The staff seemed to care more about taking their smoke breaks than about customer service. No one was there to check out and no place to leave our key. We had to toss it under the hotel desk door. Poor work ethic for the front desk staff. Housekeepers were awesome.
It is conveniently located and near the bus stops.
The other complaint ia the noise at night. There were drunk, loud people under our window every night because of bar near the hotel. It kept us up every night until 3:00 a.m.
Loved the location but would never stay here again.

The property would have been fine if it wasn’t for the unfriendly staff. Very rude. Did not seem to want us there. Consistantly found smoking outside the front entrance. The restaurant Rössl was terrible too. Waited over 1 hour for food when it wasn’t busy and again very rude staff. Not sure if the 2 are connected but they all seem to smoke in the same place at the entrance of the hotel.

The room was quite adequate and clean. Good bed linens but pillows are completely flat.
We were lucky in July, it was not hot. No A/C is a major concern to be aware of in the summer. Otherwise it is an excellent place to stay on a budget. 5 minutes walk to the Old Town!

On the surface this property seems great, and for the most part, is. The staff was kind and helpful, the location was great, and it was easy to check in/out. I am giving this hotel a poor rating because of the noise in its location. Myself and those I stayed with got hardly any sleep due to noise outside of the hotel throughout all hours of the night. Recognize this is not a fault of the hotel, per se but they could reinforce the windows or even warn guests ahead of time. Additionally, for the price paid for the hotel the parking should be free.

Serving as a hotel in the summer months when it isn't a dorm makes this room hard to beat for price. Location is great and the rooms were very clean. We stayed in a room near the front on the second floor so it was a bit loud. Temperatures were very warm during our stay and the lack of air conditioning made it extremely warm at night. Since we are from the states this probably was worse for us but it is something that you need to take into account while traveling. Front desk staff was courteous and helpful. This hotel has its own washer and dryers which was very convenient for us on this long trip. There is not breakfast option although instant coffee (much better than US instant) is available with some cake in the morning.

I found out while I was there that this hotel actually serves as a dorm for University students from October to June). Makes complete sense. The place was very spartan and had zero amenities (toilet paper, two bars of soap and a small flat screen TV propped atop a fridge). There was a bar basically on the premises on the other side that was noisy until the wee hours of the morning.
Having said that, I will give credit where credit is due: excellent location - steps from Linzergrase and the bridges across the river to the old town, the price (extremely reasonable which should have clued me in), and the staff - young University students who were super pleasant and helpful.

I stayed here in July 2022 and loved it! It was not fancy but it was clean and the staff were incredibly friendly. It is in a great central location: close to public transportation and the city center. My only complain is that there was no air conditioning, but that would not be an issue in non-summer months. I would certainly stay here again!

This place was such a great find! Right in the old part of town, with nearby easy parking options and the use of an elevator for my older parents. Restaurants, shops, Mozart’s birthplace are all a few steps away as well as so many of the main sights in Salzburg. They also offer free tea and coffee downstairs all day, and cake in the mornings. Would definitely stay here again!

Great location.

The young man who worked the desk was truly fantastic. He locked our bags up so we could explore the next day before leaving. He was so helpful. The location was fantastic. The restaurants with outside dining were absolutely fantastic in the evenings. The property is a little older, so there will be floor creaking and the rooms are not totally updated, but for us it is part of the nostalgia and did not bother us; however, I was traveling with my son, and we just want a clean room and comfortable bed.

Nice hotel for setting Salzburg's sites

I rented a room with a private bathroom, rather than sharing. The room was nice, the bed comfortable (new, not like makeshift one mentioned on another review here or on Google), and the shower worked well. The staff were helpful and polite at all times. The only downside was some noise on Friday and Saturday nights. I had a room on the back of the hotel, so the noise was coming from the next street back - some music, but mainly annoying drunk people. It was not hot, so I had the windows closed, otherwise it may have prevented me from getting a good night's sleep. The location is very convenient for sites on both sides of the river, and for getting to/from the main train station. I would stay here again, and recommend it to others. If you're a light sleeper, ask if rooms on the from are available, though I am not sure that street is quiet at night.

Super basic room with a communal bathroom, but super cheap which made it worthy. The area is fantastic - you are in the heart of it all and a short walking distance to every site Salzburg has to offer. The only true drawback of staying here is that the cleaning women would start their rounds at 8am and were very noisy. They woke me up both mornings of my stay shouting back and forth at each other in the room next door and in the hall.

Wonderful Budget Option

As a solo female traveler, this is the perfect budget option. I had a single room and, while comfortable, do not expect an extravagant hotel atmosphere. Instead, this hotel feels cozy and rustic. It is easily accessible by public transportation from the airport, and I had no dfficulty finding it simply from studying a map before my trip. Very close to Mozart's residence and Mirabell Gardens, and I travelled as far as the fortress on foot with no difficulty. The front desk staff was wonderful and helpful, and the location felt safe and well-travelled by locals. My only complaint is that the wifi was spotty.

Nice, central location. Inexpensive and basic.

Located in the centre of Salzburg, this is an inexpensive, functional and clean hotel which did the job just fine. The one minor downside is that to access the shower and toilet, one had to venture along the corridor to use the facilities. Nonetheless, at the price offered, this was no big deal. Staff were friendly and courteous and I'd be happy to recommend the hotel to friends.

The best part of this hotel is location. It is on walking distance from some of the attractions like Mozart's birthplace and Salzburg town walk. Staff is wonderful and kind. They always have coffee, tea, and water available, which comes handy when you need to take a little break and relax in the cute outdoor patio. There was not AC, but we really didn't need it. It rained during our stay so the weather was pleasant. I opened the windows at night and it felt so good. We were also able to leave our bags in the storage room after we check out since our bus was leaving until later in the afternoon. I would definitely stay here again!

This hotel is in a great area, centrally located. The room was very clean, if a bit plain. The hotel itself is nice. There are tables in a courtyard where you can consume your own food and drinks. There are also multiple restaurants right there and bakeries to get breakfast. A grocery store is also only a couple walking minutes away.
The only downside: a house (hotel) in the back of the hotel was being remodeled, so I got real noisy. Whenever that remodel is done, it is a quiet neighborhood.

The thing that makes the Hotel Schwarzes Rössl great is the staff. They are friendly and very helpful. You can't beat the location. When you walk out the door your are literally steps from the historic center of Salzburg. The rooms are utilitarian. They serve the purpose of providing a comfortable bed with no frills.

Great hotel, great neighborhood, great value

Really great place. Courteous staff, the room was super clean and modern, and the location could not be beat. Many great restaurants in the area, lovely shops, and really the best bits of Salzburg, without being across the river into the town. A couple of things to make note of (minor, but still, good to know): they don't have hair dryers or shampoo. Also, the soap is lame. Again, these are minor things, but good to know. The most important, however, is there is NO air conditioning. Europe has been having an unusually hot summer, and closing the windows and blinds at night, to block out the street noise made the room almost unbearably hot. I would think fall or spring would be an amazing time to visit. I'd stay here again, any time...

Not a comfortable nights sleep

I chose this hotel for two reasons, first was location, second was price. The location was great and the price was competitive, however this was not a comfortable place to stay.

The rooms were far too hot, there is no air con and simple things like electric fans that would have made a difference were not available. Even with the window open there was little change in temperature.

To make things worse, there are a lot of bars with outside seating outside the hotel, these do not seem to pack up and go quiet to the early hours of the morning. Then deliveries and rubbish trucks seems to start driving round from about 0600 adding to the noise.

I would not stay here again in the summer, although if the price was right I might consider it for a winter stay.

Location was fantastic. Rooms were very clean, wifi was good and breakfast was typical. Few extras (ie. no soap or shampoo in the rooms) but a great place to stay for the price. You step out of your hotel onto a nice pedestrian street with a fountain and several cafe. Minutes from the river and Mozart Platz.

I stayed during a hot summer week. Not the best place to stay during the summer especially if the weather is hot.

Pros: Free Wi-Fi , great location. The price as appropriate for what I paid. Room was clean.

Cons: Rooms had no fans; were very hot during a warm summer week. It's also difficult to sleep at night when you hear people talking in the middle of the night in the courtyard entering the hotel (along with all the nightclubs/restaurants in the vicinity). Smokers (from the courtyard) having their smoke wift up into the rooms.

Overall, I thought the place was OK.

Dirty and Noisy, Do Not Stay Here

Hotel Schwarzes Rossl is awful. The floors are scratched, the walls are so dirty and the furniture is old and creaky. The pillows are thin and uncomfortable and the mattress is unbearable. During our stay someone staying at the hotel kept slamming their door, we told the front desk but they couldn't do anything about it. There is no sound proofing at all. We did not sleep during our two night stay. Do yourself a favor and avoid this hotel.

As many people erote before it is too noisy at night, you cam hear everything from the bars and people passing by, even with the windows closed! So no good night sleep! Other than that it was great!

The room was nice, huge bed for a European room. The toiletries they say they offer include one bar of soap so tiny you can pretty much use it to wash one leg! The front desk was pleasant but the cleaners were horrible. Check out was at noon but they were knocking on my door starting at 8am! No sleeping at this place. The location was decent for walking in the city but I am glad I only stayed one night!

The hotel does a high volume clientele through the summer. The hotel is in a great location on a pedestrian walkway with shops and restaurants right outside the door. The walls are thin and you hear a lot of the outdoor noises and indoor movement late at night of people dining and partying outside as well as in the very early morning hours of trucks making deliveries and garbage trucks picking up trash. I think because the turnover of the rooms is quick, the cleaning of them is very mediocre. I could tell the room was not swept or mopped in days, maybe weeks as there was an accumulation of hair, dust, lint collecting along the wall and the floorboards. This was also evident in the shared bathroom. Walls and floors were marked up from luggage and dirty handprints on the white walls. It doesn't take too much to remove them, but again, it looks like an accumulation from the summer hotel traffic. Not sure I'd recommend the hotel. I'd tell others to shop around first.

Quaint little hotel with nice hardwood floors. The beds were pretty hard. Apparently there was a festival during our stay and our room was above a bar. Loud bass sounds rumbled through the room until 3am. Wireless was not fantastic and the public area was a little smokey. Quick walk to the historic parts of Salzburg. Would stay again as long as it was not during a festival.

Adequate Hotel in a great location

We stayed here for two nights while we were visiting Salzburg. The hotel is in a very convenient location in the heart of the city and also within walking distance of the train station. Our room was spacious and fairly comfortable other than the fact I found the mattress to be too hard. The restaurant next door provides a nice continental breakfast that is free to hotel patrons. Wi fi is only available in the lobby.

The hotel is in an excellent location.

The night staff was great. The day guy didn't seem to really want to be there. The bed was poor. The so called mattress was not comfortable and the bed frame made lots of noise any time the bed moved even slightly. All in all, I would stay at the hotel again based on its location, price and friendly staff.

Staff & location couldn't have been better. We really liked staying here!

This is a dormitory being used as a hotel in the off-season. That said, it's a REALLY nice dorm and the location is fantastic! Perfect even! Our room was large, quiet, had nice linins and a very nice bathroom. There was no sense of any smoking in the room, but there was definitely a permeating amount of current smoke in the lobby and higher floors that you could almost feel in the room. That was my only negative.
Staff spoke English, were friendly and helpful. The breakfast was extremely basic but fine, and the coffee was excellent!

it's a great place seriously, close to the train station and all the sites. Very clean and comfy . the only thing is if you want a luxury hotel this is not the place but if you are looking for a good cozy place, close to everything this is a place. The staff are supper nice and friendly, and everything for me was supper although it had one star, my first one star experience was great !!! As a traveler having been to Salzburg numerous times, this hotel was the best combination of price/location I have yet to find. The breakfast is as the next door restaurant (IceZeit) and is fine, but the 5 minute walk to the center of the Alt Stadt, Festspielehauses, transport and its walkable distance from the Hauptbahnhof make it ideal!
Many rooms have attached WC/Shower, however I opted not to have one of these and never saw another soul use the communal facilities (single/private shower/toilet).
The staff are very helpful and multilingual. Try to get a room on the front-facing street (Priesterhausgasse) as there is a noisy bar on the back that rocks late into the night and may keep you up.
Some of the better restaurants (pricing and food) are found on this side of the Salzach and are very close to this hotel: Alter Fuchs etc.

OK for budget travellers

Having seen reviews about noise from an adjoining music pub and smoke pollution from staff and guests drifting into the hotel and rooms, I had some trepidation about booking but was won over by price/location. Maybe I was lucky but, with a room away from the music pub side of the hotel, I did not have noise problems. Yes, there was smoke from the smokers sitting outside the hotel, but it did not enter my first floor room which had both an external and internal door. Location was good and staff helpful. Fridge in room, but it had not been cleaned.

Downtown Location Convenient

Situated within walking distance to many downtown sights. No parking nearby - suggested 10 minute walk for parking at 13 euros per day. Very well maintained for an old hotel, and even has an elevator. View from our room was nothing special. Front desk staff speaks great English, and was always very helpful and cheerful. Internet only works in the main floor lobby & lounge area. The hotel was was nice for the price, as long as you understand the accomodations in advance.

Good place to stay in Fùssen

The hotel is in a wonderful area and the room and public areas were very beautiful and clean. The only complaint I had was that no one ever seemed to be at the reception desk, and when they were, they were not very friendly, kind, or helpful. That was a little inconvenient when I had questions or wanted to check in/out. Breakfast was incredible, which plenty to eat and lots of options to suit different tastes. Overall, a very pleasant stay!

OK place to stay.

I really cant knock the staff or the hotel itself. Pretty plain - but clean.It did include breakfast and wifi. Atmosphere was more like that of a hostel. It was comfortable just had a bad experience with noise coming from a rowdy group below us and later on the street. As far as what I paid it was not the value comparable to other hotels I stayed in while in Europe or Salzburg for that matter.

Really close to the old town. The staff is really helpful, but they all smoke in the lobby, the only place where you can go online. Poor breakfast buffet, and they will charge you extra for the eggs.

Perfect loaction right next to all the main Salzburg sights while still being close enough to the train station.
The room was cheap, clean, and very nice with beautiful carved wood furniture. The breakfast was great and held in a fancy cafe next door.
The only down sides to this hotel are that it can be slightly hard to find when you first arrive, needs more hair dryers for check out, and is only open july-sept
I would highly recommend staying here

pleased that the hotel was easz to find from the train station, excellent location for someone without a vehicle. a bit noisey in the earlz mornings with garbage pick up etc and the onlz negative would be the hotel staff smoking in a room just off reception. the smoke drifted up the stairs however you just have to close the hallwaz doors to eliminate the problem. free computer access on the 1st floor plus wifi at the reception. breakfast was the same each morning, a bit boring after the first couple of mornings. overall, good stay, would stay again.

Great for younger travelers, clean and comfortable

We had a lovely stay at this hotel. It is an easy walk to Schloss Mirabell or over the bridge into the Altstadt. Reception speaks English and is very accommodating. The hotel looks freshly painted and is very clean, with nice facilities. Our only detractor was the construction going on across the street during our stay in Sept 2011, but it didn't disturb our sleep. Also there is usually a group of friendly students hanging out in the lounge at night if you are in the mood for company.

Hotel Schwarzes Roessl- very clean and cheap hotel

Good for people on budget

The hotel was bit bare bones but that certainly is not problem for me. No television in the room and WiFi only in one room on the first floor. Everything you need in a hotel was there and the breakfasts were excellent and included in the price of the hotel. The biggest problem was noise. There were some extremely lively, loud young people out every night, apparently under my window. Furthermore, Salzburgers seem to start their working day round 6:00-6:30 so things were only quiet between midnight and 6:00 in the morning. It was not problem for me because I take earplugs when I travel but other guests complained. Nevertheless, I would return happily to this hotel if I ever return to Salzburg.

Schwarzes Roessl in Salzburg

The best part of staying at this neat, basic, tourist-friendly place, with its friendly staff, was its convenience to the Linzergasse leading to Old Salzburg just across the big pedestrian bridge. My room was neat and clean although the bathroom did not have shampoo, and nobody could tell me whether the promised WiFi actually would work in my room (it didn't). The worst part was the lack of air conditioning. Guests had to keep their windows open, in some of the hottest weather Salzburg has ever experienced (late August 2010), and this meant that late-night noise from rowdy people coming out of nearby bars came right into the room. This is not an area of town for folks who sleep lightly! I would still recommend the Schwarzes Roessl for travelers on a budget but they should note the downside.

Hotel Schwarzes Roessl in Salzburg

This hotel is an overpriced dump. When we arrived the bathroom had not been cleaned. Several of the bathroom fixtures were not functioning. The bathroom floor tiles were cracked and not properly sealed to the floor. The bathroom itself was the size of a closet. The mattresses were hard as rocks.
The worse thing about the hotel was the fact that it was situated directly next to a night club. This night club played blaring music from 10PM until 2AM every night. Our hotel room literally shook from the noise. This made it impossible to sleep.
The best thing about the hotel was its location which is close to the center of Salzburg. This however did not compensate for the overwhelming terrible aspects of this hotel.

Loved it!

This hotel was wonderful. We had a shared bathroom, but it was always open and it was spotless! The rooms had sinks and mirrors in them, so we didn't even need the bathroom all that much. The rooms were beautiful and spotless. The location was great - it was an easy walk to the aldstadt, and a moderate but definitely doable walk to the train station. The best thing was the delicious breakfast buffet that was included. My only complaint was that there wasn't a public computer with internet access (I'm not sure if they had wireless, because we didn't bring laptops).

El Edificio y la recepción son bastante bonitos, pero no corresponden con los cuartos, que son muy austeros, parecen de refugio alpino; el precio se me hizo muy alto, tomando en cuenta además, que no incluye desayuno y solo hay café soluble disponible en el piso de abajo…si regreso a Saltzburgo buscaría otra opción

Book this Ho(s)tel you would like to pay over 70 Euros for a disgraceful single room full of spider webs with no bathroom, no breakfast, no air conditioning.

Wenn man nur zu Fuß die Stadt erkunden möchte ist das Hotel super. Leider braucht das Badezimmer mal eine Grundreinigung. Die Betten sind gut und die Kissen nicht zu dick. Parken ist nur in ca. 500 Metern im Parkhaus möglich. Für den Preis hätte ich mehr erwartet.
