Comfortable stay! walkable distance to all major attractions and restaurants. right next to the boardwalk and a beautiful coastal trail. we didn't use our car in Monterey. the staff is polite and extremely helpful. the room was quite spacious and clean with all the basics like coffee machine, fridge, storage. the rooms even had a small balcony. the only drawback was the small pool and jacuzzi which was crowded by kids. they have a huge dining area and two restaurants on property though we didn't try. would recommend.

Everything was going well. My husband and i were staying to attend a conference. Unfortunately, we were abruptly woken at 11pm Saturday night by the fire alarms. We were panicked, triggered by the current affairs of the war, grabbed our belonging and prepared to evacuate. The overhead alert stated for us to remain and wait for instructions, yet none came. No alert on our phone from the concierge service, nobody came to our door. The alarm went off and on and off again. Still no communication. I laid awake all night, too tired to attend the last day of my paid for conference. No complimentary breakfast or free night stay was offered for this inconvenience, I'm very disappointed.

I love the portola! Only place I stay and travel almost monthly down to Monterey. The rooms are always clean, spacious, the beds are very comfy. Partial bay view is a must. Balcony has two chairs nice to enjoy ur coffee on or listen to some wildlife (sea lions). Basically 4 restaurants attached to the hotel, Carmel bakery n coffee inside the hotel. The location is prime! Walk right and head down Alvarado st you got ur breweries and 10-15 restaurants. Go left and you’re on the Monterey pier , 7 restaurants, a bunch of clothes ans candy shops and my favorite whale watching. I do every time and it’s so close to portola.

We love the location of the hotel. It’s near our favorite coffee shops, cafes and walk to the water. Skip the courtyard view rooms because they offer views directly into neighboring patios/rooms! Just do partial oceanview or upper floor rooms with patios. The bar had good eats and drinks too. Check was pretty late so be sure not to make evening plans too early. Other than that, we were happy with our stay.

Parking garage chargers were only for Teslas - and required an adapter. It took over 8 hours to charge our car.

Had a very comfortable stay. Room was very clean. Shampoo and body wash scent was pleasant and an added bonus. Was just a short distance walk to wharf. Staff was courteous. Tried ordering room service but was not available but we ordered from restaurant and picked up. Will consider staying here again. Very nice hotel.

So over priced! The pictures show the hotel way nicer than actually it is. The rooms are so small. The hot tub is small, it was so crowded. A trip to relax ended up being stressful! I don’t recommend it!

Mixed Experience Despite Friendly Staff.
I selected this hotel for a special mother-daughter trip, as it was our first solo getaway together. I chose the property based on its location and positive reviews, with plans to visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium and enjoy the nearby ice skating rink.

Check-in was a highlight of our stay. The front desk associate was genuinely friendly and welcoming, and she went out of her way to make my 5-year-old feel special by giving her a dessert coin, which was a very thoughtful and appreciated gesture.

Unfortunately, the remainder of the experience fell short. The room we were assigned was located outside of the main building, requiring us to walk through an exterior area. With a young child and heavy rain, this setup was not ideal and made me feel uneasy being so far from the main hotel. The room itself also had a constant, very loud HVAC-type noise that was noticeable even with the television on.

The most disruptive issue occurred at 5:00 a.m. when a fire alarm sounded, abruptly waking us. It was unclear whether this was an emergency or a drill. I contacted the front desk and was told the fire department was onsite and evacuation was not necessary. After the alarm stopped, flashing emergency lights remained visible through the windows, making it difficult to return to sleep. Roughly 20–30 minutes later, an announcement stated it was a false alarm. There was no follow-up or acknowledgment from staff afterward.

We were given a room on a floor with no elevator access, which the concierge did not mention upon checking in, so we realized after walking to the other side of the hotel that we had to lug our suitcases up 2 flights of stairs by ourselves. After returning to the desk, we were ordered to walk outside ourselves to flag down one of the bellhops outside the hotel to do it for us. I would’ve appreciated a friendly or apologetic tone throughout this whole thing, but the woman at the desk was quite rude about it.

Other points- 1) parking is $25 a night and the parking lot is very full, and 2) there is no breakfast included with your stay
