The staff was friendly and welcoming and really made it an enjoyable trip. Our room was spacious and had a beautiful view. The breakfast buffet was amazing and the restaurant was delicious as well. I would definitely recommend this hotel to families. The beach was a bit of a difficult walk and the beach is rocky but we enjoyed ourselves. Loved staying here!

Our experience was delightful! Beautiful views from the restaurant! I like the idea of separate swimming pools. One for family and the other one for adults. We had a stand room with the view of the jungle towards the street. The beds were firm which was uncomfortable first nights. But I loved to hear the early birds and the howling monkeys! We also stayed the night in a superior ocean view to experience the difference. I could hear the air conditioning sound off the second floor next to the balcony. It was annoying to me. Pro is the ocean view and restroom size and perhaps better bed. I prefer the standard room looking towards the jungle! I wish it was all inclusive hotel. Since it was not, we ate at the local restaurants and used Uber. I would return to this hotel. Everyone was friendly! Pura Vida!

I came to celebrate my graduation with my two best friends, and I absolutely fell in love with the views from the hotel. Most importantly, the staff was genuinely and honestly super kind and helpful. Jael at the front reception was so helpful with ordering us taxis and giving us information. The bartenders, Sydney and Derek, were top-notch, and we absolutely loved the happy hour special and the delicious mint mojitos. Also, a huge shout-out to Johnny for always giving us fresh towels and making us laugh every time we passed by. I will definitely be coming back soon. Thank you Shana for a memorable trip that I will never forget

The staff is so friendly and helpful. We fished one day during our stay and caught a yellow fin tuna. We brought some back, after giving some to our crew, and they prepared it for us. My son and husband said it was delicious. The property is beautiful and there is access to a beach but be prepared for a hike down.

This is a 3 star hotel, rooms and bathrooms should be renovated but most importantly the property should have a back up plan for energy cuts. we had a terrible night with no AC due to electricity problems and the property has no back up plan for such an emergency.
On the positive side, breakfast is good and the access to the beach is a plus versus other hotels in the area.

the location was very beautiful with great food. The staff were always on hand and were quick to provide great service when needed. The land itself is a bit difficult to walk around because of so many hills(even going from the rooms to the pools is a hill) but there are several golf carts to help carry people around when required. The hotel is a 10 minute walk from a wonderful cove with a small reef and kayaking. A great vacation overall

The staff were incredible and location was pretty convenient. The viewpoint was decent too. The trail to the beach was not maintained as well. There were fallen branches and we struggled quite a bit. Also for how expensive it was, there were no welcome drinks. Our room was on the 1st floor and it did not smell good in the corridors.

We stayed in room 206 on the lowest floor and had the best time! The breakfast in the morning was top notch! Coffee tasted great! The service at Shana was impeccable!
We saw monkeys, iguanas, lizards, sloths, crabs, macaws, ant eater! We ventured off at night to the beach with headlamps and saw so many critters! We ate at EL ANGEL sodas (10 min drive from SHANA) AMAZING PRICE N FOOD

Le restaurant est absolument à éviter… nous resté 10 jours au Costa Rica et nous sommes allés dans tous les types de restaurants.. du plus chic ou traditionnel, le restaurant est de loin le pire où nous sommes allés. Pour le prix, nous ne retournerions pas à cette hôtel.

The hotel can be challenging if you have mobility issues as there are no elevators but they have carts if you need them on the steep inclines. Good location, beach is nice and not as hard to get to as some reviews said. Breakfast was great and included. Meals were good but I recommend venturing out for a few meals. La Cantina didn't disappoint. Loved our stay overall and would come back.

Pros: Staff is phenomenal and friendly. The breakfast was pretty good, the outdoor pools and bar were picturesque. Everything was clean. The private beach is great. Location is in a great area. Johnny was really helpful setting up yours too.

Cons: Not a huge issue, but the room could have been maintained better. Lock to the balcony was broken. Some light fixtures needed replacing and the furniture like end tables were worn. No microave in the room either.

The perfect hotel for a romantic, fun getaway. The mountainside location and lush rainforest surroundings- plus an easy jaunt to a beautiful beach make this the perfect hotel to experience Quepos, Playa Baisanz, Manuel Antonio National Park and tons of nearby restaurants, shops, etc. The restaurant was great- breakfast buffet, dinner- everything. Can't wait to return.

Great hotel. Immaculate room, great choice at breakfast, pools were lovely and the bar staff and selection were great. Views over the trees to the coast were exceptional and great for spotting toucans and passing monkeys.
Hotel is on a steep hill and golf buggy lifts up and down are available if mobility is a challenge.
We had a great massage in the spa and the desk for tours ecetera was really helpful.
On site restaurant is good. The main village is a taxi ride away for more choice. (Steep road and no pavement make walking a bad choice).
We LOVED being so close to the small beach (which dissapears at high tide!). Gorgeous walk down, beautiful small sandy beach and warm waters for swimming.
We were in a an 'interior' view room (for budget reasons) which felt quite overlooked by the road and the shop, so pay a bit more for privacy. There was also no comfy seating in the room (no room with the two double beds) . A more expensive room would probably have better seating options - especially those with balconies.

We had a great time at Shana. We got an ocean view room with a beautiful view on the 3rd floor. We had enough space and everything was very clean. Breakfast was a good variety and pretty tasty. The pools were great - it was especially nice having a quieter adult pool. The beach is a short 10 minute walk downhill. It might be a bit harder if you have mobility restrictions. The hotel is hilly, which wasn't a problem for us. They have golf carts running around giving people rides if they have mobility restrictions. Overall the staff was always very friendly and helpful, and we had an amazing time here.

Our five-night stay at Shana was an absolute disaster, and I would never return under any circumstances. After staying at a wonderful hotel in La Fortuna, we ended up here.

The level of filth at this hotel is shocking. The restaurant is downright disgusting and has dirty bathrooms, a grimy, dingy kitchen, and bugs crawling over roughly 25% of the tables. We tried eating there three times (against our better judgment), and twice had to get up and move because of the infestation. To make matters worse, I got food poisoning from the restaurant, which left me violently ill all night and ruined an entire day of my vacation. After talking with other guests, it became clear this wasn’t an isolated incident, another woman also got food poisoning, and one couple flat out warned us to avoid eating there altogether.

The room wasn’t any better. Bugs were constantly getting in, and it took days to figure out why. We eventually discovered about a one inch gap between the wall and the air conditioning unit, which led to a massive hole in the wall, something that never should have been overlooked. On our final night, we found a cockroach crawling on the wall which I had to kill (I have pictures). Completely revolting.

This place is dirty, poorly maintained, and clearly doesn’t care about basic hygiene or guest safety. I booked this stay based on recommendations through Expedia, and after this experience, I feel completely misled and no longer trust their recommendations going forward.

The view from the room was fantastic. The interior of the room was comfortable, except for the pillows (they were very flat). The staff were friendly. The hotel is built on a very steep hill and if you have any issues with walking it could be difficult. They do have an electric cart but not always a person manning it or it’s not around. The water pressure seems to disappear at night, so I was unable to get a drink of water or flush the toilet late at night. The toilets lack water pressure which clog easily. Walls are thin and I could hear neighbors conversing. They don’t allow persons not staying at their hotel to come onto the property. I had a situation where my son who was staying next-door came over to get some medication from me and the hotel staff weren’t allowing him to come to my room. They did finally agree to allow him enter with a security escort (who stayed with him until he left the property). Needless to say the rest of my family staying next-door didn’t want to come over for a meal at their restaurant as they didn’t feel welcome on the property. If you order a pizza delivered to your room, make sure you ask for plates, silverware, and napkins as they don’t bring it with the food. Their breakfast buffet was better than other hotels I stayed at in Costa Rica. It would be nice if they provided a ride up the hill to the main street so we could catch the bus. We had to call a taxi or an Uber to get up there each time. Also, parking is tight (and limited).

This property is stunning. It's one of the only hotels in the area with direct access to a beach. Our time at Shana was extremely relaxing and enjoyable - everything from the pool, to the daily happy hour, the included breakfast, and helpful front desk was top notch. They even went above and beyond to help us book memorable excursions. Couldn't recommend this hotel more!

This property is set on a very steep street. Walking from bottom (beach access) to top will leave you drenched in sweat given the heat and humidity. The beach has private access but it is a bit far and again very steep. Parking is horrendous due to steep incline and tight spaces. If you love parallel parking on a steep street, you will leave this. Rooms are nice enough and breakfast is excellent.

We arrived late and got a warm welcome from the night staff. Our room, was downstairs, at the end of the building, huge, and spotlessly clean. The bathroom was a good size and split up from the bedroom by a handy dressing area. We had a balcony, our view was small, with some garden, the jungle and next to the path down to the beach (quite steep, takes 5- 10 minutes to walk down to beach , 10 minutes+ to get back). I was initially disappointed by the view, but grew to love it. We saw squirrel monkeys, capuchin monkeys, at very close range - definitely follow the hotel advice, the monkeys are entertaining but naughty. We also heard and saw so many birds. It was quiet and very relaxing. The restaurant was where we got the best views of the ocean and the jungle, we could spend a long time up here, aided by a good breakfast and lovely staff. The pool areas were great. Not big pools, but they weren't packed. Lovely views. Lovely cocktails (a lot cheaper in the town of Manuel Antonio - but then you weren't lazing by the pool) and attentive staff. The whole hotel is built on a steep hill, they have a trolley-car to take you up to the restaurant, pool or reception. Everyone was super friendly and helpful. Booking tours was also very easy. I would happily return to this beautiful spot.

Loved this property. We had an ocean view room on the 2nd floor in building 3. The property is small and on a steep incline, but has everything you need. They have a small store, a pool with outdoor bar, outdoor restaurant, and walkway to the beach. Walk to beach is about 5 minutes and steep. Wear shoes. Due to the incline the property sits on, golf carts are available to drive you from your room to pool/restaurant, though its only about 20 yards. We walked each time with no problems. Included breakfast offered a great variety of foods and tasted great. All staff, except one parking lot attendant, was exceptional and went above and beyond. Sydney at the restaurant and bar made our stay fantastic! He was the best! View of ocean and mountains from pool and restaurant is beautiful. Monkeys and birds seen multiple times a day.

Just got back from a stay at Shana. Both the property and staff were fantastic. They went out of their way to help us… with things related to coming and going, setting up outings for the day that kind of thing. They are responsive to questions asked over the net/expedia which is something other places are not. Much appreciated. Also much appreciated is their handling of our late check in and check out.

The hotel is on a fairly steep hill, so bear that in mind if mobility impaired… that going from your room to the pool/restaurant/reception might be tricky. This is offset by the golf carts that staff regularly have on hand to drive people up and down the hill, much appreciated by my mobility impaired wife. There is a beach that is walkable from the hotel, there are tents and chairs available to rent there along with kayaks and other equipment. It is swimmable and it is snorkel-able (not as clear as I am used to but still very nice to be able to do from the properly). The restaurant is great, the food fantastic and the service quite attentive.

I only have smaller things to be constructive about related to the kitchenette part of our room, like the stove not being levelled and one of the clips for the top of the fridge’s water dispenser missing.

It was a great time, the kids loved it and would readily recommend it. I actually just spent the wait before the last flight telling another family about how nice it was.

The ocean was visible from the restaurant and pool. Great food at the restaurant. We had the Tico Roll, hamburger, Hawaiian pizza cooked in a wood fire oven and a chicken wrap. All were splendid. Excellent choices at the breakfast buffet. Lovely maintained pool with a bar that had a happy hour. The only drawback was the steep walk to our room, to the beach or to get to the main road which was a km away. It didn't bother us but if you don't like a challenge grab a can. Rides in a golf cart we're provided if needed. Beach was excellent but wear swim shoes because of the lovely lava rock. Plenty of restaurants within the km. The staff was extremely friendly. So happy with our choice.

We loved this place! Very charming and beautiful, highly recommend for families but not necessarily for couples or friends. Only things missing from the hotel: a gym and a bit more of a daytime vibe/activities (Yoga, workout classes, etc) and maybe some entertainment. The venue closed down very early every night, so perfect for those looking for a quieter experience. Although the location is incredible and full in nature: we had monkeys visit us everyday! :)

Room was spacious with beautiful ocean view, just like the picture in the ads. The monkeys coming up to our patio was an unexpected extra. Golf cart driver was always around to offer trips up the STEEP hills from beach access, restaurant, and pools to guest rooms, though we preferred getting the workout. Pools were glorious. Beach pretty nice, though I'd recommend the better beaches inside park or outside park entrance. Staff went out of their way to get us a national park tour after an initial miscommunication canceled our reservation. Staff were wonderful all around. My only complaint is that the area around the hotel was not walkable and it was difficult to get to the nearby restaurants and music clubs without a taxi.

Bathroom was terrible. Flushing toilet was a challenge and requested maintenance did not solve the issue. Poor maintenance of toilet, sink faucets bent and spray all over. Very dark tile and poor lighting - almost impossible to put on make-up, etc. Breakfast buffet had a lot of options but very average in quality. TV sound was terrible. Room clean. Gorgeous views. Staff was helpful driving guests up and down from facilities to room since hotel is on a very steep incline (their pleasant nature would be the highlight). Overall, just an average hotel with a beautiful view.

We stayed 3 days: 2 days in the Jungle View and then switched to an Ocean View on the last day (paying a high premium that wasn't worth it).
Let's start with the Pros: The staff was extremely friendly and helpful, always with the best attitude and smile; the access to the beach was beautiful, and the beach itself was one of the best in the Manuel Antonio/Quepos area.
Cons: Both rooms had a high level of mildew, the AC unit didn't work, and it was blowing air with a terrible smell. We called reception, and they sent a technician who fixed it, but the smell persisted for the next 12 hours until it was gone or we got used to it. The room has a weird layout showers in one side, toilet in a different room, you have to walk from one side to the other if you wanted to use both, there is a huge kitchen taking about 60% of the space of the room with a tiny closet, if we can call it closet, the jungle view is just a green wall of trees.
The food was terrible below average, the restaurant area was overcorwded and not by people but by exess furniture we cannot open the chair of the table without hitting the table next to it if both chairs where out, the serving area was way to small, and the taste of the food was also as bad, the view from the rooms is not as advertise, the ocean view (at least the one we received) has a bit of the view and wasnt that great as advertise.
I will never stay in this hotel again and will not recommend it to anyone.

We loved staying at the Shana by the Beach. Highlights included our room (we had an amazing oceanfront view with double king beds, kitchen and a balcony with dining table), the pool area (has an adults-only side with infinity pool view of the ocean, though it’s a little small, and a 2 for 1 happy hour from 3-6 pm daily), delicious complimentary breakfast (however, they serve the same dishes daily and might consider changing it up a little), and abundant hotel wildlife like white faced and squirrel monkeys and Toucans. Amenities were clean and the staff was friendly and attentive. There is also a jungle path (7-10 minute walk) down to Playa Biesanz, which is a small public beach nestled in a cove (bring water shoes as it’s a little rocky and cash for drinks and snacks). Playa Espadilla (public beach) is also only a 10-minute Uber ride, and in my opinion the nicest of the four local beaches I visited, even Manuel Antonio Beach. A few suggestions or things I learned: (1) per my research, we rented a car but should have just got a shuttle from the airport to Manuel Antonio, (2) driving around Manuel Antonio is hectic with windy roads and tight spaces, so ubering is inexpensive and hassle-free since restaurant are close; and (3) the monkeys that live around the resort will open your balcony door, so keep it locked. Overall, I would recommend this resort for its location to Manuel Antonio Park, abundance of local restaurants, and its room and restaurant/pool views of the ocean.

We had an amazing stay! Clean room, yummy restaurant, lovely beach accessible, cool pool, stunning views, crazy monkeys for entertainment, and market available with snacks and essentials. We arrived to a gift of wine in our room, and the staff was very friendly and helpful. With the gated entrance, we felt very safe, but the whole area seemed safe and walkable (if you can do those steep inclines!). We’d love to stay again!

Clean rooms and grounds. Friendly staff. Good food. Wash cloths we could have been appreciated, but we saw this at another place, maybe they don't use them? The view from our room was beautiful! And we loved the monkeys every morning on our bAlcony. But watch your things! The walk to the beach is not the easiest but we did enjoy the beach. The pools, restaurant, bar and staff are great.its on a very steep hill so beware of that but staff will golf cart you up and down if desired.

Very cozily decked up for the holidays! The guest service staff were very helpful. They helped us with day tours booking for various activities. Comfortable and luxurious stay. Overall enjoyed our stay. Property is on a steep hill, which I enjoyed but may not be suitable for everyone.

+ Bed was comfortable, AC worked great and was quiet, balcony had a nice view, shower had good pressure, room was clean, pool looked nice but not really a pool person, free parking

= Breakfast food was okay, staff were nice, no elevators to upper floor

- Monkeys stealing food at breakfast (fun the first time and the staff does a good job at trying to scare them off), shower drain was really loud, bathroom was mostly clean but possibly in the middle of a remodel, walk to \"Hidden Beach\" was charming but the beach itself was covered in beach chairs for sell and loud music at 8am in the morning.

The property has tight parking. My son was playing in the pool and got cut in his foot. The staff \"examined\" the pool and found nothing. Rooms were ok. There is a small pathway that takes you to a beach. The beach was a bit rocky so it wasn't as pleasant to play in for kids.

Evelyn from reception was great. The spa was great. The restaurant and bar (specifically the bartender by the pool) were not great. Food was expensive, but flavorless. We had enjoyed our stay here in Costa Rica and this was the last place we would stay at for our week trip..
The bartender seemed bothered every time we ordered, and was always short with me even when I tried going out of my way to purchase something else to leave a tip on the card.

The restaurant, we ordered sushi. I love sushi and I don’t think I’ve ever complained nor sent back sushi. When I called the restaurant to return a a plate I DID NOT EAT because of the way it made me feel (I ordered two of the same plates) I was met with a defensive manager saying refunds were not allowed and that since the chef said the food came out okay, I have no other choice but to eat it or not.

What he did offer, was a bottle of wine or a “couple of beers” to compensate. But I stated since I was not feeling well, that these options did not sound appealing and I would rather speak with the general manager tomorrow morning before checkout.

We spoke with her. I was not satisfied with the end result of the conversation nor her customer service. Every time she spoke, I let her finish. Whereas she would cut me off and say “sorry no refunds.” Basically saving I did not have a good enough reason. Will not be back
