The valet parking was helpful as the hotel is on a busy street. You do have to pay a flat rate fee of course. There is a parking a garage across the street as well. The staff is very kind, helpful and responsive. The room was clean. Personally, I think if I just needed a place to stay on a solo vacation, because I was going to be out exploring most of the days, it’s a good option. If I had more people in my group, I’d probably look into a different stay and room. Cafe’s, restaurants, beaches and other things to explore is walking distance so that was a huge plus!

The staff were very welcoming at this facility, while the rooms had some cleanliness issues, such as a dirty carpet, dirt on my bedsheets, and no screens to block insects from entering through the windows, the room was cozy and billed at an affordable price. If the rates for this hotel stay consistent, I would actually find myself staying here once more, but if the aspects of the room I listed above are dealbreakers for you then do try and find a more mainstream hotel to stay with. Overall, they treated me with respect and provided plenty of bathroom amenities such as soaps, towels, cups, moisturizer and a hair dryer to make my stay comfortable.

This hotel is centrally located at a great price point. Communally shared spaces were a bit aged but our large room had modern amenities and included a working fireplace; and the hotel had a pet area, and private-use hot tub that we could reserve for an hour at a time. If anything was needed in the room, all we had to do was request it at the front desk and it was brought up to us in minutes. We’d stay there again given the cost for value ratio.

Upon our arrival, we noticed the lobby carpet was dirty and hadn’t been vacuumed in a while. We opted for the older sections of the hotel, which unfortunately lacked air conditioning. We weren’t sure if the newer sections had AC, but we didn’t mind the older feel and smell of the old wood. The smell was pleasant enough because we were eager to stay in this cool, historic hotel for a bit.

The room was clean and had only one window, which it was hot in the room, so we opened the window only to discovered it didn’t have a screen. We promptly requested a fan, which the staff brought one up to our room and greatly helped. The bathrooms had been remodeled, resulting in a spacious and modern design.

While there was no on-site parking, a public paid lot was conveniently located across the street at a reasonable price. We were able to walk and enjoy the downtown area shops and resturant with a pleasant stay in this historic hotel.

We understand that this is a historic hotel, and we truly appreciate that because we travel all over the world and love staying in charming, historic properties. Unfortunately, the room we were given was extremely disappointing and looked nothing like the photos shown in the listing.

The biggest issue was the very unpleasant smell in the room, which most likely came from the old, heavily worn carpets. They looked dirty and extremely outdated, and the odor was so strong that we had to keep the window open all night while running the ceiling fan. Unfortunately, the fan made loud, unusual noises throughout the night, making it difficult to sleep.

The furniture was unattractive and very worn out. There were no bedside lamps and not even a chair in the room, making it feel incomplete and uncomfortable.

We fully understand that a historic hotel does not have to be modern, but guests should still receive a clean, comfortable room that matches the photos advertised. Sadly, this was not our experience. I would not recommend staying here, as it can be a very disappointing experience.

Our first night, we couldn’t get into our room until 2 hours after check-in. They kept telling us that it would be 15 minutes when clearly it wasn’t. Then, the room was so loud overnight we got no sleep. Even with earplugs and the window closed, the street noise was very disturbing and regular. We luckily had the option to switch rooms for the second night, and the noise in the courtyard room was much better. Overall, room felt clean enough, but the lobby was visibly dirty. The hot water served in the morning was like warm. We will not be staying here again.

There's not really any parking as far as we know. And the basic historic suite does come with a coffee maker but no water provided unless you find a machine in the hallway. Aside from that it's a beautiful hotel.

Hotel is very dated. Bed was hard. Tv was old. No usb plugins to charge your phone. No parking available for the hotel. Had to park three blocks away. Elevator is old and has problems working properly. I got stuck in elevator then when I got out it would not go down from third floor to first or second floor. Staff was rude and unwelcoming upon check in.

The place is funky, and in a nostalgic way. The building itself is ideally located in downtown Old Monterey, steps from the historic adobes, near the wharf, in the midst of the weekly farmer’s market. The building reminds me of Europe, odd staircases, non functional elevators, no parking, this place could be really chic. New beds would be a great start. My room was very clean and a sweet maid was on duty throughout my stay. My windows opened, but without a breeze, there was a ceiling fan, no A/C.
This is the heart of Monterey and surrounded by exceptional restaurants. I would highly recommend Alejandro’s, fine Mexican just up the street. Cafe Fina on the wharf for the freshest of seafood with a window on the local otters.
I would stay there again. Fingers crossed for a better, quieter bed.

The hotel was nice, the people were very friendly in the location was excellent. It was slightly dilapidated and not extremely clean and the amenities were OK, water was readily available. The ice machine was in the basement. The hot tub was in the basement and usable only by reservation and half the hotel has lived in by permanent residence, but the location is excellent and our stay was overall quite nice.

The King Suite rooms with fireplaces are wonderful. Very spacious, we could stay there for a long time. The location is perfect and walking distance to fisherman’s wharf and many good restaurants. The free trolly stop is just around the corner and so easy to use. Only a mile and a half from the Aquarium. Can’t wait to go back!!

- Great location! There are lots of restaurants, bars, and things to do within walking distance, which made getting around very easy.

- valet parking was available and was a nice convenience.

- the room was clean and comfortable, although a bit smaller than expected

- the sour water pressure was pretty weak, which was probably my biggest complaint

- amenities are somewhat limited compared to other hotels in the area

- the staff was friendly, and overall the state was pleasant

- despite the comments above, I would definitely stay here again if I needed a convenient place to stay in Monterey. The location is hard to be, and having so many food and drink options nearby made the stay enjoyable.

Room looked better in photos online than in real life but price was good, location was good, staff was friendly. The greatest part about the Monterey Hotel was how it was on the same street as all the shops and very close to fisherman’s wharf as well as the place where the trolley picks you up for free and drives you to Cannery Row. Great location overall! Very spacious bathroom. The staff were extremely fast to come bring new towels or empty trash cans.

We were really disappointed with our stay at this hotel. The photos online are extremely misleading and do not reflect the actual condition of the property. When we arrived, we genuinely didn’t even recognize it from the exterior because it looked so different—far more run-down and dated in person.

Inside, the hotel felt very dingy. The carpets were visibly dirty and stained to the point where we didn’t feel comfortable placing any bags or purses on the floor unless they could be wiped down afterward. Overall cleanliness and upkeep were not what we expected based on the listing.

One particularly uncomfortable experience happened early in the morning. As a mom of two currently in my first trimester, I was feeling nauseous and went down to the lobby restroom to avoid waking my family. While quietly waiting for the nausea to pass, hotel staff came and banged on the door, questioning whether I was a guest and asking me to leave. Even after explaining the situation, the interaction felt invasive and lacking in basic privacy and courtesy.

The only real positive was the location—it is within walking distance to many nearby attractions, which was convenient. Theres a nice walking trail nearby which we enjoyed using.

That said, we would strongly suggest looking into other nearby hotels for a more comfortable and welcoming experience.

This was the absolute worst hotel experience I have ever had. There were stains everywhere, blood marks, boogers, stains on the floors with red carpet that was probably installed in the 50s. Our door hinge was loose and door did not close properly. It was a hostel with a bathroom in it and I would not recommend it to anyone.

Great food all around the hotel and they had a great coffee bar in the mornings and Water containers outside of rooms which was great ! Windows opened up and we had a fan.. never got too hot! THEY GAVE ME A KEY TO AN ALREADY OCCUPIED ROOM.

My partner and I checked in around 9pm and the receptionist gave us a key to our room. I went to the room and unlocked the door and opened it to a woman in the midst of changing.

We were both shocked! The receptionist was sorry for this mistake and gave me an "upgrade" room. (Upgrade is in quotes because the bed and the room still looked like the same size.)

I just felt uneasy during my stay because if I could accidentally walk into someone's occupied room, someone can do that to me as well...

You pay $8/day with in/out entry privileges. You don't have to pay parking from 6pm to 9 am. The coffee was very good!! This is an older hotel but with lots of character. Great downtown location.

Was originally put in “historic” side of hotel that had horrible carpets that held a smell. When asked to change rooms the desk put me in another room same side same problem. So after returning to the desk and only asking if there was a room that was updated did she offer to put me in the New/modern side of the hotel. Serious upgrade. Why she didn’t offer in the first place is beyond me. Don’t stay in “historic” rooms & make sure to ask for when booking.

Parking is off property, only have valet on weekends, historic rooms are smaller than normal rooms, toilet was weird sounded like it was air injected. Sink faucet was low pressures, shower was hard to go from faucet to shower. Older walls and ceiling heard everything above and outside intend hall way., sounding like a wooden dance hall above our room. Other than those things the stay was okay, I would stay again in another part of the hotel. Lil pricey for standard historic rooms.

Downsides: the old hotel has a weird layout, it’s hard to navigate and although there is an elevator, I still had to drag luggage up some stairs and through narrow corridors. No onsite parking so you have to pay extra to park, and again you have to carry luggage around.

I would not recommend this place. Our room was basically filled with the bed, and the carpet was so disgustingly dirty that we had to place towels on the floor to walk without our shoes. The walls were so thin that we heard several people snoring at night, as well as phones vibrating. We hardly slept! Very disappointing!

I have to start by saying that hotel rates in Monterey are extremely high, but this hotel was even less expensive than one Motel 6 I looked at. This hotel has a newer building, and the older "historic" building, where we stayed. The elevator to the historic building wasn't working, so they sent us through the back of the 4th floor of the main building, up a few outdoor stairs, into the old building. I didn't realize that some of the things that we take for granted in a hotel wouldn't be there. For example - there was no mini-fridge. One of my daughters' medications needed refrigeration, so we ended up using an insulated Trader Joe's bag as an ice bag, with ice from the hotel basement. Good thing we aren't on insulin. Maybe the newer building rooms have mini-fridges? If you really need one, ask before booking. The other thing was no USB port to charge my watch. Thankfully, I had charged it at the previous hotel. After 3 days at the Monterey Hotel, it was all but dead by the time we made it home. I think maybe the old building couldn't handle a lot electrically.

The hotel has some obvious deferred maintenance, and a very small staff of hardworking people wearing a lot of hats. The bellmen are also the valet drivers, and even the repair men when the faucet in my daughters' room malfunctioned. However, I really commend the staff for being so upbeat, welcoming and helpful. It was kind of like staying with an old friend whose house is kind of shabby, but clean and welcoming.

Great location, perfect as the Shuttle bus from SFO airport stops opposite. Within walking distance to all downtown shops and restaurants, fishermans wharf, all minutes away. I didn't like that I could hear the guests in the room above walking about throughout the night. The intricately carved wooden headboard looked great but I am a clean freak and there was quite bit of dust and hairs in all the crevices which was off puting. I cant imagine that housekeeping checks this after every guest. The water temperature in the shower fluctuates depending on usage from other hotel guests and the bathroom is quite dated. Overall
I would still stay here again. Its a gorgeous building with great architectural features. Water coolers conveniently located on all floors. Pastries would have been nice in the morning with the complimentary coffee but there are some great breakfast options downtown so it wasnt a big deal. Reasonably priced. Staff helpful and friendly and great communication from the concierge via email. Thank you. I visited here from the UK.

In addition to expensive rooms you also have to pay for parking. Big dirt spots all over carpet in the room. Dirty bathroom. Gaps all around door frame the bright hall light does not let you sleep. The pictures online are very deceiving. The location is perfect walking distance to wharf, restaurants and breweries.

I stayed in one of the historic rooms, which is historically small and unappointed. There wasn't even a chair, just a bed and a bathroom. If you wanted to sit, you could sit on the toilet or the bed. The staff were fine, the hotel at least in that area, is pretty shabby. I was unimpressed and I will not return.

This is a historic hotel that maintains that same vibe. It has many very nice updates and our room was very spacious. They staff were always available and greeted is each time we walked by. We lived the hotel and the walkability of the area. Be sure to be there on a Tuesday night for the farmer's market. So many wonderful things to see and do, or just show down and relax for a while.

Charming historic hotel in a very convenient downtown location. It’s within walking distance of many restaurants, Fisherman’s Wharf, Cannery Row, and the Presidio of Monterey, which made exploring easy. Parking was affordable in a nearby public garage, which was a nice bonus for the area. The hotel has a lot of historical charm and character. My only downside was the lack of air conditioning, which would have made the stay more comfortable.

The hotel is in a great location. They put us in a small room with a little window which faced an exterior hallway at foot-level of the people walking by outside our room. Anyone could see directly into the room where the bed is. We did choose the lower priced room, so I guess "you get what you pay for". I know that there are much nicer rooms at this hotel, we just didn't get one.

I was expecting a little more from the room. It looked like my bed was recently broken as there was no headboard but I could see the outline on the wall where the headboard was. The bed also felt like it was broken because it dipped a lot in the center. It’s very noisy where this hotel is located. Since there is no AC I needed to open the window but it’s very noisy outside.

The hotel is very convenient and very nice. Our room was a tiny one but it had what it needed, clean linens and a clean bathroom. The public parking lot a half a block away was surprising easy to get in and out of. Maybe we got lucky finding a space there when we needed one since it was easily the least expensive part of the weekend. Parking is free after 6pm and free on Sunday’s.

The location was extremely convenient to the whale watching on Fisherman's Wharf and shops around the area coffee shops restaurants. We loved the antique furniture and atmosphere was welcoming. We will stay there again due to location cleanliness price was right helpful staff.

Location is excellent. Cleanliness of room was not great. Rooms need a thorough cleaning and refresh. Room furniture is all nicked up. There was no room to put a toiletry bag in the bathroom.

This hotel is amazing! I love the staff! So helpful and accommodating, location is great! In the heart of the main drag and close to everything. Will definitely be going back!

this is a property in needs for renovation, bedding was bad, room not insulated and noisy, rudimentary amenities (no safe in the room for example) and staff not very flexible (would not consider late checkout on a sunday, would only turn the beds if you asked for it ) - the only positive is the location.

The room I was assigned was terrible! The carpet was filthy and worn, the view from all windows was the roof equipment, the noise from other rooms and the water system was unacceptable. The cost of this room was about twice what it should have been and provided little value.
I had stayed here twice before over the years, but I will not be back
