Another nice stay at an APA hotel. The room was tiny, the TV was huge...all is right in the world. (But seriously, it would be REALLY nice to be able to access the TV's settings to enable video game mode on an HDMI input; without it, Tears of the Kingdom was making me REALLY motion sick.)

Negatives:
The hotel really doesn't care when you'll be out of the room -- they want you to vacate EVERY THREE DAYS FROM 10AM TO 3PM FOR CLEANING. (Emphasis theirs.) Right, sorry...I'll leave. But seriously, capsule hotels often have lounges where people can hang out during that time.
The bathroom was pretty cramped. I'm 179cm tall, putting me at \"the average height for a male, world-wide.\" Glad I'm no taller.
It was a bit awkward having to pass by the front desk to get to the vending machine.
A second \"actual\" pillow would be a nice option.

Neutral:
There was a \"2nd door\" leading out the street, when you exited near the elevators (which I did, nearly every time); in between those two doors, you could look up and see sky. It was a bit ridiculous, every time.

Positives:
I hardly saw anyone but cleaning staff, which is a plus (for me).
The bed was pretty darn comfortable.
The electric outlet placement was \"convenient enough.\"
Mini-fridge, clothes-refreshing spray, etc.
The toilet and the shower were warm and inviting.
The coin laundry cost me a total of 700 yen, took 2.5hrs and got my clothes clean and nice-and-dry. Slow but steady!

Keep the stays cheap and yes: I'll be back!

There are many charging port, which is very convenient. There is a public onsen to soak off the day. Provided the yukata as well. Security seems good, as only guests with access card can take the elevator. A short walk (10min) from shopping area.

Parking is a distance away with a partnering carpark at 1200yen for a day (2pm to 12pm next day). There are parking nearby for shorter parking durations.

All in all, very nice hotel. Will book rooms from this hotel chain in my next Japan trip.

Don't stay here if you're driving...

Arrived at the hotel and enquired with the front desk on how to enter the car park, but unfortunately there isn't one on-site (there are 2-3 parking bays in front of the hotel which aren't allowed to be used for some reason). The good news is the hotel does have an arrangement with a local carpark. The not so good news is the designated car park is on the wrong side of a one way system and wasted half an hour of our time to park the car. The only other nearby car parks charge significantly more. If you factor in that additional cost, you'd be better off staying elsewhere if you're driving. The hotel itself looks and feels like an APA hotel on the ground floor, some of this branding carries through to the common parts of the building on other floors, but the rest including the rooms, dining area and onsen are pretty shabby and not somewhere you'd choose to stay. Our room smelt mouldy, but there was an air freshening spray we used to mask the smell a little! The bed was comfortable. One staff member in particular was rude to us (very unusual for hotels in Japan), others we met were in training and were a little flustered by having to serve a customer (we didn't mind this so much as everyone has to learn). The other staff were courteous enough. The location is otherwise good within relatively easy walking distance to the main shopping / eating areas in town. I would not choose to stay here again and would think twice before staying in an APA Hotel again based on this experience.

Not a place I would stay again. I’ve stayed in many hotels across Japan (including other APA hotels) and this one was just not up to par, especially for the price. The building is old, the bathroom is old, the room was tiny and the bed was very very hard. It is pretty close to the castle and you can ride the trolley easily from the hotel but I much preferred staying down in the shopping/downtown area for food selection and exploring. It was way over-priced, even for a Friday night accommodation.The staff was very helpful and kind.

I should have known I cannot get a decent room paying such a low price!!!! I thought we could do it just for one night, a quick stay. Regretfully one night was too long and my memory of this room might stay longer than I wanted. After all, we got we paid for. The hotel needs a new carpet and a major renovation.
I have to say the breakfast was good.

Staff needs more training

I understand that staff are not versed in English, but they didn't even make the attempt to understand my request which was to call a golf course and to book a tee time. I think, had the manager been there who I found was fluent in English, there probably would have been no problem, but there were only two ladies when we checked in and while one was trying to help the other shook her head as if telling her not to bother. We stayed at Best Western Kagoshima the next day where the staff's English wasn't much better, but they really took the time to try to understand our needs and accommodate. Also, the bedrooms at APA are EXTREMELY small. So be aware.

We stayed there for one night, were offered a smoking room which was very smelly. The bathroom was extremely small, basically you couldn't really move while you were standing in it. The shower curtain had a bad smell, like it hasn't been dried properly. We stayed in many different hotels in Japan, sorry i've to say it might be the worst, totally wasn't worth for close to USD200 per night.

comfy bed and great location

The room was a bit small however I stayed by myself so it was good enough for a single occupancy. The bed was comfortable. I had a good sleep after been travelling for a few days with a lot of walking. The location is great just a 10 minute walk to Kumamoto Castle and a 5 minute walk to the city centre.

Decent and convenient location

The building itself seemed a bit rundown, but the room was alright. bathroom was small and even a short person like myself thought taking a shower was a bit uncomfortable with the ceiling so low. Walking to the shopping arcade and to Kumamoto Castle was really easy. I would say the location is good and I'm glad the streetcar stop is less than 5 minutes away.

I stayed here for 1 night in march.
The hotel itself is conveniently located in Kumamoto, being right around the corner from a Tram stop and is very close to one of the many night life spots which has everything from restaurants to bars.
The hotel itself is of good standard and the room, albeit quite small, had both a minifridge and an ensuite bathroom with a bathtub.
Room was clean and I especially liked the origami crane the cleaner left on the bed, and staff were friendly and spoke English.
My only issue was that the hotel plays music in the corridors in the morning and this woke me up earlier than I had wanted to get up. Overall the hotel is quite good value for money and the location is excellent, but light sleepers should probably look elsewhere.

Friendly Staff that Goes the Extra Mile

I picked this hotel because it was near the bus terminal. It was not as close as I thought but still only a 7-minute walk. It's also only 7 minutes from Karashimacho where the action is. The few blocks between the hotel to the main road where the tram station is, is quiet. I did not feel unsafe but others may. This will just be a slightly above average hotel if not for the front desk staff who are absolutely wonderful. They did research for me, made reservations and gave perfect directions. By the end of 2 nights there, they felt like friends.

Less than 5 minutes walking distance from a tram station which is about 4 stations away from Kumamoto JR. A quiet neighborhood but there is a shopping arcade within walking distance, with eateries, convenience stores and other shops. One can choose to walk to Kumamoto Castle from the end of the arcade or take a tram ride (about 2 short stations away). There is also an art museum nearby with a small mall next door (with Starbucks, for those who need one). The room was small but clean and the bathroom was very small. Very basic hotel but wifi was available in the rooms, which was definitely a plus point.

The hotel was easy to find because it had another hotel getting build right next to it and you can see the big APA on the top. There was a good breakfast buffet to eat in the morning. We had originally booked 2 rooms, but a big 3 bed room was available, so we got that with the same room charge. It was a big room that we put all of our luggage on the extra bed. As I mentioned the hotel is about a block and a half (5min walk) away from the first arcade (covered shopping area) and that one leads to about 3 more. You can also reach the castle by walking about 10minutes. Overall I would stay here again. Very good valued hotel.

easy to access from tram== about a 40second walk. ive seen small japanese bathtubs, but this one could not accommodate a 4 and and half foot ballarina. also, no safety bar in bathtub. if you are spending more than one night in the city of the grand castle, you may want a bit more amenity, with, of course, a higher price tab.

Good budget hotel for local sights

OK location, very close to streetcar, a few blocks to bus station and shopping arcade, convenience store 1 block away. Neighborhood is sleepy and not much going on unless you hike out to the sights, but it's a good-priced room for sightseeing for a couple of days. Kumamoto castle is maybe a 15-20 minute walk in good weather. Room was clean, service decent, but the bed was hard as stone, not very comfortable. Made good use of the coin laundry during my stay.

It's right by a tram stop, not far at all from Kumamoto Station and close to all the city's sights. The room was clean, the furnishings useful and the laundry facilities sure came in handy. If I had one complaint it's that the beds were rock-hard. Other than that, no complaints! I'd recommend the place.

Approximately 10-15 minute walk to the main shopping district, we paid 1,000 yen per night for our parking space. One thing we have to say is that the corridors along the rooms had NO air-con turned on. It was extremely hot, especially during this summer season. When you expect to find comfort back to your hotel in this heat, what you find is an even hotter corridor. Air-con in the room was also relatively weak. We had to blast the temperature to find it bearable at least. There's this thing about Japan and its electricity savings habits. Not that we dislike it, but some things just have to be done right. Would probably find another hotel next time if we ever come back Kumamoto. The city itself was average, not as vibrant as Kagoshima.

Trip with my Mom and Daughter

This was my mom's first trip to Japan and to Kumamoto prefecture. The hotel was conveniently located near Kumamoto Castle and was easy to get to from the train station and local tram system. Information at train stations were easy as attendants spoke a little english. The hotel was close to a couple of Arcades, which are covered shopping areas that span a good kilometer of walking. Lots of shops and places to eat. Out hotel did not breakfast service, but we were able to find places to eat with no problem. The rooms are small, but this is the norm for Japanese hotels and will pay a premium if you want a standard american sized room. It is a place to sleep and shower, pretty much it.

Good and safe, not too easy to find

The room was clean but small, in line with Japanese standards for this price. Knowledge of English is what you'd expect in Japan: rather little, but some Japanese basics and some gestures did the job. The hotel is three streetcar stops away from the Kumamoto Castle. Finding the hotel was not extremely easy: The hotel is relatively well known in town (at least, so locals told me) and close to a streetcar stop (Keitukomae), but the hotel sign is hard to see from there, so you better take a map with you. Still, I arrived there around 11pm by asking at the train station, on the streetcar and to one rare person I met after getting out, with only Japanese basics learned from a phrasebook.

フロントスタッフの方は全員丁寧な接客で申し分無しです。
室内清掃が酷すぎ、入室時ドレッサーとベッドの間に割れたガラスの粉が散乱、2ミリほどある欠片もありました、即フロントに電話して掃除機て吸い取ってもらいましたが、吸引力の弱いmitaのコードレス、翌日もフロアがキラキラして怖いのでフロントでコロコロを借りて自分で掃除しました。

4泊して室内清掃の無いエコ宿泊にしましたが、3泊すると自動的に掃除が入りますと連絡が有り、外出時に部屋の片付けをして出たが、掃除に入った気配なし、すごい適当だなと思いました。

建物が古いのは仕方が無い事ですが…空いている理由からわかりました。
アパの標準に比べると、特に朝食が貧相で、飲み物の種類は少なく、無果汁ジュースの様な最近見かけない飲み物、牛乳無し、パン食系無し

サクラマチから近く、直進で迷う事なくたどり着けます。
部屋はコンパクトな造りですが、長く留まるわけではないので充分。その代わりにアメニティはかなり良いと思います。
紙コップも1つ1つ包装されているし、丈夫な作りで熱が伝わりにくいのも良いポイントです。

以前も訪問した事がありますが、少しリニューアルされた様です。アパの大浴場は無いですが、相対的に綺麗で快適です。周辺にコンビニ、飲食店が無いので少し歩きます。中央街へは横断歩道２回くらい渡り10分ほどの距離です。

The hotel is near one of those large covered shopping streets and a tram station which will connect you to the train station. The staff was polite and the check in process was easy. サクラマチ（旧交通センター）より程近く、施設内も騒がしくなく静かに過ごせました。
アメニティもフロントで貰うシステムではないのは助かります。
ただ室内着の浴衣がワンサイズなのは大柄な人には厳しそうに思います。はだけるのが気になる人は自分で用意した方が良いかも？
朝食もそこそこの種類があり、連泊でも飽きなかったです。
