We booked this for my partners birthday, & we stayed in the garden spa suites. We had the best time ever, everything was so well thought out by staff, and we felt like royalty the whole time we stayed here. The staff made so many accommodations that made our stay so special, and we will 100% be returning for every special occasion now. The cinema room, the pool table, the spa/pool, the hotel room, the dinner (was outstanding), the staff, the breakfast - nothing fell short of perfection.

Good stuff first: The hotel is beautiful and in a gorgeous setting. The rooms are spacious and nicely decorated. The staff are fantastic. The spa is nice. The restaurant is very good.

Our room was cold. As far as I could tell, it didn't have central heating at all. When we checked in at 16:30 the concierge noticed this and said she'd look into it. When we came back to the room at 19:00 it was still cold, so we raised this with front desk and they said they'd sort it. When we came back again at 22:00 we found there was a small heater in place, doing very little, and that the room was still cold. We phoned the front desk and got a second, larger heater added, which finally brought the room up to a sensible temperature. So, fine, fixed. Just... odd.

Then, breakfast was ok, but very slow. I waited about an hour for the cooked breakfast they offered when I arrived in the restaurant. Again, staff were lovely and apologetic, but this is weird.

I had a good time! This is a nice place! But it's a fairly expensive hotel - it's supposed to be nice. Meanwhile, these oversights detract from the experience.

Excellent but with minor niggles.

Overall a lovely overnight stay but with a few minor operational niggles taking a little of the shine off.
Room was lovely, spacious, clean and all the staff we interacted with throughout stay were very pleasant and well trained, and seemed like they cared. Food was very nice and in fact one of the party said it was the best dinner he had had in any Scottish hotel of this type. Overall we were talking about a return sometime.

Staff very friendly. Rooms beautifully decorated but not without issues. We asked to move rooms due to various issues. Some are underground with an eye level view of the car park!
Breakfast chaotic, tables not cleared quickly and took ages to get hot drinks and take orders.
Too expensive for everything not to be perfect.

Internal passages were rearranged making access to our room difficult. Staff coped well with this and were universally polite, courteous and professional.

OK - nothing special

Hotel itself looks nice and surroundings are lovely. Generally the hotel is very run down and in need of refurbishment which is currently in the works on some part of the hotel. Check in is 4pm, we showed up to the hotel just before 6pm and were asked to go and sit in the hotel lounge until someone came and got us. No one appeared so we went back to check what was happening over an hour later and other guests who had arrived after us were being checked in. This was after 7pm - there was no apology or explanation as to what had happened to cause the delay. Room was spacious and well equipped, however it was far too warm and there was no way to turn off the radiators. We had breakfast included in our stay which was OK. During breakfast we had to leave as there was a fire alarm, which can’t be helped and all guests were evacuated and directed to the golf club house. I’d say overall the place is nice, nothing special and overpriced for the service we received during our stay.

Our first room was a fair distance underground with no views in a modern building which could only be accessed through spa reception. Very odd considering we booked to stay in a castle. Changed rooms for a price to main castle. Grand room with 4 poster but on closer inspection carpet was full of holes. Dead insect on bed. No coffee machine. No minibar. Old and tired decor.
Had our small dog as classed as dog friendly. Not allowed in restaurant. Not allowed in bar. Only allowed in far corner of lounge and to add insult to injury charged £50 to have her. You woukdnt know she was there! Also jotel under huge refurb which made place dusty and access was confusing due to rooms and corridors being cut off. Didnt know this before. No messages about it.
The positives are- the staff. All very professional especially waiting staff. The spa and pool was very nice. The outside area is beautiful. The lounge is stunning. The food was excellent. Lovely ambience in the evening.
My husband raised our issues on departure and this was well received and professionally handled. We would definitely come back - without the dog and after the refurb is done.

We stayed at Mar Hall for one evening at the beginning of our road trip and the staff at the hotel were excellent, really helpful and accommodating. The hotel itself however, whilst in a beautiful location, really isn’t worthy of 5 stars yet. There is extensive renovation work happening which looks great, but the rooms and finishes are currently quite tired and unfortunately weren’t what we were expecting. We would definitely stay here again, but for those expecting a luxury experience, it isn’t quite there yet.

Great place and location near the airport but wouldn’t know it. Grounds are great for walking. Food and bar were all good. The beds are comfy and clean. It is under remodeling and general construction. Lots of rain the whole time so we could not play golf. Our room had a few remodeling needs but I am sure they are on the list since it seems to be a thorough overhaul. Still a “castle” or manor house experience.

Great stay here, as a base for a buddies golf trip - watching the Open in Troon and playing in the area. Had what we think were refurbished rooms at the spa end. Rooms spacious and well cleaned. Gym and spa facilities top quality. Staff excellent. Breakfast terrific. And cracking views in a beautiful setting. We didn't play the hotel golf course. From other reviews it sounds like the grandeur had faded recently. If so, this place is on the up again.

The hotel is nice, room was very big and comfortable for the price, leisure center is new with a large swimming pool. Value for money was excellent overall.

Great relaxing trip with my friend, used the leisure facilities which were OK but a pity you can't use the jacuzzi outside unless you're booking in for spa treatments. Had a lovely twin room in the main building which was really nice: plenty of space and the bed was comfy and bed linens were good quality.
Breakfast was excellent with hot and cold options.

The luxury lodge is anything but luxury. It looks like a care home!! There's meant to be a hot tub; however, this didn't work and had leaves all over the floor along with broken tiles. The front door is broken and extremely dirty. The window at the front of the property is broken. The bedrooms are the best part of the property. However, they really need some serious TLC!! Simple things like a lick of paint would go a long way. The couch in the living area is bowed in the middle and is so uncomfortable. We had to take chairs in from the bedroom. The chair at the breakfast table is broken. The oven is absolutely disgusting and there wasn't even a grill pan to cook bacon. There's not even a tin opener. The lodge is meant to sleep 10 people, yet there's not facilities in the lodge to accommodate this amount. There's only 4 mugs, for example. We paid a lot of money for this lodge, which was for my son's 21st birthday and to say we were disappointed would be an understatement. We complained at reception but nothing was done. They did put mints on our pillow when we were at dinner, really!! On the positive side, the meal at the restaurant was lovely. It would have been a nice gesture if we had been offered some kind of discount on this. Instead, when we checked out they tried to charge us again for breakfast. This seriously is not worth the money. If you want a luxury lodge, don't go here.

Lovely hotel staff were lovely at reception and restaurant the young girl at spa was very helpful & friendly.
Food was incredible in the restaurant and the service is exactly as you would expect from this hotel.
Looks like refurb still ongoing within spa/pool area and the potential is incredible.
Changing rooms need to be managed more, no towels unless you ask. Some Robes available, no slippers lockers in mens dont work. Broken locks on toilet doors.
No signage anywhere for spa, changing rooms, gym or swimming pool.

Left and went to check in at reception only to be persued through the grand hall and accused of not paying our drinks! Fabulous location with stunning views across the Clyde. Stayed overnight before a hospital appointment for my elderly mother at the Golden Jubilee Hospital. Only 12 minutes away across the Erskine Bridge. The staff did everything they could to support our needs. A fabulous accessible room, friendly service and lovely food. The hotel public areas are spectacular examples of Victorian architecture and design. The hotel is at the beginning of a refurbishment and will be stunning when finished. My fear is that we will no longer be able to afford it! Thanks to all the staff for helping my Mum feel welcome and relaxed before her hospital appointment.

In need of a massive renovation

The building and views are beautiful, however this unfortunately is not a 5 star hotel anymore.
The potential for this place is immense, however in the current state it does not reflect the hotel description.
Our room was a deluxe double, good size and design superficially looked great. However the handles on the wardrobe were broken off on one side, paint chips off the headboard and wardrobe. Marks on the carpet. The shower doors were broken.
The main issue was the smell of damp throughout the corridors, skirting boards rotting in places and peeled wallpaper and leaks/peeling paint on the ceiling. It did not reflect 5 star luxury.
The staff were lovely and very polite.
I know this hotel has recently been taken over and hopefully the new owners will invest to return it to its former glory.

Great, grand old building. Beautiful but hard to heat in sub zero temperatures, as we found out.

Service great. Did take seriously the one issue we had but no follow up, even though an injury happened (slid in shower)

Food was on the whole good. Less care on breakfast when there was a quiet service.

Think there was a sense this hotel is having a tough time still financially, and would benefit from some money spent on it, and just raising the levels just up a notch. That said, nothing bad and service generally very good

I would absolutely visit again, but during spring summer early autumn.

On arrival the Staff were very friendly.
The room was clean and the bed exceptionally comfortable. Unfortunately the Pool Sauna/Steam Room which was advertised, but we’re inexplicably “Out of Service”. Having spent over a month nursing my terminally I’ll Mum in a Care home and sleeping in a chair by her bed, I was looking forward to relaxing before and after the Funeral. I didn’t get to relax.
Just a nice room with chargeable internet.
In my view due to having “Half the service” I was expecting, I would rate it as only being worth half what I was actually made to pay. Had I known the spa was down, I’d have booked into a Glasgow Hotel with an operational Spa.
A real shame as I had really looked forward to my stay there. 6/10

Rooms were excellent. The palace is gorgeous as are the surroundings. Drove in at dusk and the road in had rabbits everywhere. Magical place.

Restaurant Crew Not The Best

Don't get me wrong; Front desk people are really nice.
Housekeepeing lads are spectacular, too.
HOWEVER, the hotel is apparently is run by unbelievably under-trained kids!!!! Food & beverage crew is, … holy moly!!
During breakfast, I asked for honey, as there was none on the table: the waiter checked every jar on my table to make sure I am right!! Then, brought me one.
They don’t really refill the fruit salad bar, during breakfast. I found the bowl empty every time I was down there.
The other day, there was a pile of used breakfast plates, next to the hot bar. They put them where the clean ones were supposed to be! I was shocked, but kept being positive... Then I realized there is a patern in the restaurant.
‘Short staffing’ has nothing to do with all the issues; you will see bunch of staff gathering at the restaurant reception, busy chatting and being on their cellphones.
I hope they will be a bit more selective when it comes to restaurant crew recruitment.
There was one, and only one, person (a big guy with full beard) who was obviously the credit ti the whole crew, though.

Despite the average overall review the hotel has some nice points. Impressive main building and main public rooms. View from our room was very nice. Room itself was largish, comfortable bed and nice bathroom. Some rather random furniture and fittings. Good toiletries but poor refreshments (only instant coffee and cheap plastic bottled water not replenished during 3 night stay). Swimming pool and gym very good. Location quiet (apart from distant hum of the M8) and fairly convenient to access Glasgow by train from the local station about a 10 min drive, parking free). Away from the main public areas the carpets and general condition looked a bit tired. Food was ok rather than good. Scrambled eggs with breakfast was the high point. Our room wasn’t serviced on one day. Clearly the housekeeper had an accident spilling some liquid and in clearing this up (leaving a wet and dirty pillow case in the room) was distracted from completing the job. Some staff seemed shall we say a little unenthusiastic. A major part of the hotel’s business looks to come from weddings. Very quiet apart from this. At £200 a night I would expect better to be honest and hence only 3 stars.

Not this time it was a junior suit on two levels first thing I noticed was how damp it felt then started to see all the wall very badly mark wallpaper coming appart carpet
stains . Mould all round edges of carpet that made me feel sick….. bed felt really damp due to the dampness in the room

Ended up getting ready to go home early even though it was a 12 o’clock check out
Ive never ever experienced anything like this before room need redecorating new carpets and treating for the disgusting mould

Mar Hall really is special with spectacular views across the Clyde and 249 acres of grounds.
Cristal Restaurant is excellent and maybe not quite fine dining but pretty good and service good also.
Dining in the bar is decent food but service tends to be a bit slower as restaurant seems to take preference over bar for drinks and kitchen orders.

View from our room and around the ground was the highlight of our stay. Hotel is dated, carpets were ruffled and not fitted which could cause a trip hazard. There was M&M sweets on our floor in the bedroom under the table that must have been missed by the cleaner. The rooms needed upgrading, stains on wall, ceiling and carpet. No usb sockets. We telephoned reception at midnight due to the level of noise from room next door, had to leave a message but no-one got back to us. Noise continued to after 3am. So either really noisy guests or poor sound proofing. Dinner was lovely but breakfast was over cooked and not the best. Definitely would not give a 5 star rating.

Hotel is in need of a refurb. Carpets downstairs ripped creased up and a trip hazard throughout.
Breakfast was buffet style and most things were cold and over cooked

we stayed in room 9 and to be honest the room was very tired, the curtains were hanging of the rails they hadn’t been ironed they looked tatty and a mess the shower grout was black and the silicone too, the carpets and chairs had stains on them. I reported the kettle in the room having bare wires which they replaced along with the iron that was faulty and they gave us a new one also with bare wires all the electrical equipment in the room were over due their yearly inspection. On check out I informed the reception of the faults and they didn’t seem interested at all. As a 5 star accommodation it wasn’t worth the rates I have stayed in better 3 star it’s as if f the owner has lost interest in keeping to a high standard. The building and its historic features were lovely and great views over the Clyde but that’s not what I paid to see. So we were a bit disappointed.

Booked this stay in a bit of a hurry after the previous booking had to cancel (Covid strikes again). Was very important to me as I was proposing during the trip.

The staff went out of their way to accommodate me and were wonderful. Food was excellent (the lamb was extraordinary) and rooms were luxurious and spacious.

Would highly recommend to any and all. Hope to return soon and play the golf course. Couldn’t manage it last time.

Ultimate relaxation before lockdown!

The staff were helpful and we felt safe during a pandemic. We received an upgrade to a deluxe room and it was spacious and luxurious. The barman was great and even made us drinks which were not on the drinks menu. I couldn’t visit without having scones in the Grand Hall, they are the best! Looking forward to our next visit!

A beautiful building, full of character and charm.
Only let down was the food, barely warm had to send back very disappointing. Only good night was when the executive chef was on duty. Staff were wonderful , only young but very nice.
