Not much space between the bunk beds meaning only 1 of the 4 sleepers can access the under the bed locker at the time. Only 2 hooks on the wall to hang jackets for 4 people. Beds very basic but comfortable. No privacy whatsoever! Other hostels deal with this with roller blinds… plug sockets away from the beds so bring a long cable (like a 2-3 meters one.

Toilets and showers are at the very end of a long corridor so if you need a wee in the middle of the night get ready for an excursion. The gents toilets were either blocked, out of service or in a very bad state. None of the 5 toilet doors would close because the entire frame was out of place.

The bar (although painfully slow) and the breakfast were good and the atmosphere was young and vibrant.

The bedrooms didn’t have shelves or even a hook. Just one overhead light in room, individual beds could have benefitted from personal light and charger point.
Woken twice in the night by noise.
Clean sheets. Decent food and drinks.

The place has a fun vibe and most of the staff is quite good. However, during my second stay there was a new lady who appeared to be completely uninterested and for some reason gave me the worst rooms possible even after I mentioned the first room was a dump with no windows and 8 people crammed inside a small space (how is that even legal?) I hope and believe that it wasn’t on purpose but later when I tried to change the guys were wonderful and helpful and assisted with request. It’s a great hostel but they need to have more female dorms. It’s not fair to be forced to sleep next to drunk and smelly boys on a week night or any night for that matter.

I find Generator to be one of the best hostels in London. The location is excellent and the staff tend to be both welcoming and friendly.

The basement shower area could do with \"an upgrade\", but the water is always warm.

Experience at this hostel was rubbish..On arrival, we were told our room had been given away (this was at 10pm) and we were forced to stay in separate rooms for the first night.

The staff were short-tempered and unhelpful when we tried to resolve the issue. The rooms themselves were just about average but clearly in need of some maintenance.

The shower blocks were also poorly maintained and could do with a thorough clean and refresh.

Overall, a disappointing stay that I wouldn’t recommend.

Location is amazing, staff are rockstars and social aspect is exactly what I hoped for. The reason for the downgrade in rating is due to the obvious lack of maintenance. There was a fire door near our room with a broken closure that caused the door to slam into a wall each time someone walked through it. The showers were is a VERY poor state, with only three showers operating on our floor. With as many customers who stay here I feel it’s a shame a place I have always enjoyed to stay falling due to simple lack of upkeep.

I booked a room with private bath. The room was very spacious, even with a King bed in it. The bath was large also. It was at a corner, offering quietness and privacy. There were a lot of school kids from likely Spain, literally hundreds, but this did not bother me at all. The full breakfast was great at 9.50 pounds. Also tried a hamburder for dinner - it was amazing! Easy walk to the Brunswick and Euston stations. There are a bunch of cafes and eating places next to the Generator. Overall, this was a good place to stay. I will return again if the opportunity presents itself. Staff was great!

Decent stay for the price and great location!

Cheap and cheerful stay at the Generator. Great location (easy walking distance to King's Cross and other tube stations) and it had everything you needed really. Shop for toiletries etc., free sanitary products, lockers available to purchase for the day, and even a great bar with some great food at a reasonable price. Outside area (smoking area) could be upgraded to allow people to sit outside. Moreover, the rooms are a little small - we stayed for 3 days in a private room, and I don't think I could have stayed longer in the room (stuffy and slightly claustrophobic). Bathroom decent and had toiletries stocked. Overall, I would stay again if staying only a few days.

Bad sleep, gross accommodation

During a 3 week trip to the UK, Ireland and France, booking a private room at this hostel for my family was my single regret. We only needed 2 nights accommodation in London, and I don't mind basic. But this is not a \"nice\" hostel with a bit of atmosphere, where you bring your family if you're traveling on a budget, and aren't looking for frills. It's a party hostel. We were on Floor 2, above the large bar, and heard loud music until late at night both nights. It felt institutional with its dimly lit industrial-looking hallways, and scant bathrooms, which frequently ran out of hand soap and toilet paper. (1 bathroom per floor - where a hundred people might be sleeping - is not sufficient.) The rooms are tiny, barely room to move around. The hallways and bathroom smelled. We didn't sleep well and woke up each morning wanting nothing more than to get out of the place. It was honestly a nightmare and I was so glad to check out. Don't stay here unless you're 19 and don't care about getting a good night's sleep.

Terrible hostel. Do not stay here. The staff arent good so its run a bit like a madhouse. From having to wait 1hr to check in because they had no keycards. Then random people were sleeping in 2/4 beds which staff did nothing about just gave clean bedding and told us find an empty one. All this after we came back from a night out, its not exactly ideal. And finally but worst of all the place does not look like the images. Its either really dated photos or edited as ffff. The showers and toliets are all small, broken in one way or another and smelly. The toilets were always covered in poop but i guess this says more about the guests than the staff but broken toilets dont help. There is 4 showers for about 50 guys per floor, Same with toilets. The bedroom lacked plug sockets and only had usb A outlets on the beds. There was a rat in the breakfast area. There was one small fan in the room with bunks so the people on top just roasted all night no breeze. There was literally no where to hang your clothes when changing in the 1 of 2 changing rooms per 50 guys. So everything is on the floor. Same in the shower and because its tiny, your dry clothes cant not get wet. The underbed lockers are big but loud as ffff not ideal when sharing with 4 muchless 8 or 12. They also took some of my stuff when they cleaned, had to get it from the basement among all the dirty towels etc. Literally the worse place I have ever stayed and I'm from a 3rd world country. Ive seen bad and this is it.

The receptionist guy was being difficult unnecessarily. He ended up doing exactly what I had asked him in the first place but after 5 mins of back and forth. Guess he was bored. The room was right next to the smoking area so there was constant smell of cigarettes coming into the room even through the windows were closed. It was very off putting but other than that, the place has a super fun vibe, clean, location is great and crowd in general is nice with occasional creeps here and there. Didn’t have breakfast but it looked delicious from a distance. Plenty of activities/ games to enjoy with friends. Overall, good spot!

Location was ok, rooms were in a horrific state. The beds were not cleaned at all and had so much hair (of all body parts), dirt, and stains/substances all over them. The fact that staff did not even care to change the sheets with unidentifiable substances on them is absurd. We politely asked if our room was even cleaned and the staff gave a horrible attitude and said yes. We requested a room change but the next room was just as dirty. I can not emphasize enough how dirty these rooms were and the rudeness/hostility of staff.

My family and i had the room downstairs which meant at -1 level.
Room quite high with big windows that couldn’t be opened. There was a small air con machine barely functioning which was really noisy.
Because of that was hot and my sleep was not great. Kids were ok
Second room was on the 4th floor and was extremely hot. Window could only be opened by 5-6 cm and no air con machine.
Sleeping was very difficult. Kids ok (it was the end of an exhausting day)
We just staid for a night so we can’t tell more.

Stayed in the 10-bed dorm mixed, as a girl and solo traveller and the hostel was a lot better than I was expecting. It’s in a great location and can be a good vibe. Theres a nightclub downstairs but it’s got a security guard so not anyone can come in.

It was safe and clean. A bit of a walk to the ladies bathroom but that’s okay.

The bunks don’t have curtains which I think in a mixed dorm they should. I’d brought a sarong with me by chance and just used that.

I also think there should be kitchen facilities? There wasn’t anywhere to make a cup of tea or put perishable goods in the fridge.

You can store luggage but not for free.

Theres one tiny little elevator that serviced the whole hostel so its hard if you are moving luggage especially at the same time the staff are cleaning the rooms (which happens to be the same time as check out).

Overall would stay again.

Get what you pay for.

For a budget hotel you get budget rooms. But they are very noisy, very warm and ours just smelled of damp/ sewerage from the drain. Was rather unpleasant but for one night it served a basic purpose.

Not much sleep was had because of how warm the room is. Rather disappointed during summer there’s not cooling facilities like a fan etc. especially when it’s 30c out during the day.

No clear indications of where showers were and bathrooms and showers were always in less than clean conditions. For summer weather this was not the place for us and wouldn’t stay again at anytime of year.

The check in was a complete nightmare as they couldn’t find my reservation, the member of staff on check in was awesome though and got it sorted eventually, I was just so tired I needed to get to bed 😂. This was my first hostel experience ever so was a bit eye opening and I was a bit worried about trying to make up my bed while others were sleeping but by the time I’d woke up they had already gone so I wasn’t made aware if I’d caused disturbance. I would stay again though if needed

Buffet breakfast is definitely worth it if you pay in advance for £7.50, or £9.50 on the day. Most staff were nice and helpful and understanding. Lucked out staying here on a warm weather weekend though - the rooms have poor to no ventilation due to small openings in windows, no cross flow, no dedicated fans in each room, and no aircon. First day was 33 celsius so the room was an absolute stiffling sweatbox making for very poor sleeping conditions. Took 36 hours to finally get a fan in the room but it did little to help reduce the temperature even though the outdoor temperature dropped over the three days to below 20 celsius. The room remained very hot. In winter I'm sure the place is nice and cozy but on proper summer days beware, or ask for a lower level room because you can feel the heat increase each floor you go up. Bathrooms and showers on some levels are questionnable, no hooks or shelves, cramped width and height. Only one lift in the building which was broken during a peak period. The place gets pretty lively at the bar so can be good for sociability when the adults outnumber the students. Luggage lockers sting a bit, £2 two hours, £6 six hours, £8 hours. Late checkout to 1pm £5, so consider your plans so you dont get stung for both.

How did they survive COVID?

While the beds were very comfortable, the lack of airflow in the rooms was stifleing. The windows only open 2 \" and the fan's they use produce almost no air. Luckily someone else had pushed the wi dow through the track, so it was easily wide ed and we put the fan in the wi dow, upside down to get a mediocre, but life saving air flow.

Generators are excellent and I’ve never had a bad time at one except for one time in Paris. This Generator is excellent. They did have students at this one during my stay however security was excellent at keeping them in their rooms and well behaved during their stay. Staff are helpful and extremely accommodating. They let me use office space so that I could get work done. They made sure I got checked in early and had everything I needed including a charger. The staff were absolutely AMAZING and that’s an understatement. Kudos to this Generator. This was definitely the best staff I’ve ever encountered at a hostel or hotel. The rooms were cleaned daily. Their shower and toilets were also very well and up kept. Not a single shower stall was broken or dirty.

Awful check in experience and they almost wouldn't even let me stay despite having paid. Room was run down and the bed was two mattresses and a broken headboard. Felt like being in a prison cell. Someone tried to get into my room in the night. Bar staff were rude. The receptionist barged past me.

Only one small lift so it's either the stairs or wait a long time.

Avoid this place.

Please teach your staff that not every disability is visible. I shouldn’t have to explain to 6 or 7 staff why I need to access the disabled toilets in front of random people too. It’s incredibly humiliating. Then when I explain why for them to look at me as if I’m talking crap and interrogate me and pull faces as though I’m lying. And to be stopped by cleaners while accessing the disable toilets with my fob card that is activated for the disabled toilets to open for me and be refused entry by 2 cleaners and questioned on why I’m not using regular toilets even after I’m showing them my card is activated for the disabled toilet doors and that I have a medical reason. For this to happen 2 days straight. I’m genuinely upset. I was supposed to stay an additional day but didn’t because of it this. It’s disgusting.

The staff seems to be untrained and surely is unwilling to help, specifically at the front reception. As with dorms you pay what you get for, but Generator London is clearly not worth it. Shared bedrooms show no separations or curtains to ensure privacy, shared bathrooms are run down and failing apart, and everything is for sale: a towel, a cable to charge your phone...etc. Finally the breakfast is not great either.

With that being said it was our first time staying in a hostel and we were pleasantly surprised how nice it was. The rooms are small of course if you are traveling with lots of luggage which we were. But for just 1 night it was perfect for us. The atmosphere was great and there were plenty to do. The drinks and food were amazing. My son said their fish and chips were the best he had in all of London.

They have no accessibility support for people, the women's bathroom are very thigh on both toilet area and shower, no hangers for stuff inside the washrooms. no space for hanging clothes or towels. the washrooms should have a layout like a gym with benches and space to hang things while you are using. Food, staff was good, cleanliness also good, good area/location

Poor Heating, Not Clean

When we went into our room the window had been left open and the temperature of the room was around 10C. We couldn't adjust the thermostat. The front desk told us that they only turn on the heat for two hours during the day and three hours at night. The heat is not a boiler and is just a ceiling mount electric heater. The bathrooms were dirty and stunk. The room floor was sticky.
