Room was unbelievably hot with no working AC, overhead fan, or window to open to bring it down to a comfortable temperature. Cracks in my private room’s walls, could hear and SEE people clearly shuffling around in the kitchen / common room through cracks. Left and booked with Hilton instead. Getting my money back through Michie had been impossible despite not staying for any of my trip! Could have worked for someone else but not for me!

The worst property I’ve ever stayed at, can’t believe it’s on Expedia. There is no reception, ur key is an app online which I had to wait an hour outside the place to get when checking in as no one was responding and this key also disabled during my stay meaning I couldn’t get back in and had to wait a further 3 hours for a response to make it work.

No blackout curtains meaning ur room is fully bright by 5/6 am, I was right next to the main door which slammed all night too including people knocking as their online key wouldn’t work. There was also a line of drugs in bathroom which hadn’t been cleaned and blood stains on my pillow we just had to deal with as the person I was emailing didn’t seem to care about. Location is in a dodgy area as well although quite close to city, it is defo not worth saving money compared to properties around imo.

I wouldn't reccomend staying here as a female solo traveler or couple. Although most things are fairly similar to the pictures, it is true that you need to read reviews carefully and know what to look for. There were strange sounds coming from some of the rooms that were somewhat concerning. The lock on the door to our room was not secure. The bathrooms were very well out of shape and provided little to zero privacy. If you plan to shower, bring a bathing suit as there is no curtain with a see-through glass door the second you walk into the bathroom.

The kitchen was not well maintained, and looked as though it had not been cleaned in a long time. The cherry on top of the experience was that although there were no bedbugs, it was apperant the sheets had not been changed since the last guests with hair and old skin in the bed. I have to say that my partner and I arrived late in the night, and left as early as we could.

Spend the extra $30 to pay for safety and clealiness.

I appreciated the staff, I was able to check in early. The room was great. It was clean and very interesting. Location was fantastic, minutes from downtown. The people that stay there were respectful and polite. The place is quite and comfortable.

Property completely misrepresented on the pictures provided
We arrived late night, and place just scary looks completely abandoned, and looks like in the horror movie. We just opened entrance door, and left even not getting into the room itself.
No light inside.
Smells very strange.

We had to find another hotel in the middle of the night.

I called Expedia next morning asking for the full refund. Request was rejected by property owner

Literally impossible to get into the building. No staff onsite. Sketchy behavior, musty, falling apart. Staying at a motel6 in LA was literally a better experience. Didn’t even end up being able to actually stay the night there becuase when we came back from dinner the front door to get in the building wouldn’t unlock. On top of that the police were outside when we got back. Ended up staying somewhere else, came back in the morning to a book propping open the door so luckily we where able to retrieve our belongings, which seemed like ether a total pain or close to impossible at that point. Oh also the staff that is available is only on the phone and have little to no customer service skills. When I told them that there where police outside and we couldn’t get it they told me that they weren’t notified of any security alerts. Lol just don’t stay here

Room had a window on top of entry door that wasn't covered. So you'd effectively get all the light from the corridor into the room.
Showers and toilet on the second floor are avoidable. The ones on the top floor are easier to manage.
Location is not the best but it has great proximity to the city centre and airport. It's cheap for a reason.

Yes, room was clean including the air quality. I am highly sensitive to mold and allergies. Was NOT an issue what so ever. Please keep in mind that this place is a living place of historic significance. The original training center for fireman since 1856!!!. Please dont judge it until you get inside. I love this place; especially because I feel SAFE here. The owner is an amazing and genuine person that is easy to communicate with and does his best to accommodate within his ability.
Area is convenient. Has bus lines right out front. Access to food and convenient store is within a very short walk. . I rebooked immediately solely based on not once feeling uncomfortable. Thanks guys!! Ill stay as long as you'll allow until my new job starts in boston. I am a nurse that has been hired in the dermatology department of brigham and womens.. Ill always keep your place high on y list to stay whenever im in the area

Beware of this place. It’s filthy, chaotic, and has a revolving door of addicts and sex workers wandering in and out at all hours. Some woman was getting it on with multiple Johns right above me, and I have the recording to prove it. You truly get exactly what you pay for and nothing more.

I booked the main-floor room with a private bathroom, which sounded great in theory. In reality, the walls were so thin I could hear every conversation in the hallway, every door slam, and even noise from outside the building. It was like trying to sleep inside a subway station.

To make matters worse, it was the middle of winter, and the room was freezing because the staff forgot to turn the heat on for my unit. The bathroom didn’t help matters: the shower was dirty, and the toilet was even worse. It was so bad I debated whether sitting on it required a tetanus shot.

No one could fix the heating issue, and I got sick of chatting with Karteeni from Indonesia, so I grabbed my belongings in the middle of the night and got the hell out of Dodge. The only thing this hostel delivered successfully was my refund.

Would I recommend this place? Perhaps to an ICE agent.

The room was boiling hot, the sheets and entirety of the room were dirty, the staff was extremely rude and unhelpful. I came back to the building around 10:30 at night and had gotten locked out of the building and with no proper explanation I was told that I couldn’t come back in to at least get my things until check out time in the morning. When I called, the staff member on the phone had accused me of sneaking people in when I was barely ever even in the room, I only used it to store my things and sleep. Since I accidentally didn’t register the one person I was staying with, they requested I register them after checking in by sending their information via email. Even though I did this, they lied about receiving it, and used it as an excuse to take my money. After accusing me of sneaking a group of people in without stating any evidence, let alone showing us, they told us that we were banned and wouldn’t receive a refund WHILE keeping our belongings hostage. We had to get the police involved due to the staff’s incompetence so we could get our things. Besides that really weird chain of events this place is absolutely disgusting. The walls are paper thin and showers and kitchen were dirty. To top it all off the area around the place as well was extremely filthy.

The good: the room was very comfortable and the common room/kitchen area was great. It's affordable compared to the other options in Providence.

The inconvenient: the hostel is not staffed, so it wasn't possible to store my luggage before my 4 PM reservation. The app to access the property didn't work for me, but there was fortunately an employee on site trimming bushes who was able to let me in. I didn't leave the hostel again because I wasn't sure I would be able to get back in. The bathroom I used doesn't lock and the shower stall has frosted-glass style plastic, so there isn't much privacy.

The bad: the neighborhood is not great. I didn't feel unsafe during the day, but if I were a solo female I might have been uncomfortable about arriving or going out after dark. Also, as other commenters have mentioned, there's a club directly underneath the hostel. A long-term guest I asked said it's only been open for a couple of days over the last several months, but a worker who was refurbishing the property was playing salsa music until 6 PM and it sounded like the speaker was located directly under the vent to my room. If the club was open the noise would have been intolerable.

DO NOT STAY HERE

1. The property is located in an area that I did not feel safe to walk around in. Being stared at by numerous large groups of people as they were setting fireworks off outside the building in broad daylight.
2. The hostel is located directed above a nightclub, which is not stated anywhere on the site. This nightclub was booming music all through the evening into the night so loud my floor was shaking and I could not go to sleep even with earplugs in.
3. The place is extremely unclean, from dishes left in the sink with flies everywhere, the bathrooms being disgusting with graffiti everywhere, the showers being so dirty I refused to use them. And finally to my room not even having clean bedsheets. The bed in my room was broken also. With the door lock looking like anyone could break in at any point with one kick.
4. I also did not see any sign of the host at any point despite displaying there was 24 hour service. They also did not respond to me via messages on Expedia despite me declaring concerns in the area

I DONT WANT TO SEE ANYONE HAVE MY EXPERIENCE HERE. BY FAR THE WORST PLACE IVE EVER STAYED.

If you really don't have the money

I arrived, and the room they offered me was full of garbage bags and extra furniture. Luckily, they answered my call and gave me another room, but I was supposed to have a king bed, not a queen. The ceiling light didn't work, so I gathered lamps to light the room. I felt unsafe as a man was sleeping in the shared space and was bothering my friend. The bathroom smells awful, but there was toilet paper by the sink. There is a hole in front of the urinals, which I suspect was an attempt to make a peek hole into the room I was supposed to sleep in. Someone put a fork in the shared kitchen, which attracted 100s of ants to the kitchen, and there were fruit flies around the trash can. It's a very eccentric and interesting room, but it was a bit unsettling. Our first night, we didn't hear anything from the 1st-floor nightclub, so I thought we were safe, but Saturday night, they played music well past 2 am. My friends wanted to get up early to go home for work, but we lost a lot of sleep to the pounding music. It would've been great if we didn't have to get up early, but it's just not the right place for a hostel. I looked in and there were only 3 people in the nightclub. Frustrating that I lost sleep over it. The area is nice, 20-30 min walk to the canal and close to There, There- a great sandwich from there. The lock on the door made me feel safe, and it was a nice room, aside from the broken light. The towels they provided me were dirst and had bits of rice or something in it.

After I spent 45 minutes by phone since there was no staff available at the property, I was able to access the property using a downloaded application and filling out the check-in form for the third time. The room was not at all like any of the pictures on the review. Last night I was kept up till 1 AM by the music from the club directly under my room the vent vents directly from the club to my room. The bathroom and chairs were clean, but half of the bathroom stalls and showers were broken This morning I was charged $charge the deposit that they held an addition to the $$ fee for the room because they claim my smoked. I’ve never smoked in my life. The van disconnected to the club and filled the whole place marijuana vapes I came for Brown university commencement, and this was the cheapest room room within walking distance. What a mistake next time further away and take Ubers.

This is by far the worst place I have ever been at across Europe and the US. Please do yourself a favor and book literally anything else. Expedia was also not the best at advertising the place online (photos do not match!) or providing support after the check in. The room is extremely dirty and smells very bad. Same with the common area and the shared bathroom weren’t cleaned probably in years. Area in unsafe and the front door of the apartment is open 24/7. You can hear other guests from your own room.

Our one night stay at Michie Hostel was nice. There was some confusion about which unit in the building we had rented. When it became apparent that we required more beds, the manager was very accommodating. I would definitely consider staying there again.

A Charmingly Cheap Hostel

My buddy and I came into Providence for a concert and needed a cheap place so we didn't have to drive back.

Price: Our one room with a bunk bed cost us about $33 per person after tax. This is much cheaper than anything in the area as most hotels were around $100 for the night.

Hostel Quality: The building's outside doesn't look good but the inside is nice and clean. Whoever restored the building's interior did well. There's a common area with kitchen and a large table as well as bathroom and shower room.

Area: The immediate neighbor doesn't look the best but its fine as long as you mind your business. Locals and other reviewers say similar. The worst thing we experienced was a homeless man asking for a cigarette. Otherwise, the location is great as its a 15-20 minute walk from downtime Providence. We had no troubles on our drunken stumble back from the bar.

Problems: I only had two problems. First, the morning we were to leave, the bathroom didn't have any toilet paper and since the local stores and restaurants don't have public bathrooms, my friend was forced to buy some. The second problem is that there is a bar directly below the hostel that played loud music until 1 am. I doubt this is a problem most nights but I could see this being a problem if its the weekend and you want to go to bed early.

Overall, if you're looking for a cheap place for 1 or 2 nights, Michie Hostel is perfect. I would stay here again.

We received the wrong room type. The room is insecurely locked. It takes 2 hours for the check in process as the code does not work. We asked for the refund and the front desk took 30 mins to handle then mention to talk with the manager and I never received a call back. The are very irresponsible for helping clients. Everyone basically can get into the building without security as no locker in the front door. We were too afraid to stay in this place so we immediately book different place to stay instead. Terrible experience
