Hotel is on a perfect location with easy access and loads of food/drink options around.
Pros: Breakfast, location, spacious room
Cons: Bartender (old tall man) from the hotel bar was extremely rude and shouting at guests once he couldn't handle couple of drink orders. Really shocking behavior and apparently he is well known for it as we did feedback that on the check-out and got told by the reception that \"he can sometimes be like that\"

Bad and confusing Reservation system

My confirmation was not found at Check-In, even giving your staff my reservation.
After going into other system they found it but price without Breakfast, but in your confirmation in the e-mail showed room+bfst included.Since it was cleared, the staff assured me that all will be OK with rgd to bfst. Upon checking-out, I was again asked to pay for Bfst. I protestd and agn showed your staff the e-mail confirmation.

I was very pleased with the hotel. I was attending the Eras Tour concert in the nearby Gelsenkirchen and this hotel, located right by the Essen Hbf provided convenient accommodation for me after the concert.

The room was spacious and had all the necessary amenities. Most importantly, there is air-conditioning, which is a rare find in Europe. I was glad I picked this hotel as during my stay the weather was quite hot.

The breakfast was extraordinary with bread, fruits, cereals, eggs and sausages as well as all kinds of beverages. You can also get a great view of the street if you sit by the window.

Overall, I highly recommend this hotel for its location and rooms quality.

Perfect for a Veltins Arena concert

Perfect for a concert at Veltins Arena. The hotel is directly across the street from the train station- 10 minutes by train to GelsenKirchen, then a tram goes directly to the stadium. In Essen- there is a pedestrian area with shopping & restaurants just around the corner. The hotel was clean, rooms were comfortable, breakfast was great, staff were friendly. My only complaint was our room was in the part of the hotel that used to be the smoking section & it still smelled a little like smoke. Not enough to be a problem for us, but if you’re sensitive- be sure to request a room that was not a smoking room at one time.

We had a wonderful two night stay. I was traveling my 12 year old daughter and it could not have been more conveniently located. Directly opposite the main station in Essen. Located in a lovely restaurants and shopping area. Rooms was modern, spacious, and super clean. Felt very safe.

You're not coming to Essen for the culture or scenery (or if you are then you've got different tastes to me) but for the Messe conference centre this is perfect. It's clean, comfortable and the staff are very professional. Got a nice bar, and the breakfast is good. I've stayed here 10 times and will definitely return - highly recommended.

In fact, I extended an extra night with front desk staff, Sevinc, who helped me not only get the best rate possible, but keep me in the same room!

Another Overnight stop while travelling by Train

Excellent hotel and value for money for what I paid.

Located right across from the Hauptbahnhof but no noise or other disturbance. Room was very big, comfortable bed, all I needed and, best of all after seven weeks of inter rail, a nice big bath.

Similarly, as mentioned to the helpful, friendly receptionist, this was the best breakfast of my travels.

Didn't have much time to explore but the hotel is also close to the shopping and restaurant area. I had the misfortunate to be served a snack in an imbiss by a rude ignoramus but that's possible anywhere!

Will stay here again if travels justify it!

The hotel is located right across the street from the train station.
The room was enormous. Two walls had windows with views of the city. However, the AC in the hotel was not working at the time of my stay. I got a fan from the front desk, opened the windows and the comfort of the room was just fine.
The shower had hot water and good water pressure. There is an excellent bar in the lobby.
No complaints with my stay at this hotel.

This is a hotel that knows the meaning of customer service. Spotlessly clean, modern, spacious, comfortable rooms, and directly across from the main train station and at the entrance to Essen's old city. But the best part about this hotel is the staff, who consistently went out of their way to accomodate guests, incuding us. When we were there, we, and most of the guests were in town for the Rollings Stones concert in nearby Gelsenkirchen. The hotel kept the bar open until 0500 to accomodate returning concert goers, gave everyone a blanket late checkout the next day, and extended breakfast service. Amazing bartender too -- never lost his cool as post-concert groups just kept coming in. The whole focus was on ensuring everyone was able to continue to enjoy for as long as possible.

Located at the entrance the the Essen Hbf, you cannot get any more convenient that this hotel. It is cosy and comfortably and more than adequate for a short stay. The breakfast, served in a bright and sunny breakfast room, is great (the scrambled eggs were great). The rooms are cosy and quiet, I would certainly book this again when in Essen. Oh, and the whiskey bar has some great gems on the menu.

Great location - right opposite the station, which is why I come back to the Handelshof. The rooms are of a decent size. Harry's Bar is good for pre and post dinner drinks.

However, there are a couple of negative. Firstly I've had several rooms where the air-conditioning is annoyingly loud - and you can't turn it off. This recent visit I was with 3 colleagues (4 rooms between us) and we all suffered from noisy air-con. Second negative is that breakfast is pretty poor. In fact, even though we had breakfast included, on the second morning we went over the road and got a decent cup of coffee and some pastries from a cafe in the station.

Conveniently located, quiet city hotel

Friendly check in staff but had issue with cleanliness of bathroom (hairs) and bedding (hair on pillow) on Christmas Day and were offered another room, after inspection.
We stayed there a few times before, as located conveniently opposite the station in the city but apparently they changed the housekeeping and even the lamps, remote and phone was dusty.
On the plus side, the beds and bedding are lovely and you can get a good nights sleep, as very quiet.

The hotel was pre-paid but when we asked for an early check-in we were charged an extra €20. The room is bare bones but satisfactory. Definitely not warm and fuzzy. There was no concierge on duty but the desk clerk was helpful. The hotels location across from the train station makes it a choice location

Basic and poor customer service

Stayed at this hotel a few times. During my last stay, the weather got very warm. My room air conditioning didn’t work. My colleague who was also staying at the hotel didn’t have a working air conditioning. Had to uncomfortably sleep with the windows open a few times, which was a problem when the street cleaners came first thing in the morning. Had to report the fault a few times at the desk to have it fixed, first them made me feel like I didn’t know how to operate simple dials!
Some of the female customer service at the reception lack how to treat customers to say the least.

This place lacks the ambience for a relaxation outside the rooms. A basic place to stay.

Location can't be beat. Do NOT take a room that faces the Kaufhof Galleria. It is noisy out on the plaza and you can hear people talk all night on weekends. Room facing the train station were much more quiet.Staff was police, helpful and kind. Bathtub/shower quite difficult for an 80 year old to get in and out of. I would definitely stay here again.

Would have been nice to have coffee and tea facilities in the room. And note to all the women, I’d take a hair dryer with you.

Picked this hotel based on price, location and good reviews.
We booked a double superior room.

Check-in staff were friendly and spoke English (what German I learnt at school long forgotten).
Found the room to be clean, sweets on bed. Bed was firm with a soft topper.
We didn't have tea or coffee facilities in the room although reception gave us a mini kettle.
After debate reception allowed us to get some cups from outside the conference rooms (first floor). There was also milk, tea and coffee there so we stocked up.
Issue with shower was resolved the same day.

Overall we would stay there again as right opposite the train station so dead easy for airport and other links. Lidl over the road too. I never went, but just around the corner and on the high street was a cigar lounge that was recommended. Didn't have breakfast there either but went to one of the bakeries on the high street which was fresh and cheap. All the TV channels were german or dubbed aside from a few English news.

Good Stay but cleanliness needs to better.

Great hotel, great location and a bargain deal. However, me and my partner found lots of hairs on the pillows and in the bathroom. Also there was a big crack on the AC unit and it didn’t work, so we couldn’t control the temperature. However it was warm and we simply opened the window when it was too warm. There was some wear and tear on items in the room such as the mirror. But overall good stay.

Perfect location and lovely hotel

I booked to stay for one night as we were visiting the Essen Christmas market. I have visited Essen a few times but last stayed in this hotel in 2008. I tried to stay in 2015 but the hotel, which used to be a Movenpick hotel, had closed down and squatters had moved in. The hotel opened again in November 2016.

I chose the hotel because of the location and proximity to the market. You walk out of the hotel, turn right and you are in the main shopping street with the Christmas market and department store right next door. The train station is literally over the road also.

The hotel is beautiful from the outside. It’s one of the reasons I wanted to stay there. Inside is lovely too. Reception staff were helpful and welcoming. Our room was ready, even though it was before check in time, which was great!

We went up to our room on the second floor. Our room was lovely and spacious especially considering it was one of the less expensive rooms. It was clean and tidy and we were very happy with it.

The breakfast was very yummy but I would have liked more choice for €14.90 each.

We opted for late check out as our train was later on in the day. This was €20.

I would highly recommend this hotel. We had a great nights sleep, a wonderful breakfast and a great stay!

Only notes were No kettle in room so had to trek outdoors for a hot bevvy and our phone didn’t work but thank god for free WiFi and mobiles !
Reception staff pleasant but don’t acknowledge you coming and going. Missed a few friendly good mornings and hellos. Hey ho.

Didn’t push the breakfast option with us but enjoyed the hop over to galleria 5th floor resturant for a hot buffet

My room was decorated in a neutral retro-modern way, and it was very clean and tidy, with enough space for a space for a solo traveller - the bed was wonderfully comfortable as well! The shower may be a problem for someone with mobility issues though as it is over a bath, so climbing in and out of the bath may be a bit of a struggle. I noticed some reviews mentioned it was noisy at night, but my room overlooked the inner courtyard so it was perfectly quiet. Breakfast seemed pricey at 14.90 Euro but there are plenty of places in the railway station across the road, or cafes within walking distance, where you can buy a cheap coffee and a croissant. The staff were very welcoming and polite so, all in all, this is a great hotel to stay in, particularly if you need to use it as a base for travelling around the region, due to its proximity to Essen Hbf.
