Upon entering the lobby, there was a strong marijuana smell. 3 people were in the lobby and 1 person eventually passed out. Check in took forever. The night staff was having a bad day - one of the room locks malfunctioned and he and a handyman were clearly running into issues. Our initial room wasn’t ever cleaned so we went back down to the lobby. The staff got us a new room. While waiting in the lobby multiple times I noticed the guestbook left unattended with everyone’s personal info - phone, addresses, credit card info etc. I also saw where all the room codes were kept. At that point I wasn’t comfortable- someone could easily get the code to my room and steal my personal data.
The staff was friendly. The second room we got was clean. But it was an uneasy feeling. The rest of the public area - courtyard and back area are pretty run down.

Warning, they will overbook and you may not get a room if you show up late. We got the last room of the night and the couple checking in right after us got turned away even though they had also prepaid.
As far as the hotel, it’s in a good location for convenience, but it is a pretty rough neighborhood.
The staff were friendly and the room was ok. The breakfast is pretty small and you can’t really walk around in that neighborhood and find somewhere else to eat.

Great location in walking distance to downtown Miami. Staff very friendly, shout out to Zoe. In historic Miami Harlem, this cute hotel loaded with memorabilia. Many old black athletes, musicians, artists, and authors stayed there. Rooms were comfortable, clean, and the A/C sufficient. They even offered a nice breakfast snacks to start your day. We were allowed to check our bags in early, before we headed off for our cruise. The cruise port is very close to the hotel, so it is a great location for cruise travelers. I highly recommend this establishment. I give it 5 Stars across across the board for price, approximately to the cruise port/ downtown Miami, cleanliness, staff, and comfort of the rooms!….Steven Yeager

We found this little gem when we got stuck in Miami. It was just what we needed to lift our spirits. The decor was lovingly curated to capture the jazz era. We stayed in the Josephine Baker room and learned about her unique history. The bed was super comfy, the shower was hot with great pressure, and the A/C worked like a charm. The concierge was very kind and inviting. Skip the chain hotels and give this one a try!

The staff was very friendly. I have to give a special shoutout to Deborah who was very friendly and accommodating. The room sadly did have two roaches in it. I killed them myself, and thankfully there weren't any after that. The water pressure on the shower could have been better. The chair in the room had a broken leg and I couldn't sit in it. The t.v was very limiting. Those last three things were kind of minor in the grand scheme of things, but I just wanted to point that out. Otherwise the bed and pillows were great. The a.c worked well. So overall it was a net positive.

We stayed for a Lady Gaga concert that was taking place at the Kaseya Center. It’s very close to various places, usually 8-12 minutes rides. We had a lovely time, the staff are so nice and welcoming. The room was clean and the AC freezing cold, which I love. Had a wonderful time there!

If you want a comfortable hotel, with some great history on display, this is the place to stay. Some of the room/bathroom decor looked a little tired - but the hosts were very welcoming and more than made up for this and the room was very comfortable.

This is a gem of a boutique hotel. The staff is wonderful, so friendly and attentive and they go out of their way to make you feel welcome. The hotel has free parking which is almost unheard of in downtown Miami. Unfortunately, while in walking distance of the waterfront area, it’s not the best part of town. I would not necessarily feel safe walking around alone. My daughter and I stayed in the Madam CJ Walker room which was just so charming. The beds had pristine white linens and were super comfortable. We walked to the Ice Cream Museum (a highlight of our Miami experience.) For the price (I paid $170 per night during spring break) it was perfect for our Miami trip.

My room was beyond comfortable and very clean. The bed was hard to get out of. lol. It goes without saying I will definitely be coming back. I have found my new go to hotel in Miami. Did I mention the historical impact of the hotel? Go see for yourself. 10/10

Is this a 4 star hotel? No but nicely remodeled clean rooms. No issues with the room or service. Everyone was friendly and offered great advice. Location feels a step below but very close to downtown Miami. Some homeless but so does every big city. Plenty of police presence. There were people jogging and walking dogs alone. As a woman I wouldn't walk alone at night but felt just fine with my husband. During the day it was fine felt safe. 20-30 minute walk to water. 15 minutes to food and the metro station. Good place for a decent price. If you have issues with stairs this is an old building no elevator ask for a main floor room

The room was clean and ready on time, the neighborhood is clearly not a safe one you can tell as soon as you are approaching the hotel, the problem with me was that the receptionist at night big man, despite having the list of rooms that were occupied in front of him, though it was a great idea to go open my room at midnight, as a guest in a neighborhood that clearly doesn’t look safe, that can be enough to take away your peace of mind not allowing me to have a rest. Because I couldn’t not sleep after that thinking it was some other situation. As a solo female traveler I wouldn’t go back to that hotel.

We stayed at Dunns-Josephine Hotel for one night prior to our cruise, and it turned out to be a great choice. The hotel is conveniently located, only about 10 minutes from the Port of Miami, which made embarkation day stress-free.

It was a dirty room. Breakfast was a few boiled eggs which clearly were kept in the fridge from the day before and no bread, plus a few Walmart near expired snacks!

It was a dirty room. Breakfast was a few boiled eggs which clearly were kept in the fridge from the day before and no bread, plus a few Walmart near expired snacks!
The guy in the reception was nice and they had some nice artworks in the lobby and the room.

We arrived early and they kept our luggage while we explored the area. The bathroom water temperature was an issue, though. It won't stay constant so as you are taking a bath, you would have to adjust it all the time. Breakfast was very simple but I wish there was water, at least. The only saving grace is the staff was courteous and helpful.

We arrived late into what we found out later was a very unsafe area. When getting ready to leave for our cruise, my son found a needle full of brown liquid above the doorframe in the bathroom. The front desk was notified, went to the room, apologized profusely and advised they would notify the owner. When we contacted Expedia for a refund due to unsafe conditions they called the owner who denied that this even happened and the refund. Do NOT stay here. It is not safe nor quality.

Overpriced. Room was dirty, tv didn’t work, floors were wet and sticky when we entered. There were also suspicious stains on our comforter and chickens directly outside our window which woke us up bright and early. No reason for this to be priced at what it is. The photos on the website paint a totally different picture than the truth. Wouldn’t recommend.
