Stayed for 2 nights. Location is very convenient with a lot of dining and shops. Really walkable. Reception at Hotel Victoria was smooth, staff were kind and friendly. The room is ok for the 2 night stay. Comfortable, however I would have wanted the bathroom to be more clean as I saw some hair on the sink and tub. Room can get noisy if you are a light sleeper since restaurants are outside, although this did not bother us. I would still stay here the next time aim back.

We requested two twin beds and were notified well ahead of time that the hotel received that request. We notified the hotel well in advance that we would arrive late — after midnight. It turned out there was no room available with two beds. But we were told the room had a king size bed. When we got to the room, we saw that it was only a double bed. There were no cups or glasses in the room. We appreciated the air conditioning in the room. We were uncomfortable during the night for the two nights of our stay. On the second morning of our stay, the bread was stale; otherwise the breakfasts were okay.

Sadly not the cozy retreat we had been promised

The information we received prior to arrival was excellent but I wasn't able to check in in advance using the on-line system. The hotel was situated in a very central location, but was quiet and felt very secure. Reception was in the Hotel Victoria ( a few doors down). The staff there were very friendly and helpful. The breakfast in the Victoria was good and they were able to store our bags for us won the last day before we flew home. The facilities listed for the Matheu (coffee shop, bar and restaurant), were situated either in the Hotel Victoria or, in the case of the restaurant, was a public restaurant between the 2 buildings. Unfortunately, although our room was clean and the bed comfortable, it was shabby, very small, and not al all as shown in the picture. I estimated it to be 8ft square which, by the time you add a double bed, a wardrobe, 2 adults and 2 suitcases, left VERY little room for manoeuvre. To make things worse the small window in the room had a dreadful outlook which discouraged us opening it or even looking out of it. We kept the curtains closed most of the time. The room felt very claustrophobic. Other rooms we saw looked much better. Sadly not the cozy retreat we had been promised.

Hostel Matheu is a part of a bigger hostel chain called Victoria 4. You still need to check in at that location if you want to stay at the other hostel. The staff are very friendly and know Spanish and English. The location itself is around a bunch of restaurants and shopping. It is also about a 12 minute walk to the palace. I only got to stay here for one night, but it did the trick!

Very basic room in the heart of the gothic quarter. Very easy access areas around Madrid. Only negative is the noise I'd say. Our room faced the street which was noisy all night long with people, a dance club, trash pick up etc going on. But for the price and location it was good for us; take a noise machine with you and you'll be alright

If you want to experience \"La Fiesta\" around the Madrid area, this is the place to stay. If you are planning to rest, you better look for another option. This hostal is located around a lot of rest & bars and you will be hearing, music, people talking and laughing loud all night even if the doors and windows are closed. For the purpose of my trip, the place met my needs.

Decent hotel in an excellent location

For those who are seeking for a decent stay in the center of Madrid with limited budget, this hotel is a good choice. Clean room, friendly staff. Wall might be thin as you could hear people talk outside the room, but it didn't bother us much.

Pros: The woman who works during the day is very friendly. The location is great for sightseeing, as it's right in Puerta del Sol. Overall, the hostal, while very basic, is kept very clean.

Cons: DO NOT stay here if you are a light sleeper. Especially if placed in room 3 or 4. They face out on the street and since it's right in Puerta del Sol, you can hear the music and people partying all night long (until 6 am). I was also quite disappointed because I had emailed the hostal a couple of weeks before my arrival to request a double bed since I was meeting my SO in Madrid for the weekend, but was told only that they would see what they could do. When I arrived, I was told that there were no double beds available. I felt like they had not attempted to grant my request at all.

Stayed with 2 mates. It's right in the middle of town a short walk from puerta del sol. Wifi worked great. Lots of restaurants and bars around which is nice, but it can be a bit noisy. Great rooms and service. We got it on sale so it was well worth it, only 40 euros a night for 3 of us

Bustling with life !!

The hotel is located in the middle of Puerta del Sol, a very lively location. It bursts with life at night with all the pubs around, but there are two layers of window panels to help keep out most of the noise.

Location is great, able to get to attractions easily.

Rooms are very clean and cozy, but the bathroom is a little bit too cramped. Staff is very polite and helpful. The hostel does not provide hot water, so you can't make your own tea or coffee.

Overall, I enjoyed my stay here and will definitely come back.

Unser Aufenthalt im Hostal Matheu war insgesamt angenehm. Das Zimmer und das Badezimmer waren für unsere Familie etwas klein, und der Preis erschien uns ein wenig hoch. Only book this place to store your luggage or if you have bad hearing and don’t care much for hygiene. A club under which plays loud boring music all night and walls as if of paper. You hear every step and whisper by neighbors around. Mould in the bathroom and bedsheets not clean. It was a “cheap” option in an expensive city, but it’s better to allow yourself a good rest after a day in this amazing city. Hopefully you can afford not to stay at Matheu.

Situación excelente, en pleno centro. Limpieza bien. No funciona el aire acondicionado, la tv totalmente desprogramada y con el uso del mando solo funciona a 5 cm de distancia. Insonorización excelente.

Ideal per visitar Madrid en família!

Exel.lent ubicació! Habitació, senzilla per passar una estada curta. Cal repasar alguns detalls de l'habitació que denoten deixadesa, el màneg de la porta del bany cau, algún troç de paper de la paret es veu desenganxat o manca repasar la pintura. Però tot i això ha estat ideal per la nostra visita en família a Madrid!

El hotel es muy malo en general, lo único rescatable fue la chica del check in en la noche, una habitación vieja si, pero podría haberse rescatado, pero no! El ruido es insoportable, la gente entra azotando la puerta, gritando, borracha y haciendo escándalos, y nadie les dice nada, porque no hay nadie para decirles algo, pedimos un cambio de habitácion y nos la dieron, pero la habitación no la limpiaron como tal, una toalla y una de las camas sucias y tenían rastros de cabellos, olían a sudor las almohadas, la verdad es un fiasco este lugar, nada nada recomendable.nunca nos limpiaron la habitación, y eso que lo reportamos.
