We also only had 1 thin pillow each making the bed feel quite uncomfortable to sleep on
The ground floor of the part we stayed in was fenced off as well as being very dark and dingy which was strange

If you are looking for a budget hotel this fits the bill there are no frills. The accommodation that I stayed in was in block two which does not look like the pictures you see on the website. My stay was for two nights the location is very central and was convenient for my needs. Check in took a while as had to complete a registration form before being able to check in which included inputting ID documents! Staff were friendly with luggage storage.

The name doesn't say that it is a Hostel. Was after a cheap night's stay, definitely received that. Booked AO because it looked recently renovated and potentially a step up from an ibis or travelodge.
Check in was very convoluted. Needed to scan a qr code to sign in and submit Id details, then you are allowed to check in at reception where they take those details again. It's not a quick process. Also the city tax was charged in euros for some reason.
The name is AO Hostels, so they're geared up for travellers who are more interested in a cheap place to sleep. If that's what you're after, then this is what you'll get. No mod cons but they do provide shower gel and hand soap. The bathroom looks like it was made for a train 😅. No kettle in the room, so no tea or coffee, and no iron.
Heating didn't work until half way through the night so I woke up boiling when it did. They advertise soundproof rooms, but the doors are not, so you can hear everyone walking past. I'm lot a light sleeper but I definitely got woken up a few times thinking someone was trying to get in my room.
Checkout is at 10 but you can tell they're keen on turnover as housekeeping knocked on my door at 9 hoping I was gone.
Speaking of turnover, they leave the huge bedding trolleys in the corridors.

Overall it was a place to sleep and it didn't cost a fortune. But not sure I'd pick it again given the choice.

As much as I liked my room's layout, the desk, the bed, the many wall outlets, and the city of Manchester, there are a number of things that tarnished the experience of staying at a&o Manchester City Centre. One big disappointment, which I assume was unusual, is that the fire alarm went off briefly in my room (in all the rooms, apparently) three of four times my second night and once my third afternoon. Because there are no phones in the hotel rooms nor is there any way to use one's own phone to call reception to find out what was wrong, many of us simply walked down the flights of stairs to ask; apparently the alarm disabled the elevators. The more I thought about it, the more I realized how big a safety hazard it is NOT to have a room phone linked to reception. There was simply no way of knowing there WASN'T a problem without heading downstairs (and upstairs). The other thing I noted was the lack of a water kettle to make coffee/tea in the rooms. In fact, there wasn't even a glass in the bathroom. Finally, and perhaps most damning: the breakfast was utterly mediocre. I was immediately sorry I had signed up for it in advance. I travel a lot and this was my first a&o experience. I wrote an email to customer service and got no response. Apparently this company is in the \"wholesale\" business and considers the experiences of any one traveler to be incidental. On this current UK trip I have stayed in Ibis, Mercure, and Premier hotels, all of which out-performed a&o.

Accommodation across two buildings. Bar and restaurant only in one building. WiFi poor a d no facilities in the room to make hot drinks. Check in very tech orientated so not great if that isn't your thing. Maybe easier if booked via hotel website but wasn't good at all having booked via a third party. Check out was 10.00 compared to noon at the rival Premier Inn.

The room itself was great, clean and comfortable. The check in experience let the whole stay down. Nothing against the staff as they did their best, but the idea you have to check in using the QR code is a flawed process and it took nearly 30 minutes to get checked in which is totally unacceptable. Many people were trying and failing to use the code to check in, causing staff to have to intervene in most cases and it just seemed to become more complex if you \"booked last minute using an external source\" even if last minute was 3 days ago. This meant staff had to call up somewhere and a very lengthy process unfolded where i was initally told the hotel was fully booked and i had no room allocated which to me equates to they have no room for me. I was given a voucher for a drink at the bar because of the lengthy wait and the staff were really not to blame here its the process that is ridiculous.

Please please change your system to streamline it for your customers and also for your staff. It should not take more than 5 minutes to check in a customer, 25-30 minutes is unacceptable, i would likely not return because of this.

The hotel’s location is perfect for exploring Manchester City on foot. Within walking distance to the Manchester Oxford Train station as well as the St Peter’s Tram station was incredibly useful for intercity as well as short trips to Trafford Park.
They have a little children corner at the bar with toys and an interactive game thingy, as well as free table football which really kept my little one entertained.
My only grouse would be the very limp pillow (which i ended up with a strained neck) and standard breakfast with no variation but those are small issues.
But the staff was great with their food recommendations ..especially one called “star”. So friendly!

The room was extremely small, and the bathroom was not clean at all. The bed and sheets were dirty, and the floor was clearly not cleaned properly. There were no basic amenities in the room not even simple hotel slippers, tissues, or a small bottle of water.
I was very disappointed with my stay and would not recommend this hotel to anyone, even for one night.

General decor and state of repair of 'house 2' I was put in was poor. Breakfast was edible but poor selection. Room wasn't cleaned at all during the day. Otherwise the bed seemed clean and staff weren't rude or unfriendly. Certainly fallen far since it was the Novotel

Pity no provision of simple tea making facility in the bedroom.
Breakfast is less than basic for the breakfast price paid.

I had a twin room which was spacious and clean with a large sized TV. Minor downsides were not all the USB sockets worked, the air-conditioning was on the noisy side but didn't stop me sleeping and some stains on the carpet and a chair make it look dirty but it was in fact very clean.

Nicely decorated room, some obvious wear and tear!! No amenities to make cup of tea like premier inn or other hotels which is an inconvenience when checking out early. Pillows are rock hard and when i removed from pillowcase it was like an armchair infill folded up and not actually a pillow!! Disappointing to be charged city tax in my own city! Premier inn don’t and you get comfortable pillows and drink making amenities!! Wouldnt book this hotel again!

The hotel's access is a bit mysterious. When we reached to the correct place to check-in, we were introduced to the staff at that moment who made us feel that we are a burden on them. We arrived earlier than our check-in time and we were okay with waiting for the start of check-in time. However, we were also curious if we could do early check-in, and when we asked for availability, the staff working at that moment first showed horrific emotions as if we asked for something impossible, and then they started mumbling in their own native language. Whenever we were trying to have a conversation with them, they always cut us off and spoke too fast as if they have no time and they have to catch a train. After some time when they found a room for us to check-in early, they acted as they are doing a favour on us. All in all it was a very bad experience and it ruined our excitement to explore Manchester.

The hotel itself is somewhat dated but still clean and welcoming. It really gives 90s conference centre. The rooms are large and spacious. However, the toilet is seperate from the bathroom. This can be an issue for some. The biggest problem I had was that there was no kettle, tea in the room. You couldnt request this, nor could you request an iron. I can understand the lack of kettle in the room as the hotel has a restaurant. But expecting customers to bring an iron is somewhat outrageous.

Overall, the experience of the stay was adequate, but the lack of amenities did frustrate me on my stay.

When we arrived we were pleasantly surprised by the hotel, it was lovely in the reception area. Sadly though the check-in experience wasn't great. We queued, not a problem, and when it was our turn we were told to scan the QR code and fill in the details. The details asked on this online form were all the same personal details given when booking the room. I had to then spend 5 minutes re-entering my name, address, dob etc etc. Totally pointless and time wasting. Eventually we had the code the receptionist needed to check us in and then we still had to wait while she checked details on her computer!!!

The room was lovely and clean, very basic. The bed was comfy, but a second set of pillows would have been nice. Likewise would something to have a drink from. There were no cups/glasses in the room.

We had pre booked and paid for breakfast and wish we hadn't. The cooked breakfast consisted of sausages, Quorn sausage, beans, hash browns and hard boiled eggs. 4 items??? Very odd. There were no pastries either. The cereal selection and continental meats and cheeses were far better than the cooked section.

Overall I would stay again if we couldn't get somewhere else, but I would not have breakfast and I would hope the check in process could be streamlined and not required a duplicate of my information.

The location of the hotel was excellent for access to city and walking .
It was a large room for city centre.
It was very busy at checkin because of the marathon weekend but staff did well.
The negative was no kettle or hot drink station although the reception staff let me get one from the breakfast area one day.
Only one pillow but maybe could have asked for additional one .

This meant that I paid £12 for a breakfast I was unable to receive (i already had train tickets booked for 7am), and none of the front desk team were able to assist. I have since emailed and had no response, so it's unlikely I'll be returning considering they are willing to falsely advertise and not refund me for a service they were unable to provide.

When checking in, I was told I had been allocated a room in the adjoining building, which as someone who had just had spinal surgery, the extra walking didn’t suit me at all. After they found me a room in the main building, I discovered it had an extra 2 beds in it, which left not a lot of room space.
No tea or coffee making facilities in the room and I had to go down to the bar to get a coffee to take back to my room.
Not good !
Bed was comfortable enough and tv worked.
Best thing if the stay was the shower, it was outstanding.

Had alot easier and smoother checks in at better hotels

Bed was not the best pillows were terrible. Had a uncomfortable sleep ended up leaving in the early hours to go home as we couldnt sleep and our neck was killing . Even with an extra pillow.

I would not stay here again. It's hotel prices in the middle of Manchester without hotel facilities.

You've got to check yourself in using a QR code. Then they insisted on seeing ID before they would let me have my key. I told the staff that it isn't mandatory to carry ID in the UK (im not against that by the way I just didn't have anything on me Barr my phone). They gave me my key in the end after I pointed this out to them.

The rooms are nice but there are no amenities at all. No kettle, tea coffee etc not even a paper cup for you to get water from the tap. When I complained the staff said it was no longer a hotel but a hostel. I advised them that you wouldn't pay hotel prices to stay in a hostel. If they are aiming for the hostel market they need to drop their prices by two thirds. Check out is at 10am as well which is too early

Top tip, pay the extra tenner to stay next door in the Premier inn

Unfortunately we had a fire evacuation at 2:30am which was the only thing that made our trip less enjoyable but apart from that we had a lovely stay!

Very well situated hotel, in the middle of Manchester. The hotel rooms have everything you need, however, no glasses/cups.

One negative, the fire alarm went off at 3am, there was confusion on what we should do as we are ambling down the stairs, the fire alarm stopped. We then returned to the room.

Overall, a good stay was had at a very reasonable price. I will stay again.

Phone in room didn’t work so had to traipse down to reception (in an entirely different building) to ask for an iron and ironing board only to be looked at like I had ten heads. They didn’t have any which is ludicrous - not they’re with other people. Didn’t have any full stop. No hint of an apology. Rude as anything.

Cleanliness of the room was questionable.

The staff were friendly to me and my pet but come breakfast - I was told no dogs in the dining room and I would have to eat in the bar. I explained that this was not possible as I couldn’t leave my dog unaccompanied. In the end they gave me a seat at the entrance to the dining room. Although adequate this doesn’t portray a ‘dog friendly’ message!

Average property but good value for the price point. The fact you can get a copy of the Financial Times and the New York Times every morning for free is remarkable albeit a bit ridiculous when you can’t get a complimentary dental kit (they don’t stock them).

A good price, friendly and helpful staff. There was also live music in the bar Friday night with comfortable surroundings/seating. However, no kettle for tea/coffee in room and limited options for breakfast.

Lovely and clean place, and the staff are polite.
For me was 1 slight issue, needing to book in online, via phone, when i was already at the reception desk.
