beautiful place....definitely stay again

Our stay was amazing from the first point of contact at check in to the check out. The room was fabulous with a wonderful view. All the staff went about and beyond to make our stay excellent.
