Lovely motel right on the lake. Quiet, comfortable and clean room which was a good size, with good amenities and a nice balcony and lake views.The staff were lovely and very helpful. Taupo is a lovely town with lots of cafes, bars, restaurants. Plenty to do.

Fantastic location for a hotel right on Lake Taupo. Run by a lovely couple, very friendly and helpful. Rooms are large with large windows opening to a wonderful view of the lake. Parking is provided by can be a challenge when hotel is full. Would definitely stay again.

We thought we would pay extra and upgrade to a room with a Lake view. When we got there it was a peek a boo view of the lake with buildings blocking the lake view. They didn’t even put us on the third floor which would be a true lake view. Also the air conditioner was not working at first and brought it to the attention of the front. He came to reset it and it came on but then there was no way to adjust the temperature even set it to 26 C and it was still freezing cold and the noise of it clicking kept us up the first night. We finally turned it off. I would not call this a luxury resort. The lake next to it was not as pretty and clean as Lake Wanaka. Not worth the money.

We are very surprised by the excellent reviews of this hotel.
Positives - the rooms were spacious and very clean
Negatives - rooms were dated, hotel locked main door at 7.30pm then you had to come through side door, springs had gone in the settee, not a proper shower it was in a bath, admit it was a Jacuzzi bath but there were set times you could use the Jacuzzi bath, We did not find the staff that friendly either, also no welcome bottle of water in the room. We had to drive to the Woolworths which was about 1 1/2 miles away to get water. Also no lift we had to lug our heavy suitcase up the stairs.

The windows didnt shut!! All the rubbers were gone so had freezing cold winds blowing straight in, had the heat pump on but that wasnt warming the place up, was on top level room 12.
The pillows were so massive it hurts your neck as they were hard as hell, so ended up using my jumper as a pillow.

The hotel was nice. Room was a good size (we had a one bedroom with sea view). It was a little dated, though. Receptionist was lovely on our check in. The hotel had a swimming pool and hot tub which were fed by geothermal water which made them beautifully hot and very pleasant. Room had cooking facilities which was useful. Hotel is a little bit out of the centre of town, but the uber was only around $10. Parking was on site, again useful. Overall a pleasant stay.

Was a beautiful view from room, room was superb, just something to think about if you are upstairs is the light that was streaming through the glass panel next to door into room, was like day light all night until we both had had enough at 2am....and I needed to exit room and go to foyer and shut main door that was left open at top of stairs, shame really as we were exhausted from our travels and needed the sleep.

Our stay at the Reef was lovely. The location was great for us, and the view of the water from our room was a real treat. The staff were so kind and welcoming. I had breakfast in my room one of the mornings and it was exactly what I wanted and needed. We got an upgrade when we arrived - our room was HUGE. During the day, I didn’t find the room very quiet though. There was a lot of sound transfer from the lobby and from the pool area. I was worried at how this would impact the evening - but by night the room was quiet and there was no sound transfer at all. This wasn’t a negative - but just something to be aware of in case your expectations are silence. The pool and spa were both lovely - great after a long day hiking. We appreciated that laundry available for guest use. On a road trip across the north island, this was something we were looking for in a hotel - so we were grateful it was available. Overall, we had a great stay and would have no hesitations in recommending the Reef or staying here again.
