We were a late booking. The hotel upgraded us free of charge as they could not accommodate us closely otherwise as a family.

Rooms dated but front of house excellent. Breakfast was first class. £36 for a family of 5. Kids loved the waffle and automatic pancake maker. They accommodated for my wife who is caeliac immediately when informed. We would stay again. Great staff

Nice enough, very average. Is a bit tired decor and could do with a refresh, but that didnt really bother me - it was also cheap. Only minor issue was it happened to be 30 degrees in Essen and the hotel doesnt have air conditioning, so it was a bit warm overnight.

Facility does not have AC in all rooms and no restaurant although it advertises it does. Carpets are dirty and stained, curtains ripped. Towels extremely small and thin.
They kept on lying saying restaurant will open the following day but never did and also lied about central AC which they don’t have.
Bathroom and room smelled bad and floor in bathroom still showed iron stained from prior guest. Simply disgusting.

Arrived by car to find parking area was closed due to building work, no mention of this on website during booking, parking was one of the main reasons I chose this hotel ,very difficult to find a park, receptionist Eda was rude and patronising, our room was fine but had a loose toilet seat and bed was only prepared for one person not 2, Roberto in the lounge bar was very nice and the bruschetta was very tasty, breakfast was excellent but hotel was overpriced at almost 150 euro per night.

Terrible night at ESSEN.

The heating on the room was to intense (in all hotel actually). Even shutting the termostat there was still hot air incoming. I asked the reception to fixe it but they couldn't. I had to sleep with an open window earing the trafic. There was a water escape from the WC. A waste (and a noisy one). To expensive and unconfortable.

We stayed here for the second time and everything is going worse this year : water temperature in the shower is unstable, towels are so worn so they have holes, walls are dirty, desinfection odor everywhere is terrible.

So we won't come back.

Hotel instead was fine and the breakfast was a splendid choice of dishes.

Room was large albeit slightly dated but in general was very clean and comfortable.

Very passive / cold staff. One day I stayed out all day since early in the morning till late at night for business and when I got back, the room was messed up. It seems they started to clean and not finished... I really was not in the mood to that after a tiering day. I called reception all they could say that they were sorry and that they would say it to the manager. That night I had to recollect all the mess in order to take a shower and go to sleep in the bad. The manager did nothing to at least express himself the day after... like nothing happened. No Air conditioning in the room... in order to have some air, you need to keep windows opened... and all the street sounds get into the room... For sure is not the Holiday Inn I know around the world... and I will not book it again.

Decor is hideous. I'm guessing the hotel was built in the late 70's early 80's and they've not spent a cent on it since. It's depressing.
There are many better choices available in Essen.

Hotel was pretty expensive, although we did go during a large show (Spieletage).

Cons:
Room was pretty hot and had no aircon (despite being told it was included).
Room very noisy on front side of hotel - window seals were a bit perished, letting in lots of road noise.
Wifi was awful, very slow and frequent drop outs.
Bar prices extremely high (€3 soft drink), as was the price of breakfast (€20).
Car park spaces quite tight.

Positive:
Staff excellent and more than happy to help.
Location good, near to the u-bahn and Essen town center.
Room very clean and tidy each day - bathroom spotless.

Overall; it was a positive stay, with excellent staff, but could have been cheaper (and I'd complain less) or the stuff around the edges improved for the price.

This is a very, very nice hotel near the center of town. We were there on a weekend night while visiting friends so we didn't use the bar or restaurant but it certainly looked good. We easily found street parking so we did not pay the hotel charge of 14 Euros. Breakfast was not included. In room wifi worked fine. The room was comfortable, ample in size and everything worked well. There was a fridge. There was a short drive to DUS airport. If the location works for you I would suggest this as a good value and a pleasant place.

Well situated for city centre, large 4 floor shopping center. About 5 mins by car, 10euros by taxi to Messe Essen. Cheaper if you go by subway. Parking underground @ 14 euros per 24hrs. Overall good hotel. We had a two room \"suite\" for two of us but didn't enjoy the tired sofa bed arrangement as the second bed. Had booked a twin room so can't complain.

Good Hotel for events at Messe Essen

I reserved 3 rooms for this stay connected to the IPM Messe Essen. The hotel location is great for commuting via U11 to the Messe and everything was good except the Wi-Fi in the rooms was completely unstable and would disconnect every minute or so. Sitting in the lobby/bar the Wi-Fi was very strong but that was not very convenient.

Good restaurant not so good beds.

The stay was very good. We enjoyed the restaurant which was mainly buffet service our son ate for free. The only slight downside was that we had to park behind in the cinema carpark because their one was full, however it was much cheaper 3.5 euros for 24hrs as opposed to 14 euros for 24hrs for the hotel. The pillows had been washed so many times they had collapsed and the towels were not completely clean, but we are very picky.

This hotel does not have air conditioning and the rooms at front of the hotel are extremely noisy due to the fact that the road below is used as a race track by the locals, so forget opening the window to get some fresh air, as you won't sleep!

Hotel is close to the heart of the city,. Rooms are generous in size but the bedding was miserable - lumps of cotton in the pillows. bathrooms are a bit dated shower stall is like from the 80's.
Very nice breakfast, helpful staff.
I think with updated pillows it would be a very good deal for the price.

Ensure you request a room with air conditioning as the first night there were no rooms available with air con and very little sleep was had as room was too hot and noise from surrounding area was audible with windows open.

Barebones hotel in the center of Essen

I spent 8 days at the Holiday Inn City Center in Essen. Hotel was pretty clean though not spectactular. No A/C in room, city noises were very loud and being across the street from a parking garage that was lit up all night made it tough to sleep. As an english speaker only having two channels out of 50+ on the TV in english made for a long week. Internet was super slow, even for hotel standards. Couldn't get into my work's VPN due to horrible upload speed. Did have WiFi which was nice though.

A hotel that is truly stuck in the 1980's, rather like spending the night in a hospital or similar institution!! Extremely functional & completely unappealling........absolutely no atmosphere or ambience whatsoever. Certainly a rip off at more than £!30 per night.

Great Hotel for the Price

I did not expect much, but this hotel was just the right amount of luxury for the price. The rooms were so spacious - suite like. The dining room was excellent for breakfast and dinner (actually on the higher end of food). The only complaint I had was that they did not turn on the air conditioning during our visit. This was minor as it only got up to 80s, but It could have helped during the early afternoon hours.

Decent Choice in Essen

Stayed here as booked too late for a Trade Show in Cologne, and price was reasonable. Pros - clean, reliable, English-speaking, wired free internet access, good breakfast, numerous dining and shopping options within 5 mins walk even in winter as it is close to a Mall. There are several direct trains from the Hbf to the Trade Show station in Essen with no changes/stops which makes it convenient. Cons are distance from the Hbf and Main Train Station, although you can take a local train to the Hbf from the nearby Mall above or a Taxi for about 6 Euros one way.

I've stayed here on business a few times and it's always been reliable. Good sized clean rooms with free wi-fi and free wired Internet access. Yes, it's free even though the Hotels.com web site says it's 5 Euros per day! Sometimes the wi-fi can be a bit flaky and there have been times when I can't connect in the room, but usually good. Decent breakfast selection. The restaurant is ok, but quite a limited choice of food although good quality. It's usually very quiet in the restaurant during the week but you can get food in the bar where there is usually a little more atmosphere. There is a fitness room but you have to ask at reception to gain access to this and I have never bothered and can't comment on it. If you like shopping there is a big shopping centre a short walk from the hotel. There's also an IKEA and a big cinema, but almost all English language films are dubbed into German (like most cinemas in Germany) so no good if you don't speak the language. The hotel staff speak excellent English and are always courteous.

Das Zimmer ist in die Jahre gekommen und super sauber war es nicht. Der Teppichboden im Zimmer hatte einige Flecken. Und auch die Dusche hätte sauberer sein können. Mit so einem tollen, leckeren, frischen Frühstücke hatten wir nicht gerechnet. Die Kinder waren begeistert von dem frischem Lachs, Pancake und Waffeln. Mitarbeiter waren freundlich und haben immer alles wieder nachgefüllt.

Etwas alt und in die Jahre gekommen, allerdings Modernisierung/ Renovierung ab Mai bereits angekündigt. Sauber, freundlich und geräumig. Das Bett war etwas weich und nicht perfekt, ansonsten das Zimmer aber top. Ein Highlight war definitiv das Frühstücksbuffet mit viel Auswahl, welches liebevoll bis elegant angerichtet war und sehr aufmerksamen Mitarbeitern, die ständig alles kontrolliert und aufgefüllt haben.

Our room was next to a door that split the hallway. This door made a lot of noise when it closed. We were woken up multiple times in the night because of people opening and closing the door. Needs something so that the door closes more slowly/quietly. Windows weren't well insulated so lot of noise from outside as well. Breakfast area was not big enough for the amount of people. Was chaotic. Would not stay here again.

Essen Motorshow på 20ende året.

I forbindelse med Essen Motorshow som vi har vært på de siste 20 årene så har Holiday Inn vært det foretrukne hotell.

Men lite har endret seg på disse årene og det begynner dessverre å bli litt slitt.

Men rommene er store og helt greie.
Frokosten er litt dyr i forhold til hva man får, men den er midt på treet.

Service fra betjeningen er topp og ligger fint plassert midt i sentrum av Essen.
