A welcoming stay

The Solway Lodge was a welcoming place to stay. Lovely staff, nice food and a very welcome drink after travelling down from Fife. We stopped off on our way back home. The room was huge, recently renovated, comfortable. We were able to move our car right outside our room which was fab. Thank you. We will be returning.

Motel one not environmentally friendly.

Poor eco friendly at the motel one. Paper cups the get replaced daily, no option to plug wash basin in bathroom, just have to let the water run down the plug hole. Shower screen partial so shower mat gets soaking and needed to be replaced every day.bar only sell bottled beer, thus a glass bottle used every drink.

Staff were great when you could find them. Very friendly. Very dog friendly encourage you to take dogs in the bar. Dogs get a sausage each for you to take out to them after breakfast. Food was lovely.
Bed not comfortable. We had very noisy neighbours next door carried on until early morning so didn't get much sleep.

One night in Gretna

Only stayed one night but couldnt ask for more, staff friendly, their had been a mix up with them not knowing i was taking a dog but was sorted without fuss. Comfortable bed and with smart tv in room. Ate in the bar in the eveing and food was lovely with genorous portion, breakfast really nice..and there was even a sausage brought out for the dog. Thank you

We could see the sea in the distance but over the roof of the hotel. Warm welcome. Small but comfortable room.
Bacon was too hard at breakfast. In the restaurant at night we were sat beside a deciding door with a draft and door which banged when people went through it. Told staff we needed to move and they were so helpful and moved us. There shouldn’t be a table there. Everyone was lovely and welcoming. Close to shops and town centre.

Stayed here while up on business.

Room was clean, had everything I needed, tea - coffee making facilities - biscuits - soaps - shampoos - a hairdryer.
Not the largest of rooms but more than adequate.

Staff are great - all very friendly from the time I checked in to the time I checked out, from reception to the food / bar staff.

I ate in the bar - their menu is excellent! I went for Balmoral Chicken, a winner in my eyes. (Chicken breast stuffed with freshly caught Haggis, wrapped in bacon and Peppercorn sauce.)

Bar is light and roomy, plenty of beers to choose from and of course plenty of Whisky too.

I'll be back

I have never stayed anywhere as bad.
The so called room was what looked like a converted stable. It was cold, smelly and dirty, I had to clean the toilet seat before I could use it. The carpets are filthy and the place stunk of dogs.
Sleeping was impossible due to 3 dogs in the next room, more like a kennel than a hotel.

The pub is unwelcoming and we were expected to have our evening meal next to the bar on a tiny bar table. We left and had a takeaway instead.
We didn’t go for breakfast after seeing what we did the night before so can’t comment on that.

I understand it was nye but if you are accepting guests you really should ensure you can cater for them.
I understand it is a dog friendly hotel but expecting guests to dine with dogs on the floor and sleep in poorly insulated rooms with 3 dogs in one room next door is pathetic and no excuse for the cleanliness.

An absolute horrible place and I pity anyone expecting to enjoy a wedding in this place.

Pathetic and disgusting and I don’t know how companies like Expedia can advertise places like this.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Only problems were that we had booked for four nights and requested a ground floor room. It would appear that the hotel were only given a booking for three and no request for a ground floor room. Despite this the hotel accommodated us for four nights. There seems to have been a breakdown in communication between Hotels.com and the hotel. All credit to the hotel for their hospitality. We were made very welcome by all the staff.

Our stay was short, the staff were very cheery and friendly on arrival. Made us feel welcome. we went to the outlets which was about 3-5 minutes from the hotel. We stayed there for dinner, couldn't fault the service or the meal, I had a sirlion steak and my wife had balmoral chicken. both were very nice. Breakfast next day had a choice of cereals and porridge, fruit and various fruit juices and a full scottish breakfast. service was great. The girl behind the bar was very friendly and couldn't do enough for you. If i am in the area again, I will go back to the Solway Lodge.

We stayed in the bridal suite which looked like it had been refurbished recently, both the bathroom and bedroom looked very nice, great to have a bath and shower. We ate in the bar the evening we arrived which was good and had a tasty breakfast the day after. Would happily stay, and eat here again if we are in the area.

Lovely staff but not what we expected

The staff at the hotel couldn't have been better but saying that , I was a little disappointed. The room was not in the hotel but a 'chalet type' room in the car park. The bathroom had a lovely walk in shower but was so small we could hardly get in past the door, not ideal as my husband has mobility issues. The wifi was non existent which is what happens when you have a poor signal and lots of rooms sharing the same log in. Having said that rhe meal in the dining room and the breakfast were both excellent so we did enjoy that but overall not what we were expecting as a special treat for the last night of our holiday.

We found the Manager of the establishment very unfriendly and ignorant. Didnt make us feel very welcome.
Waiting staff polite but not very helpful.
We wouldnt return again , consider this hotel for our wedding nor recommend to anyone considering staying there.

Dont expect a lot for the price

You can't expect a lot for the price and that is exactly what you get. The place is in a pretty grim setting with a view overlooking the local council estate. Our room was ok compared with the rest of our party but even this was in need of a clear spruce up. I think our stay was mostly marred by the noisy 1970's disco circa beneath our heads until about midnight when it was stopped because a major fight broke out by the partygoers who had more than a few too many bevvies.

Great place to stay. Our room was in a small block of chalets, a short distance from the main building. It was well decorated, warm, quiet and comfortable - just what we wanted after a long drive. We had an evening meal in the restaurant that had extensive and varied menu options and was excellent quality and generous portions. The room rate included a cooked breakfast also of excellent quality and generous portions. This was our first stay, but as we travel several times a year I suspect we shall be staying again in the future.

This hotel really needs some TLC.

Looks like the hotel is being run by young ladies as we only ever clapped eyes on them and no senior staff . The young ones were working their wee socks off running between reception, bar and waitressing. One young waitress soley covering a busy breakfast period .

This place is very tired and needs updating. I stayed here 4 years ago and nothing has changed. The wifi was very poor and could only be accessed in the main lobby. The expelairs from the kitchens went all night keeping us awake and meant we couldnt open the windows on a hot stuffy night. The staff were friendly and the food was good but in future I,ll be staying elsewhere.

Check in was a shambles, as no-one was around, and a mobile phone number to call was hidden amongst numerous notices on the outside door. Was made worse by a customer refusing to follow Covid rules and causing a ruckus - not the staff's fault. The mobile number needs to be more visible on the counter. The room was clean, but the furniture needs some touching up with black paint and the broken wardrobe door hinge needs more than an electric tape covering. The bathroom was fairly recently renewed, but the radiator hadn't been and was peeling / rusting badly. The temporary wood and tape in the doorway was also a let down. The towel holder had been fixed with mastic, and was coming away from the wall.
However, the bed was comfy, plenty of tea and coffee was provided, and the window opened more than the usual 3 inches (which was good on the very warm night we stayed).
Had an evening meal in the restaurant, and my husband said that the Hunter's Chicken was the best one he had ever had. My gammon was a substantial size and tasty. Prices were reasonable, but made better by the Eat Out to Help Out deal.
Breakfast was very good, and the service was speedy. As soon as we had finished the cereals, the breakfast was ready. It was a substantial traditional breakfast although the sausage did not match the quality of the rest.
With the faults mentioned, consider that the price paid was a little overpriced, but it is in a tourist area. Would stay there again, if back in that location.

I don’t travel up to Scotland very often due to work commitments but when I do we always st the solway lodge as it’s a go to hotel and honestly wouldn’t recommend staying anywhere else the staff are so friendly the hotel is always clean we would highly recommend this hotel even if just for a short stay we’ve been staying there for 6 years and nothing has changed it is a very well run hotel

We stumbled upon a real gem here

We booked at very short notice due to being delayed on long drive and simply needed somewhere to stay. When we arrived there was a warm welcome. The lady walked us to our room and made sure we had everything we needed. Breakfast was one of the best I have had recently. We stumbled across this place by accident but will definitely be returning again soon but this time on a planned trip.

We stayed overnight at the Solway Lodge on the way home from Edinburgh. Staff were extremely friendly and welcoming - could not do enough to help. Our room was in a recently refurbished annex - very clean and comfortable if a little cramped (it had a set of bunkbeds as well as a double bed, which could be crowded if a family of four were staying for any length of time, but absolutely fine for a family of three for one night). Breakfast was included in the price and was freshly cooked to order. We would be very happy to stay here again.

Stay here at least twice a year Were delighted to find this time that our usual room had had a thorough update/upgrade . Very stylish modern and comfortable One of the staff said that Rooms 1,2 and 6 in the annexe had been upgraded so far so mind and ask for them if booking!
Lovely breakfast as per usual and evening meal excellent and substantial.
This is a great hotel for a stay in Gretna.

A Gem of a place.

This is a little gem of a place. The location is ideal. Within walking distance of Gretna Shopping Village and very easy to find.
The staff are very friendly and well informed. The bar was well stocked and the food was good and reasonably priced. There is 7 chalet type rooms adjacent to the main hotel. These are newly refurbished. All very comfortable. Large TV, modern separate bathroom, all stylishly decorated. The only small problems were the rooms seem to have twin beds and the breakfast and checkout times were, in my opinion, a little early. Breakfast was from 7.30am to 9.00am, Checkout was at 10.00am, However, they were able to offer a free late checkout.
We shall be returning again, hopefully, in the near future.
