Not as expected

Convenient location, but major issues with cleanliness and comfort. Dead bird outside the stairs that had been there for a while, dusty room with a sock from a previous guest, small pillows, and uncomfortable beds. Not recommended unless location is a top priority. Inspect room carefully upon arrival and consider other options.

Nice and tidy living space and kitchen with everything you need. The garden was very peaceful.
The host responded quickly to our messages which was appreciated.
The room was mostly clean apart from surfaces in the bedroom being quite dusty.
Small changes could be made to make the room more convenient e.g a storage unit in the bathroom to place our things or hooks on the back of doors to hang jackets.
Mostly quiet except for other guests being loud during early hours of the morning.
Overall, would recommend especially for those looking to stay in a quieter part of the city but still at a walkable distance from the city centre.

Close but in need of some maintenance and cleaning

Great location and nice to have kitchen and washing machine and lounge but needs maintenance eg door handle not securly fixed and lock box comes off wall. Noise comes through walls and bathrooms are not ensuite. Trade off with condition and privacy for kitchen and washing machine. Close to hire car. Walk to sites or transport.

Nice location

This is part of a converted flat in the basement of a townhouse. There are three room available with a communal kitchen and lounge area. It is a 10 min walk to the tram and a 25 min walk to the castle

The room was nice and clean but there was no heat apart from a small space heater that barely made a difference. The key box was a little problematic. The numbers were hard to see.

Great location and very nice, friendly, flexible host. Hot water and great pressure in the showers, heating worked great. Very cute rooms. Highly recommend! Quick 3 block walk from the center of Edinburhg.

One of the best places I have stayed and it is close to the town centre as well within walkable distance with easy accessibility to all shops and restaurants. The room particularly was clean and warm with all amenities needed to cook. There was Alps a pound which was even comfortable to dine and watch television. Overall I am very much happy with the room and place. I would highly recommend this.Thank you very much.

Really nice sized room, nice bathroom and comfy beds. Our host was lovely and really helpful. Very close to centre and good bars and restaurants. Only downside is ceiling is quite thin and we had some very noisy neighbours upstairs! Overall a lovely stay and would definitely stay again.

A well located reasonably priced Edinburgh option

The accommodation was really well located, was superbly maintained, very clean, near the supermarket. The kitchen was great to use and it felt homely. It is a well priced option in Edinburgh and worked out perfectly for our tourist related travel by foot.

Edinburgh is a brilliant city so many diverse things to see and do. From museums,
castles, eating, night life to walking up large hills and along a river in dense woodlands with nature and all in walking distance. Our Room had a huge bed and we had a separate lounge to ourselves which was the Russian suite. Check in and out was fully explained and easy as there is no check in desk at these apartments. All in all a great stay.

the property is in a great location, only a small walk away from Princes Street. The room size was great for the four of us - nice and clean also. The bathroom was very clean too and also a great size. Check - in was easy and we felt safe in the accommodation.

Loud extractor fan

A important thing someone should knew before visiting here is the bathroom is no en suit and has a extractor fan that is quiet loud and one night woke up the people in the room opposite as the extractor fan turn on with the light and still on after the lights off. The room was clean enough and alright for us, as we just wanted somewhere to sleep after exploring the city for the day and meeting old friends but not a ‘destination’ hotel.

Quick and easy access to our room (self check in). 10-15min walk from main city centre area. Great communication from owner. Communal areas clean and tidy with everything you would need.

Downside - double bed is actually to single beds together, so not the most comfortable.

Clean, simple, accommodation in a gorgeous area

Don't be fooled by the gorgeous exterior. The interior is very down to earth. It's self service; you won't be getting your bed made or the place straightened every morning. There's a nice common area and shared kitchen and laundry facilities (less backpackers and more like a small bed and breakfast). The area is very beautiful with some local monuments and a few decent cafes heading away from the tourist area. It's a short walk to the Royal Mile however the walk can be a little spooky through the Old Tolboth Wynd late at night of you're by yourself.

City Retreat, Edinburgh

As City Retreat uses a self check in system (it worked very well) and doesn't give an overnight make up service, it is difficult to give a rating on service, but the rest of the stay was great. There is a comfortable communal area next to the kitchen. It is in an excellent, quiet location, within a 25 minute walk of most of the main sights and less to the train station. There is also a superb Michelin starred restaurant a few minutes away, too. We would be more than happy to stay there again in the future

Good place .Helpful staff.

Everything looked fine until we went to bed. There were a problem with the linen on the double bed. It smell absolutely terrible. (Not dry properly) . After a terrible night we contacted the staff and intermediately they took care and fix the problem.
The staff name SAV was great with us. She was so Friendly while took care of the problem and suggest us different places to eat. It was a lovely place for breakfast !!. Thank you.

Good quiet location in the basement of a townhouse on a pretty street. 'Paris' room is right next to the front door so would be noisy if busy. Wet towels on arrival as the towel heater had been switched off :( Bedding felt a bit tired. Bathroom clean. Kitchen + lounge area clean and welcoming.

Not really a hotel, but a room in a shared facility apartment. No staff, you get a code to get in the front door, and your room key is in the room door when you arrive.
Shared kitchen with other rooms.
Room itself was very comfortable and en-suite very clean. All in all good value.

Short stay in Edinburgh

Stayed for two nights at city retreat Edinburgh, stayed at Dublin street lane south, has full kitchen facility to share with other guests with a private bathroom. Very handy location to city centre with restaurants and cafes close by. Also about a ten minute walk, if that, from Edinburgh Waverley train station. Would definitely recommend this for anyone staying in Edinburgh
