I've stayed at Hotel Berna a few times before, although it had been about 10 years prior to my recent visit. It's a great choice when you need to be near Milan Centrale train station for an early departure or because of a late arrival. Hotel Berna is interesting. The rooms are very different from another, so never quite sure what you are going to get, but you can be pleasantly surprised. This time I got a ground floor room, which felt a little dated, but was also quite large and had a jacuzzi tub (not one of the dated elements). Overall, very nice. I like the restaurant next store, which stays open a little late. I didn't have time for breakfast this time, but I remember that the breakfast and breakfast room are great. This is a hotel I will probably return to, next time I need to be near the train station.

Despite the annex being virtually empty I was given the worst room in the entire hotel. I am not sure if this is in retaliation to booking with Expedia as a means of discouraging booking via 3rd party sites.
Room 126 noise level is on an industrial scale and is not fit for human habitation. If it were a workplace the work safe authorities would probably shut it down.

I rang down to reception and duty manager came up and did his well rehearsed attempt to fain surprise and concern. He then went to an electrical switch panel and turned off the air con fan.

Firstly the practice of low level staff tampering with electrical system panels is unsafe and poses a severe threat to guests safety. Low level, low skilled staff should never be allowed to interfere with electrical switch systems and could easily result in critical safety systems being compromised.

I was told I cold either have the noise or no air con. This in the middle of winter and as an elderly traveller put my health and safety at risk. I did no realise how cold and low the temperature in that room would plummet overnight. The result was I on my return home I was hospitalised with a lung infection from the severe chill endured in what was a situation which was not fit for habitation let alone a paying guest.

I was not given the option to move to another room, perhaps due to the fact the other rooms were no better but suspect more out of pure discourteous lazy attitude and complete disregard for the health of gues

Wish hotels.com would give option for breakfast included in price of hotel. It was expensive and were not informed of the price. $108 (15 euro per person) for 4 per day for a breakfast is not cheap!
But everything else was excellent!

Overall, I had a great stay at this hotel. The only slightly negative thing to point out is the rooms are dated/old and you can hear your neighbors’ conversations, when they use the bathroom, etc. But everything in the room worked fine and that is all I cared about. The staff were great, and the breakfast was wonderful (a great start to my day). The best part is the location. It is only a couple of blocks from Centrale station, and I knew I would be coming into Milan that way as well as taking a tour out of there – so it was very convenient. Plus, there was a Metro stop (which I used a lot) right on the corner. There were also plenty of restaurants within walking distance including a Michelin-rated dim sum place that ended up being one of my favorite meals. I highly recommend this hotel.

The reason for choosing this hotel was because of breakfast and location--but for different reasons than one can imagine.
The breakfast - I think this was the best part of the stay, fairly decent selection--a little bit of everything, but I would not call it a good value for a 4-star hotel. Other 4-star hotels (e.g., in Kyoto, JP, or London, UK.) offered more variety and better quality.
The location - I chose it for convenient access to Stazzione Centrale, as I had to fly in and out of Milan' Malpensa airport a couple of times and didn't want to spend > $100 on taxi, so I took a bus conveniently to/from the train station. The added bonus was that we walked to central Milan and were able to keep up w/our daily steps, so yes, added bonus. But the area is as good as it can get close to a train station.
The hotel - I don't know why it is a 4-star hotel. I would place is squarely in the 3-star category. Sure, the staff was very friendly and accommodating (except for a breakfast that we could not enjoy because we left very early and they gave us a breakfast bag that we could not eat because mostly everything was sweet, and it was a bummer considering that the breakfast was one of the reasons we stayed there). The property needs a good refurbishing, the hardwood in the rooms was heavily scratched, the paint on the walls was worn out, in some spots peeling off, the bedding was not goose-down (a must for a 4-star hotels, IMO).

Rooms were good size for Italy, very nice bathroom, and a good amount of space. Very convenient to train station (3 min walk) and a good selection of nearby restaurants. Unfortunately, the osteria recommended by the front desk (Mamma Rossa) was overpriced, overlit, with wines not properly stored, mediocre food, and waiters who tried to guilt guests into adding an additional service charge/tip even though 99% of the places in Italy do not do that.

Our stay began with an unfriendly gentleman at check in. Once completed, we began walking to the lobby elevator and Mr. Unfriendly responded with a sneer that we were in the building across the street. Ummm, why didn’t he tell us at check in? Our friends had Luka at check in and he graciously walked us across the street to our rooms.

We spent a couple of evenings in the bar with Danielle and he was awesome! After the second night of our three night stay, the four of us were returning to our rooms and the elevator stopped. We contacted the front desk via a cell phone because the elevator button didn’t work. Luca contacted the elevator company then walked across the street to talk with us while we were stuck. We were finally set free after an hour +. Luca apologized profusely and gave us water and cokes.

When we asked how we would be compensated for our horror/inconvenience, we were told that we needed to speak with the manager. The unfriendly desk clerk came by our table in the bar the following evening offering a drink coupon for our trouble with the elevator and we refused it because that wouldn’t make the situation right. Long story short, we never were able to speak with said manager before we checked out. When I emailed questioning a charge and asking about our inconvenience, all I received was a “sorry”.

I find it sad that front desk personnel are not empowered to do the right thing when customers experience inconveniences.

I do not recommend this hotel!

The hotel staff was excellent. The room was clean. It was on the smaller side, but this is Europe. It’s to be expected and it had everything that I needed. The price was right. Hotel Berna is the perfect location to tour Milan. It is a very pretty and the rooms are spacious with cherry wood flooring. The bathroom is well equipped and spacious also. The best part of staying at Hotel Berna is the wonderful staff and delicious food. The morning buffet has something for every taste, including a juicer with fruits and vegetables. This is a true treasure among the beauty of Milan.

This is the last hotel i stayed for my trip. Very good area. Near Milano central train station. 5 minutes walk. Easy access to airport shuttle bus and restaurants nearby. My room again was single bed and I must said very Italian style. I enjoyed staying here very much. Free breakfast provided for my staying. Staff Vanessa and Jacqulyn was so friendly and made me feel like home.

Room has no street view and quiet at night. Sound proof plus necessary complimentary necessities.

My fridge isn't working but it was alright for me since I don't drink cold stuff. Front desk did offered to exchange it for me.
I will definitely stay here if I ever travel to Milan in the future.

Great location with excellent restaurants within walking distance. The place was clean and well-equipped. However, I did not feel comfortable staying at their tower which locates across from the main hotel. Any stranger could enter the building by following us (luckily it did not happen).

Stayed here with three friends in August. Travelled from Bergamot Airport by shuttle bus so was just a few minutes walk from the drop off at Central Station.Check in was smooth and we were lucky to get into our rooms early.Very happy with the room especially with the mini fridge which was replenished daily with soft drinks and water.Staff were all lovely and helpful.Wi fi was very good.Only one small thing that we thought was unusual in this day and age was we had to leave our room keys behind reception when we left the hotel .We would definitely return to Berna.

Good location just around the corner from the Metro stop, easy to get everywhere in Milan. The desk service was good and they were very helpful and recommended an excellent restaurant. The rooms are a bit small - but that is true everywhere in Italy! Big enough for two.

Lovely hotel close to Milano Centrale train station. Nice and safe to walk around with lots of police visible and many restaurants nearby . Very close to Metro and only 4 or 5 stops from Duomo .

Very close to the train station! 24 front desk. Room is clean. They gave us free water and soda upon arrival, highly appreciated! The only negative thing is the size of the bathroom. I’m a petite person and there was hardly enough room for me to shower. The toilet situation is kinda weird. With the bidet in an angle with the toilet seat, it was just enough room for my petite legs. If you have long legs, it will be uncomfortable. Other than that, we like everything else.
