I checked in the day before using their app provided via text message. Their app gave me the choice to check-in at 3pm, 3:30pm, 4pm, etc. So I chose 3pm. The next day I arrived at the hotel at 3pm. The desk clerk told me that check-in time is 4pm, I could pay an extra $40 for \"early check-in\" or come back at 4pm. They had plenty of empty rooms ready, by the way. So I paid the extra $40, and vowed to find other hotels in the future that do not bait-and-switch like this.

At 4:15am we went to turn the heat on in the room - smoke and fumes belted out along with a loud voice saying 'FIRE' 'FIRE' 'FIRE' - then the room smoke detector alarm started sounding off over and over. We turned the heater off - the fumes in the room were horrible. Since its a small room it filled up pretty quickly so it was not healthy - we got ready and checked out.

Outside of the property needs some grounds work and a exhaust fan in the bathroom would be great additions to the property. Rooms were clean and quite, and the breakfast was nice and well stocked. Arrived early and paid the $40 early check in - waste of money! Pool was very dirty - I had to skim it myself before my kids got in. The hot tub was also dirty and cold! After the pool, we went back to our room. A/C worked well and it was too cold for us. We turned the heat on to warm up - plastic burnt smell filled the room, fire alarm went off and our room phone did not work for us to call the front desk. After calling from our cell phone, we had someone come up to give us a new room. New room smelled of cigarettes! Another, smaller, room was offered. We took it since we needed to change from the pool still. Following morning, our room keys deactivated! This was a horrible experience and we would never stay at this location again. After issues had begun on day 1, I did ask if we could cancel our stay and I was willing to find another location. I was told since it was booked by Expedia, they could not issue any refund to our stay. Oh, and they do not off housekeeping! You need anything, you pick it up yourself from the front desk!

I was surprised and happy to find this Best Western in Escondido. I stay in Escondido once a year and never knew about this property. I found it to be better than average overall. I was quite surprised at the look of the hotel compared to the pictures. It was very outdated. The hallway had a terrible smell on the 2nd flor. The room was clean though. The breakfast was ok but the breakfast area was really small and cramped. The receptionist (maybe manager) was extremely rude to us. I will not go back or recommend. It was pretty expensive for the experience :(

Rough Start but Good Stay Overall
We arrived and unfortunately the room we were assigned was not clean. Nonetheless, the manager made arrangements and gave us a suite. The only caveat was that the next day we were going to switch to another suite since the hotel was fully booked. It was incovenient to have to move rooms twice in our two night stay but I'm glad that at least the room we got was upgraded. The managers did their best given the circumstances.
