Been staying here for years - it never changes which is lovely - you know what you are getting. 5 star service, amazing food, grounds are stunning, the pool is divine and the backdrop of either the hotel behind or the golf course from the pool is equally tranquil.

The property is very nice, the pool is superb however they close it very early at 7 pm but I understand they may want to prevent noise for the tenants facing the pool. The staff in general was nice, but a few were a little annoyed by questions. You need a car I will not walk outside the property since it is a main road. They offer a shuttle to the Alvor beach ( it is a public beach) you can inquire if they offer other stops, I am sure Uber works fine too. If dinning in the property make sure to reserve in advance. Our room on the 4th floor was far from the elevator, easier to take the stairs, however our view was breathtaking looking at the golf course, pool, and far town (back of the property) it had a semi second level with a desk and balcony very nice room layout for two. The buffet breakfast was also very nice with a good selection. It was definitely a beautiful stay but I didn’t expect it to be so uptight. Close to Silves and Lagos. It is conveniently located to explore other areas.

Our 2 night stay at the Penina was the highlight of our trip to Portugal. Every member of the team were so friendly and welcoming. The room was spotlessly clean, the grounds and facilities at the pool were wonderful. The food in the Henry Cotton restaurant was excellent. We played tennis and the golf course was amazing and excellent value. We would definitely recommend and we are already planning to return to the Penina next year. Thank you Penina for a wonderful stay.

Short golfing break

We had 3 nights at Penina after a week in Vilamoura. We arrived at 1.30pm and were able to check in and use the facilities straightaway. We had a mountain facing room which was fine for a short stay. The buffet restaurant was disappointing - the Mexican food was very bland. The Italian restaurant wasn’t much better, the scallops hadn’t been seared, neither had the skin on the sea bass. The Grill restaurant was much better, with excellent service and significantly better food. The food at the Henry Cotton restaurant was good but overpriced for what was provided.
Disappointingly the beach club was not open - on the website says open April to October, but clearly this is variable!
The golf service is very efficient. We only played the resort course, but had no problems playing when we wanted.
Although check out is by midday, we were able to play golf and use the facilities in the locker room afterwards, so we didn’t leave until 4.30 pm.
Generally a comfortable hotel although a little dated. It was quite windy whilst we were there, so an indoor pool would be nice.

I’ve been to Penina for 20 plus years and love the place but it needs some serious money spent on the hotel and golf course.
Each year it deteriorates a bit more this includes the staffs as well as the hotel and golf course.
I will return but not play golf there until they get the course in better shape

History, charm and something special.

Whilst slightly dated the hotel and staff have a unique and very special charm. You can sense the unique history and how it was the place for the jet set in the late 60s'. Have returned many times for exactly that reason. Also the best hotel pool I have experienced and magnificent grounds.

Lovely hotel for golf relaxation and dinner. The two golf courses are superb, the hotel has a lovely calming and relaxing feel but is dated and lacks a bit of style.
The staff are very helpful and friendly. The main restaurant dinner is a la carte and the food is of a very high standard.
Buffet breakfast has lots of choice of hot and cold food, nespresso coffee machines in rooms and breakfast buffet.
Fantastic location and grounds. Only a short taxi ride into town or a hotel courtesy bus to the beach.

the staff at the Penina are fantastic and in my experience tried to do that little extra to make our stay memorable. The hotel is always very clean as is the pool.
The decor is a little 'dated' and would perhaps gain from freshening up but overall an enjoyable stay.

Going back again next year

We booked this hotel because it looked great but mainly because of the all inclusive kids club for my 7 year old son. Hugo and all of the staff and activities at the kids club were fantastic.Plenty of activities for the kids and a few family activities too which were great. I particularly loved family football, morning yoga and my son happily playing in the kids club so we could read a book and have a swim in peace. The kids club have a wrist band system that was perfect for us. One band meant my son couldn't leave without us signing him out and one band on the days when we were close by and he could leave by himself and come to find us. The hotel was wonderful - location, room, staff were all great. The holiday was so relaxing. We have never done this before but are booking to go back again next summer. Thank you to you all.

Golf and family hotel on private estate near Alvor

Visited in June and September. Great food with new menus in Le Grill, the Italian Arllechino, the Golfers Club and Dunas at the private beach. Great staff supplemented by trainees this summer. Well kept large outdoor pool, spa and great walks around the largest of three golf courses. Kangaroo Club for children with improved activities. Hotel now 50 year’s old and needs investment. Nevertheless a wonderful place for a golf, leisure or family holiday.

A lovely hotel,beautiful setting,with very helpful dedicated staff,and a special mention to Carlos and Pedro ! Good size rooms, great pool, breakfasts,and facilities in general. Quiet location, well away from centers but free bus to the beach. You really need a car if you want to get about the area. Couldn't comment on the golf.The food was well outside our price range at the hotel restaurants,so we eat mainly in Alvor -a 10 minutes drive away.

A warm welcome

The staff could not have been more welcoming on our arrival at the hotel, and the service overall was excellent. As always, we enjoyed the hotel's facilities especially the magnificent pool. The restaurants were great: lovely breakfast at Sagres and good choice of food and drinks at l'Arlechino, Grill and Henry Cotton's Bar. We had a very relaxing and pleasant stay.

A very unsatisfactory stay at Hotel penina

Very disappointing - we had booked for 4 nights and only stayed for 1 night - the room was allegedly with a mountain view, but strong binoculars were needed to see any mountains - we were shocked at how small the bathroom was, and using the shower & bidet had real physical issues - we were charged 5 Euros for someone to bring a bottle corkscrew to the room to open a bottle of wine - this is a hotel trading on past glories, and urgently needs room upgrading to modern standards.
We were not offered any recredit for the 4 nights accommodation we had paid for on arrival, and this is particularly galling given we moved on after 1 night, and needed to pay for a different hotel.

Pennina Hotel

Hotel is a little remote so to visit Portimao or Alvor requires transport. The Hotel is preparing for the busy period so work still needs to be done to get it to the Star Rating it has. Some areas are scruffy and require manicuring. Asked if we could have a extra 1hr to check out but this could not be accommodated. Staff were friendly and helpful. Wifi was very good. Breakfast selection was also excellent.

I thought the hotel was very good. My room was clean and maintained to a high standard. The purpose of my holiday was to play golf. The course itself is challenging with water coming into play on many holes. The greens and bunkers were in good condition but the course gets a lot of wear and tear and as a consequence the fairways were below the standard that I expected for such a prestigous course. The practice facilities are vast but the range balls are old, and again below the standard that I would expect. Visitors should also be aware of the mosquitos and take a repellent....unfortunately I didn’t. Overall I would rank the hotel as a 4 1/2 out of 5 and the golf course a 4.

Great hotel and facilities. Food for breakfast is excellent, lots of choices, plus cooked and continental, and lots of fresh fruit. Rooms very comfortable, our was maybe a little cramped, however, we were only there at night. Shower, bath etc excellent and roomy.
Husband had just one gripe, charged 12 euro for internet connection. Also we eat out in the evenings, hotel menus seemed excellent and varied, but a bit expensive for us.

A disappointing return to a Hotel I once loved

Started off with lovely she has been undated but has keeper her charm then the problems ......rooms not made up till late afternoon guests complaining as late as 5.00, twice no toilet paper, waiter using fingers to push rather expensive gilato onto scoop and at 5.00 for 2 scoop sizes differed each day. Meal Promotion 30 euro per meal only a deal in 1 restaurent other just took 30 off the bill ( no deal but guaranteed you use their restaurant). Drink poured over me by untrained waiter no apology from manager and charged for the Happy Hour drinks how rude I was soaked. Raw Duck served when sent back came back still raw ( other guest on another table suffered same) insulted to be offered Sir I will not charge you for it ( I wouldn't have paid for it) night ruined I only had a dessert should have been offered something do summing up this was a total disaster due the indifference of staff when complaining. Saw a couple from our Golf Club and they had issues. The buffet should have been refunded it was appalling. I will take this to the Owners of the Hotel.

Waiters/waitresses at breakfast could be more attentive. Could wait 5/10 minutes before being offered tea/coffee.

A few teething problems to start with but were quickly sorted. Hotel rooms are small and we would not class them as 5 star but once you forget about this the hotel is fantastic. Grounds are amazing and the pool area is perfect for little ones. Would definitely go back. It is an old school classic hotel and we loved our stay.

Great hotel with excellent facilities -- 3 golf courses, driving range, kids club, fabulous pool and great restaurants. Service has improved greatly over the last year. My family and I have visited the Penina annually for about 20 years and on our most recent trip it was back to its best. The Grill and Arlecchino restaurants were both excellent. The pool was as inviting as ever. It's a great place to relax by the pool with a book, or to play a leisurely round of golf.

The hotel was about 40 mins from Faro airport. The hotel staff were always polite and welcoming. What I hadn't realised was that the beach was not along side the hotel but instead the hotel had a shuttle bus to take you. It ran frequently and it was only a 10/15 mins drive. I didn't see any taxis at the hotel and would definately recommend any on staying here to hire a car if they plan to go out and about.

The rooms were cleaned daily, which was good. Although the hotel had tennis courts they were charging a total of €20 for use of the court and hire of equipment which I thought was ridiculous. We only had bed and breakfast and although there was a whole host of things and breakfast (which was enjoyable) €34 for a meal in the evening seemed very steep to me.

We knew there would be a fee for the golf but the price dependended on how many/long you wanted to play.

The pool was nice, clean and cold and surprisingly not that busy the handful of times we went.

All in all I enjoyed my stay there but given we did a lot of travelling, given the location in the argarve, it took us longer to get to the popular areas.

Very friendly staff with the exception of one young dark haired lad in the main bar who was rude, disinterested in his job and chewing gum in front of me. Penina has a great history but no longer 5star. Things have been done cheaply and in need of heavy investment to put quality back. Attention to detail is poor but the staff try and make up for it.

Like a time warp, in some good and not so good ways. We first stayed there 20+ years ago. Food is average ( almost feels like it was the same as 20yrs ago and food has come a long way since!) , Italian restaurant is okay....but it's about time they started using fresh not frozen veg! Pool freezing, sun beds comfy, staff very friendly and lovely. Rooms a bit dated, our first room was quite small two people couldn't walk past the end of the bed....so check first.
But very peaceful and we would return

We have stayed at this hotel for a number of years, but would never consider returning. Staff are miserable, unfriendly and facilities severely reduced. The pool is filthy; full of bugs, suncream and scum. The prices are excessive, which is why few people stay in the hotel in the evening; there is no atmosphere at all. All the traditional nuances that made this hotel stand above the others have been removed and therefore it simply is just a tired hotel in severe need of updating. We would never return.

Stayed for 3 nights on route to our destination, we had a family room with was better than expected, two normal rooms with an anointing doors so 2 large modern bathrooms two balcony a etc. The rooms were exceptional clean very comfy beds and everything you could need.
Kids club was fantastic and the large pool was brilliant fun with lots of spare sunbeds.
A very relaxed attmosphere, food and drink is priced, but we found that also in th town of alvor.
We would recommend and stay again.

Good experience although it could do with an update. For a 5* it did not offer iron and ironing board which i found odd. Lovely staff and very welcoming. Things in hotel are very pricey and will recommend going Alvor harbour where things are half the price and fresh produce. You will however not be disappointed with hotel restaurant food. Overall it was a good experience and will recommend it.

Tried to hire golf clubs for myself and my 11 year old son, after being sent to 3 different locations was told they don't have clubs for children, even though they advertise lessons at the Academy and golf club hire on their website. The tried to hire bikes, which again they advertise, only to be told they don't have bikes for children. Tried to use the football pitch for the 2 of us, to be told that it couldn't be used. They suggested we use the grass in the kids club and when I said that might be dangerous as little children running around the guest relations lady said \" that won't be a problem they will be OK.......\". Finally after 6 days of buying lunch and ice creams around the pool we were told that children eat free, no one had bothered to mention this little fact. When we tried to complain about any of the above the staff were rude, tried to complain to the general manager but he refused to speak to us. Very poor experience and they were not interested in trying to help.

Fantastic hotel - couldn't fault it!

Staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Our room wasn't ready on arrival but we were able to use the facilities. We stayed in a Junior Suite which was extremely spacious and comfortable. Our children loved the pool which was huge and never crowded. You could always get a sun bed no matter what time of day it was. The pool area was always kept clean and tidy and so was the pool. We ate at the Italian Restaurant a few times which is located near the pool area. The food was lovely and kids ate free. Which ventured into Alvor a few nights which is only a 10-15 min taxi ride. We had a fantastic family holiday and will definitely visit again. Thank you

We have stayed at Penina 7 times over the last 14 years and it is still a great experience. 5 star element is the outdoor pool and golf area. Inside needs a little TLC. Only 10 mins from private beach which is great.
Breakfast worth having and on site restaurants are great.

Lovely hotel, however

Choose a room overlooking the swimming pool as the mountain view rooms have a motorway 50 metres away, with subsequent noise. Otherwise, excellent hotel and staff

Lovely hotel with beautiful surroundings.

Majority of staff very happy and willing to help. After a shower the floor had puddles on it making it very slippy. For a 5 star hotel shocked there was no free water in the rooms and the tea/coffee did not get refilled daily. The buffet breakfast was fabulous with so much choice

5 star as 5 star used to be.

Only stayed one night but this hotel is how they all should be, the only word to describe it is \"impeccable\". Only one small criticism, the breakfast spread is fantastic but the sausages awfull.

Penina hotel and golf resort.\n

The hotel needs something for non-golfers, little to offer if you do not play golf. The Championship course is a \"minefield\" of open ditches and poor lies and needs a complete revamp. Stay at the hotel and play your golf elsewhere or just go to Quinta de Largo and enjoy the best of golf.
The hotel and rooms are fine, with the staff even better, bar and food prices on the high side of expensive, the best value is to be had in Alvor and or Portimao.

No way a 5 star

Not impressed by the standard of this hotel or the management's idea of 5 star service. In a twin room, two sachets of coffee, tea and sugar per day; extra incurs a charge of 1 euro per two sachets. No bottled water, fruit or biscuits. Spa very shabby and the floor was dirty. Dressing gown provided but no slippers. Breakfast buffet was ordinary and apart from tea or coffee Waiter service for eg poached eggs was poor. Food arrived stone cold. Lovely setting and many staff work hard. 5 mattresses for the plentiful sunbeds which caused some hassle for the staff.The grounds were beautifully kept and plenty of comfortable sitting areas.

Good hotel for many activities.

The hotel is in need of upgrading. Some rooms are very small compared to other 5* hotels we've stayed in over the years. The staff are excellent and very accommodating. Good place for golf, swimming (great pool) and the beach.

Golfing hotel close sights, drinking and eating.

On occasion during the day a tad noisy with large groups of golfers at this time year, I'm one myself, a golfer, but not on this occasion. Breakfast in the garden disappointed since staff were unawares of diners needs. Cutlery. Serviettes. Drinks? Better sit inside the restaurant where the excellent Fernando will look after you. The rooms are very clean and well stocked but storage/wardrobe space is limited. Front desk, bars etc all very well staffed and taxis at 8/9 euros to centre Alvor and its many bars and restaurants or 11 euros to the lovely Alvor beach. We'd certainly go again. And best of all, it's barely 3 1/2 kilometers, just after Portimao Airport on left, to our favourite local cafe, Taberna A Mula Cheia. Try their daily specials. The place is full of locals and discerning visitors. Closed Mondays.

Oasis of calm and tranquility. Wonderful.

The Penina is an oasis of tranquility ideal for relaxing. Alvor, a wonderfully unspoilt fishing village, with its many restaurants is a few minutes drive away and the hotels shuttle bus can take you there if you don't have a hire car. The pool area is wonderful, breakfast great. Is just special.

Delightful hotel

A really lovely stay in a well run, delightful hotel. Efficient and incredibly friendly and cheerful staff. Comfortable rooms, well kept areas throughout. A really amazing swimming pool and surrounding area. Maybe a touch stuffy here and there which might be suited to those who take their golf very seriously. We had a wonderful and relaxing stay during our five nights there and were so impressed by the cheerful and helpful attitude of staff. A special mention should be made of Gabriel who seemed to oversee the catering of all the restaurants and breakfast buffet - he was great and we wondered when he found time to sleep.
We will certainly return to this hotel - it was perfect for a great break.

Nice hotel good food

We have booked to return in October this is our second time at the Penina.
Amenities good although for 5 star hotel no water to be found anywhere in the gym. Also need more than one running machine!

Lovely stay,gorgeous pool

Just back from 4nights at penina,lovely hotel,decor is slightly dated but facilities and staff are great.hotel is about 10minute taxi drive to alvor,costs around €10,hotel do provide transport if you wish to eat in their restaurant in alvor which is good.hotel also provide regular transport to the beach although they have limited sun loungers at the beach which seem to get taken early in the day.breakfast was excellent,great choice and fresh food.gorgeous big pool although the pool bar was quite expensive.overall an enjoyable stay.

Lovely old style hotel

We have just returned from 5 lovely days at the Penina. The staff were very helpful and friendly and especially good with the children. The pool was wonderful and we didn't have a problem with the towel/card system which other reviewers have commented negatively on; we thought the system worked very well. The breakfast was varied and of a very good quality as was all of the food we ate at the hotel. If you are looking for a relaxing and quiet break in the sun this is the perfect choice. It is not a modern 5 star hotel - if you are expecting luxurious, modern surroundings in a hotel where staff outnumber guests you will be disappointed. What you will get is excellent service from attentive and personable staff, beautiful gardens, stunning pool, clean rooms with fantastic showers and a hotel which oozes history and character. A really perfect break in The Algarve.

Well equipped for those who don't want to venture

Reception staff are very helpful
Variety of options available for eating, some pricey!
Could be more facilities or evening entertainment to cater for children.
Staff in the pool bar were lazy and you tended to stand at the bar before being recognised for your order.
Have to be up early to get breakfast or you have to queue.
Quite far from the airport at Faro. Free shuttle bus to beach is a great idea but limited for times and book seats.
Only realised that they had a hair dresser and beautician on site until the last day-gutted!
Kids club is great and very secure.
Pool is very clean and the free use of towels is ideal to save on space in suitcases.
Recommend!
