The Stay:
The hostel is located on the 2nd floor of a building in an absolute perfect location. It’s a bit older, but the staff keeps it very clean, and the price is great for the area.
The Catch:
Because it's a shared building, we had a bit of a rough time with odors. Neighbors elsewhere in the building were cooking something very strong, and the smell vented directly into our room. It was quite overwhelming at times.
Bottom Line:
If you’re looking for a clean, affordable spot in the heart of the city, this is it, just bring some room spray in case the neighbors are busy in their kitchen!

Everything is perfectly close but not as noisy & busy as Gran Via could be.
Awesome cafeterias (coffee-shops) and bars, alike! Theater is near and, also Impressive Church painted by Barroque Master (Goya used to attend mass there just to look at the ceiling ;-)

This was perfect in an old historic building. Ancient elevator. Wonderful AC and the room was perfectly adequate. Very accommodating staff. Suited our needs perfectly. Don’t miss the church right across from the massive front doors. Could’ve stayed for several days here.

Good location, short walk from Gran Via, street was reasonably quiet at night. Room was adequately sized for 2 beds, bathroom/WC could be a challenge for bigger persons. Good cleanliness, daily cleaning. Shower next door/water was clearly audible. Good WiFi, bed comfortable although mattress is easily movable as loosely set on bed frame. TV was very small with local stations only. AC was fine.

We loved staying here as it was perfectly located in the middle of everything. Staff were friendly and accommodating, and the room was in good shape. However, the shared bathrooms were quite small and uncomfortable to use. If you spend a lot of time in there, would be best to go for the private bathroom option. Thank you for our stay :)

The only positive aspect is the location: close to gran via ( a few hundred metres from metro Callao). The hostal is located on the 2nd floor with lift of a building. The room is extremely small, so are the beds. It was not clean. For the bathroom you have to wait a really long time to get hot water and then you burn yourself. The shower is a really small bathtub. The staff only speaks Spanish, not very friendly. Walls really thin, so you can hear everything from people talking to water running. We had to ask for toilet paper and the staff person asked for our room number.

It’s really close to most of the Plaças. The subway and buses really easy to get to from here and it’s right across an old church. The rooms themselves are ok but they didn’t change the linen at all and we were there for 4nights! They didn’t change the towels until we asked for clean towels. The two ladies who man the reception smoke so the place reeks of cigarettes so badly it’s hard to breathe in the corridors. They have these filthy carpets in the corridors that reek of cigarette smoke. Bathrooms are a health hazard: I’d recommend a private bathroom if you choose to stay here....even then can’t guarantee they’ll clean it. Such a shame because the rooms themselves are airy and tiled so this keeps the cigarette smoke out but it doesn’t seem they enforce the no smoking rule because guests/staff smoked in the bathrooms, the reception area and the guests in the room next to ours smoked and the suffocating cigarette smoke wafted into our room from the balcony.

Excellent position closed by the Via Grande, Shops, restaurants and coffee bars.
The room was cleaned when we arrived however the towels were not changed for 2 days. The Wi-Fi is free but the connection is poor.
The staff was there 24h and they were all absolutely nice and always smiling.
I would totally recommend for a short stay!

The location is very central with good places to eat close by. The hotel is located on the second floor and accessed by buzzzing from street level. There is someone on reception 24hrs per day. The rooms are basic but functional. Plenty of hot water. Good standard of cleanliness. Staff friendly and helpful. Personally I would have preferred a key to access the hotel without having to buzz but this wasn’t a problem. For the price I paid to stay here for three nights, i was very happy with the hotel and it is a great base from which to explore Madrid. As a clean, affordable and functional place to stay with lots of amenities close by then I’d definitely return here.

The receptionist was drunk when I arrived.

It’s actually a residence building’s flat converted to a hotel. The receptionist was drunk when I came and I could not stay because my room was not ensuite. Not a place to stay obviously. The staff was not nice at all when I requested I room with bathroom. Not recommended.

Great location, and price was right

Nice, safe, and clean place, a few blocks from Gran Via and from Chueca, and in Malasana. The price was great too, especially for a room with private bathroom, which is rare in Europe.

I would recommend it to everyone, but be warned that the vast majority of staff does not speak English. I'll be staying there again!

The Hostal is centrally placed, but it is quite basis. However, it is too noisy, with loud talking from the bars, constant fast moving mopeds and for some reason, several visits in the middle of the night by very loud rubbish lorries. After a few nights, we could take no more and paid to move hotel.

I cannot recommend.

The hotel is nice, warm, conveniently located, private bathroom in the room, and has a small elevator to the reception. The service from the staff was fine. The room had a decent size and was very clean. Despite the hotel was warm, I was cold in the room and there were no extra blankets in the closet. There was a light in the patio (where my window faced) all night. And the room next to mine had the TV on super loud all night!! I think the staff should walk around the hallway from time to time to check that and request the customers to be respectful to others. I couldn't get good sleep or rest, despite I was bringing a mask and earplugs. I recommend this hotel only if you're spending a night and really want a bathroom in your room, because according to the rest of hotels in the area, the price is good for that.

I got off to a bad start with a rude welcome from an older gentleman at reception. Not a word of English spoken (luckily I have some basic Spanish or I would have been completely lost) No welcome/Hola/smile, just a card shoved in front of me to fill in personal details (in Spanish). Their website states they speak English & French...

I booked a double room, as my boyfriend was arriving later that night. The gentleman couldn't understand this & barked \"uno, uno!\". The hostel 'base rate' for my room is listed as for TWO guests. When my boyfriend & I arrived home later I was made pay another €10 for the privilege of him staying in our double room each night.

The ladies at reception on other days were friendlier, but still no English spoken. The rooms are decent sized for a hostel but have very basic & with dated furnishings. Hostel is in need of a complete refresh. The windows are obviously original features and it is extremely loud at night time and early morning.

The check-out time is listed as 12:00 on my booking, however it was 11.30am.

Otherwise, great central location in a quiet side street, just a minute from the shops of Gran Via and Callao. The room had a nice view of the church across the street & the cleaning staff were fantastic.

If you have 0 Spanish & the patience to shop around a bit, do it. You'll find far better service and standards and hopefully no hidden extra charges.

Amenities: really none, I stayed 8 nights, but I was ok with what I got.
A microwave in a common area would be really good.
Catholic heaven: from my balcony there were two different Catholic churches within 150 feet . The closest one is only open on Sunday for mass. I enjoyed it

What's important to you?

The hotel is cheap, clean and central, but it reeks of smoke (because the owners smoke up the hallway) and the bars below make enough noise until 6am on a weekend that you will not sleep. My room was ensuite but the TV small; one proprietor was friendly, the other not. You have to buzz in, and leave your key where anyone in the lobby could reach it, so you can't leave anything of value in your room. The hosts could change much of this (not all of it), but they choose not to. If you can pay more, do for more comfort. If you can't, well, at least it's clean and ensuite.

Central location in fun and lively neighborhood

First time in Madrid, very happy with chosen area and hotel.
Hotel stretches across 2nd floor of a beautifully maintained, classic old building. Everyone delightfully friendly. Ones beyond-basic grasp of Spanish and a few smiles went an awfully long way, both in the hotel and everywhere else. I never understand the patronising aggression of reviewers on this site who expect everyone to speak English in other countries and expect to be able to do/eat/order/buy xyz just as they do back home -- you want it to be like Las Vegas, then just go to Las Vegas people.
Yes, the hotel is in a somewhat boisterous, young, fun Malasaña area, so there is often street noise until the early hours. But that's because that's how Madrid works and the area is a warren of narrow little streets with bars and restaurants and independent boutiques, and is in addition very clearly a real neighborhood where people live and families are to be found. One imagine things calm down at night as winter kicks in.
Hotel walls are a bit thin, however, though the person next to me realized their TV volume was a bit loud after not too long.
Rooms have high ceilings and tall, tall windows with shutters and little balconies - the charm is genuine.
Would happily return.

The rooms were clean and and comfortable and even had air condition. I stayed the first night in a quiet room before asking to stay two more nights. The room I was then give had a very nice view of the church but was also very noisy at night because it is an area where many go to bars etc. however, this was not a problem for me at all and I found it to be very comfortable.

A bad hostel in a good location

The hostel is well located, but dank and dirty. The rooms are small, out of date and the bathroom smelled so bad of urine that I simply could not stay there. Sheets were so used that they were frayed and stained. Furthermore, guests are required to leave their room keys in a bee-hive box prior to leaving the building. This is very unsafe since anyone with access to the premises (including other guests) could easily retrieve the keys of a guest and have access to their room and belongings. The staff politely assured me that they're \"always there\" but I noticed that the front desk wasn't always staffed.

All you need! Great Location!

I stayed here with my grandmother. The hostel is on the second level of an apartment building. The building itself is beautiful. Osvaldo was so friendly every time we saw him. There's someone there 24/7 to open the doors for you. Your key only opens your room. The room was totally basic but all you need. Madrid is lovely and you want to be out all day so it's just a place to sleep. There's gorgeous bars and restaurants around. The shopping along the street nearby is amazing. Walk out of the hostel then left then immediately right (heading north) and you'll find amazing restaurants and shops in the local area rather then turning left onto gran via- tourist area, Main Street.
One negative, it is extremely noisy. People in Spain stay up late and since there's bars nearby you can hear them. There's really loud trucks and construction sounds that also go on through the night. This wasn't an issue too much for me as we were so worn out from the day! But if you're a light sleeper this will frustrate you. Perhaps ask for a room to the left from room 12 but you won't get a window necessarily. And you'll want the fresh air.
Main Street gran via is 2 min walk.

Cheap, Clean, Comfortable and Great Location.

Location is great, in the Malasana area of central Madrid. Lots of shops, bars and restaurants in the area and the Metro station only a 5 minute walk away.

Hotel was quite cosy with kind reception staff. One guy in particular who worked the night shifts was very kind and helpful despite speaking very little English. Some of the other staff did speak English however. My room was a double room with an en-suite. Toilet and shower was very clean and fully functional, bedroom was also clean although the mattress was a little on the hard side. This was certainly not a problem though. The room had a tiny balcony which was a nice addition to be able to look outside and let in some fresh air at times. My accommodation was in January meaning it was quite cold outside, however the hotel room was always very warm and comfortable with lots of heat pumping out of the radiator. Room service was also quite good and carried out daily.

Some reviews mentioned noise coming from outside being an issue at night. My room overlooked the street alongside the building with some bars close by. Some degree of noise is to be expected purely because the hotel is situated in a buzzing neighbourhood with a great atmosphere. Outside noise was a bit loud on some nights, particularly on weekends, but I soon got used to it. It was a small price to pay to be in a good location.

I would certainly use this hotel again based on the prime location, competitive room rates, comfort and friendly reception.

Value for Money and Good Location

I stayed here for 2 nights. It's a great place if you're looking to save on money for a decent place in Madrid. The first day was so very noisy because of renovations being done in the building (which looked like good improvements to the ground floor). The first night was terrible. There was a ruckus on the street corner outside that kept from sleeping until past 2-3am. The second night was fine.
The lift is a very narrow one, first of it's kind that I've ever seen! The bathroom was small and shared, but clean and quite decent. The room had towels and soap, which was handy.
Apart from the noise, I think the place was good value for money. I dealt with 3 different people while I was there, and only 1 of them could speak any English. But I got by...
The location is very good. It's only 5 mins walk from \"Gran Via\" road which holds most of the big name shopping stores etc and next to Puerta del Sol, the very heart of Madrid. So, ideal location for shopping, metro, food etc.

cold and noisy!!

The hotel staff were pleasent enough but a combination of an extremly noisy room meant no sleep. complete lack of sound proofing meant no sleep whatsoever and the heating did not work and my room very cold. FAR FAR to noisy. Soundproof please . Also lots of maintenance on the stairway. Dusty and dirty.

O quarto tem um ótimo tamanho e atende as necessidades. O funcionário que fica até às 23:30 é muito simpático.

L hôtel est bien placé et le personnel est agréable... Mais c est bruyant... On entend tout la chambre d à côté comme s il n y avait pas de cloison... 100 euros la nuit c est très exagéré..Le cousin fourni est mou et super fin. Il y a 2 ans ce genre d hôtel était à 40 euros... Je ne recommande pas

Hôtel très bien placé mais bâtiment très ancien et pas du tout insonorisé de l’intérieur ( comme s’il n’y avait que des cloisons )
On entend tous les voisins et toute la nuit même ceux du dessus .
Par contre aucun bruit de l’extérieur !
Bref 3 nuits presque blanches !
