However, be advised this hotel is directly across from Bologna Centrale. It is loud outside 24/7. Horns honking, people screaming all hours of the night and day. It is a very convenient location for using trains to travel. We did day trips to Milan, and Florence. However, the trade off is the noise in the area. Also, their buffet style breakfast was great as well.

Starhotels Excelsior is on par with a good Hilton or Marriott. Excellent location directly across the street from Bologna Centrale, which makes arrivals and departures effortless. Staff were friendly and helpful throughout the stay. The room was very clean with a comfortable bed and good linens. Minor quirk: I had to hunt a bit to figure out the bathtub drain knob, but nothing serious.
Breakfast was a highlight. Scrambled eggs and bacon, a strong bakery selection, fresh juices, yogurt, and deli items. Plenty of choice and good quality. From the hotel, it’s about a 20-minute walk to Piazza Maggiore, passing through lively streets full of shops and cafés. A solid, reliable choice for Bologna.

This hotel had many positive attributes. First of all the location was excellent. It was close to the main attractions, but also close to the train station. The room itself was of decent size. But I would say that it was booked as a “ triple room“. If that is a triple room, I would hate to see a single because it was still somewhat cramped. But it was aesthetic, The HVAC worked well, and the bathroom was nice. I would say the bed was quite hard, which was a major problem. But otherwise, the gym was meager, but it was spacious enough and had enough equipment to get in a good workout. I was happy with it. The breakfast on the other hand, was mid range to poor in quality. Several items, like sausages and bacon, tasted plastic like and stale. This was consistent over multiple days. But the coffee was OK and they had some other items that were okay. But the breakfast was quite a disappointment. Furthermore the main maître D of the breakfast room was not a particularly pleasant guy, and he was fairly rude on one occasion, which was a big turn off. Overall, this hotel was at least OK if not fairly pleasant. I would consider staying there again.

My only negative is don’t get fooled by the drink and appetizer deal they have posted all round, the food is just peanuts, chips, and parm cheese- it is not the yummy food they have pictured as you would assume- kind of a bait and switch. But the hotel itself was perfect and Bologna just might be my new fave Italian city, great location for visiting other towns.

I booked 3 rooms for 4 nights inc breakfast for my family and I for a short holiday and after much research I booked this hotel and I’m so glad I did. It has an elegant reception with lovely welcoming staff. The rooms are quite even though the train station was across the road and they were all spacious with comfortable beds and decent sized bathrooms. The only downside was the shower glass was too small and water was going all over the floor and onto the wooden door which is bowing, guessing it happens all the time. My husband pulled the alarm cord too 🤣 thinking it was the extraction fan and needed maintenance to come and reset it.
The breakfast was excellent with plenty to choose from and help yourself to coffee / cappuccino machines. One morning I was not well and the staff offered to bring some breakfast to my room, instead my husband opted for a takeaway bag with cakes, biscuits, coffee and a cheese toastie. This was very kind.
The location is about a 20 minute walk to the main square centre ( beautiful) and 2 minutes to the bus / central train station. Very convenient as we traveled to Verona, Modena and Rimini and beyond.

I stayed here after finishing a cruise from Ravenna and it was great. The location was perfect for transfers to and from the cruise port and also the airport. The room was very clean with plenty of space and the service was excellent. If I am ever returning to Bologna or taking another cruise from Ravenna I will be returning to this hotel.

The ‘Centro storico’ is all within walking distance.
We didn’t like the coffee at breakfast. The coffee from the machine was bitter/unpleasant. There is an option to ask the staff to make you a fresh coffee but this didn’t taste much better: I very much doubt it was made with a proper machine.

Passing through, on the way to Venice for a cruise. Went to Pisa and Florence for day trips. Bologna is not big and hotel is opposite the the railway station. Dining options plenty nearby. Rome is huge and comfortable. Great stay.
