This was a leisure visit. We were greeted by you are early (30 mins) which I had acknowledged before they mentioned it and said they would check. Again they said we were early but the room was ready and told Room 3 upstairs! We only have 7 rooms we were told. The room was tidy but dusty and the window although double glazed had a gale blowing through as it didn’t fully seal when closed. The shower head had more water coming out of the top of the shower head than where it was supposed to come from and wasn’t particularly warm either. You could hear every noise from people walking up the staircase to closing their doors.
The staff were ok seemed to be put out when we went to the restaurant which was cold as was the rest of the building. They didn’t come across that friendly or welcoming.
The building itself has the promise to be a really nice place but more attention needs to be paid to the rooms and temperature control. It did seem to have contractors staying there.

Nice hotel, small but clean room. No bath just shower which we didn’t mind but only had soap so if staying longer would need to bring own toiletries. Staff are nice & friendly and great customer service. Nice pub down stairs with live music at weekend & TV for sports. Close to public transport (bus & train). Free Wi-Fi.

Whilst I appreciate there was a no cancellation policy, due to a family bereavement, I asked Hotels.com to cancel the booking for me. They spoke to The Hotel and explained who had died. The Hotel point-blank refused to allow me to cancel. Totally unsympathetic uncaring. Passed the Hotel later on we’re looking for a venue for the wake - lots of mess outside the front door looks like a litter bin had been tipped upside down by the front door. Staff passed it and did nothing. Appears their attention to detail was equally as low as their customer service.

Staff was on point friendly chatty very approachable room was clean welcoming. There is a bus stop right outside on both sides of the road so easy to get in to Edinburgh. The beach is a five minutes walk.

On arrival I spoke with the Owner as on previous occasions we have been in a room with no heating in the middle of winter and on another occasion, no hot water for showering when we stayed for two nights, despite complaining about the fact we had no water. On this occasion we did have heating and the shower was warm but not hot. There does seem to be a lack of staff with one member of staff having everything to do front of house i.e taking food orders, serving the bar, checking customers in therefore some times you can have a bit of a wait to be dealt with / served.

The room was clean, but very cold when we arrived at 5 Oclock. Itcwould have been good if tge heating had been on for our arrival.We had a meal in the restaurant, it was very nice and staff were friendly. When we got back to our room at 7 oclock the heating was on and room had warmed up. The bed was 2 singles put together unfortunately one of the matresses was very uncomfortable the other matress was good. We were in room 5.

Everything was awful with this place , and unfortunately we never got breakfast served and chance to get any other food option. The disavventure started last night when we arrived at 20:45 for clock in with also a restaurant booking, and when we arrived there we been told that the kitchen was already closed, even if we had restaurant confirmation and could see a waitress coming out from the kitchen with some big orders, but they couldn’t bother to have more clients and they left us without food, and this was already a bad start and didn’t find any other option for us to get some food. The night evolved even worst, with a itchy bed and also no heather , i was freezing all night and wasn’t nobody in the hotel for get assistance, in the morning I wished to had a shower, but wasn’t any hot water running, the place was so cold and everything was very unpleasant. When finally in the late morning I managed to find someone working in the hotel they weren’t very reasonable and actually meanwhile some of the woman staff assisted t me and checked the condition of the room and could see that the heater wasn’t working and the hot water wasn’t running and was a lot of condensation at the window , I had to deal with two men that were very intimidating and rude, finishing to harassing me and didn’t feel safe and welcome in that place , everything was very unfair and for the money I paid nothing was worth.

Really nice location if you are looking for a place to stay around Edinburgh and parking was a plus. The rooms were clean and cute, however the water in the shower was nowhere warm enough and during the first night there was a lot of noise coming from the adjacent room (every time someone opened the door next to our room it felt like they were coming into our room instead which made it difficult to sleep) although all ok the other nights

An older property but refurbished to a high standard. We chose this property as a means of visiting Edinburgh without he hassle of parking our vehicle in town. We took the bus into Edinburgh from Musselburgh. Very convenient.

The rooms in the hotel are nice and clean. It was a bit noisy with a singer on in the bar, his volume was ok it was some of the guests who were enjoying themselves that were very loud. Breakfast was fantastic, lovely fresh hot food. Shame there was no orange juice.
Will certainly recommend and stay again if the opportunity arises.

If I'm honest I didn't expect much due to the price
It was almost three times cheaper than other options further out of Edinburgh
The room was small but clean and bed comfortable
Cosy with tea and coffee facilities
Hair dryer provided and shower small again but clean and modern
Bonus is the bar downstairs offering a range of drinks including Tennants and Beaver town neck oil. Best take your own travel iron but nothing else really needed
Are immediately round the area isn't great but has an Aldi and Lidl within 5 mins walk.
2 miles away from Portobello beach with hip cafes and takeaways so either take a walk along there and enjoy the sunset or even take a dip.
Great location for a trip to Edinburgh
Just 23 min drive passing Holyrood area. Beautiful!
Well worth the stay
No breakfasts at the hotel. We recommend 5 mins round the block go to Company bakery on eskmills estate. Very swanky and lovely coffee.

This review was nearly one star. First of all, this is not a guest house - it’s a pub with a few rooms. We arrived tired after a long journey on a Saturday night and our room was directly above the pub lounge that had very loud musical entertainment. The music went on late and then we were kept awake by the pub clients’ loud singing until they were sent home. Our room was large and clean but there were some stains on the bed cover. The bathroom door was broken and the WiFi didn’t work despite entering the correct password several times. The only toiletries provided were a couple of tiny rounds of soap. No body wash or shampoo. We had breakfast on Sunday morning and the lady serving was lovely. Sunday and Monday nights were thankfully quieter. We ate at the restaurant once more for dinner and again the same lovely lady served us and the food was good. This lady is why we have awarded more stars. In summary, if you’re looking for a peaceful place to stay do not book this place on a weekend. If it’s a week day and you don’t mind not having breakfast included (they stopped serving breakfast on week days) then it’s ok, made much better by the lovely lady in the restaurant.

It was a last minute booking with a small discount on the price so decided to go for it. The rooms looked decent, we were coming to Musselburgh and knew the hotel was central to where we wanted to be based.
Unfortunately, the hotel is more of a pub with rooms rather than a hotel.
The room is very small but is clean. The bathroom is very small, the shower cubicle far too small with absolutely no space to turn or bend down to pick up soap or shampoo, with no shelf to hold soap or shampoo. So, showering was not an enjoyable or relaxing experience. Add in the power-saving bathroom light that turns off and in unless movement is detected and it just becomes really annoying.
There was tea and coffee available in the room but they were of average quality.
All things considered, I definitely won't be rushing back.

Spacious room, good shower. Very busy pub and when we arrived it was clear they were short staffed. Bit noisy but didn’t go on too late.
Breakfast is only available at the weekends, there was some confusion as I had an email telling me there was no breakfast service. I had emailed back but didn't get a reply. Having said that breakfast was good and the man serving was really friendly and helpful. The bus stop right outside is great if you want to go into Edinburgh (stop is on Princes Street.

Turned up at the dining room to find no service and told they no longer provide breakfast despite advertising stating breakfast available between 8 to 11 am

It’s an ideal place to stay to explore Edinburgh and the surrounding areas, including Portobello, being far enough out of the city for a bit of peace and quiet. Everything you need is easily within reach. Dinner was tasty enough and the beer went down well. Staff were very friendly and there if you needed them for the most part. A fantastic price, easy to get to, I would be happy to stay here again no problem.

I’ve stayed previously but won’t be back . No hot water for shower and unable to make a hot drink due to faulty kettle. No breakfast availability either as hotel not staffed overnight or early am. I stayed Sunday night. I know it’s a budget hotel but if it says you are able to make tea/coffee then that should be the case and hot water is not a luxury

We had a lovely room,bit of a mix up booking in as our name was not on the list,but was easily sorted,just a wee bit attention to touch i would suggest,a few cobwebs and a dodgy bathroom handle,couple of lil holes in the lampshade next to the bed but on thw whole would certainly stay again,fabulous price for our 2 night stay,also gr8 location for regular public transport,well don to the team at Ravelston House,hope to see you all soon,and on a plus side entertainment on Saturday night was top notch,Keith Dyer was superb😄

Arrived and the lady at the reception was very nice easy to talk to I didn’t catch her name. The room was a nice temperature, tv a decent size, shower was brilliant but the bed wasn’t comfy at all could feel the springs and my bed was lopsided it had a dip to it on the left side of the bed also only got 3 slim pillows between 2 people didn’t feel like enough. Door handle broke on the bathroom after using it twice it had been damaged by someone else who stayed recently. Also there was quite a bit of mould around the bathroom window.

We were looking for a quiet and comfortable place to stay near Edinburgh, but unfortunately, this accommodation didn’t meet those expectations. The bed was one of the most uncomfortable I’ve ever tried to sleep on- uneven with no support, and if you shifted around too much, you’d hit the hard base underneath (ouch!). The bathroom door handle also came straight off just from opening it and the electric kettle looked like it was never cleaned. The biggest issue was the noise: there was live music until midnight (on Fridays), and our room was directly above and near the entrance, making it extremely loud. On a positive note, the town itself was charming, and the beach was easily accessible. I wouldn’t recommend this place if you’re looking for a good night’s sleep, as it seems to be the town’s nightlife hub.

Check in at the bar as no reception.
Bedroom was clean and adequate. Bed and pillows not that comfy (both soft) but accept that’s personal choice. TV bit on the small side but had plenty of channels. Shower was very good (though no shampoo).
We had dinner and breakfast and have to say that both were excellent, good range of choice and good quality.

We arrived well after their last. Check in time of 10pm, which we weren't aware of(our fault for not reading the fine print). We were able to contact one of the principles of the inn and he immediately sent someone from home down to accomodate us. We were very grateful as we had just flown to London and drove 7 hours to Edinburgh and were exhausted.

Room decor is good and new, shower excellent. Breakfast cooked fresh and service great. Evening meal was ok, again service good. Areas to improve, mattresses, felt very well used, lumpy as were pillows, did not match room standard. Room cleanliness needs some work, cobwebs, eyelash on floor, bed not made when out of room. Live music Friday and Saturday night quite loud in room as was post clean up staff voices till well after midnight.

The kettle did not switch off, so we risked burns every time we used it. The bathroom door handle did not work and one of the towels was covered with stains. There was no room cleaning during our stay. Be aware you can hear bar noise from the rooms. Not such an issue during the week when the bar closes at 10pm.
On the positive side, car parking was easy and there were bus stops to Edinburgh right outside. The breakfast was also well cooked.

The property, service and cleanliness were excellent even though they were under staffed it did not affect the service.

The room was lovely. Well appointed and spacious. I did find it a bit cold bit we turned the radiators up and chucked on the extra duvet from the wardrobe. The only downside was that i never received an email that was apparently sent regarding check in times etc. Unfortunately we then weren't aware that we needed to arrive before 10pm. Thankfully we called the hotel en route to check because the journey was a long one and we had been held up and a member of staff kindly stayed behind to check us in when we got there at 10.30pm.

Breakfast was delicious and there was plenty of choice and the lady serving at breakfast was lovely.

Great hotel. The room and bathroom was really stylish. Saw a couple of cobwebs, which may bother some people. The bed was comfortable and the room was warm.

A great choice for breakfast from a full Scottish to pancakes. There was unlimited tea and coffee and cereal.

The buses into Edinburgh are regular and drop you right into Princes street so it's just a great location for exploring the city without paying a lot.

We would consider staying here again.

We got absolutely no sleep with my 4 year old as there was very loud music all night, there were then revelers singing at the top of their voices outside until 2pm. Completely and utterly thoughtless to anyone staying there. There should be a warning to residents not connected to a private party and that the live music will go on til 12am with no soundproofing. I realise it's Saturday night. I heard people constantly asking for the singer to play on. I think a manager should step in and think of residents sleeping. Id like to ask for compensation of some kind as we had an awful time. Thanks

Overall very good, a couple of little things that would cost the owners minimal amount. 3 keys as no night porter(not an issue) but all silver, a small investment, room key larger so obvious but the 2 front door keys very similar Make one gold and, when told on arrival will make life so much simpler. Plus beautiful shower, but no where to put soap . 7 soap trays, and 7 keys won't cost much but enhance guest experiences immensely without them realising, sometimes little things really help. Having said this will be back with own shower gel to hang on shower😃

This small hotel was homely and friendly, and suited us well as it was close to family we were visiting. Perhaps because it was between Christmas and New Year, there were few staff and our room was not serviced during our three night stay- we had to make our own bed, and there were no hand towels or bath mat. The soap holder was missing from the shower. However, the room was pleasant and comfortable. The cooked breakfast was made to order ,and was good.

We had a great two night stay at the Ravelston House Hotel. Room was very comfortable with an excellent en suite. Tea and coffee provided and the included breakfast was also very good. Bar menu was good, can recommend the haddock. Easy links in and out of the city by very frequent buses which stop within a few yards of the hotel in either direction. We’d definitely stay there again.

Booked in for an overnight stay for visiting relatives. Being a Sunday night the rate was very good and included breakfast. Had a bit of a wait to check in as the duty manager was in another room organizing things for a function but someone in the bar summoned him and all was good. He showed us to our room and gave us all the information regarding late entry and breakfast time. The room was ok although a little tired but it was clean. We also had a walk in shower which is preferable for us instead of a shower over a bath. The hotel has recently done away with the services of a night porter I believe which proved on this occasion to be a bit of an oversight as we were rudely awakened about 4.50am by a loud alarm. I think there were 4 or 5 couples staying and we all assembled outside as this alarm went on for ages until the manager arrived to assure us that there was no fire. Just as well really as all of us took the time to get dressed before assembling outside, it was December after all!! All in all an enjoyable enough stay, breakfast was good so a good all round hotel.

Friendly staff on arrival. Bedroom cold on arrival. Had to ask staff to turn the heating on in bedroom. Went out for the evening to come back to a cold bedroom. Heating didn’t come on at all overnight. I was freezing with a thin duvet. An alarm went off after 1am in the hotel then buzzing noises and people talking loud. Told the morning staff about my cold room and they apologied. Breakfast was basic. No fruit etc on offer. Only boxed cereal and hot breakfast (in various forms, fry up, hot rolls) and when I asked for pancakes with berries and cream I was asked if I really wanted them as it’s a big portion. Will never be back.

Had a wonderful stay at Ravelston House! The staff were incredibly friendly and accommodating, which made the experience feel warm and welcoming from the moment we arrived. The location is fantastic, with excellent transport links that made getting around a breeze. It’s also great value for money, especially considering the level of service provided.

The only small issue was a strange smell around the headboard or beddings—almost like wet fabric that hadn’t dried properly. It wasn’t a major problem, but something that could be improved.

Overall, a lovely place to stay, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to others. With that minor tweak, it would be absolutely perfect!

Liked warm and inviting layout of the room, little bedside table with extra pull out shelf, small bathroom window, superb shower and quality well prepared and presented breakfast with waitress service included in room price.
Only thing I would add is a small shampoo/shower gel in addition to the soap provided and perhaps a little complimentary individually wrapped shortbread, would have complemented the room theme perfectly.

Much better staff were friendly and food was lovely but a few things let this place down. Had to wait ages for check in as staff overworked , heating did not work the lighting in bathroom kept going on and off with no bath mat or hand towel , lighting in bedroom was not ideal 2 small lamps would be better and the bed was only a small double and very hard and uncomfortable pillows

PRO: Well worth the price compared to alternative options, I’d go again. Wifi worked in bedroom, complimentary breakfast and free parking. Bed was comfy.

CON: Bedroom cleaning could be improved between guests. Lots of overnight noises.

Perfect little Gem 💎

Just arrived home from Ravelston house staying 3 nights 08/10/24 to 11/10 /24 and wow what to say . Would like to shout out how great the staff are , all so friendly specially vinny & Ewan both full of helpful tips and advise on how to get about and what to see vinny is an amazing man so friendly and nothing is to much bother always with a smile 😃. The hotel is perfectly located with bus stops literally outside the carpark entrance and cheap to get in and out of Edinburgh city , food is great with plenty of choice, rooms are a good size with nice decor and a big shower . Only small negative comment is the mattress had a few springs that you could feel luckily there was a 2nd duvet so we slept on one and under the other so it was ok they could do with a small investment in new ones. Its located just a 5 min walk from the beach and dock we luckily saw the northern lights on our last night from the beach 😃👍 . Would highly recommend this hotel for all reasons thank you for an amazingstay in Musselburgh just outsideEdinburgh. Allan & Lesley Fincken . Room 1 .

Our stay at the Ravelston was fantastic. From the unique check-in at the bar (with the most energetic bartenders) to breakfast the next morning with the most genuine restaurant staff, our stay was awesome. The room was clean, with cute decor, and had the best shower. The neighborhood is quiet, convenient, and safe. If ever back in Edinburgh, we will be staying here again.

We liked our stay here and the bus stop going to Edinburgh picks up almost right in front of the hotel. The breakfast is wonderful and Vinny is great and helpful. The chefs get two thumbs up.
The music was fine and wraps up around 11pm and makes a fun atmosphere.
My only issue is the other guests being loud going upstairs to their rooms at night. Common sense is not common as they say.

Room fine, bed small, bathroom nice. Had to ask for towels as room wasn’t serviced over the 3nights.
Food was average.
This is a function venue, is very loud so be prepared.
Two staff stood out both on breakfast duty the mornings we were there..

After reading so many negative reviews i was apprehensive about our stay,i need not of worried.
Although the external ground and gardens may need a tidy up,i was pleasantly surprised by the internal decor,staff were obliging when asked about parking arrangements,and directions to the racecourse spot on.On returning we found the bar very busy and although having to wait a couple of minutes to check in,we were greeted with a smile and told of room arrangements and food availability.Rooms are large and beautifully decorated,obviously newly done and even with the bar been busy we heard no noise from below,we were in room 5..Massive bed and super shower.We ate in the bar,half price Wednesday,no wonder it was busy.Food was superb for the price..One enchillada and one special tagliatelle wih rump steak,both very tasty and plentiful..Staff very pleasant.After a good nights sleep,we headed down to breakfast and the very pleasant Vinnie a member of the breakfast staff.Once again breakfast was superb,beautifully presented and tasty produce a massive thumbs up.Wouldnt hesutate to stay again with great bus links into Edinburgh and walking distance to racecourse.Rooms are great,staff pleasant and free car parking a massive bonus.Dont be put off by the fascade,as not every book can be judged by its cover.

Whilst sitting in my room the door opened and it was a young lad, an opportunist theft! If I had been in the bathroom I would have been subject to this thief.
When my husband went down they had gone. on speaking to the staff he got ‘we have these issues!!’ Not what you want to hear. The 2 front doors are left open, maybe if the inner door was closed they wouldnt have the opportunity of a fast easy exit down the stairs.
My husband later spoke to the manager who hadn’t been told by his staff the lad had entered our room.
Not somewhere I would stay again and would ask others to lock their room doors if they are staying there as this is ‘an issue they have’ and are not doing anything about it.

Great hotel in Musselburgh, close to Joppa and Portobello beach.

Lovely staff and great breakfast

Busy pub serving meals

Booked double room and was allocated huge family room, toiletries included with tea and coffee facilities

Bus stop outside takes about 30 minutes to Waverley Station

Would definitely recommend.

Great location for our Scottish Half Marathon or for getting a bus into Edinburgh centre. Well appointed room with comfy bed & awesome shower!

We liked the fact that it was a small boutique hotel. It was a little far from Edinburgh but having to take only one bus onto the city helped. The room was good and the bathroom was clean, modern and large so two people could use it easily.

Nice cozy room above the pub. It is above a pub so it’s not quiet at night. This didn’t bother us but is worth noting. Otherwise the room was clean and comfortable. Location is good with options for restaurants and grocery within walking distance. Under 10 mins drive to Wallyford train station for 10 min train ride into Edinburgh. Free parking was handy for the car as well

Booked this hotel as my best friend was getting married there and i live out of town so didnt
want to spend alot of time and money travelling and getting caught in traffic jams. Hotel room was fabulous, bed was very comfortable and room were spacious. Shower was excellent, especially with there neon bath lights. Had dinner the first night with close friends and it was prefect homemade cooking food and the chicken and leek pie was delicious. Following night was meal from the wedding breakfast absolutely gorgeous especially the cheesecake. Both days had a selection of different breakfast options but i choice the pancakes and blueberries and Brodies coffee on both days. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I'll definitely be back for a stay and if when in town will definitely drop in for some of Brodie's Coffee and cake or catch up with friends over dinner.

The room was a nice size. It had a bit of an odd smell but not too significant.

The staff were very friendly and it was easy to re-enter after hours.

The bathroom is newly renovated but has no place to put any shampoo/soap.

Very nice stay with great access to Edinburgh by bus. Musselburgh beach was a quick walk away. Parking was very easy and the staff members were pleasant and helpful. The room was spacious and well equipped.

Lovely stay at Ravelston House Hotel

Ravelston House is a great location to get to the city of Edinburgh by bus.The hotel is nicely decorated .Our bedroom has a comfy bed and nice new ensuite shower room.The lovely restaurant has a good menu and friendly staff .The fish and chips and steak pie were tasty and nicely cooked.The scottish full breakfast was lovely and keeps you going until well into the afternoon.The harbour
was just around the corner from the hotel.We would stay again to see more of the area.Thank you.

Friendly staff and convenient location.

Very friendly staff, comfortable bed with a modern clean bathroom, proper Iron Bru in a glass bottle! Also walking distance from train station, very cheap to Edinburgh.
