Very friendly, helpful staff. Breakfast was good although of the two days I had breakfast I was only asked once for my room number to confirm I'd paid for it. I could have had it for free on the first day. I liked the option of getting a voucher at the bar if I opted not to have my room cleaned. About a 10 min walk to the university and about 15 mins from the station so a good location for me. I would certainly return here when visiting Essen again.

Unsatisfied appealing experience

For starters, this hotel is overpriced, outdated, and unappealing to the eye. My room was right at the Main Street so we heard ambulance and traffic throughout the night. It smelled old as if years ago it was a smokers room. The beds are hard and the sofa sleeper is a hazard for children. The furniture and television are outdated and the bathroom had a window that looks into the bedroom hall and though clean, it was also outdated. The pictures on hotels.com did not match what I got. Though there was parking, it was very tight to maneuver but doable. Our room was also right by the elevator so we heard people come and go. For the money we paid, I am dissatisfied with the appearance and quality of my stay. I have stayed in better for less which made my expectations high for the Marriott. Had I saw the updated photos on hotels.com and the prices matched that value, I would have no complaints but this is total opposite. If I could have cancelled my room without penalty, I would have. I expected more from hotels.com and will be cautious to book on the site again.

Nice hotel conveniently situated 2 mins walk from Viehofer Platz tram stop. The main railway station is 2 tram stops or about a 15 min walk. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Rooms are well decorated, clean and comfortable. AC is available and the windows also open wide for fresh air if required. Breakfast buffet had a great selection of food, one of the best I’ve seen for a buffet breakfast.

Everything was just perfect. When I reached the hotel I was dead tiered, when I got into the room it was so cozy, so comfortable, and calm, it was just perfect, I slept like a baby. Kind and professional staff, hotel is clean, nothing to complain about. There are busses and metro station near by.
I totally recommend this hotel.

This is a nice hotel on a main arterial so easy for bus and taxi service. We found a nice little restaurant around the corner - Panoptikum Gaststätten GmbH - which made our stay that much better since the hotel restaurant is not open every night. Breakfast is expensive at the hotel if you don't book it with your room. Shopping is very close and it's easy to walk up to the platz in central Essen, quite convenient.

A good choice for Essen spiel

Stay here for Essen Spiel 2018.
Hotel is located right next to underground tram station, with several lines passing through, so no trouble getting a tram from main station (Essen Hbf every 5-10min) although it is possible to walk from there also. Check-in was quick and easy.
Found that the room i was given did not have a mini fridge (there was an empty space where it should be). After speaking with reception, the staff were able to accommodate me in another room (without a bathtub though), so that was good (i preferred the fridge to a bath).

About the room, it is a good size and clean, the bed is comfortable and there is room to sit and use a laptop. The windows do a good job of blocking the noise of the traffic (hotel next to a main road).

WiFi is free and fast, but had trouble with stability (internet sometimes just stops for 4-5mins) and the Netflix streaming service (doesn't load content home page) - reception says it is not a problem on their side, but if i share internet from my phone, Netflix works perfect. I believe they are blocking certain communication that Netflix relies on. All other sites (youtube, facebook etc) work fine on the hotel WiFi, so there is something going on between Netflix and the WiFi

Hotel staff was very polite, room very clean an breakfast was good. At the period when I stayed there were issues with internet - it was very slow (not even possible to talk through skype) and paid wifi was even slower than free internet. Local area was not very clean and location of hotel is 10 min walk from old town center. Hotel is very good option for persons who are travelling by car, because the building next to hotel is multi story parking lot.

_Conscientious staff.

- Comfortable lobby level bar with large outdoor terrace.
- Quiet, clean room with large bed.
- Breakfast too expensive to take advantage of but cafes near the Rathaus shopping center and pedestrian zone are within walking distance.
- Room cleaned every day.

Just a short bus ride away from the nearby Unesco World Heritage Site. Close to supermarkets, cafes and the city centre. Just 10 minutes walk from the station.

Only issues was that coffee wasn't available in our room however the machine in reception was out of action during our visit.

A welcome stay in Essen

The overall experience was good and the Hotel is well located for the Underground railway system, not far from the shops etc. I enjoyed the efficient buffet breakfast service. On the negative side a large number of the rooms (I guess half) face the busy road and the sound-proofing is insufficient so there is quite a lot of road noise even with the Windows shut. Also I was in Essen for Spiel '15 and I was surprised to learn the Hotel does not set aside space for board-gamers in the evening. Almost every other hotel in central Essen provides space for this.

It was a very welcoming hotel. We came with our dog and the facilities were excellent, including excellent parking . Two disappointments were the fact that the night were stayed there, the restaurant was closed for a business meeting (how nice if we had been informed when booking) and the fact that in the bedroom the beds had only one pillow. Had I remembered when I read he reviews I would have noted this as a complaint a couple of times and still nothing has been done about it. Pity. The reception staff were very helpful in finding us an alternative dog friendly restaurant only a short distance away, but as it was pouring with rain, we had to have a taxi there which added to the cost. Despite this I would go there again (with extra pillow in my luggage).

Good hotel but could do better

Nice hotel. Restaurant limited and pricey in our opinion. No kettle and only one inferior pillow each. Was disappointed only 2 english speaking tv channels (both news channels). Wasnt even a music video channel. Local area not great although nearest station just 2 mins away. 20 mins walk to main shopping areas

Good location city center and Colosseum Theater

We just needed a hotel for one night, as we'd tickets for a performance at the Colosseum Theater and didn't want to drive back to The Netherlands late at night. The hotel is about an almost straight 20 min walk from the theater. As we considered the hotel's parking garage too expensive, we parked our car at the car park next to the theater.
The hotel is located at the edge of the old city center, doesn't look too appealing from the outside, but is well done inside. L-shaped reception desk could be somewhat larger and huge pillar in front of it is blocking the sight (desk clerk can't see you and v.v.). Our spacious rooms were on the fifth floor. (bath)rooms were clean and looked brand new. There was a coffee maker (no tea?!). One of the rooms didn't have curtains, but folding curtains instead. This should be changed, as daylight can enter easily (in particular during summer time). Matrasses were a bit on the soft side to our taste: comfortable when laying still in bed, but annoying when my partner turned in his sleep and the matrass became 'like a wave'. We didn't use the breakfast at the hotel, as we considered it far too expensive (EUR 21.50 on Sundays). Overall, a convenient stay.

Despite stating up front that I had a 2m high van with a disabled badge nothing was arranged and I was told on arrival the hotel had nowhere for me to park as their car park is only 1.9m high. I had to leave my wife in reception then drive around the locality looking for street parking and ended up half a mile away.

I was looking for a hotel on my holiday travel for night over sleep where I can park my car safely and have a nice sleep. That's what Welcome Hotel did offer - double gate secured parking and comfortable, clean rooms with blackout curtains that let's you sleep well.

Lovely hotel in maybe not the most lovely area.

I used the Wecome Hotel as a base while visiting the Essen spiel (Board gaming trade fair) and although it was somewhat off the beaten trail, it suited my needs very well.
The staff were almost all very helpful and friendly apart from one barman who displayed some of the worst customer service I have ever witnessed (ignoring customers to chat to a young lady, which would be annoying in a backstreet bar but was unacceptable in a 4 star hotel).

My only slight quibble with the rooms was the one, extremely soft pillow that gave my head no support at all. Other than that, the rooms were very nice indeed.

As I said, the area isn't the nicest part of Essen by a long stretch but the transport links were excellent with the Tram station just a few yards away.

The food was excellent with the breakfast being particularly good.

All in all, I'm very happy with my stay.

All I was looking for was a nice place to sleep at a reasonable price. That's exactly what I got and more.
Staff are welcoming and polite. The room is very clean and comfy with great aircon.
I was a little disappointed that breakfast was extra at €17.
Overall a nice stay at essen.

Disappointing. Although I booked well in advance and requested a non-smoking room, I was assigned a smoking room, and there was no other available. My two colleagues had booked after me, but were assigned non-smoking rooms. The wi-fi was absolutely hopeless and it was impossible to make any internet connection. The staff were very helpful at breakfast (plenty of them) but checkout was a nightmare with two poor overworked girls and a man hanging about doing nothing.

Centrally located business hotel

This is a basic business traveler hotel and is well situated in central Essen. Breakfast is expensive (as it is in most European hotels). The hotel is more geared to the male business traveler, than female business traveler. There is a grocery store about 2 blocks away and it is an easy 5-10 minute walk to the central shopping area.

Hotel good - only problem is pulling up outside to load/unload. There is only room for 3 cars outside at side of busy dual carriageway and while we were there a tour bus was parked across all 3 spaces. We had to remove top box as no high vehicle parking available (unless you have a tour bus) so had to pull onto pavement and hope no police around.
