Our stay at Book and Bed was ok, it was quieter than I thought it would be and I did sleep well. The pod itself was really hot. The staff who checked us in were really nice. It is a different experience, however it could do with a scrub and vacuum. There was thick clumps of dust in the corners of the sleeping pod and the shower could have done with a really deep clean. The sinks on the backs of the toilet had grimy marks in them. The lady who checked us out was quite blunt and a bit dismissive.

At first I thought the pods I slept in would be too hot and stuffy. It was a bit of that, but it wasnt bad when you actually lay down and enjoy the space. The space is so unique and there is nothing like it in existence so it was a fun and unique memory for me. They have a corner room if you prefer sleeping with your partner and it looks stunning if you can get it.

Beds get stuffy from no airflow while curtains are closed. Be prepared to sleep hot, especially if on the upper bed. Access to Shinjuku area is really good. Staff was helpful when I needed more towels etc. Some areas and vents are VERY dusty and common area can be messy depending on others. Fun theme though.

If you like being surrounded by books, you'll love it. They also serve coffee and you can sit looking out into the city. It was strange being in a Japanese run accomodation where no one speaks to each other and the staff doesn't speak to people.I felt like the staff was scared to speak to people cause they are scared of speaking English. But once the one staff member knew I could understand Japanese he spoke to me. I wish they could learn basic English since their main clients are foreigners.

My second night, I found that I had not been given a towel as well as no new linen. Like NONE at all. I had to sleep with a comforter and pillow with no covers and no sheets. It was so uncomfortable. Wish they had a stack of fresh linen in case of such cases. I finished late before coming back and everyone was obviously sleeping. Lucky for me when I woke up, there was a lady sorting new towels so I could get one.

Also, I felt a little unsafe in the surrounding streets cause there are a lot of streetwalkers at night and early in the morning, it seemed like they were doing their last hour. I felt like I had to watch that I don't become a human trafficking victim.

But if you avoid the night time outside...it is a good place to stay.

The location was very hard to find , even with google maps. It was in a very rough area , trash, prostitution, drugs, alcohol, very sketchy area… once you go up, they do help you check in & everything , the view is nice & the place is cool. It would be a 4/5 BUT it is dirty, foul smells, and the bathrooms & almost every area needs a DEEP clean. Also the mattress is paper thin, so my body would be very sore. Now for the price I paid ($101) for 5 nights , not too shabby.

I am 52 and my son is 21 and we both enjoyed our stay. The staff was very friendly and helpful, each bed was private and the entire place was clean. We didn't ever have an issue getting in a shower or toilet, even with it being fully booked. It was close to the station and plenty around it for fun, convenience, or food. We would definitely stay there again.

Unique hotel for a different experience. Love that it’s at least on a high level for a nice view of Shinjuku when looking through their big wide windows. Lots of artsy books to browse slowly while chilling & eating at the rest area. The cabin rooms are ok. Had to be extra careful not to make any knocks & bumps in there to avoid disturbing the others haha. I got a cabin which I need to climb up to. The handrail is kinda clunky with an exposed screw at the top. The ladder to climb up could be upgraded to a wider step for easy secure stepping for my foot. If you are not fit, make sure to request for a bottom bunk. Climbing up & down is a mini workout 😅 Morning breakfast is nice. For my 1st day, the lady who served me was nice & respectful. On 2nd day, the guy who served me was kinda moody & not that welcoming but the cereal he made for me is thankfully good 😊

Love the Book and Bed concept, staff warm, welcoming and efficient, for a hostel the bed cubbies are quiet and private with solid walls and double curtain, separate men and women bathroom and shower stalls thoroughly cleaned daily, easy luggage storage, cafe had nice offerings, nice places to read, work and windows to look out. Great location near Shinjuku station. Thoroughly enjoyed my stay and look forward to returning!

Je n’ai pas l’habitude de souligner les défauts mais ce soir la ils m’ont plus marqué que d’habitude:

- l’hôtel est globalement correct, la salle principale est chaleureuse et très belle, fidèle aux photos sur les réseaux sociaux qui l’ont fait connaître. Le tout est très conviviale, favorable aux échanges entre les résidents.
- les pièces d’eau ne sont pas en très bonne était, quelques portes serviettes sont cassé, les douches petites et pas au niveau du reste de l’hôtel.
- les cabines sont spacieuses, offrant le confort minimum et nécessaires. Ma capsule situé en hauteur a eu le défaut de laisser passer la lumière au plafond, ce qui n’était ps très optimal pour s’endormir. La ventilation un peu bruyante (et malheureusement des clients bruyant ce soir la ne savant pas éteindre un réveil à 5h30 du matin…)
- le personnel est la plus grosse déception de ma soirée: principalement un jeune homme qui a passé la soirée a s’entraîner à chanter du rap, m’empêchant de passer la soirée tranquille (discuter avant 22h n’est pas un problème, après cette heure ci j’estime qu’il y a la pièce principale plus propice pour faire du bruit par rapport aux couloirs des chambres. Je vous souhaite néanmoins de réussir à percer un jour!).

Malgré toutes ces petites critiques, l’hôtel reste néanmoins un lieu que je recommanderai le temps d’une nuit (avec le masque et les bouchons d’oreille) car enfin: le trouve le prix excessif face aux désagréments rencontrés ce soir la. J’en suis navré.

The main shared area of the hostel is very stylish, with various interesting books to read, and is fully air conditioned. There is 24 hour service so even in the middle of the night someone will be at the counter- there is also a cafe that’s run next to the check-in area, but even if you’re staying at the hostel you’ll need to pay for cafe items. You can get a change of sheets and towel daily if you want. You get a small electronic lock box in your capsule. The bedding is honestly very thin and not very comfortable, but the atmosphere, convenient location, and value make it worth it

Lovely little capsule hostel

Went in May. Bunk was warm but not unbearable, although had no need for the quilt. I found the mattress quite comfortable, and although the compartment was small I was able to move around inside comfortably.

Noise does travel easily between adjacent compartments for those easily disturbed. I fear that on one heavy-drinking night I may have been the snoring disturbance, so bear this in mind.

Showers were great. Staff were highly professional with a great level of English and I loved the breakfast sandwiches.

It felt a lot quieter than most European hostels but it feels like a different crowd. I didn't take advantage of the book aspect but there seemed to be a very reasonable Emglish language selection in addition to Japanese.

Beware!

Beware! This was my second time staying at Book & Bed, my first at Kyoto. How novel, cute, and aesthetic a concept is really the only appealing part.

Capsules/beds themselves are warm with no airflow, barely comfortable, and mine was not clean/had dust in it. Showers also not that clean and leave room for improvement. The service and friendliness of staff was mediocre at best - you make your own bed and clean up after yourself. They really only check you in and make sure a long list of rules is followed.

The location is convenient but in a sketchy party part of the city. Expect to be woken up up to two to three times a night to loudspeakers, cheering, and other party noises outside as well as find puke, garbage, and ladies of the night/promoters on the streets outside. Secondarily, in the hostel expect light and music to be on till midnight and then full lights to be put on again at 7am.

I was really excited to stay in the 'Superior Room' from the photos however there is no door, just a curtain which people mistook for a staff area and put luggage in front of. Weirdly no actual roof which also made the area feel less private/safe. The safe was broken so would recommend bag locks too. There was also alot of noise from the other rooms on both nights we were there, which to be fair can't always be helped but it added to the discomfort we had from this experience.

--cleanliness (especially of bathrooms) was so so

Negatives:
--AC was not great and unlike capsule hotels there are no vents in the bunks, leading to what was a hot and stuffy night. I didn't use any blanket and I was still too hot.
--Mattress was uncomfortable.
--There are no lockers. Granted I've never had anything of mine stolen in Japan but it would be nice to have the peace of mind, plus lockers are standard in hostels anyway.

I'm glad I stayed here for a night but I probably wouldn't rebook. Many capsule hotels I've stayed in are cheaper, have better amenities, cleanliness, and working AC.

The vibe of the hostel is ideal for a book-lover.
Although most of the books are in Japanese, which as a tourist who don't know Japanese find difficult to read one, you can still see a general theme through the book choices. It can be seen that they had really pay effort in creating an environment where you can 'stay with books'. Staffs are very helpful as well.

The location is good if you’re in Tokyo for the night life. The Book and Bed Cafe is cute but the hostel is not great. The majority of the hostel area is just plain plywood, the mattresses are so thin that when laying on my side my hip could feel the plywood beneath, and the sleeping pods were SO hot. The bathrooms were pretty dirty.

Compared to the Osaka counterpart, this hostel leaves much to be desired.

You also can’t beat the price in that area of Shinjuku. You’re in walking distance to a million great things. The only drawback is obviously the space for sleeping and storing your stuff. It’s small and there’s not a lot of room for your luggage. The shared bathroom was pretty clean for the most part, but it’s still a shared bathroom. For the price and for the experience and for location, I definitely recommend. You aren’t going to be the most comfy you’ve ever been, but that’s ok!

The place looks like it hasn’t been cleaned for a long time. There’s dust everywhere. Dust underneath the bed is piled up, its itchy and makes u sneeze all the time. The books are dusty too, imagine breathing dust with book smell.

Its a bit noisy too, u can hear all movements from top or next beds.

We already miss our hotel

I had stayed in Book and Bed Ikebokuro before and I already loved it. This time I’ve returned with my girlfriend and we booked a double room. We were surprised that the room has high ceiling and an amazing view of Shinjuku through two glass walls. It’s very comfortable to sleep in, and even with just one curtain to block you from the common area, we felt pretty private inside. The staff were as great and helpful as last time. The books and magazines had many great collections! The only thing I would hope it to be improved is that some fellow travelers have their cases stuffed in the hallway. It’s not very nice and for safety reasons the staff should reinforce it. Also some travelers didn’t understand the importance of keeping quiet, although the hotel kindly provides earplugs. It’s a great place to stay not just for budget reason. I would recommend this place to any young ones traveling to Tokyo.

Convenient location, friendly staff. But I think the common/room area needs better ventilation. The temperature feels ok in common area, but the room can get very stuffy and warm. However, the moment you walk into the bathroom, it's way too cold.
Someone near my room had cold/flu when I arrive. She coughed all night, and I caught cold the next day. I stayed for 3 days, and there's way more people coughing and sneezing when I leave than when I arrive. Maybe it's just my bad luck, but I really think more ventilation in common/room area would help.

There is a hostel decorated into a book-cafe at the 8/F in Shinjuku. Need spend time to find but it is so famous. That would not too difficult to find out. If they provide clothes washing service that would be excellent!

easy and safe capsule hotel for solo travelers

I stayed one night on my travels through Japan, and I thought the cafe and ambiance of Book + Bed were awesome, and as a female solo traveler, I felt very safe staying there. The capsules were a little bare bones but I did not have trouble sleeping. A little hard in my back \"alleyway\" of capsules to get to my upper bunk with my things, but otherwise I was pretty comfortable inside the capsule.

There was no AC or fan inside the capsule, but I found the temperature to be agreeable, as the outer room was air conditioned. The bed slippers and toilet amenities met my needs. I opted to pay ahead for breakfast I thought it was pretty good, but they were out of the charcoal latte drink that I had wanted. The banana latte was still good. I had my luggage stored for my day of touring after checking out, and it was easy to retrieve when I came back.

Nice atmosphere, quaint hotel, very relaxed. May be difficult for some people to access top bunks, need to ask/pay for amenities like towels etc

Loved staying here!

People who are working here are very hospitable and fun! They were very kind as well and answered all my questions that I had to navigate around the city. Also the accommodations were very good. Had a pleasant staying overall. Thanks for the amazing service!

Cool, cosy hostel

Super cool place for book lovers! Staff were friendly.

However, if you’re a light sleeper, this place is not for you. Also note that there isn’t any secure place to store your luggage; you just leave it outside your capsule.

Great and convenient location. The location is high up and away from street noise.
Despite the shared space, guests are polite and considerate about noise.

Cool Book Shop+Cafe Vibes

As a book lover, this place was perfect. They even randomly select a book and place it in your capsule. You can bring your own, of course, or pick something from there. It had a book shop/cafe vibe with modern embellishments. I felt chic even though I'm sooo not. The music, the couches, the calm - it was excellent. I will definitely return.

Even if you aren't really into books (or magazines since they had those too), it's an objectively good option. The location is good, I felt safe (this is Japan anyway), the wifi was solid, it's clean, they offer toiletries, and it's reasonably priced. You can only extend two hours, but late check out is possible. I didn't try out the cafe part, so I can't comment on the food offerings, but you'll be fine no matter what. The hotel is located near several convenience stores and restaurants with various offerings.

Unique experience! Everything was super cool. Space/cubby was comfortable. Expect a bit of noise because you are in a wooden box that is like a speaker box. Shared bathrooms are like dorm living. You should try it at least once. It was nice.

This hostel is brilliant! So close to Shinjuku Station, and the atmosphere is like no other hostel. The staff are wonderful, they all go out of their way to be accommodating. The communal area is a book lovers dream - the concept has produced such a great vibe, and there’s a lounge area by the huge windows where you can enjoy a book with a great view (and a coffee from the trendy cafe at the front desk). The bunks are very private, I didn’t feel confined in any sense. Plenty of room for your things and there’s a generous sized safe in each bunk. I’m so happy I chose to stay here, what a wonderful experience.
