The highlights of the hotel were not in the hotel itself... it was in the location. It was in a great location in Valparaiso that was easily walkable to most things. The view from both the room and the patio were incomparable. What lowered the score were several factors: 1. The room was extremely noisy from the street even with the doors and windows closed; 2. The room was very hot (no A/C) so the doors and windows had to be open at night and there were no fans; 3. The bathroom was small, had no fan, and the ceiling was so low that you had to hunch over to get under the shower head; and 4. there were a lot of bugs in the room. It should also be noted that in our room the bathroom was ensuite but down a spiral staircase in the room. The building has controlled access and so if the front desk person stepped away (as happened several times) you have to wait outside until they come back.

A well preserved heritage hotel with helpful staff. The area has lots of hip cafes and restaurants. There is an enormous amount of street art.
Things to be aware of: The hotel is in the hilly part of the old city Valparaiso. You can expect very narrow cobbled streets and very steep climbs with lots of steps. Parking on the street is difficult.

More of a BB than a hotel

This \"hotel\" is more akin to a BB than a typical hotel. It seems a converted mansion from days gone by. As a result you get aged, small rooms with small beds and tight bathrooms that, along with the common areas, creak and crunch as you and your neighbors walk around. It can be annoying in the middle of the night when your trying to get some sleep. Breakfast on the patio overlooking the bay was a highlight. The location is a high traffic area and that means noise at peak times. The Service was great and the place has its charm but be warned; the noises due to the age of the place and busy tourist location can be a problem.

I didn't like the loft on room 10 because it was right under the terrace cafe so all the chair dragging was loud and right above you. Also, the hotel needs some furniture updating. Staff was great and hotel was very clean. Nice views!

The old building is full of charm and the view from our room was gorgeous. Breakfast, which was included, was delicious. There is a patio bar with excellent views where one can sit and enjoy the view. The hotel is located in a colorful neighborhood convenient for walking. Super- friendly and accomodaing staff. We'll be back!

The hotél is añ interesting former mansion filled ŵith antiques. Wheñ one leaves the fro nt door, which is kept locked, one is assaíled by the smell of urine, due to men drinking openly ⁰on the overlook path. NOTE...If ÿou have a lot of heavy luggage, the stairswill make you regret your choice.

Fun place. If you’re into spotless not for you, the stairs are steep and tricky, building needs quite a bit of maintenance. Built in the 1800’s I believe. Folks that run it couldn’t be nicer, the area has a lot of character and very fun, also safe. Great restaurants, pubs and cafes everywhere. Very friendly neighborhood, everyone nice. Good breakfast at the hotel, bed comfy, AC worked good. Excellent place to experience a bit of Chile, wife and I liked it a lot. It’s funky and raw, not neat and conservative.

We found the staff at the front desk very helpful and always pleasant. Our room was big and comfortable but missing a coffee machine. There is a good restaurant in the basement which is not affiliated with the hotel so no room service either. However, the location and beauty of the hotel, itself a historical building, was perfect. In truth, we very much enjoyed our stay there.

Nice Hotel in a Pleasant part of Valparaiso

A very welcoming hotel that makes you feel like part of the family and staying with friends rather than in a hotel. Staff at the front desk were very helpful in sorting out taxis and advice on what to see. As well as helping us with metro pass. We arrived early and let them know and the room was ready for us when we got there. We also used their restaurant both nights we stayed and the food and service was great I'm sure the hotel could use some money on sprucing it up but that added in part to the charm.

Classic Valparaiso Hotel

Hotel has great peraonality and staff is great! The location is perfect, near a lot, but quiet. Only negative is some of the disrepair. The sink light fixture was twisted, not fully attached. The shower doors didn't come together well. The mattress sank in as if people were still laying there. Small things that could be easily resolved. The beautiful building's age gives it lots of charm, but the little things were distracting. Overall, I'd still recommend it for the superb people and location!

Fantastic location!! All staff that we encountered we're extremely nice. Most spoke very good English which helped us a lot since our Spanish is hopeless. Our meal in their restaurant was very good. Also, without our asking (we loved our first night's room) they gave us a free upgrade for our second night.

Nice old building within walking distance of a lot of the tourist places in Valparaiso including restaurants, bars, shops and the main square. The rooms though are old and quite small and really lack any kind of sound proofing - there seemed to be a party outside every night from midnight till 5am for the week of our stay. The breakfast was also not great, mostly cut fruit, sliced meat, bread and pastry. Was a good stay though given the excellent location

Unfortunately there were too many things wrong at this hotel for me to recommend it. The heating in my room did not work the first night, they put a small portable heater in which was inadequate. The hot water did not work each morning, I had to call reception and ask them to fix it. The WiFi in the room did not work the entire stay, I had to sit in the lobby to access WiFi. On Friday and Saturday night, the loud music from a nearby nightclub went on until after 4am. The staff were pleasant and the location (apart from the nightclub) was excellent, but the hotel failed to provide the basic comforts required.

Lots to see within walking distance.

This hotel is in an old house in the old part of town. It is a quirky building with lots of stairs and you need to be able bodied to manage them. The rooms are clean, however, they could do with some updating. The breakfast was a continental breakfast. The hotel is within walking distance of lots of good restaurants and it was in a great location to get to our walking tour. Some of the day staff have English, it is more difficult with the evening staff. However, they tried their best by using a translation program. We booked our transfers through the hotel and they were great.

Loved the location in Valparaiso

For exploring Valparaiso this hotel is a great location. As a travel agent I booked this hotel for my personal stay. While I loved the history of this hotel and enjoyed the outdoor patio there are some set backs. Firstly I do have to say that the some set backs can't be avoided. For example there is no elevator (nor do I believe they could put one in) and for many this is a negative. It certainly didn't bother me but for some it would prove difficult to climb the many stairs with a suitcase etc. Although staff is very eager (and strong) to assist you with this. The breakfast was good. The room is adequate but our room had no counter space at all in the bathroom, so just a small table in the bathroom so we could leave out products etc out would be helpful. Overall if you visit this area and know how old the buildings are you should not expect much in the form of \"modern\" conveniences, but the hotels (mostly small boutique style) are good enough to make you comfortable. I thought the location of the hotel was really great. The staff was very helpful and kind!
What you have to remember when visiting Chile is that things are different - so this isn't a negative. Just embrace your experience and don't expect it to be like home...if that is what you want...then you should stay home.

The location is in the heart of everything. If you are driving and need to park, the three spaces the hotel has are on an adjacent street very close to the hotel, but the spaces are provided on a first come first served basis. Also, it helps if you google the location of the hotel and the dead end street where the spaces are before you arrive.
The hotel itself has a lot of charm and the staff could not be friendlier. I think my husband and I had the smallest economy room. It has a nice view of the pedestrian street below, however, it is next to the kitchen. So, in the mornings the staff walk back and forth from the kitchen to the dining room to serve breakfast and the floors are squeaky. so if you need your sleep in the morning you might want to upgrade to a larger room away from the main hallway. Otherwise, it was a good value.

Charming Hotel, Miniscule Room

We didn't ask for it, but were given economy room. My spouse and I barely had enough room to get around the bed. The cost was the same as a very spacious, centrally located room in Santiago. The hotel is lovely; the staff was very helpful--but the room was too small. Also there was little hot water. I'd recommend the hotel but warn guests not to take the economy room.

Like everything in Valparaiso the style of the Gran Hotel Gervasoni is dictated by the topography of the town. You can’t scratch yourself without having to climb a staircase, and because everything is both Victorian and terraced onto a hillside it is small. Once you adjust to this, it’s lovely. beautiful timbers & tiling, lovely & clean, nice sheets & towels and even a complimentary pisco sour. Should have eaten here, but didn’t. Also Daniela (one of the reception managers) was really great. Stay here.

Has potential but lacks maintenance

For the money I paid I was expecting much more. The hotel, while an old beautiful building, lacked maintenance. The furniture in the room and breakfast and restaurant areas were not in good condition, some even broken. It's a shame the old building isn't taken care of. A lot of lost potential.
The room (which was downstairs) was cold and the bathroom lacked maintenance too. The internet did not function well. The service was good though and the staff is very nice. The breakfast was ok.

If your room is on the second floor you will need to walk up steep steps (rise is ok but the run is very short). Staff at reception willingly bright our very heavy bags up for us but we had to bring them down. No parking at the hotel and on-street parking is very scarce.

Warm historic stay in Valparaiso

It's an old building for sure, and it creaks and looks worn- but it is well cared for by the management crew! It's clean, warm, great hot water showers with modern toilet facilities, new comfy beds, good breakfast and friendly staff who go out of their way to help you. Best of all, the location in the centre of Cerro Concepcion means you're just a short walking distance to most things. Relish a stay in a building with history.

An old mansion facing the Pacific

Staying at the Gervasoni is an opportunity to live the experience of a writer from the Nineteenth Century. The location is magnificaent with a stunning and poetic view of the Valparaiso Bay. One may think about Melville's novels, Flora Tristan's voyage from Bordeaux, many vessels from England going north to San Francisco 150 years ago. From the comfort point of view the hotel is only fair, but it's worth the stay.

The best place to stay for the real Valparaiso

This is a unique hotel, charming with a ton of character, located in an awesome area. One of the clerks, Ricardo, was great - the other guy not so much. The rooftop terrace is great for drinks and a view, the buffet breakfast was pretty good. Our room did not get cleaned, because they did not have another key. There is no elevator, and the stairs are very steep and narrow, but Ricardo carried our suitcases for us and that was a huge help. We would definitely stay here again.

They don't have A/C.

I booked this hotel because it had good reviews and offered air conditioning. My husband sleeps warm and needs to have a cool room. When we checked in we were told the A/C was broken, however there was no unit in the room. When we asked the gentleman at the front desk, he said it's cool at night. We asked for him to call the manager and he did only to tell us that she said only 3 rooms have A/C but none worked well. Overall the hotel was clean and in a good location, but don't advertise what you don't have. Also, why is your manager not there at 5pm?

Grand old hotel in a bohemian neighborhood

The hotel (and the neighborhood) appears to be transitioning from an old to a bohemian type of neighborhood. Area is chock full of excellent restaurants, viewing areas, artist shops and galleries, and accessible by funiculars! Definitely the area to stay in Valparaiso.
The hotel itself while is well placed and is a bit worn but that can be its charm or its deficiency--depending on your point-of-view. Breakfast buffet is more than adequate, evening drinks and tapas also very good and convenient if you don't feel like venturing out. The Pasta e Vino restaurant is in the same building of the hotel, read great reviews but didn't try it. Other great restaurants are within easy walking distance.
We had to get the right combo of internet network and password before getting success--need patience for this. Staff is overall very courteous (like much of South America) and they will try to help you in most regards.
Overall recommended but don't expect a new (say) Hilton hotel with all modern conveniences.

We had a wonderful experience!

The hotel is a 100 year old revamped mansion, which means that it still has a lot of the history and original furnishings making it quite enjoyable.

The staff at the front desk (we met 3), were ALWAYS helpful - even had one of them helping me get pizza delivered later in the evening.

Historic building at heart of historic Valparaiso

We loved this hotel - a beautiful restored historic building located within walking distance of the best of everything that historic Valparaiso has to offer. The interior is stunning - original wooden floors, ceilings etc. Includes a rooftop terrace where we relaxed in the late afternoon/evening.

I particularly want to comment on our experience with reception staff. They were super friendly and helpful - during check-in, and assisting with advice and organising cars and taxis for day trips and to the airport.

The hotel is in a great location just at the top of the lift. The wood doors are lovely, high ceilings, great staff. The bathroom is cramped but ok. No phone in room and no elevator and many stairs, but it the staff can help. Many little restaurants and shops close by. Liked the Belles Arts Museum with art collected by the same man who owned this hotel. Just 7 blocks away.

Gran Hotel Gervasoni - GRAND IT IS NOT!!

This hotel needs to be closed down and completely renovated before it falls down. No maintenance of any kind is being done. The hotel sits on the side of a hill with many stories to go up and down. The stairs and hallways are rickety with carpet runners in some places so you can't roll your case and can easily be tripped up. There are no elevators so you have to carry your luggage. Our room was not vacuumed before we had access to it. The bathroom was dreadful with no where to put anything and to get hot water in the shower you have to let the tap run for 5 minutes. Overall a very nasty place to stay. Many nice little restaurants in the area unfortunately you have to keep your eyes on the ground to avoid all the dog droppings. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

Hotel is in a great location and has a great view. That is about it.... Maybe we got bad luck but (based on people we talked is always like this) only one person at the front desk is helpful. All others are terrible! There's no willing to help even in the smallest things. Remote for a high mounted TV? Not available. Can I get one? no. Food late? Nope. Walk around dark alleys until you find a place open. Extremely tight room. Anything said the next room can be heard as lively as if neighbors are laying in the bed with you. Noise from the loose floor boards can be heard through the walls as well as the kitchen work (which by the way do not belong to the hotel?? go figure). and please, DO NOT HOLD THE FRONT ENTRANCE DOOR OPEN! They will yell at you because the AC is on. Internet? Not available. Phone lines? Not available (Blamed on a short cut, but people warned that is an ongoing issue). Parking? DO NOT COUNT on the three spots. Never available and taken by people not at the hotel! Nobody checks! IF you have another option, take it. Very expensive for what it was offered.

Hotel is on a hillside and difficult to get to by car but close to cruise port and in a nice area of town. Old hotel has narrow staircases and wood floors that creak but was very clean and in a pedestrian shopping area. Staff was very friendly and helpful and spoke English and Spanish. I would recommend this hotel.

Hi This is a funny hotel property. It is a joy to stay in, but in all honesty has some serious defects that would upset many travelers. The issue is that the the building is really really old. It is a beautiful historical mansion, absolutely full of fascinating architectural detail. The owners have clearly decided that the maintenance of this history is somewhat more important than offering the \"modern hotel experience\".

The pluses:
--Beautiful, although in a \"faded opulence\" way.
--staff was wonderful
--wild old building with stairways and passages that are too small, to steep, too many, but in the end, taken in the right spirit are really fun.
The negatives that are intrinsic to the historical house:
--Every room is different and our room was a lesser cost room.
--The bathroom was the smallest bathroom I have ever had in a hotel.
--WiFi did not work anywhere in the building except the lobby and, even there, not well
--Plumbing was leaky.

I am in a quandary on this property. We enjoyed our stay there, but I cannot in good conscious say it was perfect. All in all - I would HIGHLY recommend it to an architecture buff, modestly recommend it to a tolerant traveler, and absolutely not recommend it to someone who is picky and likes modern pristine hotels.

Hope this is not a damning review as I am in the first group and really enjoyed it.

Found the staff extremely courteous. Excellent buffet breakfast. Superb location above Ascensor Concepcion with great views. Convenient to transport and local sights.

Charming and squeaky

This is supposedly one of the oldest hotels in Valparaiso. It certainly has a lot of charm and character and it is in a totally unique building with staircases, corridors and terraces like in a fairy-tale, though our room did not feel cozy nor comfortable somehow, even though we had a superior queen room with a seaview for $178 per night. We enjoyed our stay at neighboring Hotel Boutique 17 a lot more, and the room sea views from there were a lot more spectacular as well. Both hotels were not built for noise insulation but we did not really experience any problem with noise. I have to say the staff at Gervasoni were very nice and accommodating, especially a young man who checked us in and out--he was superb, the epitome of outstanding hotel hospitality.

Lovely hotel with great views of Valparaiso, Viña del Mar and Reñaca. The room was a nice size and very comfortable. Hotel staff was extremely accomodating. Great place to stay while visiting Valparaiso or for a quick getaway from Santiago as we did.

Vintage hotel with lovely staff, great location

Stay here if you like old fashioned comfort, a hotel with original wood floors, doors, and much character. Gorgeous views of the real Valparaiso from the quaint lounge, breakfast rooms and verandah/restaurant.

Don't if you like big chain US hotels, this will be quirky for your tastes.

It was a beautiful one night stay at this hotel. The sunset over the palm tree and port in the background was gorgeous. The only reason I don't give 5 stars is that I got food poisoning from the ceviche we ate at the hotel that night. Other than that though, I would 100% go back - the service was wonderful and people couldn't have been nicer.

Great memories of Valpo

The hotel was great. We really enjoyed the location. You are in a great location in Valpo to walk around and enjoy the city's beauty and charm. And when you walk out of the front of the hotel you can see the bay and sea. You can also see the water from the breakfast area. We could see our cruise ship from breakfast. The breakfast was very good. Many selections. The staff was very friendly.

Old world charm, pleasant helpful staff.

Stayed 2 days and nights. Staff extremely helpful and English excellent. Breakfasts good, but not outstanding.The breakfast rooms were delightful. No real car parking available contrary to advertisement. There are 4 places in the street which are difficult to get to and obtain. Often had to park several streets away.However in their defence, staff carried luggage to and from car and also up an incredibly steep and narrow staircase. The room was lovely with views over the harbour. The room was light and airy and air con.good. The king bed was comfortable. Bathroom was modern and fairly spacious. WiFi worked in the room. It appears that most of the accommodation in Valparaiso is ancient. But it is quaint. If you want modern stay in Vina Del Mar. Nearby restaurants were excellent and well priced. The one below the hotel does and excellent Italian lunch, and a great pisco sour.

Great location with old world charm.

The staff was very nice and very helpful. If I recall correctly, it was formerly a house built in the 1890's. Accordingly, it has a lot of charm. The buffet breakfast is adequate, but not outstanding. The location is very good. It's in the tourist area, with good views and is very close to a funicular which is important since Valparaiso is built on mountain sides. It is close to good restaurants and the Italian restaurant on the ground floor is also very good. The room we had was small, with no where to sit. There are few drawers for clothes and the wardrobe has pegs (not a rod) to hang clothes. The bathroom was large and recently renovated. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and would stay there again despite the issues with the room.

Great location at top of funicular. Old but sympathetic ally restored to provide comfortable rooms. Beautiful wood panelling and features and a great patio with views over the harbour.

Quaint with old time flavor

The hotel is in a great location. The included breakfast was excellent, a large variety of fresh fruit and scrambled eggs as well as breads, cerals, juices, etc. Staff was very helpful in directing us to places, calling taxis, answering questions. One problem was that when we left our suitcases open and belongings in the room the maid rearranged our personal items, closed and moved the suitcases. Although nothing was missing it gave us pause to have to look through the dresser and closet for our things.
