We stayed at The Olde Bell for one night and we were very kindly given an upgrade to a gorgeous luxury room overlooking the lovely garden. The room was very spacious and nicely decorated with a free standing bath in the room as well as a large walk in shower in the bathroom. The staff were all very friendly, dinner was good and breakfast was fantastic. This is also such a good value historical hotel in a gorgeous village. We will definitely be back - this is our second stay.

I don’t like to leave negative reviews, but this place is certainly deserving of one.

First up, it’s a Best Western, so I went into this with open eyes and a ‘you get what you pay for’ attitude.

Hurley is a beautiful location. This hotel doesn’t match its surroundings. I was in room 30 and the biggest issue is noise and cold drafts.

The windows are thin framed and single glazed. The windows do not close properly and, weirdly, the biggest problem stems from the hinged side of the window having a gap with the frame almost an inch wide. The hotel had attempted to insert foam in the gap for one window. The others were just like living half in the car park and half in the hotel. Ironically, of the 6 windows in the room, only one would open.

The room itself has the pub one side and the carp park on the other. The room is immediately adjacent to the road. Thankfully, the road isn’t too busy at night, but there is a lot of traffic during the day.

As with most Best Westerns, the furnishings are very tired. The room was very dusty. The electrics had malfunctioned. One of the two lights didn’t work and various plug sockets didn’t have a working electricity supply. Kettle didn’t work.

Noise from the other rooms and car park was excessive to say the least and particularly when the pub closed.

As a female travelling alone on business the room I was allocated wasn’t suitable as simply didn’t feel safe. It backed on to a dark courtyard off the car park, felt isolated and the door to the room felt rickety. There was literally a flimsy door between a dark courtyard and my bed. I asked to be moved, and a helpful female member of staff gave me the keys to another room within a locked building, which felt a lot safer. However, upon entering the bathroom I found two brown splodges of ‘something’ on the floor. I didn’t touch them but they could have been removed when cleaning. The shower was also unsatisfactory as water only came out of the centre third of the head - making it very hard to wash long hair.
Additionally I found the male staff in the bar to be inappropriate. I ordered a glass of wine and paid, but was surprised to discover it was almost £16! When I asked why it was so expensive (I hadn’t asked for anything specific or special!) he said if I ordered another later on he’d give me ‘local prices.’ When I left to go back to my room, it seemed as though another member of staff shouted my name. I turned around & asked why and the one who shouted disappeared but another just sniggered.

Terrible experience. Will never come back.

The building is beautiful, filled with history. I booked a superior for the bath in the room. I was given a pleasant room in what I think is the original medieval part of the building but the bath was through a cool 'corridor' in the room. However, I spoke to the very assistive staff and they suggested a different room which I was absolutely delighted with! This room was unique, had 2 steps down to the bathroom, had a deep bath in the room, room was spacious but cosy and homely. The bed was very comfortable. The water was very hot, not scolding, but good temp. for a bath. The staff were very accommodating! Brought a radiator to the room for me, down to smallest details, even being short staffed on New Year's. They were also very attentive. Breakfast was good. Buffet of the usual English breakfast items, juice, toast with toppings and continental options. Parking just opposite. Also, lovely little village to take walks. Very pleased! Highly recommend.

Hotel is historic but a little tired, worn carpets and numerous repairs to the plaster walls that had not been sanded or painted. Room was clean and comfortable.

My go to place when I need to stay overnight in the area. Much better than staying at a hotel chain. This is an authentic English pub at its best. Had a great chat with the locals over a pint who are friendly. The breakfast was amazing. I would recommend thoroughly.

We have stayed on numerous occasions but this overnight stay caused us some concern as to the upkeep of the rooms which has declined each visit. Room 15 was allocated and noticed straight away that the window did not shut properly which we reported to reception and the guy attended the room stating he could cover the gap with tape if needed as unfortunately no other rooms were available due to a Wedding. We declined and thought it should be OK as although 29TH November, it was mild and no wind. We left the room and went about our day until we returned later at about 7.30pm. Noticed that there was only one bedside light, then the toilet was in a bad state of cleanliness, the room generally was in a poor state of repair with stains on the carpet, small TV with wires dangling down the wall. Then had a shower and saw a mould on the base and around the window, generally looking like it needed a good clean. More worrying was the temperature went from OK to hot then back to normal!. r

This inn is quaint and the village is lovely. We booked a standard room. One of the reasons we booked this property was that on their website they advertised air conditioned rooms. The room we were given initially was dingy and not air conditioned. We asked at the front desk if we could have an air conditioned room explaining that that is why we booked the hotel. The manager was super nice and said he would be happy to upgrade us. We were out in one of their luxury rooms with a lovely claw foot tub. It was a fantastic stay for us. The breakfast was wonderful. So, if you are booking a luxury room, this is a great place to stay. I don’t think I could say the same for their classic rooms.

Breakfast was a real disappointment it was a Buffet impossible to make a decent cup of Tea as no boiling water. the cover on the serving table was dirty with serving spoons on top . the scrambled egg was uneatable , as was bacon and sausages , we both did not have a cooked breakfast on the two mornings . On the second day my husband asked for a poached egg which excellent . Bed very comfortable, but messy hospitality tray also only one bath towel in bedroom , toilet holder broken , bathroom could have been cleaner .on the whole Staff helpful , but their I.T System seemed a problem at times. Lovely Garden the seating could have been more comfortable ( cushions) would have helped . its a lovely old Hotel but could do with freshening up say Lounge and bar Furniture tired and shabby .Its a shame as Breakfast very poor and having travelled a long distance we feel cheated really.

Lovely old hotel and a great room in the main hotel building. Just a couple of things let it down a little bit. On Saturday lunchtime there was a definite lack of staff and those that were there seemed rushed off their feet, meaning the customer service wasn’t quite what it should have been. When we checked into the room later in the afternoon, the floor was a bit dirty with hairs and dust on it. I spoke to reception and it was dealt with straight away which was a great improvement on the earlier customer service.
Overall i would definitely recommend staying there as it is a beautiful hotel in a lovely village. It just needs a few little tweaks in the way it is run to make it a fantastic place to stay.

Pleasant stay which would have got 5 stars save for some services issues. That said a one night stay in a standard room with breakfast and ample free parking, a 5 minute stroll to the river gives good value for just under £100. Additionally we added an evening meal and the food was good with a decent wine list.

The actual Olde Bell building looks very nice but we were in a building away from the main building. It’s annoying when you book a place that looks great and then you’re stuck in some back building. The building we were in was fine, but at 6am there was an extremely loud humming/rumbling sound that went on for hours. I don’t know if it was the fan from the room next door, or what it was but it woke us up and we couldn’t sleep after because of the terrible noise. I wouldn’t stay there again.

Really great stay, comfy bed, great location and staff wonderful and very welcoming. The breakfast was great except the sausages and black pudding were undercooked and the beans were cold but there was lots of options and plenty to choose from so it was delicious. Room was great but we were only provided with one set of towels and there were 2 of us, rang down to reception several times but no one answered so frustrating, my poor husband hand to using a tiny towel for his shower so not ideal. I definitely recommend staying here especially if you are attending a wedding near by. The locals are all really lovely too.

The hotel is in a beautiful village and a short walk from the river. It is a very old property with great potential, but let down by tired shabby decor, and poor housekeeping. My room had evidence of the previous occupants, a shower that needed descaling, and mould growing in the bathroom. Breakfast was poor with a limited offer. The building and setting is nice but unfortunately the quality of the food is poor, breakfast was a big disappointment, and the cleanliness left something to be desired. One example (of many), we sat at the same table for breakfast the two mornings we stayed. The first morning I noticed a chip on the floor underneath. I thought \"strange they wouldn't have cleaned that from last night.\" But the next morning it was still there, so who knows how long it had been since the floor was cleaned, that chip could have been there for weeks!?

The best thing about the place for us traveling with a small kid, was the huge enclosed garden. Kids could run around and play freely there, which was lovely. But (amongst other things left uncleaned outside) there were tons of old cigarette buts on the ground around all the tables, which was very off putting.

If I were back in the area again on a kid free trip I would not stay here again. If I came back with kids I would consider it, just for the ease of letting them play in the massive garden. I would skip the breakfast on a future trip.

It's a shame, because the historic building is lovely and the staff were pleasant, but the attention to detail in cleanliness, quality of produce and cooking leave a lot to be desired. It could be a really great place to stay if there were improvements in this area, which seems should be feasible considering the prices are standard to high for a countryside pub with accommodation.

My only complaint would be with no air conditioning on one of the warmest days in the year I could not get my room under 26C and that would be in the morning, it was hotter at the end of the day which made it hard to sleep. There was a fan which I used but it was so hot. A small fridge would have been nice to keep some water cool.

Too much of the food was missing from the menu.
Floor in the accommodation needed another sweep/clean.
Must emphasise, the front of house staff are excellent

The historic inn areas are beautiful with much wood and thoughtful touches, furniture and decor combines comfort and aesthetics. The garden is a peaceful haven with lots of space and flowers... and Thames footpath is very close by. The only issue was that our room was not ready on time but the above-and-beyond helpful staff more than made up for the inconvenience and we had a delightful wait in the garden. They do do remarkable service running front desk, bar, gourmet restaurant (the Scarlet Pimpernel could not have asked for a better supper).
Definitely get the breakfast option!

Always good!

Always great staff. Always good food. However you’ve changed your breakfast to self service. Live it but please make sure it’s warm. Recent experience was a cold full English. Otherwise brilliant place to stay

Grand dame. Will it live or die?

Huge amazing rambling property with big company cost cutting evident. Would need a fortune spent to make it in to the place it should be. Every cost corner cut but I believe there may be some signs of life in new recruitment in kitchen. Decent breakfast.
