lovely building and setting. Public areas were well decorated and had a nice ambience. My room was in need of refurbishment; the wallpaper was peeling at the joins and the carpet was stained. But everything else was clean and the bed very comfortable. the shower was great. Would stay again.

Room was fine but basic for the price paid and the temperature of the room was very hot with no real way to turn the heating down. Staff were okay, but had little or no knowledge of the hotel and didn't really engage with guests. We tried to access the garden (as pictured), only to be told it was closed as it was winter?? in September - we have only just begun Autumn.
Breakfast wasn't included in the price from Expedia? this was an extra £20.00 for a basic self service buffet breakfast, even making your own warm (from flasks) drinks. You can of course ask for a pot of tea, but at a price.

A fantastic hotel, in an area of national historical importance. The service from everyone there is fantastic. It's a beautiful hotel where you can take a walk. You may think some areas need further maintenence but the cost maintaining Victorian Gothic style building is frankly very difficult and should get Government grants. It really is an incredible place absolutely steeped in legend and history.

Set in restful woodland setting but easy access to city
The building is old and quirky and in parts need of updates but this is compensated for by its character and it is refreshingly different from many modern hotels with corporate decor and little soul. WiFi intermittent at times . I have stayed many times and hope to stay again.

Bestwood lodge is a big old character building with nice picturesque surround but all the rooms need updating/decorating refurbishing to make them comfortable and everything working properly- all rooms need an overhaul. Also bedding - only one choice of duvet/bed linen which was very hot and so not a good night sleep.

The property itself is stunning in character being Richard III hunting lodge. But our King Charles room had only 1 heater working and its a big set of rooms. Despite asking for the other radiator to be switched on by WiFi it remained off all night and the remaining other was too low to have any effect. It was a cold night and thus did not get proper sleep. Avoided the breakfast as we have had two previously poor experiences with tepid coffee served from a flask.

Bestwood Lodge is a very old building in need of investment but for me that’s part of its charm. On the run up to my function I felt there was a bit of casualness around arraignments however on the night everything was spot on the staff were brilliant from the manager down the buffet food was spot on the venue DJ (Kes) was absolutely brilliant my accomadation was spot on. All in all my experience was very good and I would definitely use Bestwood Lodge again.

The staff were great but that’s it! The whole place was very very old, outdated, dirty and uncomfortable! Booked a twin room but was given a double room with a sofa bed without any bedding! The room was very dirty and dusty. Bathroom was awful. The outside of the building was quite impressive though!

The hotel was empty and had no character whatsoever. It is a lovely old building that has been left to go to rack and ruin. Room was dingy and I could barely move in the shower it was so small. We had breakfast this morning and were the only people in the dining room and breakfast was very poor.

We arrived late in the evening in a £15 Uber after a day at Trent Bridge. Quick, cheery check in. Quiet room, high ceilings, comfy bed, clean room, functional bathroom. Hot and cold choice at breakfast, lovely poached eggs. Shame you couldn't sit outside, but nice breakfast room. We had a short walk in the grounds to shake off a hangover, read a bit of the history of the place and then a quick check out!

Disappointing stay

It was easy to find and the building looked good with parking out front. Check in was ok. We were on the first floor. On arrival the room looked clean, but there was dirt on the chair which I brushed off and just thought it was an oversight. The bathroom was clean with new towels. We booked for dinner which was not that special and the desert we wanted and was advertised as vegan, was not, so we went without. Disappointed. The worst bit was when I pulled back the covers to get into bed and to my horror saw it was dirty with black blobs on, (thinking the dreaded bed bugs!). Took photos so you can see for yourself. I tried to phone downstairs, but as they were very busy with a wedding reception, there was no answer, So putting my jacket over my PJs I wandered downstairs, and there was someone thankfully now on reception that I could ask to change the sheets etc. He came up a few minutes later to do the change. He did ask if we wanted a nightcap on the house, but as we were already ready for bed, and I don't drink that much, we declined. Would have been nicer for a little discount tho. Don't know if we would be returning.

The faded grandeur isn’t enough

There might as well have been a ladder to get me to my room. Badly signposted, no lighting on the main stairs, more stairs to go up, to go down, to go up again. Got to the end of a musty, dated ‘antique cream’ coloured corridor to find the rooms ended in 31. I was in 32. I realised there was yet another door (that looked like a cupboard door) - I went through that, expecting to find some kind of edible delight with ‘eat me’ written on it, as the walls and ceiling performed a masterpiece of collapsing perspective.
The room was basic. No bedside lamps, a rotting window; a barely warm radiator. An awkwardly long ‘bathroom’ with an anti-tardis shower; I have seen babies dribble with more pressure. Dated wired telephones (telephones???) that had been unplugged by previous guests (who might no longer be with us) due to their audible affliction to ‘ping’.
Single use plastic bathroom cups completed the utopian experience.
Upon checkout, I was greeted with the ‘How was your stay?’ gambit, just to finish me off. Wow, that was a unique experience. I was not inclined to say “ Well….” - this chain is not, and will not do anything to make this a better place to stay. The incredible edifice they have acquired has a huge appetite for improvement to achieve a decent standard, but profit outranks any call to arms.

I wanted to fall in love with this place. It looked gorgeous on the outside and the grounds were lovely. The desk clerk was friendly checking in.
But getting to our room was difficult with luggage. Hallway turns and several doors and staircases.
The room itself was shabby. The wallpaper was peeling and it just overall looked tired.
Breakfast the next morning -- for a charge -- was not the best and the sausages gave me indigestion. I think they were a little \"off\". I had to search out a pharmacy to purchase an antacid.
Probably would not recommend.

Come for dinner, but do not stay overnight

Before I get into the experience of staying at the property, I will say that the bar/restaurant staff were amazingly helpful and friendly; the food was wonderful, as well. If I was only reviewing them, I would give it full marks.

The hotel, itself, though, was very disappointing. From the start, we were concerned, as the parking lot and surrounding green space if full of garbage and poorly cared for. Once we entered the hall near our room (17), we noticed a strong moldy, musty smell that got worse inside our room. The room itself was in need of not only a deep cleaning (the bathroom, in particular, had not been cleaned well for some time and had visible mold and built-up dust) as well as renovation (carpet stains, wallpaper stains). We stay in historic hotels whenever possible and can say with certainty that the issues were not what one would expect from a property being older, but were actually issues of poor cleaning and upkeep.

As an indicator of the shoddy state of the rooms, the bedside lamps are not plugged in, as there are no outlets and the hotel has not seen fit to bring in extension cords or other solutions, but simply leaves a non-functional light for people to suffer through.

We were only booked for one night and we were exhausted upon arrival; otherwise, we would have demanded a refund and gone elsewhere.

Save yourself the disappointment. Go for dinner, which is highly enjoyable, and stay elsewhere.

Wonderfull location and setting, Service in the evening was outstanding However morning was a different story, We came down for breakfast (as booked) the place was totally empty -No reception, No guests ,No staff in restaurant, After waiting 20 minutes with only a flask of luke warm coffee available 3 young ladies arrived into the dining room and still no staff or service and no one in reception, Searching around we found a woman who proved very rude indeed and clearly having no customer service training or intent said she had been busy elswhere and harshly demanded that I return to the dining room,there demanding we sat at the window table as we were at a table set for dinner asking which one (as there were 5 windows) she became even more and aggressive, the the 3 ladies then tried to move to window tables. which only had 2 seats,they were instructed to stay at the larger table, As a point of interest there were approx 20 tables in the room no staff no assistance and some tables with dirty linen and no cutlery , with only 5 guests requiring 2 tables was it really an issue where anyone sat? Even though we had been waiting for a very long time she took the orders for the 3 ladies and we were left to wait a further 15 minutes at which point the ladies had left that presented as breakfast and left the dining room , we thought a simple 3 egg omelette may be quick and easy, we were presented with what appeared to be a pancake base with a thick layer of cheese swimming in oil

Staff to endure that the room is cleaned. Inside thevwardrobe was dirty, the rail and the hangers. lnside the bedsides draws were dirty. The cleaner only emptied the dirty basket in the bedroom and not the one in the bathroom. The window in the bathroom was dirty. The bath was too small hence when having a
shower the curtain around the bath was touching my body when the shower was on.

Had a meal in the restaurant and the food was delicious.
The lodge is a beautiful building with lovely gardens.

Zero value for money ! The bedrooms are beyond tired . I’m amazed at what looked to be a great hotel from the outside was so poor on the inside . We paid £130 for the evening and it’s a £60 room at best . We didn’t even stay for breakfast . The hotel has been left for that long and I would estimate over 30 years that it’s probably too costly for any investor to put any money into it .

Loved our visit here!

What a special find on our road trip around England! On short notice, we were able to book a room for one night. The room was spacious and the bed comfortable. Little touches like bottled waters, biscuits, etc were nice extras. The hotel itself has an interesting history & the grounds are lovely for taking a walk, having a drink on the terrace, or just enjoying some sun. The hotel is in need of some restoration and updates, and hopefully that will happen soon so that she will shine again.The staff were so gracious and helpful, and we thoroughly enjoyed chatting with them. Dinner was delicious and we enjoyed relaxing in the lounge in the evening.

The breakfast was very basic as there was not alot of choice for us. It would help if there was more different types of bread available eg seeded or sourdough bread.

Amazing staff very helpful. Stayed with elderly mother and uncle who walked into reception with walking sticks. Receptionist immediately changed both rooms to lower level as no lift in hotel. Beds were very comfortable and had great nights sleep. Loved it so much I have booked for another stay in October.

Under new owners so give them a chance

We have good memories of this place as we honeymooned here almost 3 decades ago and daughter was married here. You have to bear in mind that this place was built in the 17th century by Charles 2nd for his mistress Nell Gywnn so the place has Class !. But it's a bit shabby around the edges although it does have location, location, location. So you can't fairly compare this hotel against boring modern rabbit hutch premises. Go for the superior named rooms though not the plain numbered also ran boxes. Only complaint we made was there were gravy stains on the breakfast milk jug. Under new mgmt having just been bought out from Best Western so give the new mgmt time to knock heads and crack the whip a bit over the staff !.

The room was OK, However, the heating was not on (electric heater provided but then room tropical or cool). The window frames need attention as there was a draft. Admittedly my stay was during a cold snap in April but the room was cool in the morning.
The hotel is in need of some maintenance but my stay was good value.

Service was great. The food was lovely, can’t fault that at all. The original building and interior is a marvel! However, the hotel resembles a cheap b&b. Broken lighting, poor interior choices that simply don’t compliment the original building. And worse of all, the room was freezing cold, I went to bed fully clothed.
This place has so much potential and should well be a luxury place to stay, however it is has some way to go before it reaches that.

Beautiful hotel, not the most comfortable though.

The location and the building itself are incredibly beautiful.

Sadly the rooms are a little dated, and we did have to complain about the fact the shower didn't initially have hot water, (this was eventually fixed). The room also had no heating which is a considerable problem when it's -2 outside. This problem wasn't fixed unfortunately, but the morning receptionist is supposed to be sorting out a partial refund to make amends for this.

All in all, I probably would stay here again if they could solve these sorts of problems before I arrive.

No better than OK.
Staff were freindly and helpful, but the hotel has a very long way to go to get any decent rating.
Old and run-down feeling as you arrive and walk in. Drinks at the bar were mostly not available (beer), food was OK.
Internet is intermittent at best, including trying to pay for things by way of a card (machine consistantly refused to connect).
Room and reception rooms dated and not cleaned very well, dirty table tops and cobwebs on lights and ceilings.
The link to 'find destination' took me via satnav to the worng side of the nearby public park, not an easy place to find and nothing near by (shops ect)
Afaid I would not recommend or saty here again.

Beautiful, historical building but hugely in need of some love & attention. Very down at heel both inside & out. Housekeeping staff need retraining as everywhere was dusty, cobwebs on fire extinguishers, dirty & stained carpets throughout hotel, black mould on grouting in bathroom. No soap in bathroom but 2 small bottles of shampoo, one half used & a previously used towel hanging on back of bathroom door. They seriously let this hotel down however reception & bar staff very friendly & helpful.

After being a drinker there & a worker I thought I’d try being a guest there.

The building and surrounding areas are superb, the staff were brilliant and some very knowledgeable about the buildings history

The room was small and ideal for my needs BUT there’s a problem I found not just in room but in other areas as well

The top of the wardrobe has a very large layer of dust on it and looked like someone had reached up at the front and run a duster over it, also the fire extinguisher near room 14 had a layer of dust that could be wiped away with a finger, another minor problem was the shower head which could do with moving to another wall rather then facing the shower door

Another thing was that the hotel/hunting lodge will be forever known King Charles Ii & Nell Gwyn yet the bar that used to be known has the Orange Bar has had its name changed to the ballroom and garden bar, maybe the Orange Bar & ballroom would have been a better alternative

All in all it’s the small things that matter in historical place like this and maybe with a lick of paint around the windows to spruce it up and a little less dust

An antique gem

We arrived at the Bestwood Lodge not knowing what to expect, a historic treat awaited. An old building which brings its own challenges and it could be a lick of paint here and there is needed if that is your focus but we were blown away by this antique treat. Whether it be the charm of the bar area sitting amongst ancient huge tapestries and mounted crossbows on the wall or the novelty of a four poster bed set in beautiful gardens this 15th century hotel is one for those who love their history. (I wont spoil it but the plaque on the wall outside gives you an idea of how long this building has been in existence.) The staff were most polite attentive and helpful. I would not hesitate in booking this hotel again. ps. breakfast was amazing!!!

Stayed over one night after attending a friend’s wedding nearby. Plenty of free parking available. Nice bar area with sofas etc. Room and en-suite were clean, but decor was tired and needed a overhaul. Our Kingsize bed was two singles pushed together. Breakfast next day was ok, pleasant dining room and lovely grounds. Staff were friendly and polite.

My review of Bestwood Lodge

We had 3 rooms at the Bestwood Lodge Hotel. The Superior rooms varied in size, bed type and are in need of a freshen up. The breakfast was very nice and there was plenty of choice.
The hotel has alot of history and is set within lovely grounds of Bestwood Park. The staff were friendly and helpful and they arranged for the front door to remain open after midnight so that we could get in. There was a query with the payment but this was quickly resolved.

What a shame....
We used to live near this hotel and stayed here while visiting friends for the weekend.I've also done wedding flowers at this hotel on several occasions.
The place needs alots of money spending on it to get it back to a relatively decent standard.
Cleaning standards need lifting, looked like some areas hadn't been cleaned for years.
On a positive.....the staff were fantastic, very friendly and helpful. Location is beautiful.

Not how it used to be.

Beautiful old historic building, in need of a bit of TLC. The rinning of the place was a different matter. Wrong room allocatikn, heatong stucl onfull and shower vold, Rooms on a monday not cleaned from a check out last Friday, no premium.larger avaliable, short staffed, hit and miss breakfast service.
Tanya and Emily were great and sorted any issues the best they could. But another staff member was just rude

disappointed To say the least

Very nice place with loads of history. The food was really good and reasonably priced drinks. The cleanliness leaves a lot to be desired. My room was full of dust and dirt.
Also my room was falsely advertised by hotels.com as it said the room had a jacuzzi spa bath. After check - in was later to be discovered this wasn’t the case and was a normal bath. The hotel manager informed me that this is a mistake and no rooms have this facility. That was the only reason I booked this room for my anniversary. And I was largely disappointed.

Lots of character - needs staff training/upgrading

Staff were thin on the ground and some not very professional, virtually no choice of wines ie 2 red and 2 white, most of the 'pump' beers were off. We were supposed to be upgraded at the request of a friend and weren't! The bathroom was freezing no radiator or towel rail, a bulb was out in the ceiling light, the handle fell off one of the drawers in the bedside cabinet and the front of the drawer off another. Food was good, and the place has a lot of character and great grounds. Unfortunately also during our stay we understand several bottles of gin went missing from a private party!!!

Good service but tired property

Good service from all the staff and clean, but property is looking very tired. Wallpaper peeling, roof leaking in main areas etc. Fine for a pit stop but not recommended for a special occasion.

Good location and staff, hotel very dated

This location is amazing and well worth and visit and the staff is welcoming and friendly. However, the rooms were not very clean, cob webs, dust, and the smell of sewage permeated the rooms. Overall an okay stay since the location and history of the building are amazing it balanced the rest a bit.

Great building and gardens, the bar area isn’t too bad but once in the room things go pear shaped, the beds are rock hard I had a linen laundry sticker stuck in the middle of my bed sheet, there was a fly buzzing around the room for hours bcos of the high ceilings I couldn’t get it there was a dead fly on the bathroom floor but the worst thing for me was the smell of the bed linen and the towels it was rank, the tv was the size of an iPad and didn’t work! There was cable trunking hanging off the wall, the lady on reception was really nice she did everything checked you in served you at the bar took the food order she needs a pay rise working there. Overall rating is 1-10

It is an unusual and historic property in lovely grounds. However, difficult to find and nasty speed humps in drive which are not illuminated, so a pain at night. Signage to the hotel is very poor. Service was good and rooms clean.

Beautiful building & grounds with fantastic staff

The staff at the bestwood lodge are so friendly and really cant do enough for you. Our room was a little \"tired' (bubbling and peeled paint on walls) but i understand theyre in the middle of a full refurb on all rooms and ours was one of the last still to be done. Its a very old beautiful building and must take immense upkeep! Nevertheless it was very clean, confortable, with all facilities, and our bathroom was fine. The wonderful staff, convenient location, good food and stunning grounds mean we will keep on returning to this gem.

A little bit of history

Lovely historic lodge in gorgeous grounds, however would recommend a room on the first floor as the stairs (no lift) to the second floor are narrow and winding making it hard to get luggage and self up them simultaneously as damage to the walls and paint work testifies. Upstairs could do with a new coat of paint generally. The bathroom has a note to say it can take a while for hot water to appear but my shower never really got hot enough. The room was fine plenty of pillows, tea and milk all very important for me and nice biscuits. Only had breakfast but that was pretty good, plenty of it and a decent choice.

Lovely building and grounds but unfortunately didn't stay long enough to enjoy it, as only stayed for one night, bed only. Didn't get chance to experience dining or bar facilities for the same reason. Sadly we were rudely awakened (room 14, 1st floor), by what we were told were the extractor fans for the kitchen below us - sounded more like an industrial boiler firing up or a jet engine, so avoid room 14. There were also a lot of, what seemed to be, dog hairs in the lounge seating area, which didn't make the relaxing areas feel very comfortable - ok if you're a dog lover I suppose, but not otherwise.

Lovely old building in beautiful grounds. Our room was on the top floor with no lift and with our old legs felt like the North Face of the Eiger!
Bar meals were enormous - more than twice what I could eat.
Breakfast was OK - average buffet with fried eggs cooked to order.
We wouldn't go there again.

Bestwood lodge.. never again.

Terribly disappointed I'm afraid, and I like to leave a good review. The rooms were very dated, the shower dribbled Luke warm water and the TV, in a big room, was about 12 inches. The breakfast was very poor that day, admittedly I didn't get down till about 8.45 but breakfast didn't finish till 9.30, it was dry and like rubber, I couldn't eat it do I decided to have a pastry. When I put it on my plate, I saw a long black hair around it, in shock I said to the staff that it wasn't mine, she just said ok and walked off. Very sorry, a big let down for BW, never stay there again. PS. The room wasn't cheap,
