I liked the historical ambiance. However we were never informed about the road construction that would be going on outside our window Wed and Thurs morning. Parking was terrible. Then on Fri morning there were street sweepers and garbage trucks. Never quiet and peaceful!
Our friends spent more money and stayed in a cottage and said it was adequate. They enjoyed the spaciousness and the best part is the garden in the back. Wouldn't go again.

Their breakfast is gas station level - and they ran out of bagels, cream cheese, and pastries 1 hour into breakfast so we didn’t get any. The rooms are not well stocked - had to knock on a neighbors door for a blow dryer. And we were ignored by receptionist for 7 minutes when trying to check in as she was on the phone taking a personal call.

Our room was small but very quiet and comfortable. It is an old hotel, but that's ok. The continental breakfast was great, and having coffee available all day was nice as well as the free glass of wine in the evening. We loved sitting on the outside front porch enjoying the glass of wine. It was walkable to everything, including the beach. The staff was great - very helpful and knowledgeable!

The hotel is very dated but location is super. Nice employees. Parking was difficult as the farmer's market was going on. Suggestion: have employees parking on street so parking is available to guests. Breakfast was good but we had to ask for yogurt/fruit. Most people didn't even know they offered it. It was very good. We also had to ask for a glass of wine at early evening hour. Maybe have a bottle of wine and glasses out would have been better organized? Or a note saying ask front desk for your complementary glass of wine? That being said, staff was very friendly and helpful if you asked them a question.

We loved everything about our stay but the fact that the two things that we wanted to use most were unable to be used, which is our Jacuzzi bath tub with the Jets, not working in there and also the fireplace that was not working at this time. we feel like we couldn’t get the full experience with those two things not working. One of the most beloved things there was the staff member Tehilia (apologize if spelled wrong) was super sweet, kind, and very helpful during our stay.

parking was bad, It was a hassle every time. Tried to book an extra day and was told it was no longer available; and then was charged. Hotel was advised as a pay at check- in but was charged four days after I reserved. The floor in the room was extremely creeky as well as the bed and wardrobe. The walls were extremely thin as if you were in a home and had to keep your voice down. this was definitely more of a bread and breakfast inn than a hotel. it was surface level clean, but there were stains on the carpet. There was splatters on the wall tub, toilet toilet porcelain was chipped and brown. I felt uncomfortable to shower. I overall would not stay there again.

The property was extremely charming and historic, the room had all the amenities we needed and very comfortable, clean furniture. There was a lovely claw foot bathtub, as well as a shower (though the shower did not have any way to ensure privacy from others in the same room). For me, the old school decor and amenities is a huge plus.

In the morning there was a delicious breakfast, parfaits, pastries, bagels and a wide variety of beverages. I loved the juice. It was a delightful morning.

The location is great, I recommend walking a few blocks to Lovers Point and enjoying the plentiful local wildlife and the sea views. Nearby is Cannery Row and the famous Aquarium.

For limitations, I’d say the tap water wasn’t the best (maybe a local thing?), there were no plates or silverware in the room, and the shampoo above the bathtub was empty (good thing we brought our own). I appreciated that there was a hair dryer.

Parking was limited but it was easy to get street parking.

Staff was nice, though I didn’t interact much. We arrived after front desk hours and it went smoothly with a phone call ahead of time.

⭐☆☆☆☆ Extremely Overpriced, Unsanitary, and No Reimbursement. Avoid.

I booked this hotel through Expedia for 3 nights and paid a total of $1,248. The experience was so bad that I left one day early. Despite leaving early because of the unacceptable conditions, I did not receive any reimbursement.

As an international traveler, I was shocked by the price compared to the condition of the property. There is a big difference between “historic charm” and poor maintenance. This hotel felt neglected, dirty, and unhygienic.

The room was unacceptable. The carpets were heavily stained. The bed sheets looked dingy and musty. The towels were rough, grey, and stained. There was also exposed, unfinished drywall on the walls. The room felt old, dirty, and poorly maintained.

The most concerning issue was the presence of bugs, including what appeared to be bed bugs. No guest should experience this, especially after paying premium rates.

The breakfast was also very disappointing. The buffet stations were empty, there was no coffee available, and the staff did not seem concerned. Breakfast should not be advertised as a benefit if guests cannot access basic items.

The location is convenient and walkable to many attractions, but that does not make up for the poor condition of the hotel.

I also now question the credibility of the positive reviews I saw before booking. Based on my experience, they did not reflect the actual condition of the property.

Some old places have charm, some are just old.

On arrival we were assigned a front room, musty, on the street, noisy. The windows could be opened, to allow air, but there were no screens in the window. A paper handout said there were screens in the (decrepit) armoire, which was true, but they were way too small for the windows.

The floor in front of the windows sank a bit and made a distressing noise when stepped on. I hope there was no one in the room below, like ever, or they could be in for a drop in guest. Seriously.

The desk clerk said they assigned rooms like that to anyone who booked via Expedia. We should have known to call and make a direct reservation and discuss rooms. She said there were no vacancies. The sign in the front of the hotel said there were vacancies.

Street noise was not inconsiderable.

Others may have had a better experience, all I can report is my experience. If you book this place anyway, via Expedia or direct phone call, don't make the mistake I did and pay in advance.

Recently, we had the pleasure of staying at the Centrella in Pacific Grove, CA. Its location is positioned well, with easy access to both Monterey and Carmel. I, am an early riser, so having access to their quiet dining area for an early morning, great cup of coffee, is just what the doctor ordered! Additionally, they played some of the best \"Oldies\", music that I have ever heard! The manager was very attentive and friendly, as were all of the staff. I will do research on the Kirkwood Collection, because they really go overboard to make your stay, wonderful.

Cute little stay! Very old building so please go in with that expectation! Some things like chipped paint/old doors, but certainly not dirty, normal for a vintage stay. Complimentary fruit parfait in the morning was great as well the champagne and cookies in the evening. Was a little expensive for what it was, but I see it definitely fluctuates per weekend, so if you find a good deal would definitely recommend!

When we attempted to check in the staff was rude and not helpful. The parking was very limited plus there was a big street festival that took up all of the street parking. We should have been notified of this but were not. Our room faced a busy street which was noisy all night. The promised breakfast didn't start until 8AM which is late for early risers. The one day we did get breakfast it was just coffee and some mediocre pastries. They promised some kind of yogurt parfait but it was late being prepared. They have signs in their bathrooms about ancient plumbing and saving water but to get hot water you had to run the water for an extended time. In summary, this place is not ready for prime time.

Maybe the staff were having a bad day or two, but we experienced blatant rudeness from checking to breakfast. The breakfast (if you can call it that) experience was the worst. After calling them out on a few things, we did receive what I hope was a genuine apology so I guess that’s something.
FYI - sofa bed is a futon. My kids ended up sleeping on the floor as it was more comfortable.
The ‘white’ towels are a nice shade of brown.
A real shame as this property has potential.

Unique boutique type hotel but the parking is tough, especially for an oversized vehicle! We arrived and there was a festival happening so all street parking and hotel parking was full. Thankfully later that evening, after the event, we were able to find overnight parking on the street. But beware, there are only a couple spots offered by the hotel.
Our room was nice but the bed and pillows were dated, felt like it needed to be replaced because there was a pit in the middle of the mattress.
Overall the area is charming, the customer service was great and we enjoyed the charm of the historic building.

Just sad how bad this place has become. They advertise a tiny dirty plastic leather couch as a queen sofa bed for 2! The “breakfast” is a total joke with tiny muffins from the dollar store. Upcharges galore. The staff is annoying and can’t be bothered. Cannot recommend less.

The hotel is charming and in a great location, which we really enjoyed. However, the photos online don’t quite reflect the current condition of the rooms. They feel a bit dated and could use some updating.

We booked for 2 rooms and one cottage for our family of 6. In the cottage, the chair cushions were torn and the blinds in our room were difficult to operate due to their age. Small details like these took away from the overall comfort.

That said, the property itself has a lot of character. With some maintenance and more honest and accurate, up-to-date photos, it would better match expectations and enhance the experience.

Bes was not comfortable room was lacking amenities, for example coffee cups drinking cups. I stayed in the room that has the Jacuzzi tub I could not get in the shower because of the way that it was made. It was definitely unsafe. I wouldn’t recommend this bed-and-breakfast to anybody room was overpriced for what we got. I’m very disappointed.

The cottage I stayed in needs some TLC. There were smudge marks around one of the doors, a loose switch plate in the bathroom, and a noisy fridge. The bathroom towels were gray in color, giving them a dirty look, the bottom sheet on the bed wasn't tucked in, and the pillowcases were too big for the pillows. The complimentary yogurt parfait for breakfast was fresh and delicious, but the pastry offerings are limited and tasteless. The hotel location is excellent, a stone's throw from the coastal path and downtown Pacific Grove. It's still a good overall choice, but it could stand some freshening up.

When we checked in, the suite in the attic was 81 degrees Fahrenheit with no AC. When we went to the front desk to let them know, they told us there was nothing they could do. We asked if we could buy a portable AC or fans and be reimbursed and they said no. We asked if they could send someone to buy something of that kind and they said no. They gave us a broken fan, then when we informed them that it was broken, they could only provide a different one because another smaller room was empty in the house. We inquired about a partial refund since the room was not up to standard and were told no as well. We talked to Expedia about the issue, and they told us the only way to get a refund was to cancel the remainder of the reservation. We told Expedia that we would finish the reservation. However, the next morning the hotel told us that they had checked us out at Expedia’s request. Expedia told us they made no such request to the hotel. The hotel told us we could not just rebook the room because it was sold out. After two hours on the phone with Expedia and conversations with the front desk, we were leaving with nowhere to sleep and they then informed us that the room was available and we could stay. So they had told us it was sold out because our reservation was still on the room, though we had allegedly been checked out and refunded already. Even if the fault of Expedia, all could have been avoided if the hotel just addressed the room temperature and cared at all about guests.

We have come to this property for many years in the past and appreciate the location and the historic nature of the building. However, we realize that the property, which advertises itself as a boutique bed and breakfast, has not been maintained or improved and is currently in disrepair. For example, the windows and blinds are not fully functioning. The room paint needs attention, and the carpet buckles. Amenities we enjoyed in the past, like the nice breakfast and cheese and wine, are missing. Breakfast is a small bowl of yogurt and small pastries are set out, perhaps from Smart and Final. Staff seems pleasant but without any authority or knowledge. Daily room cleaning is not offered unless requested. Although we have stayed at the property for many years, we will not go back at any price, but it was overpriced for what we received.

I love the cozy charming feel of this Historic Landmark Hotel. Staff was friendly and kind. I felt comfortable and secure as a Solo Traveler. Parking is limited on the site, but the neighborhood streets around the hotel off her parking. You can unload in front of the hotel, and then go find a place to park. The breakfast of a yogurt parfait made to order and various pastries was very good. It is close to shopping and dining, and a walk to the beach is just several blocks away.

As a historic hotel with relatively good rates, this is not a luxury hotel. Rooms are on smaller side (there are choices in size) towels less fluffy white, floors creaky, most parking is very near on the street. There are lots of pluses....It's well located to the beach and food options, staff is super friendly. There's a very nice public area to sit w wine and cookies in the afternoon, and a garden patio area outside. Enjoy Joghurt w granola an fresh fruit at breakfast. This is a repeat stay place for us.

The building itself is beautiful and historic, and the architecture gives the property a lot of charm. Unfortunately, the actual condition of the hotel does not live up to the “boutique hotel” experience they advertise.

The room showed several issues related to maintenance and cleanliness, including worn carpet, dust accumulation around the windows, peeling wallpaper, stains on the bedding, and damaged fixtures. These details made the room feel poorly maintained.

Another disappointment was the breakfast. It was advertised as a continental breakfast, but it consisted mainly of yogurt and pre-packaged pastries that were simply warmed up.

In addition, we were sold one room category but were given a different one.

Because of these issues, we decided to check out early. To their credit, the staff refunded the night we did not stay, which we appreciated.

With better maintenance and attention to cleanliness, this property could truly live up to its historic charm.

We booked a cottage on Expedia. We have two gripes about our stay. First was that the pictures on Expedia showed a true patio for a cottage that’s on the first floor, but we got an upstairs cottage that just had chairs outside the door. I wouldn’t call it a patio and that’s one of the reasons we booked our room. So that was disappointing. Additionally, the windows are old and don’t have screens and opened at the floor. We had a 18 month old with us and we did put that information on our booking on Expedia, but we could not open the windows. Our toddler could literally fall out of these windows. I would think for liability purposes they would not put a family with small kids in that upstairs cottage. Since there isn’t AC, having the windows open is huge for ventilation and cooling.

However, there were some pros. The bed was very comfortable and it was walking distance to everything. Staff were overall friendly.

This was by far the cutest hotel we stayed in during our recent California trip. We stayed in the third floor in a surprisingly large space. It’s an older hotel (was a boarding house in a past life), but it’s in a quiet neighborhood, close to good restaurants, and a short walk to the beach park. Would absolutely stay here again. The front desk staff was very friendly and helpful.

The best thing I can say about our stay was that the room appeared to have clean linens and the desk clerk was very nice. The room was terribly neglected: bed was visibly lumpy, saggy and old, carpet had folds/bumps in it and did not seem clean, the floor actually had a hole in it, covered by carpet. There was no AC. There were patches in the bathroom wall covered by mismatched paint. The paint overall was worn and this room was TIRED.
I don’t know when the photos on the website were taken but they were not representative of the actual state of the room.

This is a converted old house, so the floorboards are a bit squeaky and plumbing a bit old, but the room was clean and provided the basic necessities. I loved how close it was to the walking trail that took us along the coast and to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. But my favorite amenity has to be the parfait available for breakfast — fresh and absolutely delicious!!!

I’m sharing this review to provide a realistic picture for future guests, as the high price tag (it was $190w/taxes & fees in October for one night) & positive reviews didn’t align with our experience. While I really wanted to appreciate the historic charm, the property felt neglected rather than \"classic.\"

The Positives:

The location is unbeatable—centrally located near the beach, coffee shops, and Main Street. Additionally, the staff was nice and the breakfast pastries & yogurt were a highlight.

The Reality of the Property:

Unfortunately, the maintenance is in a state of visible neglect. Our room featured chipping paint, peeling wallpaper, and carpets that were unacceptably dirty. The towels were so thin and dingy they felt more like rags than hotel linens.

Outside, the \"garden\" was a collection of nearly dead plants and broken fountains, and the greenery at the entrance was noticeably infested with mealybugs, toppled over and in plastic pots.

Final Thought:

Given the premium cost, the lack of basic upkeep was a major letdown. If you are expecting a polished historic stay, just be aware that the current condition of the hotel is quite dilapidated. The pictures on the site were nothing like what I experienced. I am sad to leave such a poor review but feel it necessary to do so. Luckily we were only staying for one night and we arrived late in the evening but this could have ruined our anniversary trip.

At first look, the hotel is very old. The carpet in the room was ancient and needed replacing and the room smelled musty. However, overall the experience was very good with a great breakfast, staff, wine hour and helpfulness when deciding where to eat. It is centrally located and within walking distance to beaches, parks, restaurants and shopping. I would likely stay there again.

The room was fine. The staff were great. Area was really convenient and close to downtown. Only con was my room was next to the back door, and there was a crazy woman banging the back door claiming she lived there. The staff came and handled her, but it was very scary to experience because it woke me from my sleep

Room clean and staff very attentive & courteous!

Background music throughout the day was most enjoyable. Enjoyed the garden setting in the late afternoons.

Not a fan of the Hawaiian punch juice offered at the breakfast but the granola/fruit was lovely and the coffee was great
