Standards not up to expectations (based on enthusiastic reviews and hype). An acceptable hotel, no more no less. On plus side: location excellent for quick access to main railway station, and front desk guy was very friendly and helpful. On minus side, area is rough, room badly needed updating and it was not particularly clean. Good to have a small fridge (mini-bar type) and iron/ironing board was available on request. But overall, a disappointment and not recommended unless just for overnight to catch early train.

Hammer is right across from the train station and and easy walk to the Rhein and Alt town. The breakfast is excellent but expensive. We loved the sauna. Dining options are everywhere nearby. The staff was really lovely and nice. Rooms are clean, well accommodated, just wish they had smart TVs. We'd stay again.

Our 'Go To' hotel when we travel to Europe!

We've stayed at Hotel Hammer several times... and we will keep going back! An easy train ride from Frankfurt Airport and the hotel is directly across the street from the train station. We get greeted warmly every visit and much of the staff now feels like family. The rooms are comfortable and very quiet with special windows to reduce the noise. Breakfast is very nice with a coffee machine so you can make your own latte or cappuccino!

Perfect location, just right across the plaza from the train station and yet we never heard any noise from the nearness. So handy as a perfect starting point no matter what direction our plans were taking us, easy walk to the Old Town area and the river front just beyond, maybe 15 & 20 min respectfully at a leisurely pace. Wouldn't even consider anywhere else, the staff was beyond kind and gracious, loved our stay.

We were stationed in Mainz with military in 1980's. This was a first trip back. Great to stay just across from main train station. Lots of memories. Good location to stay, highly recommended. Staff were friendly and went out of their was to help us get to where we wanted to go.

Very central hotel, friendly staff, very quiet room even though it was overlooking a main road. Room was slightly dated but functional. Although we booked a double room it was 2 single beds pushed together, which wasn't the most comfortable sleeping experience. Only discovered the minibar on the 2nd night as it was well hidden. No kettle or tea and coffee making facilities. Breakfast would have been an extra €18 pp per day so we didn't bother with that.

might be the best hotel I've ever stayed in.

I have been traveling for business and pleasure for over 50 years. This may be the best hotel experience I've had. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. The location could not have been better. Breakfast was delicious. Price was great. The room was beautiful, comfortable and up to date. My only recommendation would be a safety bar at the foot of the tub in addition to the one on the side.

Great location. Very nice hotel. Some of the staff need a hospitality class as not very welcoming.
One staff refused to give us some ice for our room and when we insisted he asked us how many cubes. He was not shy to show his exasperation with us and it made us feel very uncomfortable.

Sewer gas from top floor bathrooms.

Don’t get a top floor room. The toilets for some reason lose their water seal and sewer gas emits from the bathroom. They will offer to clean it, but that’s not really solving the issue.

Hotel Hammer-Main Hbf is located next to the train station. The hotel is very clean, conveniently located and offers all of the necessary amenities. We arrived on a particularly warm day. The Hotel has air conditioning in each room. Our room faced the sun and was very warm. Our room AC unit did not work. The windows did not open. It was several degrees hotter in our room than in the hallway. We reported this to the manager on duty. He offered us a one 25 cm fan and said that the hotel was fully booked. The fan did not help. We did not sleep well. When we checked out at 6:00 am, the new manager on duty seemed very surprised when we said our stay had not been good. He said no one had alerted him of the situation. This should have been \"5 star stay\" if staff communicated and properly maintained the room.

The staff was extremely accommodating and kind. We loved that the hotel was centrally located. However, it was definitely loud at night with the windows open. You had to keep the windows open since the A/C units would never properly cool down the room. They would shut off after several hours only for the room to get warm again. It may not be a big deal to non Americans. For Americans, this may be an issue. Otherwise, the rooms were extremely nice.

We had a very challenging experience at this hotel. We arrived at 11:30pm and realized there is no way to drive up to the hotel. We ended up in party central trying to find parking. When we found a space and walked to the hotel ( by the sketchy train station right outside the hotel), the attendant told us we had to find our own overnight parking.

There was road work around the parking garage he pointed to down the street and no way to get there by car. We went back to our car and tried to use Google to find our way there. 20 minutes later we still couldn’t get there without driving down sidewalks. We walked back to the hotel and asked for our money back which the manager refused to give us. I was willing to take a loss and find a Marriott, but my husband persevered. Back out we went at midnight to try again for parking.
We found the garage 15 minutes later in a very undesireable location.

Then in our room ( which was clean and acceptable) there was no blackout curtain to keep the bright lights out and excessive noise and breaking glass from the bars until 5 am.

If you want to party all night this is a great location. If you want to sleep and have ease of parking beware!

We stay at Hotel Hammer just one night during a longer trip a Rhine river valley . We like location . Close to the railway station. The hotel was not new but well maintained . Staff was attentive and nice; buffet breakfast was excellent .
We left the luggage in the lockers at rail station and explored the town hands free for an entire day.
The old town center is full of treasures and the main romantic cathedral was marvellous .

Perfect in every way

This hotel was everything we hoped it would be. It was spotless, the staff was very friendly and helpful, and the breakfast was abundant and delicious. Located right across the street from the Mainz train station it was convenient for exploring other cities, but it was also located in the heart of Mainz and the Olde Town was accessible on foot. I would highly recommend this hotel. Thanks to the staff for making our first trip to Germany memorable with a desire to come back.

Great location in Mainz.

We only stayed for one night but this was an amazing hotel.
From check-in to checkout the staff were so friendly.
The bed was massive and great sized room on the 6th floor.
Great view over the main train station to people watch.
We used this as a base to travel to the Weisbaden Christmas Market and then the Mainz Christmas Market.
Would definitely stay here again.

I had a one night stay in Mainz for the Christmas Markets. I was traveling by train and the Hammer is right at the station. The room was very comfortable and quiet. The hotel staff could not have been nicer and more helpful in getting me to Frankfurt during the German rail strike. I give them 5 plus stars for their help and understanding of my situation.

Cold!! 11 degrees outside 11 degrees in the room! The heater were on maximum but not heating at all! We have a queen bed but two single blanket( not even duvet ) minibar had charge even water!! Evening receptionist was fine but next morning receptionist behaving rude! We had to show the room key for her to believe we are staying there!

The hotel is located across the street from the train station and there are busses, street cars and taxis all around. People are bustling about and the adjacent streets are very interesting for people watchers. One can walk in various directions and feel a part of the city, including the Gutenberg Museum and the very nice plaza near it with music and good food.

The entrance to the hotel is so low key you could miss it. Inside is very nicely decorated - our room on the 6th floor was really nice - note that it faced the train station and the sounds of people outside were pretty loud but enjoyable for us. We liked looking down at the scene. Anyone wanting real quiet should request a room that did not face in that direction. The staff were very welcoming and helpful.

We picked the Hammer for its location, directly across the street from Mainz Hbf and are glad we did. It was anlso only about a 20-minute walk to the Altstadt to grab dinner. Reception staff were friendly, and we were surprised at how clean and comfortable the updated room was. Fortunately it had an A/C unit because our room faced the busy train station and it would’ve been very noisy with the window open. We left early in the morning before the breakfast was open, but the desk clerk still invited us in to get a coffee and muffin to go. We would definitely stay here again.

Second rental within a month. The first one was extremely quiet and reasonably priced. The second one was larger while keeping the same quality. It was what they call a penthouse, which is a larger room.
BUT:
- They don't specify in the advertisement (or at least not clearly enough) that the elevator doesn't lift you up to the top. Or there might be a separate elevator from 5 to 6, but I haven't found it.
- The espresso coffee maker produces water, which is a good start, but a bit light for my taste. Again, maybe because I don't know how to use it, but in this case a quick explanation panel would be nice. I'm a Bialetti guy, so all the electrical devices are beyond my reach.
- The penthouse on 6th floor was not as quiet as the room on second floor. I had the impression that the street noises come from the ceiling.

As a general evaluation, it was fair and low priced. If you trust your arms and legs, and feel confident you are able to lift heavy suitcases together with your own body, then this room is for you.

The front desk staff were nice and the check in went well. The room however did not seem very clean. We had 4 flies in the room and there was a strange smell. The bathroom floor was sticky with who knows what but we made sure not to walk in there with bare feet. The location was right across the street from the train station so there was a lot of people everywhere and some unsavory ones at that. I was surprised by the rating the hotel had after staying there.
The breakfast was fair but they did not keep up with stocking the items.

Blackout curtain did not work for one window and lights from train depot and street bright throughout night. Maintenance only comes on Saturday. On last day offered to change rooms but wouldn’t be ready til afternoon. Did not give us any compensation not even fre3 breakfast. Tub was great but very slippery. Needs a mat.
