Room was clean and cozy. Staff were friendly and helpful. I liked the location, there was so much within walking distance.
Downsides: the old hotel has a weird layout, it’s hard to navigate and although there is an elevator, I still had to drag luggage up some stairs and through narrow corridors. No onsite parking so you have to pay extra to park, and again you have to carry luggage around.

I would not recommend this place. Our room was basically filled with the bed, and the carpet was so disgustingly dirty that we had to place towels on the floor to walk without our shoes. The walls were so thin that we heard several people snoring at night, as well as phones vibrating. We hardly slept! Very disappointing!

I have to start by saying that hotel rates in Monterey are extremely high, but this hotel was even less expensive than one Motel 6 I looked at. This hotel has a newer building, and the older \"historic\" building, where we stayed. The elevator to the historic building wasn't working, so they sent us through the back of the 4th floor of the main building, up a few outdoor stairs, into the old building. I didn't realize that some of the things that we take for granted in a hotel wouldn't be there. For example - there was no mini-fridge. One of my daughters' medications needed refrigeration, so we ended up using an insulated Trader Joe's bag as an ice bag, with ice from the hotel basement. Good thing we aren't on insulin. Maybe the newer building rooms have mini-fridges? If you really need one, ask before booking. The other thing was no USB port to charge my watch. Thankfully, I had charged it at the previous hotel. After 3 days at the Monterey Hotel, it was all but dead by the time we made it home. I think maybe the old building couldn't handle a lot electrically.

The hotel has some obvious deferred maintenance, and a very small staff of hardworking people wearing a lot of hats. The bellmen are also the valet drivers, and even the repair men when the faucet in my daughters' room malfunctioned. However, I really commend the staff for being so upbeat, welcoming and helpful. It was kind of like staying with an old friend whose house is kind of shabby, but clean and welcoming.

Great location, perfect as the Shuttle bus from SFO airport stops opposite. Within walking distance to all downtown shops and restaurants, fishermans wharf, all minutes away. I didn't like that I could hear the guests in the room above walking about throughout the night. The intricately carved wooden headboard looked great but I am a clean freak and there was quite bit of dust and hairs in all the crevices which was off puting. I cant imagine that housekeeping checks this after every guest. The water temperature in the shower fluctuates depending on usage from other hotel guests and the bathroom is quite dated. Overall
I would still stay here again. Its a gorgeous building with great architectural features. Water coolers conveniently located on all floors. Pastries would have been nice in the morning with the complimentary coffee but there are some great breakfast options downtown so it wasnt a big deal. Reasonably priced. Staff helpful and friendly and great communication from the concierge via email. Thank you. I visited here from the UK.

In addition to expensive rooms you also have to pay for parking. Big dirt spots all over carpet in the room. Dirty bathroom. Gaps all around door frame the bright hall light does not let you sleep. The pictures online are very deceiving. The location is perfect walking distance to wharf, restaurants and breweries.

I stayed in one of the historic rooms, which is historically small and unappointed. There wasn't even a chair, just a bed and a bathroom. If you wanted to sit, you could sit on the toilet or the bed. The staff were fine, the hotel at least in that area, is pretty shabby. I was unimpressed and I will not return.

This is a historic hotel that maintains that same vibe. It has many very nice updates and our room was very spacious. They staff were always available and greeted is each time we walked by. We lived the hotel and the walkability of the area. Be sure to be there on a Tuesday night for the farmer's market. So many wonderful things to see and do, or just show down and relax for a while.

Charming historic hotel in a very convenient downtown location. It’s within walking distance of many restaurants, Fisherman’s Wharf, Cannery Row, and the Presidio of Monterey, which made exploring easy. Parking was affordable in a nearby public garage, which was a nice bonus for the area. The hotel has a lot of historical charm and character. My only downside was the lack of air conditioning, which would have made the stay more comfortable.

The hotel is in a great location. They put us in a small room with a little window which faced an exterior hallway at foot-level of the people walking by outside our room. Anyone could see directly into the room where the bed is. We did choose the lower priced room, so I guess \"you get what you pay for\". I know that there are much nicer rooms at this hotel, we just didn't get one.

I was expecting a little more from the room. It looked like my bed was recently broken as there was no headboard but I could see the outline on the wall where the headboard was. The bed also felt like it was broken because it dipped a lot in the center. It’s very noisy where this hotel is located. Since there is no AC I needed to open the window but it’s very noisy outside.

The hotel is very convenient and very nice. Our room was a tiny one but it had what it needed, clean linens and a clean bathroom. The public parking lot a half a block away was surprising easy to get in and out of. Maybe we got lucky finding a space there when we needed one since it was easily the least expensive part of the weekend. Parking is free after 6pm and free on Sunday’s.

this is a property in needs for renovation, bedding was bad, room not insulated and noisy, rudimentary amenities (no safe in the room for example) and staff not very flexible (would not consider late checkout on a sunday, would only turn the beds if you asked for it ) - the only positive is the location.

The room I was assigned was terrible! The carpet was filthy and worn, the view from all windows was the roof equipment, the noise from other rooms and the water system was unacceptable. The cost of this room was about twice what it should have been and provided little value.
I had stayed here twice before over the years, but I will not be back

Great location for walking around Monterey, however, not for getting a good night sleep. Had street facing room and had to sleep w/ windows open bc there’s no air conditioning. Nonstop noise from 12:30 am to morning. Conversations on the street, then two garbage collection and 2 different times, and then the 1hr squawking of seagulls before sunrise. Maybe, ask for an inside room if you value sleep.

I stayed in the historical side of the building since I had a dog. The room was spacious but definitely old. Electrical outlets were loose and kept falling off, and keycards were not working properly. The lights are dim. There are parking lots that offer free parking from 6 pm to 9 am, and are able to park overnight for free.

I WILL say tho, for the historical rooms, the beds are EXTREMELY loud and there’s no AC but it was an affordable place and nothing insane to complain about. I’d do it again on a budget and the history on the place is very interesting. Parking was easy to find and the staff were no issue.

No parking for the hotel, you have to hope for a spot in the garage down the street or you're completely screwed. NO AIR CONDITIONING in the entire hotel. You can open the windows and listen to the blaring music from the cars below and squaking birds if you want fresh air. The \"Historic Rooms\" are just dated and cramped. Our light switch didnt even work. How historic. Do yourself a favor and spend a little bit more money and stay somewhere else. This hotels rates are way above the quality it offers

We use Valet Parking for convenience, but don't use the in and out feature. We walk everywhere once there. Only took an uber back to the hotel after dinner one evening. Street noise is a little noisey outside the rooms. Staff is friendly enough. Some more than others. Alvarado Street, Fisherman's Wharf, and Cannery Row are all easily walkable.

The valet parking was horrible when we first arrived because there was nowhere to park for nearly an hour in order to get the valet parking service. The room was as described that had a musty smell. It would’ve been nice to have the trash removed and towels replaced at least every other day, but this hotel has a policy of not coming in the room at all during your stay and so you have to ask the front desk for towels every day. The location was awesome and the antique furniture and mirrors were beautiful in the hotel. Also, the hotel staff was very kind and tried to be accommodating. I was charged a $100 deposit the day of check-in even though I had already paid in full for the hotel stay. This was unexpected and I wasn’t told that this would happen. The gym is very small and we wanted to use the hot tub, but it was always in use the whole time we were there the place where you get ice was really dark and a little bit scary.

The hotel has not been updated in years. It is billed as \"historic\" but, actually, it's just old. The common areas are nicer than the rooms themselves. Everything is clean and the housekeepers do their best, but it doesn't make up for the old mattresses and carpets. The \"breakfast\" is just coffee and tea. The walls are paper-thin. The location is fantastic, centrally located...but they only have valet parking which is more than three times the parking cost in the public lots. Overall, a good value if you're looking for a \"relatively\" inexpensive hotel in the center of Monterey - but I think it's overpriced for what you get.

In a good area for shopping and dining with plenty of options nearby. The historic room we were staying in had no mini fridge or microwave though, so we couldn’t bring leftovers back with us. Though they don’t have breakfast, they have coffee and tea available in the morning. Hot tub access is first come, first serve and you have private access for an hour. It’s a lovely little area and quite relaxing. The room fit our needs as we were there as tourists and didn’t spend a lot of time in the room, but the historic rooms are small enough that only bedside tables, the bed, and an armoire fits, so if you are expecting a desk to work at, you’ll need to go to nearby coffee shops.

The room was really dated. The carpet was in bad shape. There were nicks in the paint and stains on the walls. The bed was ok. The bathroom fixtures were from the 70s or 80s. Water pressure in shower was good. I was put in the historic part of the hotel which apparently means it is old and neglected. The window to my room, #408, was adjacent to a street that is quite loud. Fixtures in the room were old, TV was small (like computer monitor size), and desk was tiny. The staff was great and friendly. My only complaint was my room. Honestly, it was pretty gross. I wore socks in the room because I was worried about the carpet being clean.

Staff was great and polite, but the room and building were outdated and old. Carpets were gross and appeared to not have been cleaned in a while. You could hear everything inside and outside of the hotel room, street sweepers, music, garbage truck, etc. room was old, patches in ceiling, holes in the wall where a painting might have been? Carpets old and gross looking. The bed and pillows were uncomfortable. Overall, the price was not worth what was paid.
