The staff were lovely and the food was great. We were upgraded to a superior room, which was wonderful and clean but the room was far too hot because it was next to the main working fireplace of the hotel. We had to have the window open the whole time to cool down, (but didn’t make too much difference in temperature) and then smoke from the chimney came into the room.

There is no parking for this hotel, my car had to be left in an open communal car park overnight, which I wasn’t happy about.
The staff are very friendly & accommodating, especially the head waiter in the restaurant & the chap managing the bar.
My room wasn’t vacuumed daily but bathroom was cleaned very well.

Room lovely but fire alarm went off at 7am as they have sensitive fire alarm and someone burnt toast, if it’s this sensitive prehaps don’t allow customers to do toast! Also the head waiter at breakfast very shouty and loud to the other servers who were working well, it was not needed and actually quite embarrassing to watch, feel sorry for the poor waiting staff

We’ve just had a fantastic stay at The George. The interiors and finishes are beautiful, and the room was incredibly spacious, especially the bathroom, which featured a stunning freestanding copper bath.

The customer service from Maddison and the rest of the team was excellent; everyone was friendly, helpful, and attentive. We absolutely loved our stay and would highly recommend it.

Brendan on reception was very welcoming on arrival and helpful. Even took our luggage to our room before we returned after we left it with him on arrival.Junior suite room was clean and spacious although could have done without all the pretend doves perched around the room.Bed was pretty uncomfortable and pillows were feather and too soft. The hotel is alledgedly famed for it's breakfast which is definitely no different to what one would expect at any hotel. What never ceases to amaze is the fact that guests are expected to queue up to use two toasters whilst their meal is getting cold. Additionally you have to use a computer screen to make your own tea & coffee. Who can be bothered? Hotel is advertised as having parking available. What is not mentioned is that the parking is in an unmanned regular town carpark which is a 10 minute walk away, so you must either carry your luggage up hill back to the hotel or park on double yellow lines outside the hotel as we did to unload first, then take the car to the car park and then make your way back.It's really not worth the effort.Many better hotels available.

The George hotel in Rye offers a charming stay with a central location and helpful staff. The comfortable beds and a delicious breakfast were definite highlights. Its bar is also great, boasting a fantastic atmosphere. However, our (entry level) room was a little on the small side. Despite the cozy quarters, the hotel provides a very pleasant and enjoyable experience.

The breakfast was lovely although I would have preferred freshly made coffee from a pot rather than from a machine operated via an iPad - but that is personal preference. Service was generally sketchy but Harry on reception was excellent, efficient and seriously on the ball. The food was very good. Easy check in process. We were walked to our room and everything explained to us. Room was well decorated and clean. Tea, coffee and biscuits in room. Bottled water too. As it was warm we had the windows open therefore there was some noise from the courtyard and street. This was quiet between 11pm and 7am (Sunday night). Great quality breakfast with friendly staff. Continental pastries, toast, fruit, yoghurt, etc. Hot menu options also available. Easy check out process. Would recommend.

The hotel is centrally situated, close to the train station and at the center of Rye, a most charming historically preserved town with houses reflecting six centuries of life in Sussex. Despite the history of The George Hotel, it has all the amenities, a wonderful restaurant and patio, a made to order breakfast, nice rooms with a tv with cable and radio which plays BBC, jazz and classical music, a shower with great water pressure, an Italian coffee press and fresh coffee and an assortment of high quality teas. The staff is helpful, friendly and gracious. It was quite perfect.

Worst night's stay

Worst night's stay we've ever had. Shame because the room and hotel were nice.
Checked in and informed there was a wedding taking place, not a problem. Got to our room off the courtyard and part of the wedding party were sitting in front of our door, had to ask them to move to get in. Not an issue but was awkward. Advised courtyard would be closed and no one allowed in it after 10pm.
People in the courtyard sat right outside our door until 11.30pm, drunk and loud, we could hear their whole conversation as if they were in our room. I called reception twice with no answer. I then had to ask them to keep the noise down myself. Went quiet for 30mins or so, then noise started again and carried on until 1.30am. Again, we had to ask them to keep the noise down ourselves. Finally had some quiet, then staff started clearing glasses and moving chairs loudly at 7.30am followed by power washing the patio. THE worst night we have ever had, little to no sleep on a Sunday night. Not a problem there was a wedding but the hotel should not have allowed our room to be booked or at least should have ensured there was no noise after 10pm as they had stated.
Spoke to duty manager next day and were offered dinner in the hotel, not good enough. Advised general manager would contact me. Nothing heard for 4 days after check out. I emailed with complaint and got a 'sorry' email back but no offer of refund for first night which should have been offered given we had no sleep. Very disappointing.

The George is a lovely hotel, but the staff and rooms really let it down. We were hosted in a \"cosy\" room which really lived up to it's name, being so tiny we could barely move and with a double that the wife and I could barely move in. The room was directly above the bar so extremely noisy, but most of all it was like an oven in there with no Aircon. Pretty unbearable. At breakfast, which was distinctly average I had to ask 4 separate times for some sauce to go with my meal. Truly a poor experience

Disappointed and underwhelmed

We stayed at The George for a few days away. This was over the hottest few days of the year. Our room was on the very top floor (attic). The room was very small with a small window which faced the sun. As you climbed the stairs (no lift), you could feel the air getting hotter and hotter. The heat was unbearable with only a small fan 'for comfort'. No one checked in during our stay to see how we were coping.

We ate at The Grill restaurant one night. The menu was limited, confused and overpriced.

Breakfast was a buffet but felt 'mass produced' with staff delivering hot foot arriving before you'd completed cereal. It felt like we were in the way and staff were trying to get us out asap.

We had been so looking to our stay at The George as we'd eaten there few years ago. But we left disappointed and underwhelmed.

Lovely property .. great location in heart of Rye. We stayed in a cosy room .. it was fab, beautiful decor and great facilities. Great breakfast nice bar. Staff were great but in particular a great duo on reception ( didn’t get names) but a blonde lady so accommodating allowing us to leave bags before checking in, so we could explore Rye and an Australian male that impressed us in returning a missed phone call before arriving and ensuring we had a pleasant stay. Beautifully decorated, property has character and very friendly staff. Great views from the room. Nice lobby and restaurant. Room was rather warm and couldn’t sleep or rest well unfortunately as it was warm and the mattress too soft. Windows had to be kept open with flies coming in. For the rate it was a little disappointing to be placed on the top floor far end with a small infant but appreciated the views. Cots are being charged extra but was rather small. Restaurant staff were amazing and food was okay. Parking was a short walk away. Overall good.

A lovely hotel in a lovely little town. It's centrally situated, so it's very easy to reach shops, restaurants, bars, buses, the railway station and the Thursday morning market.
We booked a \"cosy\" room, but on arrival were lucky enough to be upgraded to a \"classic\". It was spacious, attractive, comfortable and spotlessly clean. There was a bathtub in the bedroom, which personally I dislike (though I know other hotels have similar arrangements). That said, the bathroom included a good-sized walk-in shower, which was perfect.
The only other (minor) quibble concerned the carpet on the hotel's corridor and stairs. It has the type of geometric, Escher-type pattern that makes it hard for oldies such as my partner and I to judge the depth of stairs when walking down. (Younger people won't have a clue what I'm talking about.)
Our room overlooked the courtyard, where people were sitting out, but it wasn't noisy at all.
Breakfast was freshly cooked, tasty and plentiful.
All the staff we met were very pleasant and helpful. We'd like to give a special mention to the lovely Madison at reception, who went out of her way for us.

What a treasure Rye has with The George. Extremely well located, about a 10 minute walk (albeit some uphill) from the station parking, a lovely old building that's in good condition. We went at low season so Rye was quiet (great for us, albeit some businesses were closed for staff vacations...not a problem), and very walkable. We enjoyed several small pubs which felt very cosy and welcoming in the cooler nights. Strongly recommended.

I had been really looking forward to our stay at The George in Rye and it was a good experience, although not fabulous in anyway, and incredibly over priced. I had thought for the Money there would be fabulous service, wonderful amenities, delicious breakfast etc and a luxe feel in all the communal areas. Everything was fine to good.

There were two weddings when we
Stayed which made the whole place noisy and chaotic - not as relaxing & romantic as we had hoped! Therefore we spent all of our spare time out of the hotel and did not even eat there.

The room was lovely but I expected there to be more in terms of elegant touches and attention to detail.

We paid over £300/ night for The George, which is incredibly expensive but I thought we would be getting our monies worth.

My partner and I discussed and we felt that £200/ night for the luxe room and breakfast would have been more appropriate.

Our room was very grubby, dirty carpet, a substantial amount of dust had accu lated behind the door, the firedoor mechanism impeded the opening of the wardrobe. The window looked directly into the gentlemans shop opposite if you wanted Privacy the curtains needed closing the whole day. The whole room felt grubby and uncomfortable. So much potential

This beautiful late medieval property has it all - in theory. The bar and restaurant areas are gorgeous with wood burners cosy corners. The staff seemed constantly stressed though, I got twice the wrong breakfast and the room was beyond tiny and tiny with staples like the TV really complicated to use (you need an Apple account). You can't beat the location but would probably look for another abode next time in Rye.

We stayed at The George Inn in a luxury room, which was spacious, clean, and well-appointed. The larger bath was a great touch, and the provided dog bed was a nice extra. The bar had a nice atmosphere, and the in-room amenities were excellent.

However, a few things let the experience down. Despite being dog-friendly, we weren’t allowed to have breakfast in the main restaurant with our well-behaved dog and were instead placed in a dimly lit section of the bar. This felt unnecessarily restrictive, especially when so many nearby cafés welcome dogs.

Breakfast itself was disappointing. The coffee was from a push-button machine, and the food was underwhelming. The continental selection was limited, the full English lacked flavor, and the smashed avocado on toast was a brownish purée, overly salted and clearly prepared in advance.

Another downside was the £50 per night dog fee, which felt excessive. A flat £50 for the stay would be far more reasonable.

Although breakfast was included, we wouldn’t recommend it. We skipped it on our second morning and found much better options nearby, such as The Fig and Whitehouse.

Overall, The George Inn offers great rooms and a nice atmosphere, but the poor breakfast, high dog fees, and restrictive dog policy at breakfast let it down.
