We recently stayed for an overnight at the Smiths Hotel to celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary, returning to Gretna Green where we were married 35 years ago. We were allocated one of the newly refurbished rooms at the front of the hotel, which was spotlessly clean and modern.
The lounge and bar areas are freshly decorated with plenty of seating, including outdoor seating. We would highly recommend eating at the restaurant as the food was delicious. I enjoyed the Lamb and my husband had the steak, he said it was cooked to perfection. Hats off to the chef and staff as despite a large football function and another larger table at the time we were dining it did not have an impact on the quality of food or the level of service provided by the staff. The staff are a credit to the hotel. The hotel is a few minutes walk from the Blacksmiths shop and visitor centre. The village centre is a short walk away and there is also an outlet village with shops close by. Carlisle is only about a 15min drive away. We would not hesitate to recommend Smiths hotel if you are looking for a hotel in the area.

I had a wonderful stay at Gretna Green Hotel. The staff were friendly and welcoming, the rooms were clean and comfortable, and the location was perfect for exploring the local area. The breakfast was excellent, and the overall atmosphere was warm and relaxing. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Gretna Green and would happily stay here again.

I had a very positive experience at this hotel and would definitely recommend it.
The check-in process was fast and efficient, which was greatly appreciated after a long day of traveling.
The room was impeccably clean and surprisingly spacious, offering plenty of room to relax comfortably.
Every staff member I encountered was friendly, welcoming, and helpful throughout my stay.
The complimentary breakfast was decent, nothing extraordinary, but it had a good selection and served as a solid, convenient start to the day.
Overall, it was a hassle-free, comfortable stay with excellent service. I would certainly consider staying here again!

The room & bathroom were a good standard although I found the bed too firm for me. I particularly liked the good quality toiletries. Breakfast was ok but would advise to get up early for a better choice. The first morning I ordered pancakes & bacon. The portion of pancakes was good but a very small drizzle of syrup & 1 slice of streaky bacon meant I had to supplement with honey & bacon from the buffet. We ate 1 evening meal in the hotel. Maybe it was a poor choice but 2 small lamb chops for £24.50 was disappointing. Many tables were empty on a Saturday night, although the website said fully booked and we saw 5 different staff clean the same table. The Hotel was very clean and rooms good I just felt the dining experience could be improved. The toaster needs sorting as it either leaves the bread barely toasted or burns it to a crisp. I would stay again as it was in a good location. I think other guests mentioned but there are no safes or refrigerators in the rooms. We did have a hair dryer & iron/ironing board however.

Just come back from Gretna really enjoyed our stay the staff at the Hotel were very friendly and helpful. We dined in the restaurant and the food was lovely the staff were very attentive. Breakfast was also very good with a self service menu with a good choice of hot and cold options.
We have booked to come back in July for our sons wedding so now we have experienced the hotel we are looking forward to our next stay.

Poorest ever reception,given a room that the coffee machine did not work,waited for repair for half hour,still not fixed so after a 3 hour drive to the hotel we went away for an hour to visit a well known place to see ,came back to find someone else in our room! Went reception to sort it out,were given another room that had been renovated because the original room required renovation really,after another hour or so we were offered a free pudding or starter,i thought that was a poor offer so i asked to speak to the managerr who rang the new room could be bothered to see me in person,he had no customer skills and had the audacity to offr us as teetotaller a bottle of fizz,he said if you dont drink i could give it to a friend! I mean you couldnt make this up he went on to offet a nextra couple of teabags and buscuits,i asked him to offer a main meal for w which i think was fair and reasonable in the circumstances,prior to his chat the duty manager offered the starter etc,i told the gm to forget his offer i thought he was hopeless,im sure he said he was an owner of the hotel but i found out later that a family actually owned,thereswas a lack of customer contact,couldnt wait to leave,after paying for the stay a month previously et etc etcroom

Nice hotel, walking distance to the blacksmiths and all the gift shops. The room was a little dated but very spacious and clean. I loved the little fireplace heater. The staff was excellent and I enjoyed the breakfast. The only issue I had was the lack of outlets near the bed to charge your phone. I attended a wedding at Gretna and the reception was held here, I really enjoyed the dinner!

My only issue was a terrible nights sleep due to being located just above what I think was the air conditioning so we had the constant sound of fans and drips all night. Could have complained but the kids were fast asleep and didn’t want to uproot them.

Food took a while to come out when ordered, not a lot of bar staff on so had to wait to order and get drinks, bed was pretty hard and the pillows were flat - that could be down to personal preference. Humming/buzzing intermittently in the room that we thought was aircon but wasnt, mentioned this to front desk staff.

Stayed here for 1 night in a family room. The room was very big, plenty of space. Double bed was huge but it was actually 2 singles joined together which was great. There were bunk beds located in the room for kids. Only idsue was for some reason we could not get any sound from the tv in the kids area which was annoying as they had to watch the other tv in our bed. We went elsewhere for dinner but breakfast was amazing, great choice of food and kept being repelnsihed. If your stayimg in Gretna I would definitely consider this hotel, its a few £ more than others in the area but in my opinion its worth it

Firstly the room we were given had a smart tv but didn’t work, it was two single mattresses put together badly and was not comfortable at all and the window frame was damaged meaning the window would not fully close meaning it was letting in cold air and we could hear the motorway quite loudly. We were eventually moved to another room which was smaller and had no smart tv, the place is a bit tired and service overall wasn’t great, it’s a shame as the reviews here are very good, our experience was not, also the food and drink prices are very high. They are advertising a refurbishment of the rooms, this should solve most issues.

Overall the hotel is nice, room is clean spacious and the heating works. Went for dinner and choose the festive menu. This was very reasonably priced but slow service towards the end of the meal. Breakfast had a great selection but just a bit cold.
The only negative for the service was the receptionist at check out. There was no smile or thanks. Just a 'thats you checked out', we tried to make a small joke about the refurb they have planned and said ask for plugs/usb's near the beds. She said nothing but a blank look as if to say IDGF.

The hotel room was amazing , the restaurant was awesome, only bad point was there must have been wedding party on , and there were children running in the corridors where the bedrooms are located, they were very noisy and even knocking on our room door and just causing trouble , don’t know where their parents were or even the hotel staff as the corridors had cctv they and no one came to sort the situation out, so that put a downer on our stay and upset my wife as we tried to have a nice quiet, relaxing night away for her 50th birthday

With the exception of the initial check in - I found the staff to be extremely un trained and un focused - the bar staff spoke to me as why are you stood here - when clearly I want to order a drink and food ,.

They then ALL proceeded to investigate why the coffee machine wasn’t working … I wanted a wine and the other man at the bar wanted a whisky !! So I couldn’t understand the focus on the coffee machine ..
after my meal I was asked if I wanted to see the desert menu - it never materialised so I just left ..

I over heard the breakfast staff letting another couple know the Buffett was going to close but no body bothered to speak to me !! the room was grubby - stained walls in the bath room and bedroom - the cleaner doesn’t like edges of the floor - no water in the room . The picture have been taken down and just left with screws in the wall . The room was very cold as no body had switched the radiator on ..
On numerous occasions the staff were huddled in groups and just turned their back on waiting customers - even myself .
This is the second time I have complained about a dirty room - but they didn’t seem that interested . I suppose if they fill the hotel with non returning wedding guests why would they be concerned with a single visitor who uses the hotel regularly for a global company on business - ..

You also can’t go anywhere around the hotel without the smell of weed !! The second floor stunk in the corridor -

The hotels room was a tad rundown for a 4* hotel,but is been renovated next yr but the rest of the hotel is excellent and food is gorgeous I don't like fish much but I ate fish and mussy peas for 3 nights as I've never had batter so light thin and crispy even after a dose of vinegar I don't eat chips so I asked for extra peas no problem at all. Breakfast nice too especially the poached eggs rich and creamy egg yoke,plenty to see and a half decent charger for my car too.overal I'm going to revisit after the refit next year as it's worth the 300mile round trip for 3 nights or so .staff very friendly and can't do enough for you thankyou all smiths hotel

Nice hotel, had a lovely meal in the restaurant. Room was nice but needed some attention to detail. Fire in the room wasn't working or i couldn't find the switch!
Door to the hotel corridor slammed on the second floor, so heard it every time someone used it. Some damping on the frame would solve the problem.

Very tired hotel.

There was a mix up with the room when we arrived. We ended up walking in on a room that was already occupied. We got moved to another room but the key fobs didn’t work. We eventually got it sorted out. I’ve got to say apart from the embarrassment and slight annoyance the staff at the reception were very apologetic and gave us a round of free drinks for the trouble which was a very nice gesture.
The outside of the building looks great but I thought the rooms were very tired looking and there were multiple stains on the carpet and the bathroom was very shabby.
I thought it was very over priced for the experience.

We had no cleaners apparently due to COVID to clean the rooms, the lift didn’t work for our two night stay (not good for my 87!year old father to get up/downtwo flights of stairs), there is no lighting in the rooms - all bulbs too low wattage so you can’t see to get ready and the boiler kept going out so very cold at times.

Disappointing that there was no additional measures in light of the current problems.

Hotel staff told us there were no additional measures, the hotel manager told us they had made changes but these were not evident apart from a sign saying residents only, there were still large groups, on looking at the breakfast situation we decided it was unsafe.

On safety grounds for ourselves, other guests and the hotels own staff we decided not to stay.

Excellent stay. Rooms are lovely and spacious and staff very friendly. We didnt utilise the bar/restaurant for dinner but did order room service and the food was delicous.

I have only one complaint and that is on the weeding meal we ordered the beef and it was thinly sliced beef you buy from the deli counter and not a proper beef joint.
