As a historic hotel with relatively good rates, this is not a luxury hotel. Rooms are on smaller side (there are choices in size) towels less fluffy white, floors creaky, most parking is very near on the street. There are lots of pluses....It's well located to the beach and food options, staff is super friendly. There's a very nice public area to sit w wine and cookies in the afternoon, and a garden patio area outside. Enjoy Joghurt w granola an fresh fruit at breakfast. This is a repeat stay place for us.

The building itself is beautiful and historic, and the architecture gives the property a lot of charm. Unfortunately, the actual condition of the hotel does not live up to the “boutique hotel” experience they advertise.

The room showed several issues related to maintenance and cleanliness, including worn carpet, dust accumulation around the windows, peeling wallpaper, stains on the bedding, and damaged fixtures. These details made the room feel poorly maintained.

Another disappointment was the breakfast. It was advertised as a continental breakfast, but it consisted mainly of yogurt and pre-packaged pastries that were simply warmed up.

In addition, we were sold one room category but were given a different one.

Because of these issues, we decided to check out early. To their credit, the staff refunded the night we did not stay, which we appreciated.

With better maintenance and attention to cleanliness, this property could truly live up to its historic charm.

1 block away from shopping/restaurants and a few blocks away from the ocean. The rooms were clean and the staff were kind. There is a large seating area in the lobby and out on the patio. The free glass of wine was a nice touch.

We booked a cottage on Expedia. We have two gripes about our stay. First was that the pictures on Expedia showed a true patio for a cottage that’s on the first floor, but we got an upstairs cottage that just had chairs outside the door. I wouldn’t call it a patio and that’s one of the reasons we booked our room. So that was disappointing. Additionally, the windows are old and don’t have screens and opened at the floor. We had a 18 month old with us and we did put that information on our booking on Expedia, but we could not open the windows. Our toddler could literally fall out of these windows. I would think for liability purposes they would not put a family with small kids in that upstairs cottage. Since there isn’t AC, having the windows open is huge for ventilation and cooling.

However, there were some pros. The bed was very comfortable and it was walking distance to everything. Staff were overall friendly.

This was by far the cutest hotel we stayed in during our recent California trip. We stayed in the third floor in a surprisingly large space. It’s an older hotel (was a boarding house in a past life), but it’s in a quiet neighborhood, close to good restaurants, and a short walk to the beach park. Would absolutely stay here again. The front desk staff was very friendly and helpful.

The best thing I can say about our stay was that the room appeared to have clean linens and the desk clerk was very nice. The room was terribly neglected: bed was visibly lumpy, saggy and old, carpet had folds/bumps in it and did not seem clean, the floor actually had a hole in it, covered by carpet. There was no AC. There were patches in the bathroom wall covered by mismatched paint. The paint overall was worn and this room was TIRED.
I don’t know when the photos on the website were taken but they were not representative of the actual state of the room.

This is a converted old house, so the floorboards are a bit squeaky and plumbing a bit old, but the room was clean and provided the basic necessities. I loved how close it was to the walking trail that took us along the coast and to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. But my favorite amenity has to be the parfait available for breakfast — fresh and absolutely delicious!!!

I’m sharing this review to provide a realistic picture for future guests, as the high price tag (it was $190w/taxes & fees in October for one night) & positive reviews didn’t align with our experience. While I really wanted to appreciate the historic charm, the property felt neglected rather than \"classic.\"

The Positives:

The location is unbeatable—centrally located near the beach, coffee shops, and Main Street. Additionally, the staff was nice and the breakfast pastries & yogurt were a highlight.

The Reality of the Property:

Unfortunately, the maintenance is in a state of visible neglect. Our room featured chipping paint, peeling wallpaper, and carpets that were unacceptably dirty. The towels were so thin and dingy they felt more like rags than hotel linens.

Outside, the \"garden\" was a collection of nearly dead plants and broken fountains, and the greenery at the entrance was noticeably infested with mealybugs, toppled over and in plastic pots.

Final Thought:

Given the premium cost, the lack of basic upkeep was a major letdown. If you are expecting a polished historic stay, just be aware that the current condition of the hotel is quite dilapidated. The pictures on the site were nothing like what I experienced. I am sad to leave such a poor review but feel it necessary to do so. Luckily we were only staying for one night and we arrived late in the evening but this could have ruined our anniversary trip.

At first look, the hotel is very old. The carpet in the room was ancient and needed replacing and the room smelled musty. However, overall the experience was very good with a great breakfast, staff, wine hour and helpfulness when deciding where to eat. It is centrally located and within walking distance to beaches, parks, restaurants and shopping. I would likely stay there again.

Great service, and the room was so cozy and comfortable. Booed the cottage and had the whole unit to ourselves detached from the rest of the hotel, Had a fireplace with a TV and pull out couch. Me and my Fiance loved this stay, definitely a place to stay at in Monterey if you love history and timeless architecture.

The checkin was easy, but the room was in a state of disrepair. One set of blinds had the paint peeling off, another had broken lines so it could not be closed, paint was peeling off the wall in certain places, etc.

The Centrella is a beautiful historic building, and the rooms are well-preserved and charming. It does feel like some corners are being cut in the management, however. Breakfast is minimal, even by Continental breakfast standards. The front desk has very limited hours, and housekeeping was not offering mid-stay service, aside from towel replacements.

The room was clean & an adequate space; the bed is old and can be upgraded; pillows need refreshing too. Large spacious bathroom was good; baseboard heating in winter was nice versus typical foreced air. Turning off the lights in the lobby 9pm is a hardship if one doesn't one to be in their room. The female desk employee working evenings needs customer svc training; unfriendly and abrupt. We did enjoy the one glass of free bubbles or wine ea nite; nice touch with homemade chocolate chip cookies. Hotel in great location to walk to the coastline or a block into restaurants in town.

There is an assigned parking spot for each person so parking was not an issue. Breakfast was OK but you had to ask for the yogurt and fruit. There were no indications in the dining room. What you were supposed to do when you got there otherwise the room was clean. Place was a little rundown, but still very clean and very nice.

Quaint historic - great location and more affordable
Understand it’s well booked throughout the year due to decent value (high cost area) but keep in mind that is historic - older. Hotel has a mix of rooms – a relatively small room with standard queen bed, queen room on corners, rooms on upper floor with King sized beds – understand they are larger but have a lower ceiling due to roof line. Also a few “cabins”. There is a garden area and a lounge area for public use. At arrival there ere cookies and sparkling wine. They pour wine after 5pm. We received super friendly reception at check in and at breakfast - they had cups of yogurt w fresh berries - we were there early and hear the ladies chopping and working at prior. Otherwise the usual. Overheard the front desk adjust someone’s reservation who had accidently booked the wrong week. They really were looking to help fix the situation (possible if booked direct w the hotel or if booked via third party as refundable)
Front desk is not staffed overnight. 5 parking spaces plus a large area to pull in and unload in front of the hotel, and lots of neighborhood street parking. No AC or elevator – think seaside and historic. Big fan in the closet for window if needed. Easy walk to shore and several great eateries.

At breakfast several people were talking about how the sheets and towels were gray and looked dirty. Don't think that they were dirty just old and needed replacing.

The pictures on the website are misleading. Our room had purple walls with blue paint dripping down one side. Every thing felt worn out and very dated. Tiny bathroom and stained towels. Seriously disappointing but grateful we only had to stay there for one night. The breakfast is minimal but fine. Good location is the only positive. Total let down. I'm surprised by all of the good reviews but maybe none of those folks stayed in the room we had. :(

Very disappointed with our stay. The photographs online make the overall condition of the Centrella look brand new compared to what it is.

The building is run down, the walls in our room had flaking off paint, stains, and busted hardware. The bed was falling apart and the linens were all off white. On top of this the shower went from hot to cold every time someone flushed.

We left feeling ripped off given how much we paid and comparing the cost to other similarly priced accommodations in Pacifica Grove.

Only thing this place still has going for it is the location.

If you are looking for a bed and breakfast with nostalgia then look no further. The staff is very nice and courteous. The rooms have an attached bath. The room and the bathroom are small but adequate. There are no real frills. I did open the armoire to find a drying rack, ironing board, iron, and hair dryer. There are a few plugs in the room to charge phone. There is minimal counter space in the bathroom and sleeping room. It was my first B&B and i think that it was cute and welcoming and charming.

Built in 1892, the Centella Hotel is a beautiful Victorian, perfectly nestled in downtown Pacific Grove. Walk to Lover’s Point for a stroll on the beach or adventure through the rocky cliffs for breathtaking views. It was a very nice stay. The building is very nice and I liked all of the historic details. The staff was friendly and accommodating. Breakfast was included and the quality was good but the options limited. I think they had homage yogurt parfaits, bagles, and two pastries along with coffee, tea, and juice. There were some off street parking spots but they were occupied when we arrived. There was plenty of off street parking. The ocean was in walking distance. There were a lot of dining options in walking distance.

I would stay again.

The hotel looks very cozy but needs a BIG renovation... Carpet broken right at the entrance, towels in the bathrooms are stained and smell of \"antique\" as soon as you enter the hotel and obviously in the rooms as well.
I staid during a pretty busy weekend so prices were pretty high compared to the quality offered.

Please look at your to go coffee lids. They leak . The first lid leaked all over the arm of my shirt for the day. I went changed my long sleeve shirt that i had on. Went back down ...got a new lid and a new cup of cofffee and sure enogh...it does not drip at first sip but soon...like my third sip the coffee dribbled down the front of my newly put on shirt What a mess and surely disappointed. Breakfast is not free it's including in the included in the price of the room. Breakfast is not free it is included in the price of the room so if you want to go with cheap lids and cups maybe charge a little bit more on the room so we don't feel so bad.
