Disappointing Stay at Hotel Mariem: Lack of Amenities, Restrictive Policies, and Unpleasant Staff Experience

My recent stay at Hotel Mariem was marred by various disappointments, ranging from the absence of basic amenities to encountering rude and unpleasant staff members.

The lack of essential amenities such as a kettle, iron, and slippers, both in-room and available upon request, significantly detracted from the overall comfort of the stay. Additionally, the hotel's restrictive policy prohibiting outside food and drinks left guests with limited dining options and a sense of frustration.

Adding to the dissatisfaction was the demeanor of the staff members, who were described as rude and unpleasant to interact with. This negative interaction further compounded the already disappointing experience, making the stay at Hotel Mariem less than enjoyable.

Despite potential improvements in accommodation quality, the lack of essential amenities and the presence of unfriendly staff members overshadow any positive aspects of Hotel Mariem. Prospective guests should consider these factors before booking their stay at this establishment.

The hotel facility is nice but needs upgrading. The night staff did not have access to a computer to verify the online booking.

There was a water pressure problem in the room. The bathroom sink only had a trickle of water. The shower pressure went and up and down all the time.

The bed sheets were old and stained. They were cleaned but old, overused and stained. The mattress however, was comfortable to sleep on.

I was very happy with everything from the friendly staff to the welcoming warm atmosphere. Food was beyond this world having a wide range of choices to choose from. The rooms and hotel itself was exceptionally clean and i couldnt have asked for a better stay. Seemed really nice at first (pools, hair dryer, etc), but then you start looking around and realize half the lights don’t work, there is only one outlet 6 feet up, the tub doesn’t drain and one of your windows don’t lock. We called the front desk and told them about the shower not draining. They said they would send someone, but they never did. Then we told them in person, they said someone would look at it, but I still ended up taking a shower in 6” of standing water.

fine for a quick stop over

Good location if you are wanting to be out of the main centre. A bit tired and shappby especially the rooms, with most of our group complaining they had a strong sewerage smell (although most of Morrocco does to be honest). Good reception and breakfast and pool is a nice addition although pool person didn't appear keen to let guests have sun longers. Wouldn't want to spend more than one or 2 nights here but would probably say that about most places in Marrakesh.

A load of crap

This is the worst Hotel I have ever stayed in. The rooms are very dark and uncomfortable and a real bad smell from the sewage. The AC also didn’t work. The charging sockets were loose and dangerous and had to kick them for the to work.The breakfast was also really bad.

Great way to end a trip

Good location close to many nice restaurants and inexpensive food stands that were very clean and friendly. A similar hotel in USA would cost 3 times as much so a great value. Free breakfast was omelets to order, pancakes, many fruits, many fresh pastries, fresh squeezed orange juice, several fresh salads and more. Air conditioning worked great and beds were comfy. It’s a great break from staying in a Riad where air conditioning is extremely limited or non existent and beds are beautiful but old and lumpy. Most people are happy with one or two nights in a Riad then prefer a hotel for the duration.

Dependable Hotel

Easy walking distance to a lot of places such as local restaurants, small shops, money exchange, and market. Rooms are basic and clean. The bell man was very helpful in getting a group of us a taxi. Not exactly in the center but easily walkable to Djemaa El Fna. Train station is nearby. Thank you.

Quiet Night

This hotel was clean, the spa was great, and it was conveniently located adjacent to the train station. Great deal for 45USD. The pool was cold and the breakfast was a lot of bread (typical for Moroccan breakfasts), but it was a lovely stay.

Within walking distance of train station. Also if u don't mind walking a bit you can get to other famous sites by foot. As in souks, square, Palace, tombs.
The beds were comfortable, the room amenities were a little lacking but acceptable. The breakfast buffet was good.

Pay a liutle more and choose elsewhere

Overall was a satisfactory stay, the people staff were ok'ish ( apart from the car parking attendant, tipped him 5 dirham and he thre it back in my lap) annoying thing was i asked for a safe, and they said its 20 Dihram per day, it says car parking is included in the hotel, u parking on a curve outside the hotel and 75% u never find parking and have to end up parking on opposite side and paying for car park, theres two swimming pools and they both always cold.

The showed nice photos of the rooms and enterance hall, but never showed any photos of balcony, we were staying in junior suite, and the balcony view was absloutely disgusting, there was rubbish all behind the hotel, basically it was an empty land behind the hotel with full of rubbish. Very very poor

When it came to breakfast, it was same every day, boiled eggs, crossiants, sweet crossiants, salami (very very dry) and juices and tea, very basic.

I definitely would say its more like 2-3 star hotel !

I advice people Pay a bit extra and choose else where

There are thousands of hotels in Marrakech so unless you're on a tight budget I wouldn't choose this particular hotel. There was nothing specifically wrong with it and the location was quite central but it was just very basic. At the end of the day, we got what we paid for... Not very much.

Most of the staff were rude or just indifferent, they tried to stop some of our group bringing water into our room as well. Breakfast (and from what we heard from other patrons, other meals too) was horrible we went out when we needed a decent breakfast. Rooms were nice, pool was average and the Internet connection was only available in public places and then only if there weren't too many people using it.

What you pay for

Nice friendly hotel with complimentary breakfast. Didn't receive any information when we checked in about breakfast times or wifi etc so had to ask for this. The hotel wouldn't call anyone for a taxi-instead telling us to stand on the street and wave one down which did seen a little odd. The rooms were comfortable and clean and the air con was a life saver! The pool doesn't get much sun as the buildings are quite tall so we had to rotate round quite a lot

Beware of the bathroom. Very old hotel and bathroom seems dirty. Not the best hotel, but fine for the price and good location. NO wifi in the room, which is annoying. I wouldn't really recommend it. The service is very informal and most of them don't speak english. Seems like a hotel out of the road.

Not a 4 star, hotel needs a room revamp

The location is great close to the railway station, good selection of shops and restaurants, a bit of a walk from Jama el Fana and souks but cheap enough to get a small taxi for 15+ dirhams.
Given i'm not want to complain and do believe in what you get is what you pay for, but this was a serious disappointment in comparison to the many other 4 stars I have stayed in, including in Morocco.
The bad bits this is definitely not a 4 star, gym is rubbish as is the sauna and steam room which you need to pay extra for even if you are a guest, the breakfast is extremely standard again not a 4 star, the rooms need updating there is no heating for the cold nights - im from a cold UK but it does really get cold at night in certain months, shower is bad you need to hold it and doesnt drain quick enough standing in the fallen water, flush works after pushing in the right position a few times, wifi is extremely poor and works only in the main reception if it works, overall if you want a cheap budget hotel with just a room this is the place but for what you can get by paying just a little extra i.e. a real 4 star for me it wasnt worth it and wouldnt recommend it. On a plus note it is family friendly and has 2 pools.

Room was very large and clean. Beds really comfortable. No alcohol or food from outside allowed into the hotel. Close to new town but a 40 min walk or 10 min taxi to Medina. Breakfast bland and same every day. Often not replenished. Soft drinks from hotel very pricey as were excursions offered. 4 or 5 times the price of other hotels or travel companies.

Arrived and reception staff not helpful. Hard a sick child and not concerned . First room was dark,small and filthy, sheets dirty, floor and bathroom foul.mm moved us to another 'block' bigger room non smoking but stank of smoke. Bathroom smelt sour and old. Wifi terrible, pool dark. The loungers all five of them broken , breakfast terrible, asked about safe in room , charged a daily rate to use it! No air con in reception area where you could use wifi so hot, Do not use this hotel it is not even an1 star I have stayed in better youth hostels!

Nice hotel with nice swimming pools. Good outdoor atmosphere. Walking distance to town and to the train station only a few blocks. Breakfast buffett was pretty good with lots of options, better than other hotels I stayed in. I got this room at a special price so i was pleased with the room and the breakfast. Great value even after paying the addittional taxes of about 40 durhams or about $5.

The stay was ok - ie no wow! factor
The flight was delayed so the arrival was late at night - the staff did not have a confirmed booking - money exchange was very difficult

We were only there for 1 night, it was satisfactory for what we needed. We were offered a rate reduction if we wanted a room again at the end of our holiday period. However, this was still more than a comparable hotel that was nearer to the medina!!

Passport control arrival processing extremely slow. Good exchange rate £ to MD obtained at airport before picking up Private taxi. Pick up/drop off service excellent. re: Hotel Meriem, staff helpful, room clean, fridge, tv, air con, hairdryer. Breakfast ok. Hotel prefers guests not to take food/drink in but providing you are discreet did not find this to be a problem. Two immaculately kept swim pools in garden area. Super French restaurant very nearby, called Bagatelle, food of highest quality approx MD400 - 500 for 2 people (includes wine) would highly recommend a visit. All in all a very enjoyable break with no complaints. Would definitely visit hotel again thanks to Expedia recommendation.

Looks good on paper

The Hotel was in a fairly central location but surrounding area was pretty grotty. However, did benefit from a few local shops and was easy to navigate from locale. The Hotel was a complete anomaly as the reception and public areas were sumptuous and well appointed (4/5*) yet the bedrooms were tired and in need of a thorough overhaul (2*). The Reception Area were very helpful and had Staff opening doors/carrying baggage etc but there were no maps/flyers etc and had to purchase same from a local store. Pool Area was nice with 2 x Swimming Pools (coldest outdoor pool I have ever been in), free loungers/tables etc. Poolside Bar food was excellent/good value and a better offering than the restaurant which was reasonable. After the sumptuos downstairs areas you got to the Bedrooms. Rooms had marble floors, aircon, double bed and a minibar (rusty freestanding fridge). TV had limited channels and wall was paper thin (noise really travels). The rooms were basic and functional but were a completely different quality/proposition from the rest of the hotel and despite being reasonably clean were very dusty. The Hotel was extremely good value for money and we had a good stay in the main but if the rooms were upgraded and cleaner, the Hotel would have scored significantly better

Do yourself a favour - Don't!

This hotel is stuck in a time warp. There are so may things wrong here that it seems they need to shut for a period and think about how to get them right. Admittedly, it is in a good location - in the heart of Gueliz - but they do nothing to build on that convenience. The bedrooms are drab, with the awful ill-fitting drape hanging off where it shouldn't be (a sight for sore eyes); a waste bin that rarely gets emptied; used towels that frighteningly don't get replenished, just folded over for future use; a bed that tilts dangerously if you sit at its 'foot'; an air-con unit that whirrs without fail; floors that don't get swept, and a safety-deposit unit for which you don't receive a refund at the end of the stay. I haven't got the time to mention their inedible continental offering, nor will I relive my horror when I found out that the clothes that I paid to be ironed were returned with more creases than when I handed them in. Marrakech was great; 'Hotel' Meriem has worked hard to taint my experience!

if you hate cigarette smoking, like i do, dont stay here. they gave me a \"non-smoking\" room, but there was an ashtray in it. also, they claim smoking isnt allowed in the lobby, but they allow it.

Very nice for the price!

The room is comfortable enough & reasonably clean. The air conditioning works great. Ours dripped after being on for a while, causing a huge puddle, but was worth it to be cool. The staff is competent & polite - they got us taxis when we asked & made sure we didn't overpay for them (although the restaurant they recommended was expensive).
Breakfast is carb-heavy - from what I've read in other reviews of Marrakech hotels, this is usual. There is bread, butter & jam, pancakes, hard-boiled eggs if you arrive early, small yogurts, sliced tomatoes, & olives. It would have been nice to have more protein options, but it was fine. The coffee is better than I'd expected & the orange juice is nice. By our third day, however, the bread was stale, as if they'd been using the same batch all week.
The hotel is a 20-25 minute walk to the medina. In the heat it's a bit far to walk. Luckily cabs are plentiful & affordable, but I would have rather been in a walkable neighborhood.
Free internet in the lobby is nice, although they close it after a certain hour which is inconvenient, & my friends had some problems with wifi.
The pools are great - one is surrounded by bamboo on two sides so it gets some shade, & the other in the sun for most of the day. They are kept impeccably clean, & are wonderful after a long day out. However, the hotel doesn't allow outside food or drink, & they enforce this, even with bottled water. Of course, the hotel's bottled water is ridiculously expensive.

It was a bad experience; the bathroom smells bad. The Wi-Fy does not work in the room, you have to go to the lobby to get the internet working. The AC was so bad and gives us warm ear. The shower and the bath tub is very old; when you take the shower, the shower moves left and right and drives you crazy. The water stays for a long time in the tub because the drainage was clogged. There was no customer service at all. Over all we did not like the hotel.

The Hotel Is Located Close To The Old City.

My Worst Experience With This Hotel Is The Hotel Staff The Way They Handle The Customer Very Poorly. Also I have made my payment true Expedia Wish It say in there policy all included and I was Shocked when they ask me for paying more taxes wish did not make sense in the reservation was a price of the room plus taxes wish I have paid but at reception they insisted to collect taxes wish they made me pay.
With My room Breakfast was included but the staff member the ware very mean and contently watching every person in the dinning room no peeper tissue and most of everything empty basically terrible I hope that the people in charge have to look at this matter very closely because overall it's not bad place.

a tourist factory with small rooms...

The patio with swimming pools was nice and we were not feeling like in the middle of a very busy town. We booked a room for 3 people, and it was not ready upon our arrival, the age of our daughter was specified on the reserveation, but they wanted a 6 years old to sleep in a cot...then they brought a folded bed and once it was unfolded, there was literaly no more space. I don´t know how we would have done if we had stayed there for more than a night... The bathroom was relatively outdated. The breakfast buffet was nothing special but served in a cramped restaurant...

Clean and tidy hotel with spacious rooms.

A good hotel in a nice part of the city.
The room was very spacious and even had a separate wc and shower room which is often a handy feature. The decor was a little drab and dated but the room was spacious, bright, sunny (512) and clean. The cleaning staff where also pleasant.
Breakfast was nice with good attentive service from all the staff.
There are two pools at the centre of the two blocks of the hotel and the area around them is very clean and pleasant, with a handy coffee shop serving drinks. The only downside to this area is the tall buildings on either side causing much of the area to be shaded. So if you want the best sunbathing spot visit the roof top of the building that houses the main reception area. This building also has some great rooms with balconies (534) so worth asking about before booking.
A short walk after turning right out of the hotel you will reach a good area for restaurants, try Pizzeria Le Colisee as its very pleasant, staff are great and the prices are excellent.
The hotel is a good 30 minutes walk from the main square Djemma El-Fna but taxis are plentiful if you don't want to walk.
Overall this is a nice hotel away from the main tourists sites but this allows for a different perspective and it is not too far from those sites to be an issue.

good but not brilliant

hotel is centrally located and literally across the road to the main station (Gare de Marrakech). i didnt have breakfast or dinner at the hotel but i sneaked a little peak in the dining room and the food look quite nice. there are 2 good size swimming pools and the lobby area is very large. i was a bit disaapointed at the condition of the rooms. they looked a bit dated and could do with a refurb and not to 4* standard. having said that, the room was clean. my room had a A/C condenser unit on the outside of my window and its constant 'hummimg' was not appreciated. staff were pleasent and friendly. i may stay here again if i dont find cheaper elsewhere.

Unassuming hotel that offers great value

An excellent night's sleep in this pleasant hotel where I spent one night after travelling from the north. There are more exciting hotels to be found in the city but this ticked all the boxes for me just before flying home.

There are two outdoor pools in the little garden, the larger of which is flanked by an impressive line of bamboo that will provide much needed shade in the warmer seasons.

The breakfast room was a little chaotic as half the world descended on it at the same time, but the staff are first class - infinitely patient and friendly.

Generous sized bedroom that was warm and comfortable - much appreciated after a very wet afternoon and a cooler than anticipated evening.

Disappointed majorly

The hotel is run down and needs renovation, although the lobby looks very good. The room had old beddings and the towels were torn and discolored due to excessive use. Breakfast was very limited. The service overall was really disappointing for a so called 4-star hotel.

Good value for money

Hotel location was very good and near to “Place du 16 Novembre” shopping area. Note that “Place Jemaa El Fna” is approximately 45min away on foot however buses are plentiful and very inexpensive. Breakfast buffet was of a good standard and staff in this area of the hotel were friendly, as were service staff. Staff on main reception not so welcoming or helpful however it was not enough to spoil my stay. Hotel furnishings of a reasonable standard and in keeping with what I would expect of a 4-star hotel in North Africa. In summary, the hotel was good value for what I paid and I would go back.

Great stay, would return

Hotel Meryem popped up on the Hotels mobile app and it looked like it was in a good location with a great price. I was pretty astounded at everything included in the grounds, including all-night reception, swimming pool, and huge breakfast buffet included, all in addition to a fantastic and comfortable room. Although I only booked one night here, the following night I also needed a place to stay and decided to return even though a slightly cheaper place came up in my results. Would definitely stay here yet again.

Very efficient and knowledgable and helpful staff at registration however food was barely passable. There is SUCH good food inMarrakech it is inexcuseble to not offer mint tea at breakfast. I would recommend this hotel size of rooms was good too.

Nice 4* hotel

Nice 4* hotel on a not very nice street (but safe during the daytime). However, it is very close to the train station (less than 5 min walk) and 30 min walk to the medina or to the Majorelle gardens (or public transport also available nearby). The room was very modern, spacious and clean. Good internet connection, nice flat screen satellite TV, working small refrigerator in room, balcony and functioning air conditioning- all good features of the hotel. There are 2 very nice pools between the buildings. The buffet breakfast was also good. Price quality ratio is very good- would stay again if I went to Marrakech again!

Hotel was clean and comfortable. The wifi is only available in reception which is inconvinient. The breakfast was not like the pictures on here there was not one piece of fruit it was mostly bread, jams and cereal. Its a 5minute walk to the new town main road and 10min taxi to main square. Spa service are basic and expensive. We only stayed for one night hotel was fine but does not offer a moroccan themed stay.

I picked this hotel because of the low price for a four star hotel and because it supposedly had a fitness center. Well, there was a small room with a out-of-order treadmill and a crosstrainer. Pool is unheated so in April the water was ice cold. TV had very few channels. Internet worked most of the time. Breakfast was acceptable although it had nothing fresh aside from sliced tomatoes. Breakfast ended at 9:30am, which might be standard in Marrakech, but to me it felt really early.

Really near the train station

Very good location to train travellers, good quality hotel, corteous staff, nice pools, no noises from the street. I just didn't like, as a not early sleeper, of the breakfast's milk and coffee be cold in the end of scheduled time for that meal, the early noises of dragging bed along for cleaning in other rooms near, and the internet connection of the hotel computers falling every 10 or 15 minutes during the day. The front desk also doesn't help much in information with maps like it happens in other hotels.

Not worth the money.

Me and my husband spent 2 nights in 2 different rooms. The first room was ok, nothing great but we were only there for one night. The second night we got a room where the toilet was literally touching the toilet door so there was no room to even sit down! The room was dirty and the towels had black bits. I would not give this hotel more than a 2 star rating, no idea why it's classed as a 4 star hotel!

We stayed here for four nights and it was perfect. Very clean and close to the New Town. the breakfast was sufficient and it was away from all the hustle and bustle. I would defaintely recommend it

OK, but can be better.

It was slight disappointment to a 4* hotel, it is more of 2 or 3* hotel by UK standard, however it is clean and the staff are quite helpful. It is perhaps a last resort if you are expecting to be 4 star hotel, and is worth paying a bit more to get a better equipped hotel.

Meryem Hotel - very good for the train station

The hotel offers far beyond the very modest price I paid for my double room. Friendly reception staff, a plush reception area, outdoor swimming pools, a very large room with AC and a great bathroom. It's very close to the train station so it's perfect for anyone travelling into or out of Marrakech by train (as we did, overnight from Tangier). It is a little distant from the main tourist (i.e. market) area, but we either walked to/from there in around 30 mins - useful after a heavy meal, or used taxis. Reasonable buffet style breakfast too. I'd recommend this hotel.

Someone's dirty pants??

Not much more needed to be said other than the service was terrible and the bathroom smelt of urine. Also the pool only gets the sun for about 4 hours in the day and you will be luck to get into it due to everyone piled it this small are of light.

good hotel

hotel staff was very helpfull. good hotel would recommend for budget travellers. Swimming pool was clean and a decent size, we went during a period when the hotel was not so busy therefore plenty of space to lounge around the pool area but could be different if you go go when busy. breakfast is boring and the same everyday but cant complain for the price of hotel. Local area is good with plenty of places to eat for all budgets.

Good for the Price

The hotel is at a great location, the customer service is excellent especialy a young lady named Hasna at the recepetion. The food is good althought one can do with more variety rather then having similar menu. Overall I would recomend this hotel to anyone looking for a clean quite upmarket central Hotel.

Hotel has two buildings. The old building is not that comfortable as the new one. So ask for a room in the new building for your stay.

The hotel was really cheap and well worth every penny. Situated in the new city It was a 20 minute walk from the Medina and the souks. The staff were really friendly and happy to help.
