The room was small but the bed was comfortable. The room was in an old building but was clean. The bathroom was small but clean and the shower had good hot water that did not run out. The old elevator was kind of cool. There was some loud music from a nearby bar one night but it didn't last too long. (bring ear plugs just in case). The spanish verandah opens on a side street from one of the main shopping areas of Madrid which is also part of their Madrid Broadway area.

I enjoyed my stay at La Fontana very much. The room was spotless, small but very functional. The staff was friendly and very helpful. The location of the Hostal is incredible, within walking distance to many places you'd like to visit in Madrid and with excellent connections to the airport.

The single room is very compact (I'd go as far as saying the photos are misleading), with windows facing the building's ventilation shaft. Although the bed is a bit uncomfortable, the room provides all necessary amenities, and the hostel is conveniently located. It offers good value for the cost.

All I needed was in this hostell, situation was important to me. Main street was just behind the corner but nice bittoresk old streets were close too. Breakfast and specially coffee at the hostell was important to me first in the morning. Staff was helpful.

I found this hotel by chance on Expedia website. I liked the look of it , location and the fact that breakfast was included, which is not always the case in hotels in Madrid even those with more stars.
I was given the choice on arrival of a street facing room with a balcony or a courtyard facing one. I chose the street facing as I like the buzz of the street life in Madrid. It was noisy but excellent double glazing dulled everything down and I was pleased with my choice. The street below is busy until very late particularly at weekends due to there being bars, cafes and restaurants.
My room was small but adequate with small en suite facilities. There were no frills, but I not looking for them. Space for hanging clothes was limited and only a shelf for small items..
The heating was very efficient but overwhelming as it is centrally controlled. Even in the cold weather I found it too much. In summer there is a overhead electric fan rather than air con. I tried it and found it to be very efficient a surprisingly quiet.
Breakfast is pre-packed with good quality fresh coffee and hot milk, fresh apples and oranges. It is served from 8.30 onwards but can only accommodate eight people at a time and is served in the hall corridor. I had no problems getting a seat.
The entrance to the hotel is via a large wooden door opened with an electronic card through a magnificent period hallway and is situated on the first floor. There is a small lift.

Cute little hostel in the heart of busy Madrid
In the heart of Madrid's \"Times Square\" it's just far enough off the main street where you don't hear noise all night. Breakfast is good to fill up before visiting all the tourist sites. Very clean and close to most subways. Staff was incredibly helpful with check-in and other things we needed during our stay.

It was very cozy and amazing location!! You can't beat this location. The room was a little dirty when we arrived. The bed sheets looked used and had hair all over them, and the towels smelled like cigarettes. The bathroom was shared, but there was no issue, make sure you wait a while so the water heats up or you'll freeze. Overall its very doable. the price was great and we saw all of Madrid because the walking distance was basically nothing and you were in the middle of everything. The staff was very friendly. Lastly, the wifi stopped working our last night so we were kind of shut off from the world as service was bad there.

Excellent Value but Maintenance Issues
Overall it was just alright. The staff was exceptionally nice and the location was good. There was one guy who spoke excellent English and even the people who didn't tried hard to communicate. However, the condition of the hotel was very very old. The shower in my room was plugged and did not drain. After watching them use draino (very chemically smelling) and a plunger and watching dirty gross water spill everywhere. I opted to shower in the communal shower even though I had paid a few Euro more to have a shower in my room. The walls were super thin so you can hear everything from someone watching tv to talking to laughing at a tv program.
The breakfast was better then expected. It included coffee, toast, packaged breads, fruit, yogurt, and granola bars. The hotel was very inexpensive and the fact that it included breakfast made it an incredible deal. It was a very good value :)

Great central location in the heart of Madrid
The Hostel was a little bit hard to find with Google maps but after asking several locals we were finally able to locate it. The rooms are small but perfectly adequate. The continental breakfast was great. Far better than we expected. Staff were very helpful. Would definitely stay there again.

Made double hotel reservation with single flight reservation, we ended up with a tiny room, single bed. An extra 5 lbs on my frame, using the toilet & shower would have been impossible.

We decided on this place because of the price and the location. The service was wonderful, and everyone was very friendly. The place itself, however , could do with a coat of paint. It looked run down. As for a location, it is very central and convenient. There are bars on this street that close at 4 am!!!!. It was extremely noisy, people were stoned in front of the entrance, and extremely loud. I couldn't understand why in Spain, where bread is amazing, we were served dreadful sliced bread, and pre-packed buns! Whatever!

The hostel offers only a bed and very basic facilities, if you're ok with that then this is ideal for you. The walls are paper thin, so you can hear everything that is going on in the hallway and neighbouring bedrooms. The toilet was so close to the sink that I had to sit on it sideways. Don't take the breakfast option, it's only coffee and dried toast. I asked a room with shower facilities and that is what I got but it hadn't been cleaned properly, so I found body hair (I'll leave it your imagination from which part of the body) on the wall. All in all there are better option out there, I suggest you pass on this one and take your chances else where.

Great value hotel less than a minute walk from Gran Via Metro station. Excellent free wifi and the bonus of a 'help yourself' breakfast (cereal bars, yoghurt, pan au chocolat, croissants, coffee and juice) served till 11.30- set us up for the day! 12 o'clock check out was handy too. Only downsides; not much natural light in our room( not really a problem as we used the room as a base to explore the city) the bathroom was a little worn and the walls were quite thin - not a problem for us but might be for others. Apart from a little neighbour noise ( the odd cough and bang of door) our room was set at the back so no street noise - really quiet.

Really helpful staff, clean room! Perfect for a cheap hotel, obviously you get what you pay for so don't expect too much, but we had no problems with it. Only thing was breakfast was a bit naff and probably would be better off going to the supermarket and getting a loaf of bread. Overall though would recommend.

Nice hostal in the center of Madrid. The interior looks old-fashioned, but I liked it. The staff is friendly. The room has a little balcony that is good for people watching. You have your own keys from all entrance doors that is also a plus. The big minus is the absence of AC which cause the problem during 40 degree summer days. Another minus is a street noise that never goes away because of the central location of the hostal.

Dreadful place! Room with no daylight, lots of noise from the bar below and the constant reek of cigarette smoke as a result of the staff smoking on the premises. The hot tap on the basin in the bathroom just dripped all night and couldn't be turned on or off. And the breakfast was awful - just don't do it.

A simple hostal but decorated with a whimsical touch a lot of artwork in the hallways and the rooms made it a bit less basic . bed was comfy but shower was hard to use. I think it was designed to cut back on water usage and in the morning I opted for a sponge bath at the sink rather than struggle again with shower but maybe it was just the one in my room. Decent free breakfast of good coffee croissants toasts cheese wedges and yoghurt. I liked the place.

The location is perfect, just a few steps from metro Gran Via. The interior decoration (corridor and rooms) is tasteful. The staff is nice, in particular the super friendly young Romanian guy, Giorgia. Wifi is bad sometimes. Water does not drain well in the shower. Like in most hostals I've seen, noise is a big negative factor, and walls are paper-thin. When one has quiet neighbors, it can be a pleasant stay. I made two stays here, during my first stay, my \"neighbor\" was very noisy, coughing all the time (he was probably sick) and watching TV on high volume until 6AM -- I was totally unable to sleep. Impossible to change to another room coz the hostal was full, according to the staff I talked to. During my second stay, my neighbor was quiet, so it was quite a nice stay. Strangely, plumbing makes incredibly loud noise. When someone takes a shower nearby, the noise is stunning, the first time I heard it, I thought the TV in my room had gone crazy.

Cozy and comfortable. Had a street side balcony which I always prefer because I enjoy the street life of a city but has great shutters to keep out the noise if you like quiet. Enjoyed the breakfast and breakfast room. Great location, close to Gran Via ,short walk to del Sol and Plaza Major areas If you are a walker ,Prado ,Reina Sophia and Atocha train station are within about 20 min walk. Would love to stay here again. Great value for the money

Excellent location and price. Equivalent to being two minutes walk from Oxford Street. Two minutes from metro. Staff very helpful. Very clean. Continental breakfast from 8.30am. Good cafe almost next door if you need an alternative.

It was a lovely place and the staffs were good. The problem I am a deaf traveller and found it as a challenge because there's an intercom outside the door, which made it more difficult to get in on my first arrival but everything's good. The location was excellent, easy to access to the metro, shops and restaurants etc.

Good location, within walking distance of many sights. Near a subway stop. Staff was very nice and helpful. The room was very small, no chair to sit on but it was clean and the bed was comfortable. The doors and shutters shut out the street noise so it was fairly quiet at night. Thick walls- could not hear anyone in other rooms. The neighborhood was a little sketchy but we still felt safe and only a block or two from major streets. We had a nice stay there.

Well priced hotel in good location. when we checked in, we were given a room w/out bath. I went back and checked reservation. It said the room came with a bath. Hotel said they didn't have any more of these rooms but would move us tomorrow. They said economy room comes with bath down hall. Hotels.com needs to get straight on this. were moved the next day into room with bathroom. But we spent one night in very cramped quarters with no bath when reservation. Pleasant, helpful hotel personnel..

Being just a few doors down from the Grand Via puts you near everything. There are several great places to eat, a small tienda and the Metro. The rooms are a bit noisy but a pair of earplugs (usual for any Spanish hostel) quiets down the noise. Great staff too. The hostal is on fl1(2nd fl for the us) and has a lift. Rooms are a bit small but very livable and clean. Has a morning coffee and a light breakfast. *****Note most areas of Madrid have many pickpockets and putas. Avoid eye contact on the street with single woman and protect yourself with a money belt.

The hotel's location was excellent in terms of accessing central Madrid and the underground railway network. The hotel was spotlessly clean with helpful staff. Our room was brightly decorated giving a bright appearance. The walls of the bedroom and corridor didn't prevent noise penetrating from adjacent areas or services meaning that disturbances occurred.

De kamer was erg gehorig, je hoort het water in alle leidingen heel lang doorlopen. De badkamer was extreem klein waardoor op de wc zitten amper mogelijk was omdat je knieeen tegen de muur aankomen. Het bed vond ik ook niet leker liggen, kussen niet lekker en bed te klein. Ook was het erg warm en slecht geïsoleerd in de kamer. Ook is de kamer niet voorzien van een waterkoker of koelkastje. Het personeel was wel erg vriendelijk en de locatie is fijn gelegen in het centrum.

Laut Internet soll spanisch und englisch gesprochen werden, leider nur spanisch. Beim Einchecken wurde man gefragt per google Übersetzer wie man bezahlen möchte. Der Gesamtbetrag wurde bereits bezahlt. Die Wände sind sehr hellhörig. Nachts wird geklingelt wovon man aufwacht. Man hört das Schnarchen anderer Bewohner. Bei der Dusche war die Duschwand nur einteilig vorhanden, bei Berührung ist es einem entgegen gefallen. Schlechte Luft da nur kleine Tür am Zimmer zum Lüften. Der Fußboden kaputt und dadurch sehr uneben. Es waren Fließen die teilweise gebrochen waren.
