Beautiful well-located hotel, with updated modern appointments throughout. Gorgeous pool area, jacuzzi, segregated wet and dry saunas. The room was huge and completely renovated with modern amenities throughout. One quibble: the room was very hot, with no way to cool it except opening a window, which brought in the polluted air of Almaty. Excellent high-end buffet breakfast

One big issue was with the staff. Curt throughout, even considering the language barrier. When we checked-out they demanded we pay for a small hand-towel they claimed we had soiled. Whereas we had interacted entirely with women before, they had a male supervisor confront us, who spoke more English and sternly ordered us to pay. It wasn't much, so we decided to pay and leave rather than pursue it. Very strange experience indeed!

We stayed on the ground floor away from the road and it was really quiet. The breakfast was ok for a small hotel. We found the hotel comfortable.We did have a safe problem, which wasn’t fixed, but we did only stay 2 nights.

Arranged an airport transfer with the hotel before I travelled and when I left. Both excellent. Communication superb. Booked a single room which was more than spacious enough for a single traveller. Very comfortable bed and bottles of water delivered daily. Bathroom and shower more than adequate. There was a small room on my floor where guests could iron their clothes. Ask reception for the location and it'll save you packing a portable iron. The cooked element of breakfast was middling but there was plenty of other options available (cold meats, cheese, porridge, fruit, yoghurts etc). Wifi very much up to scratch. Had no problems with emails and using Spotify. Had a very pleasant stay here.

Had a good stay here. Staff were friendly and spoke good English. I didn’t use the spa facilities but I was given a tour and they looked fantastic. A shame I didn’t have enough time to partake. Breakfast was ok. I found the room very warm and needed to open the window during -15c to cool down a bit. The radiators didn’t seem to be adjustable.

We booked 2 rooms and stayed for 2 nights. Checkin was swift and our first impression was good. However, there were serious lapses in terms of service:
1. The reception offered us packed breakfast box as we have a tour following morning before the breakfast starts (at 6am) but they forgotten to make the arrangement with the restaurant
2. We left our luggages with the hotel after checkout and there were no luggage tag and they did not take note of number of pieces. When we retrieved our luggages later, they left out one piece until we went in to the storage room to identify our missing luggage
3. We left a charger and powerbank in the room, and we asked about it 3 hours later, we have to go to different floors to hunt the housekeeping staff to retrieve our items
4. There is no one at the reception counter most of the time when we have questions or requests

Everything about Tien Shan excuses class. The staff are professional and courteous, the amenities are top notch, the rooms spacious, clean, and comfortable.
The breakfast dining facilities were well laid out with a sumptuous array of food items
I especially appreciated how well located Tien Shan is. From there, almost everything one needs is within a20 minute walk.

The hotel is located on an ideal green area of Almaty surrounded by parks and museum, however, as we live in the world of technology, there were at least one socket that dud not work., they also charged for ectra drinking glasses into the room as well as knives and forks. When ordering room servuce staff forgot certain items such as a fork or molk for coffee. There is no morning drinking facilities. I would nit come back to the hotel again if I am being honest and will go back to the hotel I stayed before.

The property is in an excellent location but unfortunately that is the only positive thing about it. Hotel itself is quite outdated and need a massive reonavtion and some proper love and care. The reception staff are not at all helpful and border line rude. They act as if they are doing the guests a favour by even answering them. They have absolutely no sense of customer service, which is a basic expectation from a 4/5 star hotel. The breakfast is really poor, better not to waste your time there, just walk to many beautiful / well served cafe dotted around Almaty. The spa and spa staff are nice but parts of the spa are continuously booked for private treatment. Overall a very poor hotel/service.

I stayed here 3 years ago, and it was nice enough. They are making major changes to the facade of the building, giving it a modern look. I noticed better quality food from room service, plus it is now available 24/7. They have a shuttle service to the airport, but you must pay. Also improved was the spa experience, with a wonderful massage. Well-stocked mini bar in the fridge. I wish there was a kettle in the rooms for early morning coffee. Also, the Wifi is the same, not very fast.

Great Potential, needs improvement

This hotel is well located with proximity to several attractions in walking distance.

The hotel is nice, but can be so much better. Firstly, my pickup reached 45 mins

The maintenance is crumbling at places. Drawer knobs, showers faucets etc. were falling off and rusted.

Secondly, at check in as they gave me a much smaller room. After me objecting, they checked and moved me to my actual suite room.

Thirdly, for a family paying for 4 individuals and a suite, their daily room housekeeping was poor (providing only 2 small water bottles, having to remind to place tea cups in the room and so on). We had to even remind them once to take out the trash from the room (despite the room having being cleaned).

I extended my 6-night stay by half a day as my flight was late. The manager told me they gave me an expensive room erroneously but actual price was higher. They charged me 70K KZT for the room extension (higher than my original booking rate).

I checked later, the same room was available online much cheaper.

They genuinely try, but very few of the staff speak English to be able to actually help their guests. As they attract more guests, they will need better staff who smile, and who help. The security at the main gate are grumpy and don’t extend a helping hand when they see a family with luggage, small children.

No proper business centre (though it promises one).

Ms. Aliaa at the reception stands out being helpful and knowledgeable. Thank you Aliaa

The hotel was very comfortable and gracious in style.

The wifi worked well. There was almost too much hot water and the shower pressure was phenomenal.

The spa was excellent. I only wish we had time for a massage.

Breakfast was dangerous to the waist line. Their pastries and breads were particularly top notch.

I really enjoyed the cleanliness of my room, the and the variety of the buffet for breakfast. The room was quite old and both the sink and the shower tub clogged, both would be quite obvious and easy to fix, apparently they don't care much anymore. The elevator is broken/under construction, noone cares to help with luggage.
The service was terrible, the security was looking at me with suspicion, apparently they smile for foreigners sometimes. The reception refused to provide an invoice because I paid through hotels.com as if they didn't get the money. There is Rahat Palace for same price but 5 star and much better, this one doesn't care about it's quality any more.

I have stayed at this hotel many times as it is in a great location and very convenient for my needs. The interior of the hotel is a little dated and showing its age, but the room is always clean and comfortable and the staff are friendly and helpful. The shower has a tendency to leak onto the bathroom floor, but this was a relatively minor inconvenience. The breakfast selection is ok although the coffee machine a bit dated! I'd be happy to stay again.

At this time of year, there were very few people, so it was very quiet. The food was decent, and the spa massage was great. I liked the location for just wandering around, with a few small parks nearby. The reception staff were very helpful. The hotel is about 25 minutes from the Almaty airport.

Located in a quiet part of Almaty and ideally situated to explore the north and south parts of Almaty. Some of the roads nearby are pedestrian only, which makes it easier to find your way around town.
The hotel is styled in an old-fashioned manner and the rooms are likewise. My deluxe room was probably just about the right size for a single traveller but no coffee is provided, which was a bit annoying. The view from my room was of the back of the hotel so not much to speak about. Breakfast area was spacious with enough options to cater to most people.
Staff was friendly enough and helped me get familiar with the major sights around the city.
Most evenings there is a pianist playing some lovely music, which does add some charm to the hotel.

We had a marvellous 2 weeks stay .This is a Great hotel in a great location ,with Very polite ,friendly and helpful staff.
We have stayed at several hotels in Almaty as we visit Kazakhstan twice a year.
I think we will stay at the Tien Shah Hotel on any future visits.
My only criticism is no kettle and hot drink facilities in the room ,standard at other Hotels .
I was also Surprised after we returned to the Hotel having being out in 34 C weather . That we were not allowed the complimentary cold fruit drink in reception. Being informed this was only for clients booking in and out of the Hotel.
That apart this is a lovely Hotel and a great place to stay.

Service was perfect. Tap in handbasin was defective - it kept spraying me when I took it up to normal pressure. The showerhead was also defective - it too sprayed everywhere once to up to normal pressure.

I did not bother reporting these faults as I was short on time and could not be bothered changing room.

One person ruined it all. We looked online and the place looked great. We saw our room and it was great. We got to go to the pool and besides a weird rule for plastic bag on your head it was nice. Breakfast was good and comparing to other places probably great.
So my only complaint was one desk staff worker who was hired by the hotel. We asked for water bottles which are less than 510 tengi or $2 dollars. She said it was policy for them to only give one bottle per room. My wife said that we have 5 people staying in the room and she said sorry. I went down and said that my wife is pregnant and she can't go out in the dark in the snow at night for water. The lady seemed more interested in being on the computer. So I went in -8 C or 17 F degree snowy weather at 10 at night to get water for our kids and wife. I was very very angry. The weird thing is that the pool people offer water. So the staff didn't measure up to quality needed. Otherwise we liked the hotel.

Pick your poison: Mosquitoes or hot, stuffy room

Although the amenties such as a piano player, on-site spa, and included breakfast were nice, the first priority in any hotel stay is to get a good night's sleep. This hotel was unable to provide that for us. The first night, we tried the air conditioning in the room and found it was only a fan. No worries, we thought, and opened the windows to let in the cool breeze. We were up all night fighting mosquitoes, even after closing the windows, as their were no bug screens. We spoke to the staff about the air conditioning and after an electrician came to look, we were told that the only air conditioning was central and not on at this time of year. We braved the hot, stuffy room for another night, but mosquitoes still were there, resulting in a sweaty night in the stuffy room AND mosquito bites. We asked the next day to change rooms, but were told the only other option was a room with twin bed - for the two of us. Unfortunately this situation ruined our stay.

This was our best hotel experience this year--historic building, classy decor, comfortable king size suite, super accommodating staff, incredible spa, fabulous buffet breakfast and located within reasonable walking distance of many key Almaty sites. If you're staying in Almaty and don't need a name brand high rise, this is the boutique hotel for you!

Hotel room was clean and had most of the things you would need. The mini bar was expensive, but there are local shops so that you can buy your own water, beer, wine etc... The staff were very welcoming and friendly. The hotel is within 20 minutes walk of numerous bars which have a good food and live music. The breakfast was very good- especially the omelettes which you can order. All in all an excellent place to stay.

Lovely hotel in downtown Almaty

I needed a hotel for 16 hours as I waited for a second flight from the airport. I know the Tien Shan from meetings we had held there when I lived in Almaty but I had never stayed there. The staff were extremely nice (and speak English). The hotel is a renovated one and I suspect at one time was Soviet-era with broad hallways and a nice lobby. The room was quiet, clean, comfortable and, it being January, warm. The hotel is in the midst of \"downtown\" Almaty with restaurants, groceries and shopping nearby. It was a lovely stay and I recommend the hotel highly.

Stayed for three days in very pleasant surroundings, close to parks and markets as well as the Orthodox Cathedral that is an astonishing sight in a beautiful setting. Transportation is a bit of a challenge to the tourist as taxis are few and far between. Overall a great experience well worth the visit.

Central Location in Central Asia

The Grand Tien Shan is the upscale branch of the hotel chain in Almaty. The decor is a bit too \"grand\" for my taste, but the location is excellent.

Fantastic Hotel!

I keep coming back to this hotel and it keeps getting better! The staff are so professional and attentive. The level of English is perfect the receptionists cannot help you enough. It is a pleasure to stay here and I always recommend it to my friends.

Excellent long weekend trip

Grand Hotel Tien Shan exceeded our expectations - the hotel is extremely clean, very quiet and in an absolutely superb location opposite a small park with numerous restaurants and shopping nearby. The Spa and Pool facilities are absolutely first-class and very well maintained. The staff were consistently professional and attentive throughout our visit; with most able to speak English. I would certainly recommend this hotel and will be returning again on my next visit to Almaty. A* !

Great hotel in Almaty

This is a super hotel. The interior was nice, clean and comfortable. The staff was very friendly and helpful. All spoke English well and were very eager to help make the stay enjoyable. The included breakfast was great and had a large variety of different items. The lobby cafe was a wonderful idea and provided a fantastic cappuccino. The waitresses and waiters were pleasant and efficient and soon enough knew my room number so I did not need to give it. Help with the taxi to the airport was also a good service. One of the best places I have stayed

Staff is friendly and professional. Prices are adequate. Two things I didn't like:
1. Shower is old
2. Poor tv reception even though the TV set is good

Lovely room service food

I was unfortunately ripped off by a taxi driver upon my arrival. Abzal of front desk tried to comfort me and assisted. I would like to thank him for being so friendly and helpful since other staff at the front desk was like irritated when I told them I was ripped off & asked for assistance.
The room service was very tasty.

For price, location and amenities Grand Hotel Tien Shan (NOT to be confused with hotel Tien Shan) is a pretty nice place.
