This small island was convenient with just a short ferry ride to the boardwalk in town. The property is an older property with its own beach. The beach was a bit rocky under the water but it was very nice to relax on the beach. Some of the staff when you check in are not that attentive and dont bother trying to check in early as you will have to wait until 3 pm. The property is under renovation and should be beautiful when done. It was fine for a 1 night stay

Rooms are advertised as having air conditioning but over our week there, we had to be moved between three rooms due to the AC not working. Very frustrating not to mention hot. The staff is hit or miss at the front desk. They could definitely learn people skills better. Housekeeping and the bar employees were great.

The room was old and in need of a facelift and new mattresses. There was mold and mildew on walls etc.I was not told I'd have to lug my suitcase up 3 floors. We were given another room that was somewhat better but still terrible. There was no in phone in the room. We had to go to the office to request a third towel. An hour later we went down to the office to make a second request . We were told the desk person didn't know where the towels were kept.

Outdated and under remodeling but my room was Clean comfortable and friendly. The beach, beach bar and rolling smoke are fantastic. I look forward to going back when the construction is over. The kitchenette was a must have for my grandkids in the morning. I sure hope they don’t get rid of it.

The beach is wonderful. We frequent St. Croix, yearly. And I always wanted to give this place a chance. We did not have bath towels or beach towels available to us for our stay. How are you supposed to even take a shower? And they just expected us to be OK with it. That is a simple necessity. The TV did not work in the room, which would’ve been helpful to relax our children at night. I would go back just to experience the bar, but I would never stay at the hotel again.

Fire alarms chirping continuously due dust from construction. Patio door didn't lock and had to be lifted to open or closed. Light bulbs burnt out leaving room poorly lit. Maintenance under staffed. No path to roll luggage requiring to lift heavy luggage up three flights of stairs. Not senior friendly.

I had asked for a ground floor room when I booked the reservation, I told them I was coming in late and would not make it to the hotel until after 11 PM, I was told that is no problem, there is always someone there. When I arrived and rode the water taxi to the hotel the office was closed the driver of the boat said there is no one there to give me a room. I said can you call somebody and have them come help. He said I am supposed to help you but I don't know how. I told him everything was supposed to be arranged and ready for my arrival, and he said that he could get the information and the key and let me in and I would have to check in with them in the morning. He tried to give me a room on the third floor that they had reserved for me but I told him I was unable to use the stairs since there was no elevator. After a long struggle we ended up with a room on the ground floor. The room was not great, everything was very chipped up. The sliding door to the balcony was trashed and there was no seal frame on the fixed glass and when you opened the door the frame fell out. The beach is nice, but it is public and it is quite often full of drunken sailors or locals. The hotel is in Mid restoration so there is construction everywhere. The people are very nice but the room Wi-Fi or TV we're not functioning, so everything was done via Cell Phone instead of having available Wi-Fi. I called every single day to have it repaired and was assured that it would be fixed. It was never fixed

1.housekeeping needs to be done daily instead of every other day.it’s the beach and who wants sand in their bed. Biggest gripe also is beach towels. There were never any clean ones. We went 4 days with the same towel. On fifth day early that morning I was requesting clean beach towels and they just kept saying they are at the laundry. Finally they brought us towels after dark. Why in the world would it take 5 days to get clean towels?
2. Stairwell behind the bar that takes you to 3 rd floor needs lights working. It was completely dark and it is a trip/ fall hazard. They also need to be clean daily.
3. This place has potential to be a 5 star resort if they would just put more work ethic into the place. Love the island and the views from the rooms are amazing.

I stayed at Hotel On the Cay in St. Croix and my experience was extremely disappointing from the moment I arrived. My room was not cleaned at all — there were used cups, sand everywhere, and the hot water barely worked. The room also had holes and rust on the walls, which made it feel extremely neglected.

On my last day, the water went out for over 5 hours, and the hotel couldn’t even offer guests access to another room to shower at their second property. The staff was rude, unhelpful, and didn’t seem to care about the issues guests were dealing with.

The ferry, which they claim runs every 5 minutes, was actually running once every hour, causing long waits and wasted time. To make things worse, they even charge guests for beach chairs on their own beach, which is ridiculous.

This was by far the worst hotel experience I’ve ever had. I will never return, and I do not recommend this hotel to anyone.

Room was clean, the young lady with the multicolored glasses was extremely nice!! The hotel is outdated but clean. The only issue is that I had to wait for the room I actually paid for...but they made an effort. Also the AC was leaking in the room but it was on my last day, so I was not really bothered. Yes I would return, knowing what to expect. The hotel has a nice beach and tasty wings.

The staff was friendly but uninformed. We miss our original check in date due to transportation issues. We informed the front desk that we would arrive the next morning. The front desk attendant was unaware of our late check-in. We received our keys a proceeded to this dilapidated facility. The little island was. Cute but the state of the property was worse than terrible. We should have been informed that the property was under that kind of renovation. It needs a whole new overhaul. And the state of the pull out bed was a negative star. We also were not informed that we needed a number to call to get the ferry back to the hotel after midnight. My sister were stuck off property until a local man saw my sister in distress and called someone who called someone. Meanwhile I walked around that entire property and there was no one. Not the ferry driver, not security, not anyone on that property that I could see and the front desk was closed. Worse stay ever and I've been traveling for 40+ years. Two thumbs down.

This hotel doesn't offer anything complimentary other than a beach chair (I also got a free umbrella due to my week stay. Not sure if it was a special deal). My second time staying here. I picked it because its on the BEAUTIFUL Protestant Cay. Theres a great beach bar and grill. I will say I'm disappointed with the cleanliness. Dust and debris in 2 rooms before I got to the 3rd room that I ended up staying in. Disgusting dusty wicker chairs. Such a shame. They are doing construction which attributes to the dust and dirt. The King Christian hotel seems much nicer ans ypu still have the same access to everutbing on the strip amd to the beach.

This property is unique as it is on its own separate island (cay) off of St.Croix. Access is by a small ferry that is quite efficient in its pick up and drop off services.

The guest check in experience was great and the host was very friendly and knowledgeable about the area.

There is a small gift shop onsite that has a few essentials.

The beach is at your footsteps and a great bar and restaurant (grill) on the property as well.

The rooms are clean and accommodating and does have all the advertised amenities (including iron and ironing board).

The Wi-Fi situation leaves a lot to be desired and often drops in and out. Can you watch Tik Tok? Yes. Can you watch a movie? NO!!! Can you make WhatsApp or FaceTime call? Yes, BUT it will buffer and reconnect OFTEN!

WiFi aside it’s worth a try if you are game to have a unique experience. Fun fact there are iguanas on the cay 🙂

Location was nice. But many lights were out making it unsafe to see as we arrived in the evening after dark. Staff was not helpful and even seemed bothered when asked simple questions as to who we see to show our room key so we can get the complimentary lounge chairs at the beach. Water taxi drivers were all very nice and courteous. Staff at the onsite grill was great also. Had a great view of a scaffold directly outside our balcony that didn't get used the entire 4 days we were there. Limited help, limited maintenance. This place has lots of potential but sadly falls short.

T treated my family to a short weekend stay at the Kay and it was lovely. The beach was beautiful and the bar alive with guest. The room was spacious enough to enjoy the beach weekend and had the basic essentials for our short stay. However, the old-empty water fountain & pool outside were eye sores, obstructing out view of the beach. But overall the beach was beautiful and for a short family stay the price was not too bad.

We stayed one night at Hotel on the Cay so we could catch the sunrise at point udall. The property is under renovation so the pool was closed. They are working on remodeling guests rooms also. They only food was at a beach bbq shack but the food was very good. Not many guests so it was very quiet and we had an Amazing view of ocean. A complementary water taxi takes you from town to the hotel. It is very close to all the bars, restaurants and night life. We would go back and stay again.

A perfect place if you need to relax, we had such a great time!
The hotel is undergoing some major renovations, so don't expect luxuries but our bed was comfortable, the room and bathroom were clean. The beach was steps down from our room and not crowded! And the view from our balcony - priceless.
We didn't really care for a glamorous hotel with a pool (didn't matter that it was closed), we wanted a beautiful beach, do some snorkeling and unwind. And this is what we had.

Long and short, time AC didn't work and Wi-Fi is either constantly disconnecting or unusably slow. There was construction materials around the front entrance and the pool was closed. If there was another hotel on the cay, this one would be closed if it remained in this condition. Now the good. Beautiful water view and 30 seconds from the beach. A short ferry ride to the board walk which is free for cay guest. Excellent if you don't mind a hot room with no Internet service with a beautiful view and access to the beach.

Had a great week in st Croix! The hotel on the cay was exactly as described in the reviews. Beautiful beach with beach bar and an excellent location next to the Christiansted boardwalk! The hotel is in disrepair and poorly maintained, which is why the nighty rates are low. If you can live with your room having issues (our AC went down), then it’s a great location at a discount.

We were not notified that the pool was not operating. The entire outside of property is run down. There is no elevator and no one to help with bags. We were on the 3rd floor. Our balcony door did not shut properly and rattled loudly in the wind.

The room was spacious, clean, good shower. Beach and beach bar are spectacular. The quick water taxi was easy to navigate.

A great location for the price

The price needs to be considered when reviewing this hotel since the price is reasonable for the location. Yes, it is dated and a bit run down, but the apparently new owners are working on the place. The location is perfect, especially if you don’t want to rent a car, since the beach is beautiful and clean and all the amenities of town are a few quick ferry-ride minutes away. The beach bar is nice and the hotel staff were all friendly and accommodating. We hope they continue to upgrade and we hope to see great progress in the future.

As is the case with most of the Caribbean, Hotel on the Cay has been battered by hurricanes. However, if you love the beach, are not fussy and do not need ADA amenities, it is perfect. They do a great job of keeping the rooms clean and take good care of guests with charming island hospitality.

The hotel is in BAD need of renovation. When we walked into our room there was a roach on the bed, misquotes flying around and the sink had ghost ants all over it. The ants stayed our entire 7 day stay. The screens on the sliding door were ripped and didn’t close. The curtains were hanging off the track, broken. No water pressure in the shower and 9 times out of 10 there was no hot water. The staff did clean our room on our 3rd day and on our 5th day. Basically empty the trash and make the bed. The floors were not cleaned and since you’re walking across sand to get to/from the hotel room, you can imagine how quickly the floors got dirty. The location of the hotel was perfect and the beach is nice. Although beware, 200 yards from the beach access, where you catch the water taxi over to the hotel, a restaurant is pumping their raw sewage into the ocean. You can actually see toilet paper floating in the water and the smell is ungodly. Yes it’s 150-200 yards away but directly in front of the hotel and water moves quickly so yes, you’re swimming in sewage water. The hotel grounds were nice. Loved the lizards, iguanas and hermit crabs. The water feature out front is not working and is filthy but if they can get that running it will be nice.The pool is STILL closed. It’s been over a year so I guess they don’t have plans on fixing it. The beach bar is very nice. Amber, the bartender was amazing! Front desk staff is clueless. Charged me $275 2 days AFTER checkout. disputing that.

We only were able to stay 2 nights and had to be moved to the king christian hotel.the health department shut down the hotel because guests had gotten Legionnaire's Disease.Wish hotel would of gave us a upgrade at king christian hotel for the inconvenience of the situation

I got sick due to an exposure of legionnaires disease which the hotel was aware of a month in advance but still accepted guest here (discovered two days after feeling sick the hotel had an outbreak and was force to close - learn this from a local that confirm w/ a news article published in the st
Criox VI fb group ) .While some of the staff were friendly, the majority of the employees & mgt were nonchalantly and didn't offer any medical support or attention. Completely negligent and inconsiderate of the guest welfare .

The view was beautiful, but the Hotel is extremely older over 40 plus years and nothing is updated on the property. Also after we checked out on 8 Jan 2025 and my spouse and I left the Island not feeling well. We found out from family on the island that The Department of Health Ordered Hotel on the Cay to Cease Operations Amid Legionnaire’s Disease. It here we a couple confirmed cases and the symptoms are like the Flu . Now I have to get a urine test to make sure it’s just Flu we have and nothing else.

Good hotel - but need a ferry every time you leave

Very beautiful beach and great concept, biggest downfall is relying on a Ferry. Room was clean and pretty renovated. Could use some more upgrades but room itself was good! Food and bar on the beach is great, but I wish they were open for dinner (BBQ closes at 5, bar time was inconsistent when they closed). Best part is their sister hotel, King Christen Hotel, has tons of food options and we’re all very good. Coolest thing is just the fact of staying on the cay.

Ferry was very fast (2 minutes), but response time was very inconsistent. Sometimes we waited 5 minutes, some not at all, one time close to 15 minutes. They did have a ferry as early as 6am, but it took some waiting and needing to call the office. Overall, easy if you plan to need an additional 10 minutes to get anywhere.

Overall, decent stay. Would recommend people stay there for a night, but probably won’t be rebooking.

Balcony railing was completely rusted and unsafe to even touch.
Everything else was satisfactory. If you need peace and quiet, this hotel is the place to be.
The food was delicious. Best darn burger I ever ate, but you better order before 5-5:30pm closing time or else you’ll have to ferry to the island for food… island life 😁

I have stayed here several times and I've never had a problem. This time I got moved from room to room to room because the air conditioning was not working. I ended up having to go into a downgraded room because there were no more suites available. The room we moved from because of no AC, my brother got electrocuted by a light switch. We were informed that the reason why the AC was not working was because there was a burnt wire on the roof that controlled things for our room. It's no wonder why Rickie got electrocuted when he tried to turn off the light. What irritates me the most is I was not compensated for the price difference. So until renovations are done and I don't have to worry about this being a problem again, I will no longer stay here.

This property could be a goldmine. A hotel on its own island! Come on now! However, this is not the case and property is in desperate need of a whole renovation. Personally, I feel it should be demolished and rebuilt. Staff was very nice. BBQ food was very good along with bar. Unfortunately, because of how run down and dumpy the entire property is, we immediately checked out next day. If owner ever decides to rebuild or do a major overhaul of property, we would consider going back. However, if it stays like this, NEVER AGAIN! It is a real shame. We were really looking forward to staying there.

It's location is like a Beach Resort, but cheaper. I enjoyed the Karaoke Night on Tuesday. The Beach is not crowded and the sand was fun to walk on. I got one fresh coconut that fell from its tree near where I was sitting and the \"Handyman\" Mr. Oscar, helped to cracked it open; I enjoyed the coconut milk and the flesh. The room was clean with supplies of coffee/pot, cutleries, iron/board, air dryer, etc. But the Bed was too soft and sinking a little bit. I didn't complain because my room was on Ocean View and I thought to change might put me out of the View.

The room is very outdated.
The iguanas are like stray cats as soon as you open the balcony door, two iguanas were already sitting out there, looking at us on the brick and then when we stepped out onto the balcony three more Iguanas popped out from the bushes and two rushed us on the deck waiting for food. That was so we just first got in the room. I had called the front desk to see if we can get in the room but she said all the third floor was booked so we had to stay in that room. We just didn’t go on the balcony anymore. Even when we opened the curtain they would come to the balcony or watch you from the bricks waiting for us to give them something if we close the curtains for a couple hours they would eventually leave, but we made a game out of it.

What I liked, beach, convenient ferry rides, & very spacious. The room we were given shouldn't have been given to anyone in its condition. Thats why i rates the staff a 3, the work that needs to be done is blatantly obvious. While I could have complained upon check in, we didn't. We were exhausted, and figured, if this is what they gave us, the odds of a better unit probably didn't exist. I did let the front desk know upon check out.

The view from the room was the best part, waking up and hearing the water was mesmerizing. This place could use some updating but the accommodations were doable for 1 night.

I like that's a little island away from everything but the beach ⛱️ is just steps away from your room.I love my view of the water and Gallows bay.I like the fact that they evacuated us safely before the storm into a waiting hotel.
I didn't like that the sliding door does not securely close, it's weather worn.

Beautiful views, easy access to shallow snorkeling and swimming, very friendly and helpful staff. Rooms are clean and basic, with a small kitchenette and A/C.
